Why can't they make a larger variety of blue beaded flexi's? I think I'd buy them all...

Inspired by all you guys with the smaller flexis, I tried a large copper rose flexi that I recently acquired in a nautilus bun....

PERFECT FIT! I can't believe it! Disc bun requires a mega, but nautilus works best with a Large. (XL is doable but a little too big and less secure.)

Kaelee, the copper rose flexi looks lovely! :) I'm a little bit jealous that a size l works in your nautilus. I received a size l flexi yesterday and every bun is too big and my pony tail is too small for wearing it as a hair tie. But I'm happy Steve could send me this fotm anyhow! It's pretty and maybe I give a try making a new mega flexi out of my other clips.

Question for my fellow International flexi-buyers: If you've bought flexis from consultants, do they charge you for tax?
Whenever I've bought flexis off the website I haven't been charged tax, but I'm about to buy one from a consultant and she expects me to pay Canadian Sales tax (13%) which seems stupid, since that money will just go to her! If the government wants me to pay tax on an item, they make it a customs charge when it enters the country, but she says that lilla rose always charges tax. Have any of you run into this?

Consultants pay the sales tax to Lilla Rose, then Lilla Rose submits the sales tax to the state for the consultant (this saves paperwork for consultants.) So a consultant has already paid sales tax on the retail value of the clip by the time they get it- when the customer pays sales tax to the consultant, they're basically reimbursing them for sales tax already paid. That's it in a nutshell.

Canadian taxes are high! Wow! 13% seems like a lot to me. I'm used to Pennsylvania sales tax, it's only 6%.

Kaelee... I think I may have inadvertantly insulted you a while back. You asked what looked better/ more secure, an XL or mega and I said the XL. BUT I was assuming you were using it on a bun like the nautilus or centerheld or with extra pins. And you just wrote that you need a mega to do your disc bun. Oops! I am sooo terribly sorry! Both look good on you, both sizes. I personally LIKE the look of a huuuge bun with a smaller flexi lookin all kinds of ornamental. That said, yes there are some buns that need a mega if the bun requires anchor-age (lol) across the whole thing. So if that is the case for your disc bun then... well I am an idiot. I apologize. I have felt bad ever since you expressed frustration at the... atmosphere the thread had taken and then I began to wonder, "did Ido it?!" I never never wanted to insult. :(

Both sizes look great on you, really! *great*

I have been using XL and they work fantastic for centerheld but there is NO WAY I can stuff all my hair into one! I have a custom mega on the way and I am hoping it doesn't look akward... because I just *prefer* the look of the smaller ones but want to have something that I can fit all my hair up into quickly (oh wait, that would be Ficcare, lol)

I am sorry! :flower:

Awe! I don't remember who it was that started it, I certainly haven't been holding anything against you! :flower:

I'm sporting a large right now in a nautilus, and I am honestly surprised it holds so well. An XL is a little too big for a nautilus on me, actually! It's doable (so I can wear my precious December FOTM :D) but it's not something I would ordinarily choose. I didn't know I could wear larges. I'm really, really, happy (and already window shopping for the next large clip to purchase, since so many styles are available in large that aren't available in mega!) XL is kind of the "awkward in between size" for me- it works for a few different things, but not well for any of them.

Okay, that kind of makes sense. But then why does Flexi never charge me sales tax? And also the one time I ordered from another consultant they didn't cahrge me tax either?

Tax is actually lower than it used to be in Canada - they've dropped it from 15% (part of why it's so high is cause it's really 2 taxes - 5%GST-goods and service tax, 8%PST - provincial sales tax) and it varies from province to province...

Yea, there were more than one person involved. I really couldn't help but think some of the comments were directed at me, although I admit to being sick at the time and therefore an emotional wreck as well. I don't remember who said what.

I think smaller flexis look great too, but comfort and hold trumps looks. If it doesn't fit comfortably, it doesn't fit comfortably! I do love the large bun/small flexi look it's just not always achievable.

Flexi8.com is different from Lilla Rose consultants. Same parent company, but Lillarose is their sales devision...it's kind of complicated. The other consultant may not have charged you tax because they felt it wasn't fair for you to have to pay it, or some other reason. They took that cut themselves, then, instead of you paying it.

Wow, so many gorgeous pictures have been added since last time I was here! :thud:
Thank you for the comments on my pictures. :D I have been thinking about making a video showing how I do a sectioned bun, but alas, no time to do it yet and my camera sucks. I can do some written instructions though.
1. Detangle and divide your hair in 2 sections - one is the top part of your hair and one is the bottom part. I prefer to make the top section a bit smaller than the bottom.
2. Make a nautilus bun (or any other bun, if you like) with the top part, and secure with your flexi-8.
3. Divide the bottom section in 2. It doesn't matter which side you start with, but I usually do the right section first.
4. Take the right section, and twist it around the bun (clockwise). I pin with u-pins/amish pins as I go, and tuck the ends under and secure them with a spin pin.
5. Take the left section and twist it around (counter-clockwise). Pin as you go around, I use both u-pins and spin pins, for extra security. Tuck the ends under and secure with a spin pin.

Hope any of this makes sense. For the bun in that picture, I ended up using 4 spin pins, 8 u-pins, and 2 bobby pins. For those who don't use spin pins, u-pins and bobby pins will do fine. I just need spin pins because my hair is a slippery beast sometimes :o

Is it right that sometimes a consultant can find you an old FOTM that's no longer showing on the Lillarose site? I would love to find that Fan-tastic clip in a XS or S.

Yep! consultants can often find it. :) Thanks, Kaelee! Could you possibly recommend a consultant? Maybe we aren't supposed to do that in the thread. If so, maybe you could leave me a message on my profile? Sorry, I just don't see anywhere on the lillarose site where I can request a consultant.

ETA: Oh wait, I just found the small print in the bottom right hand side of their home page. I can fill out the request for a consultant there.

You can also just post on the main LillaRose facebook page if you're looking for a specific flexi. Like "are there any consultants who still have flexi X" kinda thing :)

I'm going to buy my first flexi tomorrow! (I just have to decide on one...) When I go to the Lilla Rose website, I get a specific consultant's page. I guess it doesn't matter, but should I request one in my area?

Kaelee
April 17th, 2014, 09:13 PM
It may be beneficial to have a consultant in your area because you can meet to try on sizes and can pick up the clips personally instead of having them shipped to you if you buy from the consultant's personal inventory or have them find something for you that's been discontinued. It isn't required to have one in your area though.

I made a quick video last night (http://youtu.be/UJ3cgg5s7pU) and I would have posted it sooner, but my PS Vita didn't want to let me transfer the file to the laptop. It took ages before I got that thing to work. The quality isn't particularly good, but it shows how I do sectioned buns. :)

You may be able to save on shipping if you order through the consultant- but most likely only if they happen to maintain an inventory and have what you want on hand (then they may just drop it off to you or you can pick it up, rather than mailing it.) If you order from the consultant's website on LillaRose, LillaRose ships the clips directly to you and the consultant gets the commission.

Having someone nearby DOES give the possible advantage (or disadvantage! :D) of being able to go to parties and/or meet with the consultant to try on clips in person, get sizing advice etc. That's not necessary for everyone (and my bank account hurt last time I went to a party! ;))

Great information, thanks Kaelee!

You're welcome!!! A lot of it depends on what each individual consultant is willing to do, or has on hand. Some don't keep inventory, and some do. Some don't do parties, some do. So it really depends on who you meet.

Oh, oh, oh, look what came in the mail today! I sent Flexi8 some amethyst and rose quartz beads and he made this lovely custom:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c377/Cimarron/Mobile%20Uploads/0418141715-1.jpg (http://s31.photobucket.com/user/Cimarron/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0418141715-1.jpg.html)

I was so excited that I opened it in the driveway and put it on. Spice was waiting for me so I let her be in the photo. then I realized the bun was really clumsy looking so went and got a comb and redid it. Spice was too cute, so I'll just post her picture, bad bun and all. But, here is the better bun:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c377/Cimarron/Mobile%20Uploads/0418141735c.jpg (http://s31.photobucket.com/user/Cimarron/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0418141735c.jpg.html)

And I got the peacock flexi! I have wanted peacocks my whole life...

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c377/Cimarron/Mobile%20Uploads/0418141728a.jpg (http://s31.photobucket.com/user/Cimarron/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0418141728a.jpg.html)

Big difference between the Mega and an XL! I didn't think my beads would fit right on an XL and the Mega works nicely for covering my whole bun and not needing any extra pins. I haven't tried on the peacock one yet.

CimarronSun
April 19th, 2014, 11:03 AM
It *is* heavier. Real amethyst and quartz, not plastic or glass beads. But it didn't bother me, it isn't excessively heavy.

I emailed first and asked if I could send him a necklace that I love but never wear and he said yes, but also send in a design as well. It makes it go faster on his end since he only charges a $5 fee for customs. So I sketched what I thought would look good and he chose the spacers. I am not terribly picky anyways, so it was all painless and easy and he strung the beads and sent it back after I paid with paypal. Easy enough! And now I can wear those beads. I had the necklace for eh... around 10 years? And never wore it! It was made by Barefoot Maiden (etsy) although back then she was called Maiden's Treasures.

I love turquoise... I think it'd be great to have a flexi made with real turquiose... but I would have to buy the stones since I don't have any that I want to take off a necklace or hairstick. I probably won't be buying any expensive beads anytime soon. Well I do have one necklace but it only has 2 turquoise stones and they're rather large, it probably wouldn't work for a flexi.

Check out www.firemountaingems.com for beads, they have a WIDE selection and pretty good prices. Although the holes in the beads have to be wide enough to accommodate the wire, that might be tricky.

You're making me want custom things too now, LOL!

April 19th, 2014, 11:58 AM
No, no! Don't encourage me!

What sort of gem/ stone/ jewels do you like? For me it is amethyst and turquoise (NOT together though). And the thought of REAL is way more appealing than look-a-like fake "stones". I breezed through the artificial stones at the craft store and thought... "nah".

Kaelee
April 19th, 2014, 01:12 PM
Amethyst is one, but right now I'm on an ANYTHING BLUE kick. Blue (especially teal/aqua) and purple are my two favorite colors. I agree, fake is...bleh. I have a pair of "tuquoise" acrylic hairsticks that I really don't love half as much as I thought I would.

Mr. Flexi (I am hesitant to use people's real names) had to get a smaller gauge wire to make mine because *i* didn't think about hole size before sending. I prefer larges for this bun myself...it's not just snug, it's "almost can't close it and I had to wiggle it through in a way that risks breaking hairs to get it to close at all". I really just wanted to see if I could do it. I can...but larges fit better. Still, I'm happy I can wear mediums this way because I have a few mediums that I would like to wear in more ways. :D

I think that's the issue I have with it too. It's not centered so it looks too small. Though still I prefer the large because it actually fits the whole center of the bun and I don't have to torque it through the thickest part (and snag hairs.)

It's not as bad as an XL in a disc bun...that one is usually painful for me AND the flexi!

LOL Usually ponytails. Small or medium works for ponytails but it has to be one of the bigger smalls for it to work. I can't close a lot of the smalls, so I went to medium and I use tricks to make them fit. ;)

Kaelee, I'm of the "I think that flexi looks a bit squished in there" camp although the bun looks nice and you could get away with it, if you want to. But to me, on the right side of the photo (I guess its the left side of your bun) the flexi is burrowing really deep in there (which is what makes it look crooked, I actually think it IS centered) and it just looks like--well, like your hair is squished in there and would like some room to breathe.
And if you are actually breaking hairs, I think that pretty much answers the size question of that flexi and that particular style bun. I wouldn't.

Kaelee

I agree with you...sometimes I have it so tight I feel like I could pop the flexi (and I don't think anyone's actually done that, they're strong little things!) I don't wear mediums in a bun normally, I just really wanted to see if I could. This is probably the last time I'll do it, but I do know it's possible. ;) I just had to see if it is possible.

chen bao jun
April 19th, 2014, 07:34 PM
Its nice to know they don't pop. Not that I am about to have that issue. My large never held a whole bun, there was no question. For a long time, it was annoying because my XL was much too big for a whole bun. But now it can do it--though on the second notch in, not the outermost notch so it will be a long, long before I outgrow that. Meanwhile I have found that the large holds a ponytail very comfortably. I don't wear ponytails very much, but I hope eventually (this means years) I can use this in a center held bun.
Not inspired to buy more right now because even though the issue is working itself out gradually, the fact really is still that the large is too small and the XL is too big for what I want it for (holding whole buns. And for me, buns means cinnabuns and nautilus buns basically, i can't do any others yet. And my nautilus is still really too tight, I need some more length). Well, I guess the complaint that the Xl is so very much bigger than the L has been done to death on here. And from photos I've seen, the mega looks about twice as large as the XL, lol, so I actually doubt I will ever be able to get into that...I was so interested to see that they do do custom beading though. I love that flexi with the semi precious stones. Though I do have to say, that in spite of the fact that on the website flexis can look kind of homemade, they seem to lose that homemade look when the person wearing them has a beautiful bun and also some of the FOTMs from lilla rose look really spectacular to begin with. So maybe I will join you all on here eventually. But I really don't want to buy another flexi until I can really fit XLs well. On the second notch in, they are in the hair, they are holding the hair but to me they look unevenly placed in my hair and I don't like that, even if they are securely holding my hair.

Kaelee
April 19th, 2014, 07:42 PM
Oh the photos on the website aren't that good. :-\ The April FOTM looked kind of blah on the website and I almost didn't buy one, but my eyes all but fell out when I saw it in person. The photos on the website lack depth of color or something.

I think it looks great, just a matter of which bun.

Can you try this one with the M and the L, see what gives. The pin needs to go in and come out far on the inside of the coils. Position doesn't really matter, further up or down or slanted. You can compact this bun quite a bit by rolling the hair first. Also the number of fingers in the coil can differ, three or four, as long as it holds the insides down so the coil isn't too big for them to come back out through the hole hehe.

I've done it with both, there are pictures of a large upthread somewhere. Twisting the hair first means I don't have enough hair to wrap and less fingers means I can't get the stick in without a painful amount of torque unfortunately.

LOL! Well it is really easy to do when you insert the stick first and the whole clip rotates. Natuarally I didn't check in a mirror before continuing. The peacock tail is NOT one you really want pressed into your bun either.

That Flitter one IS so pretty, Vanilla! Now I have 3 XLs... perhaps I need a large in Flitter (or... gah... custom turquoise) for those Nautilus bun thingies. Psssh... I need to stop. <whimper>

Chen, what did you mean by they look "homemade"? Do you mean they look poorly made? Heh, as an Etsy fan, homemade/ handcrafted is a sign of quality (to me) rather than mass produced. But if you're worried they are fragile, well, actually they're very strong. I cannot believe I haven't popped one open. I have exerted force on them that would have broken any other hairtoy. Or maybe you just do not like the beads? I would love to know more of your thoughts!

The ones I have don't look poorly made exactly, but the large looks like a craft project, the XL looks a lot better, though.
I think I do have a prejudice against certain types of beads. But I repeat, when I see them in action shots, they look so incredibly better than they do on the site. I do like the Lilla rose ones though. Its something I'm thinking about. I can be very opinionated, lol but I am willing to change my mind.

If I rest my head against anything while wearing a flexi8 it pops it open and it comes out. Any way to prevent this? I can't sit in a recliner chair or rest my head against the car seat when I'm driving. I have to perpetually keep my head bent forward. I hate that. I generally have to keep my head bent forward no matter what the style or hairtoy so that it doesn't touch the backs of chairs and get messed up. Especially while driving I find this very annoying and uncomfortable.

Only thing I can think of to help with that issue is to make sure your Flexi-8 is tightly holding the bun on the third notch. Not that the bun is tight and pulling on your scalp, just that there is as much hair as possible shoved into the flexi 8. When I sleep, I sometimes wear a Large Flexi-8, and it takes a bit of effort to get it in (I try to fit as much hair as possible into it), but once it's in it doesn't budge a bit and I toss and turn a lot when I'm sleeping.

I know I have the right size, because nothing smaller will fit some of my buns. I'm using an XL on most of my buns, and the L doesn't fit unless it is a center-held bun. I only have one M and I can use it for half-ups and maybe a folded braid.

Here it is. I do not know the name. It's a large I bought off of ebay and cleaned up. It's the long silver beads I haven't liked. but of course now that I take a photo, it looks quite lovely in the shot, not like a craft project at all. maybe I was mistaken? Or maybe it just doesn't suit my hair?

To keep mine from popping when I lean back, I have wrapped a small hair tie around the end of the metal stick, then hook the flex, and then pull the edge of the hair tie around the tip of the stick. I use dark hair ties to match my hair. It helps keep the slightly loose ones in place also. If this did not make sense, let me know and I will try and load a few pics.

Chen, yeah, something does look "off". I like the color of the beads themselves- maybe they'd look better on a copper colored flexi. And the centerpiece looks like it should have had something IN it where it is plain smooth metal. ?? Do they still make this design?

If you like Flexi's and they hold good for you, I think you should try another one. There are so many options!

LauraLL, for driving, especially long distances, I put my hair in that unwrapped bun which is held by 3 small claw clips on the sides and top. I can lean my head back when wearing this bun and it is very secure. I also have covered my car head rest with satin.

I will figure out a way to cover my headrests in the vehicles with satin. I need some way to move it from one headrest to another since we are always switching drivers and seats. Maybe just a satin pillowcase over the top of the seat?

You know, CimarronSun, as I was taking my daily walk, I suddenly had the same thought that I see you wrote down here. It suddenly struck that me that there must have once been something in that odd-looking blank space. did I write before that I got it on ebay? It was cheap enough that it doesn't matter that its not quite right. I got it basically to check if I should actually be wearing a large instead of an x-large--just before I was able to fit the xlarge, of course. (though i don't fit it that well). I have no idea what design it possibly was before it was (probably) cannibalized. Maybe someone here who has been buying flexis for a long time might know?
When I saw the photo of the beads, I realized that I quite like those amber colored beads also. It works for me for ponytails or braids, so I may get crafty and glue something in the empty space. I don't know.
The thing is, my musical note one (the x-large) while not looking homemade at all, doesn't really suit me much better. And while I am sure there are flexis that would (I have my eye on the 'flitter' and also on that beautiful blue cameo one), it seems silly to buy them right now because I really don't 'quite' fit the XL yet. I will post an action photo later and show you what I mean. Though I think some take this subject, shall we say, a bit too seriously (there have been so many posts recently complaining about other people's flexis not fitting, which I don't see why you would care) even though I can now make the XL stay in my hair when I use the second notch, I wouldn't say it actually 'fit' and its annoying to me, and the much smaller large is too small to put a whole bun into, which is what I want it for, so I don't quite see the point of buying something that currently has no size that fits me.

LauraLL, can it possibly be that the L is too small and the XL is still slightly too large, since they have that ridiculous size difference between them? I'm not saying that IS so, just that it might be.

... the blue cameo :cloud9: That one really appeals to me too.

I think I am between sizes as well. :\ you can work with one too small but one too big is a bit more difficult. Maybe I will tie the ribbon onto the stick side of my mega one. I like them quite snug fitting and that one popped open on ME in the car yesterday just like the previous poster, Laura. In my case I think it was because the flexi was a little too loose and yet the size down is WAY too small for anything but centerheld (but great for centerheld!)

We feel your sizing pain. Heh.

I am working on growing more hair, so that I also can use smaller hairtoys! I can't do anything centerheld--I think I need at least 6 inches more hair for that.
I hope tying the ribbon around the stick will work for you, CimarronSun. i really wish they'd do something about the wonky sizing. it's like they havechoices in flexis for 'normal' length or thickness hair but once you outgrow a large, they have no idea of what the increments are.

So Chen (LOL, I feel like we are taking over the thread) can you take say the top half or third and do a mini bun? The thinner the section of hair the more wraps you'll get. Then you could bring the bottom layer/ section up and pin it even if it won't go all the way around. Or leave it loose. Would that look okay? This is a lot like what kittybird's video showed- her hair is SO thick, so sectioning is good.

Have you tried a french twist? I always push those, but I cannot pull them off (so sad).

Ok, this was the best I could do. (I just learned to take selfies in the mirror today). I feel that in the artificial light with my dark hair, you can't see my bun at all.But I think you can see what I mean, the XL flexi just doesn't look right. It holds on the second notch and doesn't move, I can shake my head and whatever else, it will stay all day. But it goes in crooked and I think it looks too big. Besides the fact that it somehow is not the best color for me.

That one in my avatar IS the one that opened up on me in the car! LOL, just like yours. But if you can stuff more hair into your XL, maybe you can get the clip full enough where it is too tight to pop loose? I think yesterday I didn't do a good job making my bun or something. Maybe the clip is too big. I don't know. Well, the headrest might flatten the "8" out so much that then it reaches the end of the pin/ stick. I don't remember leaning back on the headrest but then again I had a cop behind me acting weird so I wasn't thinking about my hair. I noticed the clip was opened when I got out of my car. So it only ever happens to you in the car?

Oh, I think it looks GREAT! It doesn't look too big either. Maybe you'd like one with more color? I think the silver looks lovely though!

Looks like you poked the pin in towards the bottom and came out near the top. Maybe feel around first with your free hand to find center (both sides) and try to get it even. I definitely do NOT get mine straight everytime! It is usually too high up and the bun looks like it is dragging out the bottom. Like in the pic with Spice. I can't tell it is in awkward looking until I actually LOOK in a mirror. LOL.

I think the clip does look good in your hair though.

Thank you, CimarronSun. I will try to put it in the way you suggest--I do have trouble with that.I always get it in too low if I get it straight and the bun is popping out the top. I do like color. but I love music and I want to like this one with the note so badly. does it really look like the right size? Compared to how they look in everyone else's buns on this thread (so gorgeous), I just feel that this does not look right.
I still feel I can't see the bun in this photo and that I CAN see a giant piece of lint in my hair or else something on the mirror, I don't know which. I wish I wasn't so obsessive...

Okay. I know I have beading wire somewhere in my house. I bought it once and it turned out to be the wrong thing for what I wanted to do, but I never throw anything out and I have actually seen it since several. I know I have beading wire, I have beads, crimps, a tool and great buttons for the middle--but I can't find the wire anywhere, so I can't try to make a flexi 8 tonight (sob).
the way these things work, I will go buy some beading wire and then it will show up.
I am such a disorganized individual, its very sad and I'm frustrated with it

ETA: of course, while looking for the wire I have found all kinds of things I couldn't find when I actually needed them. Scissors sharpeners, buttons to cover, 28 count linen, embossing calligraphy pen.. everything but beading wire.

I use bracelet size. I used two loops (one piece of wire, two loops long, if that makes sense? The memory wire comes as a coil so you just cut off the amount you need) to make mine, and they're exactly the same size as an XL.

Here's my effort, threaded on memory wire, with beads I had around and a shank button (shank buttons are convenient but a bit of an issue. Since I sew, I have lots of them. And the shanks are always turned the wrong way for a faux flexi 8. however, since this was a leaf it didn't seem to matter that much). I posed it next to my real flexi, so you guys can compare. But... I'm not sure how to finish it off now. As you can see from the back view photo.Obviously I have to cut the wire (I did buy a memory wire cutter, smart me). But how do I secure it, especially so that I do not pull out my hair?
I did already make sure that the beads will stay in place using crimp beads.
I did not have patience enough to wait until I ordered Kaydana's clever sticks, so this will be a flexi that will be secured with a hairstick through it. It's just enough larger that that ought to work and I have finished chopsticks all over the place.
I must say I find this quite thrilling--I spent less than for one extra large flexi and have endless amounts of supplies left to make many more than this one (if I figure the finishing process out..)
Opnions are very welcome, in fact desired.

Chen, it might be time to make a "Flexi8 modifications" thread just especially for self-made Flexi8s! It at least would keep them separate from the "real deal", because it's getting harder and harder to notice the difference! Very nice!

Kaelee, one problemo, your hair is SO PRETTY I hardly can notice the flexi. So smooth and shiny and perfect. Makes me want to get into henna again.

Chen- wow! That is incredible! And you can make it exactly the right size. I love the leaf center piece and are those wood beads? I love the look!

Eta- no they're like tiger eye type color? Those would look pretty interspersed with wood beads though and that leaf... and... I will stop. ;)

Thank you, CimarronSun. They actually are tigereye beads, real gems. I bought them a long long time ago and they were affordable at that time. I do have some more; your idea of putting them with wood is interesting.
They are the only genuine thing in the flexi lol--unless you count swarovski as real, the pale yellow beads right around the tiger eye are swarovski.
The leaf is just a button that I had around.
The memory wire is great, it feels just just like my real flexi, not floppy at all. I am just sorry I didn't have the little stick available to put on. Maybe I should put off cutting and finishing the wire (which I don't know how to do, anyway, I never worked with memory wire before and in fact have only done a little beading years and years back, maybe 10 years ago) until I buy that piece that Kaydana suggested for an attached flexi stick.
but I am impatient to wear the thing.

That's gorgeous!

Looking at what you've got there, I'd wrap it around the base of the button to secure it and just make sure you tuck the ends in well. It might not be neat, but no one but you will see it. If you can't tuck the ends so they don't catch your hair, coat them with something. I often bake polymer clay onto the back of my centre piece, to hide the mess and make sure there's nothing that'll catch in my hair.

All my faux flexis are finished off differently at the back. It all comes down to what will work best for the centre piece you've used.

Might be worth to start asking for them. I mean, one picture of the clip, and one in hair.

Though yeah I can see how that would get troublesome.. blond hair and henna hair makes a clip look totally different!

Here is a better shot of the pink, which I think may be my favorite. They all have shank buttons as the centers and a mix of beads I bought and beads I cannibalized from various things.
I don't know if I'll actually go buy bead or not. so far I haven't bought anything but the wire, the crimp beads and the cutting tool. (I already had another tool for twirling the wire with.) My mom tag sales though and I go to thrift shops, so I can probably find stuff around if I want to make more.
I did try on the leaf one yesterday, it was super comfortable.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.
My thoughts on the process and pros and cons:
Pros: They can be as inexpensive or as high end as you want.If you'd like to use real jewels for beads and sterling silver beads, you can. If you wnat to use low end beads from Joann or ebay (which can be very pretty), you can also do that. Just make sure they are beads for wire stringing (that the hole is big enough, although there is a tool that can widen holes in beads.
2. They can be as custom as you want. The flexi sizing problems disappear for those between sizes. Especially if you decide to use hair sticks to close them with (without fastening on the stick). On the other hand, you can fasten on a stick if you want (which of course has the advantage of it being impossible to lose the stick then, if this tends to happen to you).
3. It is not one of the harder crafts in the world, in fact it is very easy. You just push wire through a hole in a bead, how hard is that. I do recommend getting the tools (see below).
4. You can be as creative as you want. You can knock off existing flexis, or design your own or just do what I do and use whatever happens to be lying around the house.
Cons: Takes time. Not a lot of time, but some time. It would be an easy thing to do while sitting in front of the tv though. However, some may not have time to even sit in front of t he tv.
Lots of little beads around, you'd have to be careful if you had young children about storage.
I honestly can't think of another con.
Hints (others can chime in to correct me, especially the lovely people who helped me with the process and have more experience): Do use memory wire. It has just the right texture. You can buy it in a craft store or on Amazon or on ebay. This is what I used (but I bought it at Michael's cheaper):
http://www.amazon.com/Beadalon-Silver-Plated-Bracelet-Package/dp/B004BR18GS/ref=sr_1_5?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1398512005&sr=1-5&keywords=memory+wire
you can also get it in much larger amounts:
http://www.amazon.com/Circles-Silvertone-Bracelet-~Jewelry-Making~/dp/B0062ENHBW/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1398512005&sr=1-1&keywords=memory+wire
ABSOLUTELY do get the memory wire cutting tool (I got mine at michael's with a coupon)
http://www.amazon.com/Beadalon-Memory-Wire-Shear-Classic/dp/B001GS4TWA/ref=sr_1_3?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1398512005&sr=1-3&keywords=memory+wire
BE VERY CAREFUL cutting the memory wire especially small pieces which can fly around and hurt people. Think especially about your eyes. I hold the end I am about the cut off so that it stays in my hand.
Get a jewelry making tool such as this:
http://www.amazon.com/Jewelry-Beading-Pliers-Round-Flatten/dp/B00177X9OO/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1398512374&sr=1-1&keywords=3+in+1+craft+jewelry+tool
Look at youtube tutorials for help in using the tools. Theres even one specifically on making flexi knockoffs (though she's a bit annoying, keeps being interrupted by her kids, doesn't show what she's doing well and uses the sort of wire of flops, still it was useful
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB75ULrGIQI
There are also cool, short tutorials on working with memory wire, making bracelets, finishing it off, etc. which are useful, you can extrapolate.
Remember if you use buttons, make sure they have a shank. And that the shank is going to be on wrong, so get buttons that it doesn't matter (unless you don't mind a sideways butterfly).
I am sure that using e6000 and gluing on findings will also get you amazing results, but I didn't try that with this project so let others weigh in on that.
Remember that flexi 8 is a registered trademarked product so if you decide to make some to sell or something, do not call them flexi 8s, and look into the ramifications of doing that carefully. I am sure that if you just want to sell beaded figure 8's that go with hairsticks, you'd be fine, but if you end up using these so that its more of an actual knockoff
https://www.etsy.com/listing/77318213/2-pcs-160x24mm-antique-bronze-vintage?ref=favs_view_5
be a bit more careful about selling.
I haven't had mine a long time yet (obviously) but they do seem to be a very, very sturdy product.

Enjoy, cimmaronsun. I look forward to enjoying your talents. There are lots of lovely turquoise beads that are made for stringing on wires at Michael's (and other places I am sure.) Not to enable you or anything. I think someone (was it Kaelee) mentioned an internet source, too, was it firemountain gems or something like that?
The memory wire cutter is a must. It cuts the wire cleanly so that it does not poke your fingers. The other tool is useful for bending wire at the end to finish, for flattening wire back out once you decide you don't want it bent, for opening up wire on already made earring or wire necklaces to cannibalize the beads and for other things I am sure. However, don't use the cutter on that to cut the memory wire.
both tools and a decent amount of wire (I bought the smallest package for $3.99 and it could make 15 extra large flexies) and some beads should be be under $20, which is less than any extra large flexi I have ever seen. I am amazed at how cheap those flexi type sticks are, also, so it probably is a matter of finding time more than cost for most people.

This is the real Flexi thread.

I agree with that, even though the copies are beautiful, they still aren't real Flexi8s. Flexi8 might take offense. As I pointed out earlier it maybe is about time to post a "Flexi8 modifications" thread, separate from this one (that sure fell on deaf ears :(). After all it's been done for the Ficcares as well! The real ones and copies are being kept painstakingly separate there as well - and for good reason.

Umm, of course I will not post my creations here if most of you would rather I did not, or if the mods feel that it is wrong. I actually thought it was okay though because people do in fact still post their ficcare and fakkare creations over on the actual ficcare thread all the time. the modifications thread was created not because people felt it was wrong to post mods on the ficcare thread, but because so many people had started painting fakkares that they wanted a place where they could easily find all the instructions quickly without going through that whole long thread, not because anyone had any issue with the mods being being pictured in the thread. If you look at recent posts over there, there are photos with people who have bought Nightshades recent mods showing them and also someone showing off her red painted fakkare, put up within the last couple of weeks. People often post the modified things in both threads. It has not been an issue there, though of course that does not matter if a majority of people feel it is an issue here.

It is actually in no way illegal and certainly immoral to make the sort of beaded hair toy I have made, by the way and the company flexi 8 is not going to take issue with me for making a beaded hairtoy for myself. Mine at this point are not really that similar--since I haven't attached anything like their trademarked stick to the back. People have been making beaded barrettes since the beginning of time and that is all I have done. I am not selling in competition with them, I have not made copies of any of their designs, but have created my own, companies do not go around chasing crafters for doing anything I (or anyone else who has made their own beaded hairtoy in the past) has done. People don't stop buying clothes in the store because some people sew, and flexi 8 is not going to lose any money because some people make their own beaded hairtoys. Ficcare has not lost a dime since many of us started modding fakkares and ficcares, people are still buying up their new designs so fast that you have to be one of the people who sign in on the first night they put a new design out to even get one. I really doubt that some people making beaded hairtoys, even ones that are much closer to flexis than mine (if people choose to make them with a similar stick) is going to have any effect on the market for flexis, either. Those who want to make will be a minority, because most people won't want to, and also those who want to make will still want to buy actual flexis.
I am just pointing these things out in case anyone who wants to make a flexi should feel frightened to do so by recent posts, because there is no need. And of course I won't post any more flexis here if it is confusing or bothering most of you, or if you just don't like it, or if the mods don't feel I should. Actually, I don't have anything further to post at the moment in any case and it doesn't bother me one way or the other. And making a thread dedicated to making flexis is probably a good idea, if lots of people think that they might start wanting to do that. But I did think it was important to point out that crafting these things is not illegal or unethical, since that point was brought up and also to point out what the actual situation is over on the ficcare thread. Chen.

I must have redone mine 20 times today (of course some of that was stress induced). I had a heck of a time getting it up when it's damp...i swear my hair gets thicker when wet/damp and gets too thick to do a nautilus bun. My large flexi that's usually perfect would hardly fit!

*grabby* might be the issue actually. Maybe I'm interpreting it as thickness because it behaves like too much thickness for length, but it's really just grabby.

I think that might be the issue I have with ficcares too. Unless I'm EXTREMELY careful (and even when I am, sometimes) the ficcare likes to grab one or two hairs on the inside of my bun, and pull them in a weird direction (taking them with it through the bun, actually). GAH!

Yes! This! EXacTLy!

I, too, have grabby hair when wet/damp. Putting up wet hair is only time I use my Quattro Pandora stix; those thin wire babies are sometimes the only thing that will go into the mess.

Thanks, Kaelee. I just love it! It is an XL and although it feels like it holds up most buns securely it can feel a bit wobbly and loose in others. I have orederd two in L just to compare. I suspect a L will be the best choice for some updos and the XL for others. I don't know if I have pushed the pin to far into the bun. Maybe I should try to keep an equal amount of pin visible on either side of the bun. In the bun in the picture there is a lot of pin sticking out on the right side but maybe that doesn't matter?

So I liked the Flexi LHB posted, but I'm allergic to Female Guilt Parties and being assaulted by consultants when I so much as order once from anything like LR/Scentsy/Pampered Chef/etc.

I emailed Flexi to see if I could get the clip as a gift for my mom, but through them and sent directly to her. Their response was interesting and I thought others might want to know about Flexi/LR merging to one site.

I sent:

Hello! I saw this lovely Flexi and I'm still in need of a Mother's Day gift for my mom:

<picture>

Sadly, I don't support Female Guilt Parties (Lilla Rose / Scentsy / Avon / etc) so is it possible to get this from you and have it shipped directly to my mom? :)

I'd be happy to pay a little extra if you offer gift wrapping!

<3

[Nightshade]

Yes you can purchase here if you like. Just choose an item of equal value and leave us a note to make the exchange in the notes at checkout. The only gift wrapping is the attached festive bubble mailer, available at no extra cost.

You can purchase directly from Lilla Rose just as you do at flexi8.com. We will ship exactly the same as flexi8.com, just with prettier mailers. There is no need to have a Consultant, or to do the guilt parties if you don't want to. If you give me your Mom's address we will ship directly to her.

BTW - after this weekend, flexi8.com will be merged into Lilla Rose, and flexi8.com will go away. All Flexi 8 purchasing will be done exclusively through Lilla Rose. I'm sure there will be LOTS more questions. There will be an email blast to all flexi8.com customers about this very soon.
