I swear there used to be an actual listing of what length each of the sizes are, rather than just generic recommendation videos for what size might work, but I can't seem to find it anymore. Could anyone make (or at least contribute to) a listing of each size's stick length? I would also be curious to know what the widths are for the 8's themselves for each stick length.

CLIP SIZE PIN LENGTH
Mini/XXS 2" / 5cm
Extra Small / XS 2.75" / 7cm
Small / SM 3.25" / 8.25cm
Medium / MD 3.75" / 9.5cm
Large / LG 4.25" / 10.8cm
Extra Large / XL 5.25" / 13.3cm
Mega / XXL 6.25" / 15.8cm

The widths of the O's varies per flexi, I have had Ms where the pin fits the O, and I have had them where they were larger. The pin length is the only thing that is consistent.

Really? That's interesting. I would have expected both parts to have been consistent. If they're not, how do you make the same size fit the same way across styles?

Thanks, ooo!

It's hard to post here because it's almost like advertising. A few were banned over it because they repeatedly posted and kept doing so, so I think people are hesitant to post the images. Maybe the new ones are on the flexi site somewhere?

I needed the bunny too! My dad used to call me bunny rabbit when I was a kid :) I was going back and forth about what size to get, finally decided and went to order today and was very pleasantly surprised they were on sale. I got a bunny, an emerald dream, a copper rose, and the copper rose U pins. I'm VERY excited to play with them all.

They are almost impossible to photograph. It just looks like a bun with a jewel/doodad on the side wall. But I find with one spinpin they hold really well and are very understated and elegant. I am trying to stay strong and not buy the chick flexi and Olivia pins.

Plus yesterday two swap board flexis arrived at my door. My flexi cup runneth over at the moment! :D I ended up wearing this one all day (and right now as i type this):

Thanks eadwine & lapushka :) I need to revisit my flexi bun technique really. I found the way in the picture shows sticks to the max and holds pretty well, but with flexis I need to grab more from the sides or the hair floofs over the flexi eventually...

Looks like you need a tighter bun than the one you are wearing in the picture. To me it looks really loose.

two_wheels
March 26th, 2016, 06:23 AM
Yeah, the bottom right bit is tight, but the top left (the loop) is loose. If I make the whole thing tight, either I break hair or I break the stick/fork... Practice practice :)

Actually braided might be best... Hmm

Bright sparkles look pretty in your hair!
Do you tie off the braid end? I've been trying not to use tie lately, as they seem to leave my ends pretty ragged. I have noticeably fewer splits now. But braided buns uncoil. At the moment I'm addressing that with spin pins but interested in alternatives!

eadwine
March 26th, 2016, 11:41 AM
Yes I do, I have to because my hair is so slippery, if I don't the braid end will undo itself in the bun and then the hair comes poking out. At longer lengths I don't have to but for now I do. I do use one of those cloth bands though.. terry cloth I believe it is called.

I've got the bunny up in my first disc bun since the chop! (and only my second disc bun ever, as when I tried it before I was at hip and my hair was just too long for it because it was so thin it just would around so very many times I just ended up with tangles). Anyway, I love my bunny, childish or not, and I actually got a compliment on it! (very rare!)

I'm a iii and I wore a L in a LWB at waist (unlayered). It's all about how your hair compacts and the buns you do, and don't buy your flexi too big or it will slip and slide and you can't hold a bun in for the life of you.

I think a large would be too big for centerheld buns. My hair is a bit past waist with ~6cm circumference (but I have layers so lots of tapering). My hair also compacts a lot in buns, I think. I recently got a medium and it works well in a LWB for me. If I wanted to do a cinnabun though I need a bigger one - I haven't gotten that to work with my medium flexi. So I guess it depends on whether you plan on doing mostly centerheld buns or not.

Oh dear, I'm going to be staring very hard at the April FotM. Love the pearl and white enamel! I've been tempted by the pink hibiscus from time to time, but always held off for fear that it might be too gaudy a shade of pink for me in real life. With this one I don't see how I could go wrong.

Yes, eadwine, price is starting to be a factor for me as well, and it's making me a lot pickier. They've gone up recently and there will be a point where I decide that it's no longer worth it for me for a mass-produced clip!

lillielil
April 1st, 2016, 08:09 AM
PixieP - I also suggest a medium. That's what I use for center-held buns. My hair is a little shorter than yours and also on the thin side. I have been thinking about getting a L at some point, but that would be for more of a bun-cage style.

I love Dogwood, but won't get it. In fact, with these prices I think I am done unless something I really can't live without shows up. They'll make an octopus flexi some day, right?

Theobroma
April 1st, 2016, 08:21 AM
Holy smokes, $28 for an XL?

I'm going to have to think carefully about this, and/or wait until there's a sale. When all's said and done these are just mass-produced clips and it's getting to where they're costing as much as a handmade toy on Etsy.

Actually I think I might drop a line to my consultant about the pricing. From this thread it's clear that I'm far from the only one with sticker shock and perhaps a consultant can make sure the right people within the company hear about it. I know from past experience that when the price of any toy goes up beyond a certain level and I end up buying less, what happens is that I buy considerably less. As in, I've gone from buying a toy a month from a certain source to something like one a year, which means that their revenue from me has probably gone down 90%. I don't do this deliberately or to "punish" them for increasing their prices -- it's just that a higher price makes me think harder about whether I really want the item in question and then the answer is more often no than yes.

I paid the $28 for the Pink Hibiscus (XL) but only because I wanted it so badly and I wasn't sure how long it would be around. But I just won't keep paying that much, especially for clips that I LIKE rather than LOVE. I really like the Dogwood Flexi, it's a good neutral, but like others have said, you can get handmade custom forks and sticks for around the same price. I really do love Flexis but unless they have a decent sale soon, I won't be buying many.

I did write to my consultant and she forwarded it to the company. I'm not optimistic that it'll do much good, because I don't suppose they raised their prices on nothing but a whim... but if the effect of the hike is that more people are like me and end up buying not, say, one Flexi less per year, but less than half the number they were buying before, that isn't going to have the desired effect on their bottom line.

Just to be clear: I still love Flexis. And LR still has some of the best customer service I've ever run across. I'm not trying to badmouth them at all. But the fact remains that a hairtoy is only worth what people are prepared to pay for it.

I understand that the price seems high - but compared to other mass produced enamel toys (i am especially talking about ficcares which cost upwards of 50$) it seems reasonable. I actually wish they would offer more "high end" flexis that look the part in a conservative work environment. It is ok if those cost more. For me most flexi designs are a no go because they look cheap to me. I like that there is a diversity of price points (and quality) - this way they attract a bigger pool of customers overall.

Zesty, your sunflowers are very pretty! I am in the same boat - I'm wearing my daisies today (oops, they're Bijoux Manoel. Still) for the same reason. Hey, it's an easy way to cheer up and not too expensive (as long as you never get hooked on old Ficcare. :D )

PixieP, my pony is at around 1.5 inches. When my hair was at hip before my Great Shed, I could still easily wear a medium in centerheld buns. I only needed a large to "cage" the bun, and in my opinion, flexis don't hold as well that way, at least on fine, slippery hair. So I fourteenth? a medium. :p

I really, really, really like dogwood. Enough to pay the price for it. But I'm unsure how the brighter gold would go with my silvers. Ugh.

I know that if I didn't live in the US and faced import duty on it - it wouldn't be worth it to me at that point though.

I went ahead and checked out my dogwood cart... Got a large, a mini, and a pair of U-pins. I considered an XS as well but that just seemed excessive. :p

It'll probably come as no surprise that I consider Ficcares to be outrageously overpriced for machine-made clips! ;) What bugs me about the diversity of price points in Flexis, though, is that it invariably seems to be the gold clips that are significantly more expensive. It makes me feel as though I'm being penalised for my colouring, because cool tones don't work as well for me as warm ones and so I rarely wear silver.

The price of the XL isn't high enough to incur customs duties in my country, but yes, extra customs charges would bump the price of pretty much any hairtoy into a range where I couldn't justify it to myself. And of course the free shipping offers for purchases of $50 or over are useless for international customers for the same reason -- it makes no sense to save $4 on shipping only to end up paying an extra twenty or thirty euros in customs! I wish there were a legal way for them not to state the value of the contents on the envelope. :(

Which is probably because they need to send the pins off to be gold plated by another company - which makes the materials more expensive and hence drives up the cost. I doubt they make them more expensive on purpose to punish you :p

:hmm: Mmm.... I don't buy many flexis, but dogwood is so pretty. I love the pearls and it would match one of my favorite pairs of earrings. I think I will splurge on it. But I don't buy many flexis because I'm too picky about price, metal (I prefer gold), and design. It has to match my standards for all three and so I usually pass. They have gotten rather expensive, but I will say that I think the designs in the last year or so have been much MUCH nicer than years past. Maybe it's just me. I think in the last year they've gotten much more elegant and less tacky looking.

a lot of them are still tacky though, and i can't see buying more than i have. :( I was scared to look at the new pricing in fear i'd fall in love with a new one, but i lucked out. They don't appeal to me as much when i recognize some of the beads from the clearance section of my craft store...

How sturdy are the Upins? I really like the Dogwood ones, but I'm afraid my hair will eat them like it did with the hair sticks I got from Lillarose a couple of years ago.

Theobroma

The u-pins are very sturdy. I don't think you need to worry at all -- the pins are thick and rigid, you can't bend them with your fingers the way you can Bijoux Manoel's.

I don't know where you live in Europe, but in my country it absolutely is a fact that if the stated value of the parcel is over the limit, you WILL get stung for customs. Unlucky has nothing to do with it. Nothing gets past the Austrian customs office.

And, frankly, there isn't a single hairtoy on the market that's worth paying that much extra for, least of all a Flexi.

I had to pay customs 1 out of 5 times, I think. So I usually risk it when I'm above 22€

Also I'm always on the lookout for european alternatives. There are many nice shops on dawanda. Cultmate has different modells from lilla rose, so it's always worth a look.

The customs limit in Austria is somewhere around €45, I believe, so if your parcels were above €22 but under €45 you wouldn't have been liable for customs duties in any case. That might explain why you only got stung once in five times.

I can tell you that not a single parcel I've ever received has slipped through customs if it was above the limit.

BTW I'll never buy a Flexi from Cultmate again. The last time I ordered there they bunged two Flexis in a padded envelope without even putting them in separate plastic bags to keep them from scuffing each other up, and both clips were asymmetrical and faulty (one had at least one extra bead on one side that distorted the whole loop, and the centre on the other sat at a weird angle as soon as there was hair in the clip). It just isn't worth the risk in my book, because returning sending anything back would still involve paying postage to Germany.

ooo
April 6th, 2016, 07:32 AM
Well customs limit is 150€, but the international VAT (EuSt) limit is 22€, because under 5€ of Vat it's free. So goods of 22€ get about 5€ of Vat. We don't have any limit of 45€ according to the ministry of finances (https://www.bmf.gv.at/zoll/post-internet/internet-shopping.html#heading_Wann_fallen_Abgaben_beim_Onl ine_Einkauf_in_Drittl_ndern_an_). Or maybe you are right? How do you know that?

I was always very happy with everything I got from cultmate, although I've heard of several people having made bad experiences with them. Sorry :flower:

edit: also I'll probly eddit the bit about Vat and customs, since well it's a public forum.

So maybe what I was paying was import sales tax and not customs duties, I don't know, but I've never paid whatever-it-is on Flexis and I can't remember the last time I received a parcel from Flexi that was worth less than thirtysomething euros. I'm aware of the information on the ministry website; I can only report what my experience has been. And I've bought rather a lot of Flexis in my time.

I've got an £11.06 customs charge on an £18 ($21.60) clip (Bella). Makes for an expensive clip :(
I'm sure it was better value to buy 2+ (I've got 5 other ones, I bought 2 and then 3 in previous sales).

ETA:
The Bella is the most expensive one I have bought so far, previous to that it was the Sapphire Ice at $19.60
I bought my first 2 together and the next ones separately, they escaped customs (the limit here is £15)

Small to medium - here is the link :)

My boyfriend says they're made in China, and the shipping label from LR says it comes from China. He finds it odd that we haven't found any European sellers.

Theobroma
April 7th, 2016, 04:21 AM
Lisa Long4Life, it's been my understanding that while they are made in China, they're specifically made for LR in the US and available to buy only from them or some official distributor. Cultmate seems to be such a distributor; at least, their clips used to have the old www.flexi8.com URL on the pin and now presumably have the new address.

It does seem odd, though, that no European outlet stocks the full line. But even if there were one, the clips would be more expensive to buy here than direct from the US, since the distributor would have to pay import taxes and customs on their stock and that would be factored into the retail price here.

Lisa Long4Life
April 7th, 2016, 04:38 AM

I'll stick to buying in the sales in future because £29 is a bit much for a hair accessory.

Sadly, that's true.. I've bought from cultmate many times with no issues, but that one time I did have a problem with the clip I received (a ficcare, so it wasn't exactly cheap), I received no reply. I even sent them pictures of the problem areas on the clip.
I continue to buy from them because they don't state the value of the clips on the box, which means that I can buy pricey stuff without being hit by customs and handling fees, but I can't deny that their customer service is seriously lacking.

As to the Flexi with the rose. I saw it on cultmate, but they did not have it in my size. So I asked Steve from flexi8.com. That's how I got it. In the good old flexi8.com days when you could have everything you wished for.

You can buy pricey stuff even if they put it on the box, I think. As far as I remember (but don't pin me on it  ) it is a transaction within Europe so I don't think it is subject to such things. Now if you bought from OUTSIDE of Europe it's different.

Sorry to hear about your experience, that just sucks!

Yep, that's correct. If I buy something from any other country, even in the EU, and the item costs more than $42 including shipping, I have to pay customs and handling fees. I think hairtoys might be exempt from customs fees, but they still make me pay a fortune for handling and some other stuff. I think I've only managed to avoid fees twice in all the years I've been buying stuff online, and I've been over the limit many many times.

Holy cow, 000, are there really so many illiterates in Vienna these days? I never heard anything like that when I studied there in the 90s...

Theobroma, looking at the recent elections, all the illiterates are an explanation for the outcome.

edit: an other spin would be, that no one speaks English here, so they might think it's voodoo.

I'm pretty sure I had some others yesterday, but can't remember anymore.

Eh, I still like this month's FotM -- I just don't like it enough to justify paying $28 for an XL! I'm a little ticked off that there hasn't been a sale, to be honest. I'd get it in a heartbeat even for only 10% off.

Afterthought: Well, I might like it enough to pay the full price if I didn't already have so many Flexis. But at some point a sort of saturation effect sets in.

Yeah, I think saturation effect has hit me too. I'm much more picky nowadays (though i'm still kicking myself for not getting Bella and now it's sold out in my size. Oh well!).

I haven't even picked up one of the new Ficcares and have no immediate plans to do so, though I like them. Must go take temperature now...........

I am so glad that I don't like the May FOTM. So I ordered another dogwood flexi, this time in size xs for half ups. I already have one in medium and the u-pins and for me this is one of the most beautiful styles they ever made.

Now I have only the hibiscus sea and sunset u-pins on my wish list but I am waiting for a sale to get these.

I saw the flitter flexi in person today at a farmer's market type thing, I think I might have to cave in a month or two and buy it, it's sooo pretty. :crush: Also the teeny tiny matching dragonfly bobby pins were extra adorable, but a little too pricey for me, I know I would break them or lose them immediately.

I know this has been asked a thousand times before here, possibly even by me, but there's really no advantage to buying through a consultant versus the website, right?

I buy from a consultant. I also follow her on facebook and she has giveaways. I've won one large flexi so it's worth it to me to buy through a consultant. She also runs specials where she throws a party and anyone who buys gets a chance to be the party host (or whatever it's called) and get the host gifts based on what the party buys. One other special was she offered free shipping if we bought through her during one of the sales.

I have just adjusted a flexi to make it more usable. I NEVER wore it, ever. Now that is something that is sad, right? But it was simply way too long on me!

Here is what it looked like long ago when I had just bought it:

Today I grabbed my small pliers and took this off:

And now the flexi looks like this, MUCH more usable like this for sure.

Great job, eadwine! I always had my doubts about the wearability of that Flexi because of the length of the bottom loop, and your post bears me out. It's actually much better proportioned after your mod too -- an aesthetic improvement as well as a practical one!

So...heres my flexi being used in what is supposed to be an Edwardian Era hairstyle. It's a bit messy as it was taken by the end of the day but I think it still looks nice
I'm happy it turned out well, as I now have a style where I can use my flexi in L. I was worried as I almost never used it, and when I did it was in weird sorts of twists which weren't really appropriate.
I have to continue experimenting, as I have an S and M on the way. This type of hairstyles is great for smaller flexis.

I am seeking advice from those who have used You Pins (or U Pins - I've seen them use both spellings). My hair is almost BSL but not very thick due to a major shed. My updos are fairly small so I usually use smaller hair toys (4-5" sticks, short Amish pins, a M/L Flexi, etc.). So I went for the short You Pins... and they dig into my scalp whenever I use them. I was really excited about the curved shape that would "hug" my scalp, but I don't see how I can get them to sit prettily on the sides of an updo without the tips pointing down towards my scalp. I don't have this problem with more traditional pins, just these short You Pins - even just looking at them, the length and shape seem to make this an inevitable problem because they curve more sharply than the curve of my scalp. I've got a long pair on the way, but I love the short ones I have (in the Ruby Bouquet design) and want to make them work! Any tips?

I saw on Instagram that a lady had posted the some new flexis 'in the catalogue' but I'm not sure what that means. The flexis are called a 'braided 8' and they look like a wooden/plastic stick with a leather braided bit for the 8 part (I'm hoping it isn't real leather!) If you search on instagram for 'flexi8' you'll see it.

I like the braided leather concept, but maybe not these exact styles. But mostly, I've been looking for more Flexis that aren't so beaded/sparkly/obvious to wear with more casual clothes, and this might fit the bill. I wonder if the non-metal sticks are attached, or just a loose stick like a lot of the faux Flexis?

Good question, because the wire is a really integral part of the "feel" of a Flexi. Lilla Rose already has a few styles that aren't fully beaded, like Keeya, Elizabeth, and Abby - I'm not sure whether those have a wire, either.

Both medium and opted for no stick.

For the other one I have a nice Amadlife0 stick with a ring on it that will fit with it just fine so no need to spend the extra $.

I'm taking a pass. I absolutely love the colours of the honey bee, but I'm sure the dangly would annoy me. (I never wear my Colours on Parade because the rattly nature of the tail dangle gets on my nerves. Seriously considering plucking my peacock's tail feathers!)

And I'm not sold on the other new designs either -- at least, not enough to get them. I have one of the older clips with vinyl tubing (Pearl) and don't care for the cheap plasticky feel of it, so I don't want to take a chance on these new ones with the puffier tubing, though I love the look of the dragon centre. As for the leather ones, I'm not sure I'd wear a leather hair slide with a loose stick. I had one years ago and I'm kind of over the concept, because back in the day it was my only hairsafe toy and so I wore it often enough to get rather bored with it.

That said, I'm mildly intrigued with the idea of being able to get just the 8 and making my own stick. Has anyone ordered a leather style? I'd be interested to know if they do indeed have the piano wire inside!

There's no real urgency, eadwine, so I'm happy to wait until you get yours and report back. :)

I have a huge pile of Flexis and, honestly, every time a new style comes out that I like I find myself going "yes, it's pretty, but I have this and that other one that covers those colours and I'm not wearing it as much as I could be, do I really need to add to the hoard?" And then I find myself content with just admiring the pictures. The more so since the prices have risen to a level where I do seriously ask myself whether it's worth it to me.

I tried a lazy wrap bun and a cinnamon bun but the flexi' s are too small for that. I tried a braid and flip it over with a flexi but then it pulls my hair and it's not feeling comfortable. Should I need a bigger size? Or can I try another hairstyle with them?

Seraphina, if you have a lot of hair, size L might be too small for you. Do you use the flexi like a hair stick or like a bun cage?
You could try using the clip in a centerheld bun, a french twist or for decoration only. Gibson Braids might be an option as well. I also have seen people using smaller flexiclips in a cinnamon, attaching it sideways (the way you would use a ficcare).

I love the new honey bee! But not enough to spend a total of 35$ on size large (including shipping and tax).

I own a few pairs! They're fairly thin (<1/4" diameter), and very lightweight. They're completely straight and untextured, and rather pointy at the tip. I can use a single stick with my hair when the stick is a bit thicker or has some texture (twists, zig-zag, varying diameter), but I like to use both because these are so smooth and dainty.

Compared to the sticks I own from Etsy sellers, or even my own DIYs, I feel like these look a little cheap up close - just some beads slapped onto a plain stick, not well-centered on every stick, and the beads are sort of loose and rattle a little. But from afar, they're pretty and tie nicely into other products.

Hi Seraphina! Maybe you do need a larger one. I don't have an L, but from what I've seen there is not a huge difference between an XL and an L, just a normal size up. How I can still use the ones that are too small for other buns is in a nautilus bun. You only insert the flexi in the middle part, so centre held. Or try it in a braided nautilus (for me braids make the bun more compact, maybe it works for you). If the nautilus works with an L, then the L is definitely too small for your other buns. You may still be able to use the L's in buns where you make a half up bun, fasten it with the flexi, and then wrap the rest of your hair around it.

Not quite since the launch of the new site, morrigan, but their prices did go up recently... by just enough to make me think twice about buying as much as I used to!

I did get one recently, but i really liked it, and there was a discount i think, because it was fotm in large and it was les than 20 eur with shipping. So i was a bit surprised when i saw prices now, there is no way i could buy two larges and not pay quiet high tax fee on top of it :(
I think i will wait for discount to buy one or two again.

Same here. I liked last month's FotM, but not enough to pay the full price for an XL. Hoping for it to come back during a sale...

I'm hoping the bee one comes back during a sale. I'm just not going to pay XL prices when they're this high.

Dragon Flexi action shots, I hope these aren't too big. I wanted to post a close up of the flexi

I kind of like that one, esp. the large one! Pretty!

Is there a thread specifically on Flexi styles? I tried using search and couldn't find one. I was playing around with my XS and pulled all the hair from the temples and up into a twist at the back and secured it with my XS but I had to switch to the large if I wanted to secure a mini bun.

My flexis are in the country so HOPEFULLY with a bit of luck I will be able to show them to you this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon. I also ordered two sticks in 4.5" (not that dreaded 6"! ugh) to match the theme which are now on their way as well. :)

Got them in! But there is something wrong :(

I just sent a mail to Steve at Lillarose.

Attached a picture of three flexis size medium, the dark camel is WAAYYYYYY too big. I have an L size flexi here and this dark camel is almost an inch longer than that one. I wager they put an XL in the baggie.

Wait and see what is going to happen, because this I can wear as a bra, almost ;)

To add.. the medium red one is actually a size L :/ Wrote about that as well just now.

And the bee!

Awww! The bee is adorable, eadwine! How odd about the sizes of the others, though. It clearly says "MD" on the labels of all three baggies, but the sizes of the clips inside them is very obviously all over the map!

Can you at least wear the red one? From the look of the medium in relation to your bun you might be able to pull off a larger loop and still have it hold firmly.

The bee is cute, I think it looks better in your action shot than on the website.

I COULD wear the red one, yes, I have two other L sized flexis, but it is definitely too large right now at this length, and at longer lengths it is not something I could wear when I were to be dancing or doing some other kind of intensize movement (like work). So.. I order Ms for a reason :)

I am happy with the bee though, but that is getting a bit overshadowed with the issue of the other two :(

The bee one is just too cute, but it is not on that they got so much of your order wrong. It's only normal you sent Steve an e-mail. Wonder what he's gonna say.

Me too.. I hope it is favorable in the exchange or resend area, I have two sticks on the way for these puppies and I don't wear sticks normally (unless I am at .. like.. tailbone.. which is YEARS away still, I just hit waist, barely).

Yes, I can imagine. At least their customer service has always been first-rate, so getting the correct sizes will hopefully only be a matter of time.

Yup, I hope all works out fine. *sigh* :( I have had it happen that ONE was wrong, but TWO out of an order.. :(

Hopefully it's just teething troubles with the new styles. Possibly they're being made somewhere else and the suppliers were sloppy about putting the right sizes in the right bags...
