Can someone please help me to figure out my size? I would like to use a flexi-8 for a bun like the one in this pic. What do you think, L or XL?

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1388&pictureid=48717

And for a pony bun, M or L?

I'm not sure what size exactly you would need, but for the half up M is definitely too small (not sure how large the L and XL are though).

get an XL, that's the only thing that will do.

It very much depends on the way you want to use the Flexi's.
Do you want them to cover the complete bun, or partly.
I use M to XXL for full buns and ;)

Thanks for your help :) Maybe I get one of each size ;) I think I'm going to order 2 or 3 flexis in different sizes. I just have to choose... :)

I have a question for those of you that have had their flexi's customized (whether only changing the centerpiece or making a totally original design).
Do the discount code work for customized items as well?

I changed the centrepiece on two flexi's and they still accepted the discount code.

I'd give it a little while before I gave up. I had problems receiving an order not too long ago, and I thought they weren't going to return my emails, but they did get back to me and sorted out the problems (it took a week or so for their response from the time I emailed them though).

They just responded to my 2nd e-mail (maybe they didn't get the 1st one)and told me how to do a custom order but what I want isn't listed.
I am looking for the simple band in gold and I know I seen a picture of one on here. So I am off to look.

I kind of want a celtic knot set with black beads. I want more 'masculine' hair toys---or as masculine as something can be while still being called a 'hair toy'. Not that I really care, but I still like more stoic looking stuff.

Anyway, I think the o-rings just latch over a ponytail and clip on the other side. They're just flexi's withou a bar and turned on their sides with a latch, I think.

I ordered 3 flexi's and I got them a few days ago :) They are beautiful but they were smaller than I thought... Or maybe it's my hair that is thicker than I thought ;) I'm sure I'm going to order more flexis. The small one that i've planned to use for ponytails is a little but too small for that so I want to try a medium. And the XL didnt cover all my bun so I would like to try an XXL too :)

Boon, I just got my flexis yesterday, and seems like I didn't give my hair thickness enough credit either. :)

I was somewhat disappointed, since I expected the handle to be this seamless real all-metal part or something, I'm not sure how to explain it, but they do their job very well. I also didn't really like the color of the brass one I ordered, I didn't expect it to be so golden, I'm just not a fan of golden colored things, it makes them look cheap in my eyes. I wish I could henna it lol.

Anyway, unlike what it seems, I'm really happy I got them - now I can wear a ponytail and half ups which work better with my curls.

I have a question about a really, really old 4inch (-ish) flexi-8 I own. I got it at a craft fair about 6-7 years ago, but I've never been able to make it work for me in any way. It's in it's original condition because it's never even been worn out of the house. I was going to put it up on the swap board along with two smallish (also about 4 inches) beak clips, but then I got thinking that no one would want one that old. It's silver toned and has heart beads all around it and a simple, swirly Celtic looking knot/cross in the middle. Since this one never worked for me, I didn't pursue using any other sizes (I know, pretty closed minded of me :/ ) so I don't know what styles are popular now.

I guess what I'm asking is if anyone thinks it's worth listing. I don't want it and it's just going to sit around collecting dust in my toy drawer if I keep it.

My Flexi is starting to grow on me. It's kinda easy on days when my hair is really silky and falls out of sticks and such. I've also used it to pin up my hair while I run, although not always successfully. I might have to see about ordering a plain one for when my hair gets longer and the end of my running braid gets annoying.

I have a small flexi which I bought for using with ponytails, but I never do, since it snags. However, I have a large that I use for updos that have never snagged at all, and the small one doesn't snag if used to decorate a braid or to hold a half-up. I can barely squeeze my ponytail into it, so I think that might be the reason why it snags when I try to. Cause otherwise I have no problems.

This thread enabled me - I bought 5: two minis, a small, and two mediums.

But in a fit of annoyance with my hair, I chopped off about three inches this morning. I was so sick of my layers making my ends look thin! But now the hairdos I normally gravitate towards don't seem to work the same way. <ugh>

This has a twofold effect - I probably won't be able to use the medium flexis for a while, but also I am hoping that the smaller flexis will help me through this awkward stage of growing.

I can't wait for them to arrive!

Hi all. I accidentally started a Flexi thread and then saw this. I asked the mods to delete it. Anyway since this thread is now 81 pages!!!! I am too lazy to read through all of it to find my answer. I did read up to page 11. :)

I have 1AFii hair. What size do you think I should get? I like wearing pony tails. I know the site tells you how to order. Is it pretty accurate? I didn't know if anyone on here had my hair type and have ordered one. If so what size did you get?

I really am going to try and read through at least some of this thread. It's fun seeing everyone's flexies and styles.

I'm back!!! I checked the video on the Flexi 8 page. It looks like I would need an extra small for a half up and a small for a pony. So I'm going to try those. I guess I pretty much answered my own question. I can't wait to try them!!! Are those codes still good?

Chrissy, I have a similar hair type, and I have all the wrong sizes for my hair! Mini is too small for a half-up, small and medium are both too big for a pony, and medium is too small for a bun or twist. I'm thinking I'll sell/swap all the ones I have and get an extra-small and a large.

Hm, it's been a while since I ordered, but I think I noticed this myself. I seem to recall that my order never left 'waiting' status, I got my confirmation email, and I got the flexis too, a week or two later (overseas shipping, whoo!), but I think my order was listed as 'waiting' all the time. Not sure if I remember correctly though.

I just got a shipping confirmation email and the status on the page has changed to shipped.

Have they ever made larger than extra large ones custom? Maybe that would be able to hold a bun for me, because I have to make a more oval shape for the XL to fit.

HildeMV, yes, the XXL in the post Ryanne linked to was also a custom (different beads).
You have to choose an XL as base and then say you'd like it in XXL, and if you want different beads you can request that too :-)

Hello Chrissy,

My hair is 1bFii (only just ii - with a 2.3" circumference). For my pony tail, I have now purchased an Extra Small as the Small keeps on slipping out - I have very slippery hair. :o
The only way I can use the Small, is hooked in at the top (nape area) of my braid which looks quite pretty too.

Hope this helps, Charlotte :)

Can someone please tell me what size I should order to hold a cinnamon bun? I am thinking large? Or should I go all the way to extra large? I want it to go all the way over the bun. I am midback, 1c/2a, m, ii (very average ii)... my goal is waist (about 4 more inches)........

I just received my order and I am pleasantly surprised by the flexi's quality. From the pictures on the website, I was expecting cheap beaded pap, but these actually feel very well-made to me. I did a quick test run on all the sizes and I can actually use every single size I ordered in a hairstyle I use fairly frequently. The large fits my cinnabun perfectly, the medium fits my french twist perfectly, the small fits my ponytail, and the extra small and mini both work as braid enders or half-ups, depending on how much hair I feel like using and where I end my braid. (For anyone wanting to use this as reference, my pony circumference is just a little under three inches.) I'm impressed, and eagerly awaiting their next free shipping offer.

These are so beautiful! Thanks everyone for sharing. I didn't read every single page of this thread, but enough to drool over the flexi-8's. My hair is only shoulder length right now...but it's long enough to put up in a small twist or a French braid. Hmmm...

I also have a sizing estimate question.

I have M/ii (3" circumfrence) hair that's shoulder-length. I'd like to use the Flexi for French twists mostly, just so my hair stops rubbing on my collar. What size do you think I should get?

ETA: I just realized they have a sizing VIDEO on their site. Silly me.

Thank you, Sigzephyr. :) I made a nautilus bun with my half-up. Here is a video tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-BQ5OMV2Y) I found on youtube. I wrap my length around the base of the loop only once and allow the rest to hang down. The Flexi is over the bump in the middle. (I also happen to make this bun on my left hand instead of my right, but that shouldn't make a difference to how it turns out.)

You may be able to do a "lazy wrap" bun and use the lg. flexi-8 instead of a stick.

The medium works well for me but my hair is much shorter than yours.

Apart from the lazy wrap already suggested, if you do the Eresh style bun on a French braid base, it helps keep the flexi straight. (I do mine with smalls, I can't imagine needing a large :( )

My only problem is, I got all excited adding such beads to such design in my mind yesterday, and then I came back to this thread and I'm wondering if the combination I was planning on getting isn't the exact same as yours  The basis I want to take is this one: http://www.flexi8.com/1234.html?id=Z5ywjYx7 and I'd like to have the pink beads swapped for Aurora Borealis ones. Is this combo the same as yours?
If anything, this shows how deep an impression your pictures made on me, but I feel this is rather missing the point of having something custom-made  (stupid I know).

I really have my mind set on this center (I don't want it to look too celtic or too elfish, so that rather limits the choice :o) but I might swap the AB beads I had in mind for clear light blue beads.
How well do the AB beads catch the light? I mean, do they really reflect various colours well or do they look more like plain crystal beads?

I'm letting my ideas sift for a while and will get back to the Flexi page later :)

Hi! I live in Norway and recently (28 October) made my first purchase of Flexi-8 hairclips and was able to take advantage of their Free Shipping offer. Unfortunately, that offer ended on 1 November. Så synd!

However, you might still be able to use the ongoing discount code "32088" (without quotes) either to receive 10% off of your purchase or to buy 4 and get 1 free. This should offset some (if not all) of your shipping fee. Lykke til!

Hi everyone. The 8 things haha looks so good. I want one!! Is it only in Usa you can bye one? In that case what does the total cost be? With shipping and so to Sweden..I hope someone now the answer.. I looked att the page where they sell thoose...They are so lovely,.,..

Have a nice day...

I suspect the shipping would be the same to Sweden as to the Netherlands.
It was $7 for 5 flexi's.

Lykke til!

[P.S.: I am still waiting for delivery of my purchase.]I ordered on the exact same day and have yet to get my flexis. And I have been stalking the mailman. I really had high hopes for it coming today.

The code works fine and dandy. It has for a long time.

Yep it's the same :-) I think it would look lovely in your hair!
They reflect those AB colours different everytime, depending on the way the light fall on it.
Light blue clear beads don't really show up in my hair, but the also have light blue AB beads.
Thank you Eresh :flowers: You wouldn't mind my using the same style as yours?
I didn't know about the blue AB beads, will have to look into that.

Still having my thinking cap on, I think I'm going to take another stroll in this thread and get inspired by everyone's pictures :)

Jennie: When ordering to Sweden, you might want to keep the order(+shipping?) under 300kr, or otherwise you might have to pay tax for it, plus charges for the work to control it. That means that it can actually be cheaper to buy only one or two small at a time with shipping every time, than many at the same time and only have one shipping.

Did you see the nifty videos on the flexi-8 website? I found they were really helpful.

For a ponytail, I'd recommend a medium for your thickness. :)

Hey. Oh, yes. I have forgotten to write this. I want to make buns with that. For half-ups and ponytails I want to buy so others...but later :D:D

Isa-belle
November 19th, 2009, 08:10 AM
OK... I'd say you could use a large for most buns. An XL might be good for braided buns.

I have about the same thickness as yours and I started using a XL for my buns (wearing it as I type :D) when my hair was about 80 cm (31"). I'm not sure I would have needed one before that. My braided bun has now outgrown my XL (my hair is currently 93 cm) but I can still use it for more "squishy" buns :)

ETA: Bottom line is, if you don't want to invest in too many flexis and you plan on growing your hair longer, you'll probably always find a use for an XL. If you want an excuse to order more later (and you'll WANT to, trust me :D) you might consider starting with a large.
I still use my large to wrap my braid around it, as in the pinless braided bun (http://www.io.com/~cortese/hair/styling.html#pinless).

PS: Welcome to LHC! :flower:

Depends on the man, I'd say ;)
I've seen male LHC'ers look very good with flexis.
This one (http://www.flexi8.com/0079.html), for example, is quite plain.

I have one like that, but small. i often wear it to church. But usually I prefer the ones with colored transparent beads. Depends on the man.

I might get some with danglies, but if I do, I'm going to get a pair, one mirror-reversed.

I've been wanting to get some Flexi's for quite a while now, but I don't know which sizes to get! I'm looking for ones that I can do half-ups, ponytails, as well as some for buns/updos. I think the x-smalls would be good for holding smaller locks of hair up, but I don't know what sizes to get for the other styles.

My ponytail circumference is 4-1/4" and my hair is about an inch and a half from waist (somewhere between waist and BSL). Any recommendations?

EDIT: I found the Sizing Guide page on the Flexi-8 Web site. My ponytail is bigger than a quarter and I'm thinking it's in the Medium size range. I'd still appreciate some recommendations from those who have used them. :)

Medium is probably good for a ponytail. I have a small one, which is just too small for ponytails, and my circumference is more or less exactly 4 inches. For buns I'd say XL. XS is probably good for half-ups.

ETA: Are we hair twins? ;)

I went and looked at your hair gallery, and our hair does look alike, especially the one that you took after brushing your hair upside down. :) I remember when I first joined LHC and I thought my hair was type 1a,l but I noticed that as long as I don't comb it or manipulate it while wet, I get some wurls at my temples/sides. :D I lose them very easily, though and I want to find a means of preserving my wavies rather than having my hair be straightish.

Back to topic!

I think I will ask Santa/St. Nick for some flexis for Christmas/Yule. The dangly aurora one and the dolphin one are so pretty!

Isa-belle
December 3rd, 2009, 03:39 AM
Hi MissManda :)

My ponytail circumference is probably slightly smaller than yours, and I wear a medium for ponytails - but it's not bursting at the seams, so I'm guessing it would probably work for you.
I use an XS for half-ups.
If you like to make big half-ups (i.e. really put up HALF of your hair), then the small might work. I like to make my half-ups smaller, and the XS is good for that.

Happy shopping! :D

I was thinking the Small for half-ups until I can get all of my layers grown out, then I think the X-small will work just fine. So a half-up for me really is a half-up. If I just take a quarter/third of my hair, it doesn't want to stay properly.

Okay, so I would like to get some Flexi 8's for myself, but also for my MIL. I went and looked through the Flexi 8 Web site some more today and I saw some designs that she would just LOVE. :D I would really like to give her a gift this year, since I missed out last year. I think a Flexi 8 would be perfect for her because:

~ She likes pretty hairtoys and she doesn't have anything resembling a Flexi 8.
~ I like to give more "practical" gifts, meaning I like to give gifts that people can use and re-use, unless it is yummy food/candy, like mugs, clothes, scarves, jewelry, etc.
~ She likes Celtic themes, and the Celtic knot Flexis are just gorgeous!
~ A Flexi would look sooo pretty in her hip-length, 2b/2c hair! Hee hee.

Now I have some questions to ask. I showed my BF one of the Celtic knot Flexis, and he said that they were really pretty too. Since he has the same kind of hair as his mom does, he was concerned with the Flexi would get caught up in her hair (it has the tendency to frizz). Has anyone with a similar hair type experienced this with Flexis? I don't want to give her something she won't like!

My second problem is that I don't know which size to get her. She has thick hair like my BF (thick enough to make my ponytail look sad thick), but it's thinned out in the past few years. I've seen her wear buns, braids, half-ups, down, and in a ponytail (both with an elastic). I want to ask her about her pony circumference to get a general idea.

I also want to show her a picture (but not the style that I want to get her), so I am wondering if I can "borrow" a picture of some Flexis to show her in an e-mail. I want to know if it's something she will wear.

I really appreciate the help! Thank you!

May I ask how you made this bun - did you twist part of your hair and put it up, then pin it with the flexi, then twist and wrap the rest of your length around that?
It's so very lovely. :)

Heidi_234
December 5th, 2009, 08:19 AM
Isabelle, you can do it by making a flexi-8 ponytail and then wrapping the tail around the base under the flexi and tucking the end. But I like it more the other way around - I make a not-poke-though-the-outer-layer Gibraltar bun first and then secure it with the flexi instead of a stick, this makes it less lopsided (although it has it's own charm :))

I just bought two new Flexis. Xmas-gifts. One for me and one for another lovely girl. :) I had a hard time deciding which size to get for myself, since I really couldn't afford more than one, but I chose medium since that is the one I use the most right now. That size is great for inside-out knots, orchid buns and Karen-Lynn knots. :) I will show you as soon as the new flexi arrives. :)

Oooh! Very lovely choices! I must say that I really like the festive poinsetta one. I am not particularly fond of festive or holiday-themed jewelry, but I take that back now. I also love the dolphin one--I want one for myself and now I want to get a Flexi for a friend of mine who loves dolphins.

My BF and I agreed that we're not paying rent out of my bank account this month, so I think I'm going to order some flexis!

mini's are good for half updo's.

saskia_madding
December 11th, 2009, 07:25 AM
They are also goo for "fake" half ups - I take a strand of hair from the side of each side of the crown, and then use the mini to keep those together at the back of my head.

This is like a half up, except it leaves more hair hanging down, thus increasing the volume. I like it.

I got mine yesterday. I must say the minis are definately too small for anything.

I take very top part of my hair, small amount, for half-up. The mini flexi sits higher on my head.

I have three minis and realized I could not use one of them because beads were too big. So I asked them to replace. Some use minis to pin hair to the side.

You can also exchange with XS or other sizes if you would like. They are really nice about it.

But I can't do anything with the XS.
Sometimes my mini's are too small and the XS is too little..

I'm practicing putting only a little hair in a half up for the mini. It is really difficult not to get too much of hair into it. I wish I followed my intuition and got XS ones. I have been suspecting for a while my hair isn't as thin as I thought.

The colors are beautiful!:cheese:

Ok, this is not a Flexi - but similar enough I had to try it.
It worked ok in this pic as well as pulling everything up into a bun/twist thingy of sorts. It is by no means smoothed out - I sort of threw it in damp hair - had to run. It was FAR more comfortable than the 'jaw'! Based on this, I know I'm going to love the Flexi's. Hair sticks - probably not so much! Yes, it is dark colored - almost rich cocoa w/o the reddish tint - :o

I don't use the mini much. Mostly to pull back my bangs. (Edited to add: My hair is parted on the side so I use it to hold the larger side of my bangs.)
The ex-small I use as a half-up.
The small I use as a ponytail holder.
The medium holds twists or rolls well.
I was using it for the lazy wrap bun but it was getting too snug and so I ordered the large ones.

I have a wish list for more about a mile long.
I love that you can use them for wet hair and that they won't slide out like a stick will.
I just love them!

Just a question.....how many flexis is too many?? Do you all use them more than sticks and forks or ficcares? or do flexis hold better than sticks? I have several flexis and love them! My hair is at apl and am not able to get sticks to work very good, and have two ficcares, the medium seems to fit my head better. Just seems like to me the flexis work better for all my hairstyles-- usually braided up, or french twist.

Yes I use them more than forks or ficcares.
Yes I think they hold better than sticks because they have the added flexible 8. I think they're both functional and pretty. But I'm not sure when I will think I have too many :p

Oh! Sorry... I don't know how or where to view a "visitor message" on this forum. I am happy to see that you have received a positive response from them; I telephoned last night and spoke with a customer service representative who noted my information and called me back! [I was very impressed with the level of attention!] They apologized for the failed delivery and promised to re-send my order via Priority post (est. 5-day delivery time) on the very same day. :cheese:

Best of luck to you!

Really? O_o Well, that's a bummer. Well, if I find that I don't like the brass one, I guess I'll have to exchange it for something else. . . I really do prefer brass to gold because it is less showy. Thanks for the tip.
