I'd be afraid of breaking the Flexi if I slept on it. And it would hurt, I think.

I can't stand sleeping on a bun, (or even a top knot) so a flexi would make it more uncomfortable.

July 5th, 2012, 08:37 AM
I sleep in a top knot bun often. I secure it with a 7" hairstick when I do, and I've never had a problem with it poking, sliding, or breaking. The key is that it really is exactly on top, so the bun itself never brushes against anything. I think a flexi would work for me the same way, but I don't have one large enough to secure a bun yet.

I ALWAYS sleep in a messy bun held in place by an XL Flexi :). I wear it anywhere from the center back to the upper back of my head. I cover it in a silk bonnet :p. It holds comfortably all night :D. Can't think of a better way to sleep

I just started my collection with an order of 20, which arrived yesterday - in an assortment of all sizes, but most of the order was for large. I think extra large was the biggest one I got - not the mega. I tried a couple on, and fell in love, immediately. They work so well and stay in the hair.

I had purchased a paper/cardboard decorated box at a garage sale for 25 cents. It has a top layer and when that is open, a bottom drawer is expose, which you can open. I put all 20 in the box, so if I ever add any more, they will not fit in the box.

I don't know if any of you are old enough to remember some plastic hair clips from the late 70s, early 80s, which were made using the same idea, but not a figure eight design. They were oval shapes and had the stick which you slid through the hair and brought up and over to close. They were basically one size just large enough for hair on either side of the head, not for updos. I still have mine, in a variety of colors.

My new flexi arrived today! The small was the perfect size for a pony (but almost TOO small!), thank you all who suggested it. I'm shocked at how quickly it arrived...standard mail, from CA to PA, shipped Tuesday and got it today. And there was a holiday in there!!!

So... I think this thread sold me. They are very pretty! I'm having trouble with the sizes though.. I'm thinking I'd need x-small for half up, but I'm torn between what I'd need for buns. My buns usually use up around 4.5 inches of hair stick. Large? Is the size of my hair sticks an okay way to judge it?

I don't think using hairstick size is particularly accurate, because with a flexi part of it has to actually come over the top of the bun.

I use a M or L for my buns, so i would say definatly no smaller than a L for a bun on you. for me an XS only just holds a half up (as in it's almost too big) so I would guess with your extra thickness an XS would be a good size for you

Also a question for the rest of you - are flexi's ok to use on wet/damp hair or will they get damaged?

I'll be able to judge by your ponytail circumference. If it's an 3" or so, then yes, a Large for updos.

Thanks!! Yeah, my circumference is a bit over 3 inches. I'll go with the large and I think I'll order an x-large too. Worst case I'll grow into it if it doesn't fit. :D

Thanks so much! There I was considering a medium at the very first...lol

Okay, Flexi lovers, I need some advice! :D I want to get a couple of Flexis to do mini double cinnabuns this summer. I use a XL for a single cinnabun and it fits very nicely. I have a medium that I use for half-ups (I make a tiny cinnabun rather than just leave that hair loose - what can I say, apparently I love cinnabuns!). I'd originally thought I'd get smalls, but I just tried the medium on one mini bun and to be honest, it was almost too small. So what I need to know: for those of you who have worn both M and L, what's the real size/weight difference? I'm trying to decide if I want to order mediums and just deal with the size issue, or get larges and run the risk that they'll be too big. The large pin size isn't that much bigger than a medium, but I'm also considering the actual "flexi" part of it, since I need to make sure they both fit on my head lol. Any thoughts?

girloctopus
July 6th, 2012, 07:34 PM
I think I'd go for a large, and you can always grow into them if they're a wee bit big!

I think I'm going to buy a few more megas for my birthday :D I'm pleased that they have them available on the website now. When I got my previous one, I had it custom made through email since the XL is a bit too small for secure updos :/ I think I'm going to get a smaller one for a half up, but I'm so unsure on what size.

MidnightStar
July 6th, 2012, 07:42 PM
Thanks! Yeah, I was thinking that too, and I also remembered that the flexis have those extra gaps where you can push the pin through further to "tighten" the flexi top (I don't think I'm explaining that very well). I really wanted the moon and stars cosmos which I first saw under the mediums, but they have it under large as well. :) I suppose if worse comes to worse I can always return them for the smaller size, right?

I can't believe that steel rod doesn't jab you in the back of the head all night!

The steel rod sticks out to the side of my head and the length of it lays flat on the back of my head and is held in place by the figure 8 section. It's just like when wearing it during the day. It doesnj't "poke" into the back of my head. It's quite comforrtable. I much prefer it to wearing a Ficcare to bed.

Does anyone use a mini to secure the tail of a braid? If so, how is it with damage? I've been using cut up nylons to secure my braids for a while, cause the goody ouch less elastics were too harsh. I was thinking a mini flexi would be more decorative, and I was wondering who else has done this.

Hi Shona;
What is your pony circumference? I'm thinking more like an XL for buns for you. I have a 3.5" pony circumference, Waist Length, fine to medium textured hair and I need an XL for messy buns and a Mega for CinnaBuns :p. i use mediums for pony holders and I suspect i would use a mini for braid ends. Have fun choosing your pretty Flexis :D

I would say a M, I have a M for most buns but it is too small for a cinnabun so I had to get a large. Maybe it's just poor flexi technique, but I really do need the L for that bun.

p.s. if you do get one and it turns out a bit bit you can always grow into it, can't really do that with a smaller one

Avaya, your buns are so perfect!

July 16th, 2012, 11:41 AM
I have a small size for halfups, they hold well but for for some reason they pinch me and I get hair tangled in them ,maybe I need a different size.Overall it's ok ,am debating on getting a larger size for a full pony to see how it would work. They are lighter in weight than a flexi so if anyone feels the flexis are too heavy ,check these out.A lot of people like them.

Hmmm right now a small Flexi 8 holds a ponytail for me (my ponytail circumference is about 3 inches) at times they can start to slip so I'm not sure if the small is actually too big for me or if they just slip over time or maybe my hair is slippery? But I was thinking about ordering a small O-Ring for my ponytail. I like the look of them but I don't get how they work with the clear beads on the other side?

dulce
July 16th, 2012, 12:23 PM
If your hair slides with a flexi, add an elastic or two on the long pin,it will help prevent slippeage on slippery hair. The o-ring is reverseable ,which is nice so you get 2 choices of looks. It has a tiny clasp at the side where the front and back connect. There is no long pin like a regular flexi.

Oh, and have you guys seen this (http://www.flexi8.com/1084.html?id=NNkcuxVu)? I love the metal + wood combo! Now only if the wood wasn't quite that dark I could actually wear it...

Thanks! I was wondering what it would look like because the colors could end up being so random. I thought for example that the greenish longer shell piece would be more gray but it turned out to be more green which is fine with me, I like both green and gray. So you never know what you might get with this one :)

Yes it is a small. The larger outside beads are like a frosted brown, the second beads in are more of an opaque bluish brown clear color and the last beads in are like a crystal light blue.

I don't know about the discount code. I've only ordered via flexi8.com - and I just recently made an order of five, so I'm not exactly in need of more of them. Unless of course they should make more clips with wooden beads, that would immediately change my situation. :D

Am going to post this in case it can help someone. In past posts on this thread some people have stated they found flexis too heavy.I would twist my now waist fine hair in a bun, and clip with my xl flexi[no elastic] and I found my xl heavy too, it pulled down,so I tried a pony with a soft elastic, twisted it in a bun ,then clipped my xl flexi on,with the pin going behind /through the elastic.Voila! Problem solved for me,it holds, doesn't pull down or feel heavy. So can finally use my xl flexis for a lazywrap bun.

I PM'd hele911 and she told me that what she has is a Have One On Us certificate for new customers only. So if you sign up at her store she'll send you a free clip. Or if you prefer, you can order four clips through her store and e-mail her which style you would like to have for free and she will order it and send it to you.

I don't know any more details. If anyone is planning to make an order and wants to know more I'd think it's best to PM her or Pierre. Both can be found through the Members List above.

She didn't specify so I really don't know for sure. You can send a message to a consultant and ask. The ones that are members here on the forum can be contacted through their profiles. Advertising one's business isn't allowed here so they probably can't explain publicly on this thread how the consulting thing works.

If speculation is allowed though, I would imagine you're a new customer if you've never ordered from Lillarose even if you've ordered from flexi8.com. On the other hand if you've already ordered from Lillarose through another consultant I would imagine they don't count you as a new customer anymore - otherwise people would switch from consultant to another in hopes of the new customer discount. That doesn't sound good business to me. But then again this is just my reasoning.

And the photo doesn't really do them justice! I didn't realise how very pretty these were going to be!

I have the biggest in my Cinnabun fit now and it held for the whole 40 min walk into work. I don't even feel like I'll redo it, although it is not as snug as I usually like. Well, first time! I'm sure practice will make perfect!

Question about the smallies though: since I'm using the large in my Cinnabun I'm really not sure what I'm gonna do with the others (I got a few sizes to take advantage of the offer and try out what works) I almost never do half ups, so I wonder if I can use the smells at all?

Tips? Ideas? Cheese?

There is no record of them even making it to Canada, so it is not Canada Customs fault, which was my first thought. They left the shipping facility in LA but there is no record after that.

The US Postal Service's tracking is not very good. They really don't list every transaction along the way (wasn't that the idea of tracking...?). There can be long periods where you have no idea where something is, and then it arrives on your doorstep. Or they can tell you it has been delivered to you, but it has not. (I am very frustrated with them at the moment.) It was very nice of Lilla Rose to replace the order.

I didn't give them up :) I still love them and can use them, in most of the styles like LWB, where only some hair goes inside. But I can't put a whole bun in them, like a cinnamon bun. Actually, I couldn't even at the beginning, when I got them. And since I plan to grow to classic (years to go...) I thought there's no point in buying another three Ls, since I already have three. I'll go for XLs, to have them for buns that have to be all put inside a Flexi. I only hope they won't be too big. Maybe that's as far as I can go. Considering my thickness I think I won't need the Megas even at classic :D

I was so excited when my very first flexi arrived. I put my hair up in it immediately and fell in love. Much to my dismay it was to be a short lived love affair. Everytime I remove it from my hair, it gets caught and breaks off a piece of my hair!! After the third time and more breakage, I stopped using it. I wish there was a solution because I really loved it. Does this happen to anyone else? I have the celestial stars one.

Yaaaaaaaaay!

(but boo, I can't see your pics!)

Oh, I'm so pleased for you!

Same here, the pictures seem to be broken :( Glad you got your flexis though!

I'm still waiting for my XLs. I made an order this summer but wasn't happy with the XLs so I sent them back for alterations. The XLs are way bigger than smaller sizes (this wasn't really a surprise) which means there's more metal altogether. Now if the beads used are really big it begins to be a little too much for my taste - too shiny, too showy, too bling so to say. So I asked them to keep the centerpieces but change the beads to silver simple beads as in the style 1964.

I think its been more than two weeks since I shipped the clips and I haven't heard anything of them yet. I don't mind if the process is taking its time, I'm only worried they might have been lost in the mail. Perhaps I should contact the company and ask if they've received them.

Can I jump in here? I need some flexi help. I have now from swap one medium flexi and three XS all the same... This style...
http://www.flexi8.com/0983.html?id=JYvffu99
I want to do some kind of elaborate updo, maybe using all. Like the Medium to hold all my hair somehow (maybe at my nape) and then the three little flexis maybe making three tiny mini buns or something or braids somehow. Or maybe something with dutch or french braids (as if I would be able to do that!) My hair is sadly not yet APL (19"). I would just like some ideas from anybody...

Thanks so much!

Does anyone have Roman Stone Lite Sapphire style? I like it in XL because it's quite dark blue. But in other sizes the same name and apparently same style is much lighter. I wonder which photo is accurate. I'm afraid the lighter ones are, since there's more of them. But still, does anyone have any size of Roman Stone Lite Sapphire?

I don't have it, but I just had to comment that I sometimes find the photo accuracy quite challenging. The amethyst beads seem to be different colour too depending on the style. I think that in reality they're the same beads.

Oh. The amethyst one is also something I plan to purchase.
My monitor always shows them as pink, or greyish pink. But hey, amethysts are violet/purple. Hmm.

Yesterday I received my two mini Flexis. :joy: The size was perfect! I wasn't sure if I was going to get mini or XS but finally decided on mini. I only plan to use them for half ups, and I don't use a lot of hair in my half ups, I just take two sections from the sides of the head (as seen in the photo below). I am really glad I decided on the mini size, since my hair is fine and very slippery. I also noticed that I can wear them to keep my front hair out of my face when I have my hair down, which is great. My hair kind of grows "forward" towards my face, so I mostly need some kind of clip or bobby pin to keep it out of my face if I wear it down. A size mini Flexi-8 was perfect for this.

Here are both of the Flexis:

And the Celtic knot one in my usual half up style:

I am super happy with them! More so than I thought I would be. :)

My hair gets stuck on the underside of the center concho. I have the roman cross style. The only way to get my hair out of the concho clasp is to carefully unwind all my hair so it is hanging straight down and then slide the flexi dooooooown to my ends.

Do all the center conchos have the 2 clasps that fold around towards the back of the 8?

Anyone tried fixing the clasps up somehow so they don't snag?

I've never had this problem with any of my Flexis, and my first thought is that if the clasp is catching your hair, then it was incorrectly installed and doesn't curl around the wires far enough to stay out of the way of your hair. I'd suggest getting in touch with Flexi about the issue and arranging for an exchange or repair. Their customer service is excellent, so I'm sure they'll be happy to sort it out for you!

If you do get one, please post a picture!

Perhaps you could e-mail them about the lite Roman stone and ask which photo is accurate? You'd get the information you need and they would get feedback that their photo accuracy is not always at its best.

I'll follow my own advice if I'm planning to buy an amethyst one. I just sent them feedback recently and I'm not planning to do it again soon, otherwise they might think I'm ogling their page all the time, which of course is the truth. :D

I basically stare at the Flexis almost everyday, too! As if it could make them appear in front of me... *sigh*
Thanks a lot for the idea! I never thought about sending them an e-mail... :D Silly me. I will, in a second. Thanks once more!
If it turns out the blue beads are really light, I can always ask for a custom piece with some darker ones. I've seen two styles with darked blue beads, so... But e-mail first! :)

ETA: I've contacted them, and the reply says that the XL clip photo appears darker. So all the remaining ones, the lighter ones, are accurate.
Personally, I'm not happy with the news. But I thought I'd post it, maybe someone will find it useful ;) :flower:

Thank you! Well I am glad to hear this isn't normal. Other than the hair catching I love the flexi. Beautiful and smart design. I wanted to get a mega size... but not if I am going to be snapping hairs left and right. My hair is knee length now. I have baby'd it too long to ruin it with a hairtoy, you know?

So I will contact them and see what they say... maybe I can whack it with a hammer and tighten the concho clasp. The top section is tightly in place, but the bottom piece of the concho that wraps around to the back is like... hmm maybe 1/16th of an inch "out" so there is a hair eating gap goin on there. It just needs to be snugged down...

I use my extra large for a french braid or dutch braid that is folded up. Usually just for a french braid, because I can't have metal touch my scalp directly.

I use my smalls to secure Heidi/fake crown braids.

Those are honestly the only things I use them for.

Oh, I have a mega, too. The only time I use it is to secure a bun.

The only down side to flexis is you need different sizes for different styles,my hair is past waist,I use a mini[just take a little side hair] or a xsmall[take more side hair] for different styles of regular half ups,a small to medium for half up in a bun[depends on amount of hair taken from sides] ,a small for pony, a xsmall for french /english braid end, a xlarge for french twist and buns, a medium for peacock twist .Check out utube for more flexi styles.

Hmm. Bunzfan's post prompted me to give my own XL Flexi another try. Last time I tried it on it looked OK, but felt uncomfortably loose. Today it has a nice firm hold in my cinnabun. I'm really pleased, because this must mean that the thickness *is* travelling down the length even though it doesn't feel as though it's doing so!

*sigh*
I mailed Flexi about the Lite Sapphire (http://www.flexi8.com/0316.html?id=IeZJMGQ7) one. A lady responded that the photo of XL is too dark and the ones for other sizes (http://www.flexi8.com/2089.html?id=IeZJMGQ7) are accurate. Which is really light blue. I've mention this.
So I asked if I could have the beads and the centerpiece done in royal blue beads, as in the style with Hawaii flower (http://www.flexi8.com/0687.html?id=IeZJMGQ7) in the center.
The beads will work (that one I knew) but not the centerpiece. *siiiigh* I don't think that a light centre bead will look good with much darker side beads. And I like it, I like the Roman Stone thing so I wouldn't like it to be changed to a non-beaded centre, although that would be universal and matching.

I guess I'll go for the original style, although it's so light. Maybe next time I'll do a custom order for the royal blue... But I'm rather disappointed :(

I have to share this!

I can not do a French twist at all. I follow all the instructions and it just doesn't work for me and I've been disappointed by this as it just looks so darned classy and sophisticated. Also, because that is one of the ways I hopes to use my medium flexis, which havent had many outings since I got them.

So this morning I suddenly thought "I wonder if I did all the steps to the upside down nautilus bus, except the last one, and then clipped up the loop at the top, would at look like a French twist?" (saw the tutorial link in another thread, maybe hair toy addicts, I'll check)

And it does!

Better yet, these photos below are the same bun I did this morning and I have since walked forty minutes to work, briskly, in the wind. (that's why they're a bit messy, but hey, it holds!)

Woohoo, RubySlippers!

Re medium Flexis, I discovered yesterday that I can actually use them in my cinnabun. This floored me because I'd never have thought they'd be big enough, but it's all down to how I place them. I can now use a grand total of three sizes to hold a cinnabun -- medium, large, and XL. The medium and large make it look like a centre-held bun, while the XL currently acts pretty much like a buncage, but they all work and they all hold! Who'd have thought?

Henrietta, I wish I could shop for them whenever I wanted, but the street fair is only once a year. It really was amazing to see so many in one place. There were hundreds of them. And they were mostly different from the ones available online (either at flexi8.com or at Lilla Rose). The centerpieces and beads were the usual ones, but in all different combinations, such as a silver heart centerpiece with green beads instead of silver beads, or a butterfly centerpiece with hematite beads.

The other nice thing is that you can try them on and see how they fit and how they look in your hair.

sorry about the bad pic and hair style im still learning, i will make more of an effort when i post the pic of my smaller half up one

Ooooh, so pretty. Which style is it? I don't remember seeing it.
But, after all, I stare only at Ls and XLs :D

Speaking of which, I know exactly which 3 XLs I want for my next purchase, next week. And I have all the details about my custom order confirmed, after a few days of exchanging mails. I think Flexi8 is the most customer-friendly company I know! :inlove:

it was called
Simple Danglie with stone-set and clear crystal beads
but its a small so probably not suited to most on this board
flexi8 do have great customer service and fast shipping, less then a week to get to me all the way in Australia

I'm wearing my XL flexi today it seems head eating to me but i'm assured it doesn't , maybe if it wasn't a dangly one it wouldn't look so big.

I got a medium flexi a few weeks ago and I love it! I am having problems with it catching strands of hair between the beads, though... Does this mean I have to size up? It kind of feels like I'm stuffing my hair into the flexi.
It looks great though!

Thanks! I should have waited til someone was here to help me get a better pic. My hair is due for a washing too, so it was really oily. Since it was a smaller flexi I put just the upper part of my hair in a bun and used it that way for the pic. I just love flexi8's, I hope in time to buy several more to help my lil collection come along. :)

chou, there are 3 notches on the pin of the flexi, and it looks like you are using the middle one. Try using the one closest to the end of the pin and see if it is less tight. My hair can also get caught if I make it too tight (too much hair or flexi too small).

Thank you for the tip! I will try that. I was worried it wouldn't be secure enough if I only clicked it once, but I really should try it out to see if I get less snagging.

According to a friend, she had recently acquired a flexi-8 from an fair near Grand Haven, Michigan.
(Also spotted a Flexi in my school. Possibly bought from yet another fair.)

Maybe you could ask them to make one without silver tones? I'm going to ask if they can reverse the direction the pin faces, so I can insert it from the left side instead of the right.

I did ask. Sadly, the centre's only available in silver. They said to ask again in six months "to see what we decided" about stocking it in other colours. :S

I think that that one is now a regular, "Festive Fallen Leaf", or some such?

Are you picking on my spelling mistake? If so, not cool.

If you're not then what I was trying to say, is that if the Flexi people made that one a regular when they saw how popular it was, maybe there's hope there will be more owls?

I was definitely not picking on any spelling mistake. If you took it like that, I'm sorry about it. :flower:
My meaning was definitely that since that design proved to be so popular, with that first shipment getting sold out in mere hours, they must have decided that it would be a good addition to their regular Flexis. :)

Eh, no worries. I can read into things too much, sometimes :flower:

We had the same basic idea...they added it eventually. Maybe the same with the Owl...although I think the March 2012 Flexi sold out in about 3 days also, and they never got any more in...

Theobroma
October 4th, 2012, 07:44 AM
Email them about it! I already asked whether the owl was available in anything-but-silver, and they said to ask again in six months to find out what they decided to do. If more people pester them about it, that may sway their decision!

My flexi's just can't seem to out-do the forks in the 'most used' awards, i'm still glad I got them though :) I use my medium and large every so often, my mother has stolen my XS and I ended up getting her another XS and a Mini - she uses them almost exclusively now, an XS is the right size for her bun! I definitly got the fine/thin hair from her, luckily not to she same extent.

I am trying to get away from using elastics to put my hair up. The flexi-8 seems like a great alternative! I wish I could find pictures of the owl one to see what everyone's talking about. I love owls, I might wait till that's back in stock before I order one. Otherwise I'll probably get something in a basic silver tone.

Owl Flexi still not in stock... a follow up email has assured me they will be in stock today or tomorrow (so probably tomorrow, the 19th). Meanwhile, Flexi's have all gone on sale from now until Sunday. :D So if they are, in fact, made available tomorrow, we all luck out and get our owls for 10% off.

Not that I expect anyone to see this post in time, if it even WILL post, due to constant server too busy messages.

I ordered my October Owl flexi's on Friday, and I got them on Monday. :) I looked at the site today, and it looks like they are either out or back-ordered yet again. It's a little confusing because the "add to cart" button is overlaid atop the out of stock script.

Ah well. I hope you ladies were able to get yours.
