Default Side combs for thick hair?

I've been using cheap side combs to hold back my hair in its grow out stage and I really like them but my hair is so thick, I have to section it in thirds just to get it off my face. Even then, if I'm not careful and get too much hair, I can't get the combs in. The teeth are too close together, I just can't wedge them in.

I'm looking for some that might have teeth a bit further apart but still hold well.

My hair is super thick and I have been impressed with how well those side combs work. Are you putting them in U-shape up, then flipping them over and pushing forward?

I'm able to get essentially a half-up held in place all day with two combs.
    Onwards.

Yep, thats how I'm using them. How bjg are the ones you use? Mine are 3 inches and just aren't enough.
I found some 4 inch on amazon I might get but I was hoping someone might have recommendations for higher quality ones.

I have never been able to use side combs, they slid out whatever I did (I used them in the 80s, tried to, anyway). Maybe use a small lock of hair and fasten it almost by itself (that's how it ended up working for me), but that's tougher to do with short hair!

They stay in really well once I get them shoved into place but its painful. I used to wear them as a teen but I did more like you, took a smaller section and pulled it back to hold the rest in place. Right now I want all my hair pinned back, bangs and all.
