I think I am going to try this for a month. Mainly because I am the queen of wearing my hair anyway but up! I love how long my hair is getting but I'm used to to it and it would be nice to wear it up every day for a month, then be "surprised" when I finally wear it down.
I'll start tomorrow!!

Angelthadiva and Patrycja, tanks for welcoming me to the challenge!

I'm going to do it at for at least thirty days. I'd like to go for a year, but want the opportunity to re-evaluate how I feel about it. So my plan is thirty days, then if I still like doing it, 100 days, expanded to a year if I really enjoy it.

Day 194: Gonna be a very long day. Came in early for more NOC training and get to stay late for even more. Then I have to go get my alignment and exhaust fixed.... Yep.. Long day. Hair's in a cinnabun with the emerald ficcare again... 'cause I was in a hurry. Again.

Days 65 - 70: Cinnabun with Quattro Starlites fork.

Day 71: Cinnabun with Ketyllo AquaPearl sticks.

...My, I have been creative. My hair is really dry and (I think) suffering from the effects of accidental over-proteining. The ends also REALLY need to be trimmed (it's happening this Friday). I'm trying to mess with it as little as possible, hence the lack of even trying for variety.

And I'm sorry for not posting more often... there has been a bit of work drama and I just haven't felt like dealing with people much.

:o I started this way back before the boards went down, then I fell off the wagon! I lost count and gave up. But, now I am trying so hard not to trim for another year and it is going to be a big challenge.

So, I am back on board! Day 1!!!:cheese: of my wear hair up for a year challenge!

I have been putting my hair up often without keeping track. Notice the scrunchie on my wrist in my avatar?:)

morning folks! so i showered and did WO this morning but no matter what my hair takes hours to dry. how long do you normally leave it down after you shower before you put it back up? thanks in advance.

I put my in a towel for a while and just potter about putting things away and such, then put my leave-in in and then bun it. It about halves the drying time if I take it down from time to time and comb it quickly.

---------------------------------

The challenge I'm doing is slightly different from the standard 'wear hair up' one, but y'all are friendly folks, so I'm hoping you'll accept my slightly off-the-wall version. For pretty much all of my life up until joining LHC, I wore my hair in a ponytail. It's still probably the most convenient and easiest to do style for me, but I'd love to break away from it, so I set myself the challenge of not wearing one the whole time I'm off for the summer from school. I don't wear my hair down, but if I did, that would be okay within the rules of my challenge. Exercise and sleeping don't count either.

Today is day 20 of 46, and I'm wearing the 10sec quick bun with two plain black plastic hairsticks (my avatar picture).

Ok so I did this for a month with great results. Splits were down like crazy and hair felt much better in general. then I stopped protecting my ends and OMG. Mega splits and some look to be an inch or 2 long!
So today as I am getting over the flu I will take a while to pamper myself and get rid of the splits. After that I will give my fiance his last look at my hair down until our wedding night. :-)

I'm here for as long as I can handle it. I kinda get withdrawls if I don't wear my hair down once in awhile...

Do ends have to be tucked in to be considered an updo? Do braids and ponytails count?

tiny_teesha
August 15th, 2008, 01:55 AM
I say pony tails and braids definately count, not half ups, the hair has to be entirly contained (not bangs though) so like a pony tail contains all the hair, not the ends, but that is the gist, ofcourse you can make up your own rules and have a day off once a month, or once a whatever.
The initial rules were also no looking in the mirror for length progress.
Ofcourse buns are more protective then pony tails so what ever you decide really :)

Soufoulee, welcome to the challenge! Ponytails and braids count if you want them to count :) For me, the whole point is to protect the length and ends, so having my ends tucked in is important to me. But it's your challengs, so you make the rules. :)

Thanks for the clarification you two! Here are my rules:

1. Okay, well I'm going to have braids and ponytails count, though I rarely wear my hair in ponytails. IF I wear braids, I'll try to loop up the bottoms so that the ends are protected.

2. I'll try to oil the ends as much as possible.

3. I'll try to keep the ends tucked in as much as possible.

3. I'll try not to look in the mirror, or look at my hair in the shower to gauge growth.

4. I'll be allowed to wear it down once every 2 weeks, but try not to wear it down at all.

5. After a month I'll reassess my hair situation and decide if I liked the results and if I'd like to pursue it further! :D:D

I think it sounds like a solid plan, right?

Well, my day one was a low messy bun.

How do most of you feel about hair clips? Like claw clips...??

Well, the days that should have been day 14 and 15 - I wore my hair in two braids due to migraine and tender scalp. Still up, as in all hair contained, but as I don't count braids hanging down in my protective updo-challenge, I'm going to do the last two days this weekend instead.

I think I'm going to start my challenge up again. This time, I'm going from Sunday (tomorrow is my birthday, and it'll be the last day I can wear my hair down...well, almost) until September 25, the day before fall quarter classes start. If I'm counting right, that should be an even forty days. After that, I may set a new end date, but this is the time period for now.

My rules are: it has to be up off my back, though some of it hanging on my neck is acceptable. So a braid counts as "down" but my barrette with snood attached is "up". I'm allowed to leave it down to begin to dry after I wash it, and I have one allowed down day every two weeks (well, evidently that's 2.85, so I'll say I have three over the forty days).

It would sure be nice if I could get myself to learn some new updos and uses for scarves, but I forsee a lot of infinity buns and rope braids stuck up with a pencil in my future...

Day 14: Pinless braided bun
Day 15: Soft Nautilus bun - the ends still don't stay in the bun very well, but I have just had a calm day at home so it doesn't matter...

I have now completed the 15 days of protective updos, and this have been very good for my poor ends - for the first time for months they actually feel moistured. But, they continue to break, although slower, and it seems like I have to do some S&D at least every second week anyway. I was thinking about extending the challenge, but as I have had some issues with tender scalp and headaches and don't want to count braids hanging down, I think I'll leave the challenge for now. The tenderness is not necessary caused by tension from the updos - it could very well be other reasons, but just in case, I think wearing braids perhaps two days a week would be a good compromise to make both ends and scalp happy. And as my riding lessons starts again it would be at least one braid day every week anyway only because of that.

If only my hair had been long enough for decent Heidi braids (crossed behind the nape-version) or even a fake crown braid, this would have made a protective updo-challenge much easier, as those styles are very different from buns when it's about pressure/tension on the scalp. *wanders off to grow her hair*

Day 11 Messy Scrunchie Bun

I have been trying to wear my hair up every day and I do but it does not stay up all day. For now I am just getting used to wearing it up at all. So that is my chalenge I am not going to be so strick about the style or amount of time but, I will put it up every day! My hair is thin and breaks easily so I need to figure out how much is too much up and what do's cause breakage for me. Too tight is bad and too much twisting too. So mainly my little scrunchies work great because they are gentle. I will post every now and then with my updates!

Then Day 5 was up in the easy bun cover with the clips, and today, Day 6, I put it in the bun cover to work out, and now it's up with some new hairsticks I bought with pretty blue glass toppers! Hi everyone ! :waving:

It has been forever since I posted on this thread or LHC, life just got waaaay too crazy busy this summer. However, I have been faithfully wearing my hair up the whole time since Jan 1. Now I've noticed something that has me more than a little worried. The hair at my temples is looking really thin and actually receding:blueeek:!! It has been a little thinner there for a long time, but nothing like this. Even DH notices the difference at the sides of my bangs. I'm wondering if wearing my hair up all the time is pulling on it and making things worse. I always try to make sure the front edge is loose and have a very sensitive scalp and nothing feels like it is pulling......... Anyone else who has been wearing their hair up for a while notice this happening to you?? Any suggestions??

Thanks NurseMama. I'm also thinking it is from the tension from the updos, at least I hope it is!! I've searched around on the this board and this seems to be closest to traction hairloss, not hormonal. I have gotten used to wearing my hair up and was aiming for one year of updos but I think I really need to let it down now and see if the temples fill back in. Bummer, cause I think keeping my hair up has really helped with the condition and length of the rest of my hair. Also, I'm going to redo my style of bangs and let the temple part grow out into framing layers to see if it helps it to look thicker. Soooo, it looks like I'm at the wait and see if it is better in nine months or so, after all it took nine months of updos to thin so another nine to fix it???

I've been away, so here's my holiday repertoire:

31 - French braid into a ponytail
32 - scrunchie bun
33 - scrunchie bun. This was wash day and it stayed in a beebutt.
34 - left the beebutt in overnight and kept it in on this day
35 - figure 8
36 - scrunchie bun
37 - figure 8
38 - scrunchie bun
39 - scrunchie bun AGAIN! Today's wash day again. I promise I'll be more inventive tomorrow!

Most days I braided my hair in the evening, but it was too hot for that during the day (I went to Italy). It was a complete mess when I got back - I went swimming in the lake a lot and sweated like a pig during the day and basically abandoned it. It's so nice to have it clean now! I even managed to find a hairtoy shop and bought some forks (my first ever!) and a new stick!

I moved to the capital city approx 2 weeks ago to go to the uni, and decided I'll wear my hair up at least until it reaches tailbone. Considering it's about 2-3 inches from it, it'll take at least 3 months, maybe more. We'll see if I can cope, I like wearing my hair up but I really like to flaunt it every now and then, too :p I started uni last Monday and so far so good, haven't let a single pair of eyes (except for my flatmates) see it down yet.

Accomplished the self challenge of up at all times (not even a braid or ponytail)/at home or outdoors/day and night. So the month of August went. I just comb out in the morning or every other morning. Topknot with soft yarn bun cover, snood thingy for sleeptime. Upon rising a Clair's plastic hairstick. After bath and comb out I choose a fork or sticks for the workaday. That's it. Month flew by and tangle free is great. Goal is to protect the August 1st O8 trim of ends and no trim until midSummer O9.
August- Done.

Wow, it seems I started this challenge a while ago.. :)

After getting a bad hair cut over a year ago, I started pulling my hair back to hide it. The convienience of not styling my hair was addictive, and I started keeping it in a bun or ponytail daily.

I'm pretty sure I broke one year by now. :D

Today is day 40! :D:D My specific challenge is no ponytails, and I'm shocked that I've kept to it (though I haven't had it down either). Admittedly, I have worn a pony a couple of times, but only when lying down and reading, and I've decided that's okay.

Today's style is a French braid. Only one more week left!

Hello again. I have decided to join in again for another 6 months. However, this time I will not look at my hair down in the mirror for 6 months as well. By that time I should be at classic. Please do not expect posts from me very often, but be assured that my hair is either in a bee-end bun or in a braid. If it varies too much from that, I will do my best to post about it.

Just a minute ago I discovered the Gibraltar bun as my - probably - new everyday bun (instead of the cinnabun)!
The Gibraltar bun holds with only one stick and nothing else and I'm soooo happy about that! :)
Currently, I am on day 276 of my year challenge.

day 127 of 150 I won't deny it- I went half the day with...my hair down!!! For the first time in 126 1/2 days! I've gone a hour or so but never more than that. This time, I went to Walmart,Gamestop, and Whole Life Foods with my hair down. It was so great and I haven't really realised how long it has actually gotten. It's a good 3 inches below my bra strap now :happydance: :cheer: I got home and put it up,though. Right now,its in a ponytail.I'm waiting for my first ever henna mix to release the dye.The more I think about it, I'm thinking I'm going to apply the henna tomorrow all day.

I'm just joining this challenge! I generally wear my hair up anyway since I hate it so much (after my hairdresser hacked off over 8 inches in February), but I'm hoping that if I wear it up for the next few months consistently that when I take it down I will be shocked by its growth!

Monsterkitti
September 7th, 2008, 02:59 PM
Right I think it might be time to try one of these challenges. Will start with a month from tomorrow and see how it goes.

I only usualy wear my hair down at the weekends anyway but it does get quite a lot of wear and tear with being outside and getting played with a lot by me whilst it is :)

I also only ever really wear it in a messy bun to work 5 days a week so learning a few new looks might be good.

Wow! Page 200! I'm sitting with an SMT on right now, and after I've rinsed I'm planning to braid in 3 French braids for great braid waves tomorrow. So, if I have soft, killer waves tomorrow, they're being worn down.

I've been keeping my hair up almost every day for a bit now. I've been trying out new styles a lot, trying to get away from just the two braids I wore for most of last year.
I fantasize about letting my hair down for a fancy occasion (prom or graduation) and stunning those who haven't seen my hair loose. :D

I did finish my 58 days challenge, YAY :D

It's four months since my last trim and my hair's still in good condition. I can hardly find a single split when doing S&D and I'm sure wearing my hair up has protected it a lot. And it has grown two inches during the summer!
I love wearing my hair down though, so I'm not starting another challenge right now. :)
