I'm going to try a short challenge to practice some new buns and get comfortable with them. For one week I'll wear my hair in a different bun every day just to see what styles I like. If I hate it I can revert to a previous style but I'll try to give each one a full half hour test.

Day 1: Celtic knot bun - worn for 2 hours so far, super comfortable even when exercising

36. Messy bun with large circle barette/hairpin.
37. Disc bun with 60th street hairstick.
38. Side braid ending in a braided bun, secured with tiny claw clips.

Quite happy with how long my side braid is now. The leftover braid actually makes a decent bun and looks very fancy compared to the amount of effort and time that the whole hairstyle takes. When I had close to BSL hair, a side braid with the braid over shoulder was one of my favourite styles. I'll be so happy when my hair is long enough to wear it like that again! :D

I wore my hair down for one day... and the rest of the days I tied it in a ponytail. My hair is too short so it always slips out of the bun and I'm trying to neglect it as much as I can. Today, though, I managed to do a Dutch braid. I cannot wait for my hair to be a bit longer so it will stop getting out of updos.

I’ve been wearing my hair down a bit while I’m at home because I keep getting migraines. I decided to start wearing it up more, starting from today, and I promptly got another migraine!

I sectioned off the front bits, made a bun and wound each front section around loosely, so it looked like a normal bun but not quite so pulled back. I was interested to see whether that would work even with a migraine, but my daughter pulled my hair fork out, took it upstairs and put it on the dressing table, and came back and stroked my hair. That was the end of today’s hair up challenge!

I’m being strict about wearing my hair up again, but my Quattro fork keeps sliding out! I’m scared I’m going to lose it so I’ve switched to mini claw clips.

It feels like a step backwards, I used claw clips before I used sticks and forks, but as long as my hair is up and out of the way it’s all good. They’re more comfortable than I remember (last time I tried I’d just had a head injury so that could be why!)

day 23 already, I can't believe it!

My favorite way to wear my hair up is the LWB, which I learned here. I am so grateful because it doesn't hurt my roots like other buns.

I have a pear shaped face, I like to wear my buns on the top of my head to add some visual height. Wearing a low bun can look pretty severe, though my bangs help.

Does anyone else here have a pear shaped face? What up-doo's do you prefer?

My hair is finally long enough to wear up and I am determined to have the healthiest best ends that I can this time around of growing. So, I have been wearing my hair up every day for the past few days. I just discovered the low sock bun(Thanks to a LHC member here) and I have been wearing those the past couple days. I am going to do a 30 day hair up challenge for myself possibly excluding Christmas Eve, if I want to wear my hair down to feel fancy.

Yay I completed the challenge I set for myself back in October! :cheer:

Back then I was so fed up with my hair and very tempted to get a trim, just to get rid of my annoying layers. My goal was to wear it up until the end of 2020 with 3 cheat days if I really, really wanted to wear it down. I used only two of them, so that's pretty good :).

Last days:
72. Side braid.
73. Disc bun with 60th street hairfork
74. Very loose twisted bun with a lot of small clips (headache, so needed something light and airy).
75. Milkmaid braids & Disc bun when my layers had jumped all out of their braids.
76. Disc bun with 60th street hairfork.
77. Disc bun with gold+silver hairfork.

I trimmed only a tiny bit from my ends today instead of chopping all of them at once, so that's a big win. My braiding and bunning skills have improved a lot and I learned quite a number of new styles. Even though I didn't necessarily set a goal to learn new up-do's.

So far I'm still enjoying wearing my hair up, so I think my next challenge will be to wear my hair up for the next 3 months (starting today), with one cheatday every month. A whole year sounds too intimidating. As long as I am enjoying myself, I'll just keep adding increments of 3 months. Ponytails are counted as an up-do for me, my hair isn't long enough that I wear them regularly or for full-days (headaches), same for braids.

Happy to hear that it's inspiring! That honestly makes my day :).

The challenges do work really well! I'm still growing out a lot of damage and layers, so wearing it up helps me to forget about those. The biggest reason to grow my hair out is that I always loved to make intricate updo's and braids. So every time I manage to do a new hairstyle, it motivates to take care of my hair :).

Yea they definitely help! I aimed for 30 days-ish and ended up doing over 70 I think. I’m finding it harder in the winter though. I always wear my hair up when I go out but I don’t always want to wear it up when I’m at home.

It’s great that you’re doing so many styles. Do you share them with the relevant length thread? I’m sure they will inspire people to try something new.

Haha, that's more or less what happened to me as well. I did one in august and pretty much kept wearing it up. My hair gets very staticky in winter, so for me it's the opposite. But it's nice to have it down sometimes! If my hair wouldn't become a giant floofball, I would probably wear it down around the home as well.

Oh that would be a great idea :). I think I even took pictures from some of them. Let's see if I can revive the updo's for shorter hair thread.

I completely forget to include my update, so it's an extra long one this time:
9. Cinnabun with small claw clips.
10. Knot bun with 60th street hairfork.
11. Disc bun with spiral hairstick.
12. Cheat day for this month - 1/2 of day down, 1/2 of day in clipped up English braid.

Except when drying or onstage (sometimes - and not at all 2020! *sob*) it's always up, usually in a bun, or I do a plait, fold it a few times and put on a double comb with stretchy and beads (I don't know what to call them)
At the moment I French braided from my fringe and then put the plait in a bun, held with 3 large plastic pins.

So so happy with them. Was really worried they would be far too large for me. On the forum I see them mainly used by people with BSL+ lengths, my hair is only approaching APL. But they work incredibly well and even the large isn't that big at all for my buns.

I must get one! Is there a particular type that holds better or are they all the same deal?

I didn't realize how expensive they were until I pulled up ficcare's website. I don't think I've ever paid that much for a hair accessory in my life. They're beautiful though. They are awfully expensive unfortunately, but so far very much worth it. I had never spend that much on a hairtoy either. I saved up for one for quite some time (and my boyfriend got me one for christmas, so I could order them together and save on shipping). I have two maxima's, those seem to be the best at containing a lot of hair. But everyone is different of course. Ficcare has a 20% off sale regularly, so if you plan on getting one I would definitely wait for the sale. The Ficcare thread has lots of pictures of the different sizes, that may help. I have a medium and a large, and my hair is quite a bit shorter than yours. So I would go for one of those sizes.

Hi, I'm taking a short break from the challenge since I'm feeling the need to wear my hair down for a while.
I think I'm going to join again later on in february!

In any case, though it seems unbelievable for my curly head, I managed to wear my hair up for 92 days:agape:

The challenge helped me a lot in avoiding the knots and I will continue anyway to weave braids /buns especially before going to sleep and doing housework

Have fun everyone, see you soon! :D

good look!!

Ouch! That sounds like quite a bruise. I hope it heals soon.

Your hairstyle list just gave me an idea for how to wear my hair today. I’ve got a migraine so I wanted something that doesn’t pull. I’ve plaited it and put it up wjth a couple of mini claw clips. I don’t know what it looks like from the back yet but it feels comfortable enough.

I want to accept this challenge! I want to build up my style repertoire, and I've been starting to loathe my hair lately. It's damaged and at a weird length, so I want to oil it, baby it, and then forget about it the rest of the time.

So lets start with today, day one: ponytail with two scrunchies, a small one for hold under a large one with a pretty pattern on it.

I'll start with a week challenge, then I'll see if I can go a whole month.

Day 2: Cinnabun held with a scrunchie and claw clip
Day 3: Chignon at the nape of my neck
Day 4: ponytail with scrunchie. I put a drop of grapeseed oil on my ends for some extra protection.
Day 5: Top knot
Day 6: Dutch braid
Day 7: peacock twist with claw clip
Day 8: messy-ish bun. I sort of just pulled half a loop of hair through a scrunchie twice, then tucked the ends under so they weren't so, well, messy...
Day 9: Double Dutch braids with a headband
Day 10: ponytail with scrunchie
Day 11: braided bun with a ficcare (yes, I bought one! I do like it , but I got a very plain color and now I want another, prettier one)
Day 12: chignon
Days 13: top knot
Day 14: single English braid (we'll see if I keep it that way, I always feel like when I post that I did an English braid in the morning I wind up hating the way it looks and changing it later on)

Edit: two weeks in, yay!! I think I'll make a new post tomorrow and edit that one for another two weeks, if I continue changing up the style every day (:

It's slowly getting better fortunately. I really miss playing around with updo's, feels like my hair is constantly the same. But on the bright side, it's finally long enough that it doesn't need to be redone every couple of hours :)

Glad that it's a comfortable style for you! It's my go-to for headaches as well. I wear it a lot around the house too, super easy and very comfortable.

I am almost finished my month long challenge although I may repeat it later in the year. My hair is not yet armpit length so I have really only done it to try and see a bigger difference in length. I think I will. I am done on the 5th and I am really looking forward to being able to wear it down again.

I hope your injury is continuing to heal NicoleLionne.

I challenged myself to wear my hair up for about 5 weeks, until my birthday, and it’s just occurred to me that my birthday has passed and I’m still automatically wearing my hair up :)

I have a new ReDoodle stick, which arrived just in time for my birthday, so that encourages me to carry on with updos! I’ll aim for the end of March now, I guess?

For the last 2 months, I kept my hair in a braid. This isn't my hair being "up", but it kept me from messing with my ends. My hair growth was more noticeable because I wasn't length-checking every couple of hours, instead, my length check-ins were more spaced out and I saw real progress :p
What's the phrase? A watched pot never boils?

Teach us please! I haven't been able to do a crown braid without hoards of bobby pins.

My hair is long enough and fine enough that my plait will wrap the whole way round my head (twice now, but it worked before then), so you might need to adapt it if your plait doesn't go all the way round.
If it does, then the process is:
Plait hair
Wrap plait around head
Use spin pin to attach the plait to the base of the plait at the nape of the neck, to hold it in place
Get a darning needle (so it is blunt) and a ribbon
Starting at the nape, "sew" the ribbon around the plait, attaching the plait to the scalp hair
Tie the ribbon ends to each other.

Does that make any sense?

Looks like this once finished:

I love crown braids. I began to make them when I was around thigh length, although it was more like my avatar picture then.

What of crown braids? Once you get good at French or Dutch braids going around your head it’s not too difficult and you don’t need the extra length for that...

Well I started this challenged close to a month ago now I think. I only managed to wear my hair up every day in buns/braids/ponytails for 2 weeks, but even though it was only for a short period, wearing my hair up more often than down now feels a lot more comfortable to me
So thank you challenge :)

I'm wrapping up this challenge, but will still continue to wear my hair up during the week when I'm constantly moving around and rubbing my hair up on phone cords and office chairs. I just want the option to wear it down on weekends, but this challenge has really helped me figure out what updos work well with my current length.

Didn't need my monthly cheatday in February, but wanted to wear a half-up for my boyfriends birthday. I really much prefer to wear it up at the moment. When I see my box-dye damaged ends, I immediately start obsessing about the white dots (even though there aren't nearly as many as a year ago).
