Second week!

This is when I decided to take my one day off because my second day curls looked good. :) I don't remember how I wore my hair on the refresh day before washing it (refresh for me means getting all hair thoroughly damp, otherwise it doesn't work), maybe a low ponytail..?

08/09: half-pulled through ponytail // wash day
09/09: small french braid into a cinnabun with a hairstick
10/09: half-up english braid and a low ponytail
11/09: refresh day
12/09: a day off, worn loose
13/09: rosebun from 3 rope braids // Katniss braid
14/09: cinnabun with a new metal fork!

Halfway! Maybe I'll make it a two month challenge, I'm still really enjoying all the new hairstyles.

11. High cinnabun-inspired bun secured with a scrunchie.
12. English braid rolled into a bun secured with a hairfork
13. Messy 2-strand cinnabun with hairfork
14. Slightly tweaked lazy wrap bun, held up by a circle pin and hairstick.
15. Gibson tuck

On washdays I let my hair dry first as well. Only if I go out, I put it into a loose bun if it's still damp. Once it's in a bun or braid, it doesn't dry any further, which makes my scalp very unhappy.

Okay! I'm calling today my first day. As for a goal, I'd like to keep it up daily from now through 2022.
I just cause so much damage playing with it when its down, fussing about the ends needing this or that...no more!
I can't promise I'm going to be good about putting it in styles...some days may just be tuck-ends-in-and-octopus-clip-it days...but I do want to learn more buns and actually get good at braiding!
It's hard to do cool buns at just BSL with iii hair, for me.

That's a big commitment, good luck! :) I feel you on buns and thick hair, mine is just a bit above average thickness I think, but the options feel so limiting.

That's an impressive goal! Good luck! As your hair gets longer, you'll be able to do more styles with it. There are also some styles that work great withyour length, like the tucked French braid. I tried that with my hair thinking I'd get a nice loop, but...it didn't look so nice. Haha.

Imho they are much easier to do on yourself than, say, a french braid. :) (Unless you want to do a french fishtail braid, ah!) Considering the intricate hairstyles you already do, I bet it'd take a few tries tops and it'll look great!

Don’t worry, you’ll be able to rejoin very soon!

Headbands or scarves might help to keep the hair off your face while it’s growing out, or mini claw clips. It’s great when it gets long enough to tuck behind your ears too.

Happy growing, and do whatever you need to keep comfortable and enjoy the process while you’re growing :)

Nothing special, but at least I did wear it up and managed to use a lot of different hairtoys :).

16.09 English braid rolled into a low bun secured with a metal hairfork
17.09 Braided bun with my Sodawood hairstick.
18.09 High, loose bun with circle hairpin and stick
19.09 2 English braids
20.09 English braid rolled into a low bun secured with a wooden hairfork

Made it through my first week. Whew! Weird week with about 900 miles of driving & riding in the car, plus my birthday, plus my anniversary. Too much stuff!
Kept it simple with protective center-held buns and a satin pillowcase slipped over the back of my bucket seat. Hoping to feel a little more creative this week without the time crunch of running around everywhere.
Today, day 8, I am wearing a french braid with the ends tucked under. Going to make this the week of braids, I think! I desperately need to practice them...

Day 30: Milady's bun. I made it through my challenge of 30 styles in 30 days. Hooray! I'll post a list of all the ones I did and share pictures soon. It was fun, and I learned some things along the way. YMMV 1) my hair is way too slippery right after a wash for some styles. 2) u-shaped pins are amazing. 3) braiding my hair when wet means never drying and crunchy texture. 4) hanging braids are definitely not a protective style for me.

NicoleLionne
September 30th, 2020, 07:01 AM
Yay 30 days completed!! :D

Congratulations BexLocks, you did an amazing job with all those different hairstyles! You really kept me motivated to experiment with new hairstyles during the last week. Looking forward to the full list :)

26. (Dutch) Side braid, starts behind right ear and falls over left shoulder
27. French braid with ends tucked under, secured with curved hairfork
28. Space buns: 2 braided buns - They have never looked so good!
29. Gibson Tuck/Braid combination
30. Lazy wrap bun with metal hairfork

I've learned so much about my hair! (This is just about my hair and scalp, YMMV) 1st and 2nd day hair are the best to practise new hairstyles. Day 1 is very slippery so braided styles work better than wrapped styles. Day 3 (and 4) hair is tricky, my scalp gets sensitive and doesn't like being manipulated to much and hates pretty much all hair elastics, bobby pins and u-pins and only tolerates claw clips, soft scrunchies and hairsticks/forks. Gibson Tucks make my scalp really unhappy, I won't try those again until I have more length and I can find a way that doesn't require elastics. My hair is also finally long enough for braids and both my hair and my scalp love those :D

I will definitely do a new challenge in a couple of months, so happy that I learned 7 new hairstyles that I will keep using:cheer:

Made it through week 2! I've not been very creative, mostly disc buns. Still struggling with braiding, it's maddening to be a spinner, weaver, and knitter and yet be so lousy at a simple braid! I want to do more braided updos but whew...we'll see.
Just happy to be plugging a long with keeping it in an updo every day. Good 'nuff.

BexLocks & NicoleLionne, congratulations!! :) I really enjoyed doing this month's challenge alongside you.

25/09: cinnabun with metal hair fork || disc bun with metal hair fork || tried a ropebraid cinnabun half-up
26/09: disc bun with a pony base and a wooden hair stick
27/09: cinnabun (nothing was working today)
28/09: half-pulled through ponytail || claw clip
29/09: low ponytail
30/09: two ropebraids stacked on top of each other (inspired by #2 here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puzgpBoesss))

Good 'nuff.
Well done making it through two weeks! I understand your frustration with braids as a spinner, weaver, and knitter (me too!). Braids are tricky to do on oneself - behind and mostly by feel. The other stuff I do a lot by feel, but rely on being able to see what I'm doing, lol! I'll bet you'd be great at doing braids on somebody else's head.

Congrats, Bonsai on your 6 weeks!

Wow BexLocks, that's a very impressive list! So many stunning (and complicated) styles :D. I saved all of them, I want to attempt them as well when my hair is long enough. And it is a great way to motivate myself to take extra good care of my hair.

And BexLocks and ynnecongratulations on completing your challenges! It was so much fun to do this with you!

Well done on six weeks Bonsai, that's awesome!

Good luck everyone who is doing a wear-up challenge right now! :cheer:

6 weeks, when I had my hair up all time - day and night... Only in Saturdays (wash day ;) ) I had few hours off, when my hair was drying.

When my hair grow up a little I try "30 days with 30 buns". In this moment only one bun catch it properly.

What a great idea to take pictures of your up-do's, ynne! I love how you used a pencil as a hairstick. It's a very playful addition to a bun, even if it's just because it's a pointy thing that was within reach. (That's how most pencils ended up in my hair when I had longer hair and worked in an office, or knitting needles when I'm at home.) The 3rd pic on the second row is my favourite! It looks so intricate:crush:

Finda, thank you! I admit the pencil was because I didn't have a hairstick yet and wanted to practice, but it worked surprisingly well. c: So I wouldn't mind going back to it as needed!

NicoleLionne, thank you! You're too kind. I wrote about the pencil above, but I wanted to add that knitting needles sound even better!
I definitely want to get better at rose buns to be able to wear one for the whole day (I didn't even dare go outside with this one).

But my hair is not short - it pretty long, but I have strong layers (I was cutting my hair in ponytail... on front my head).

Well I wore my hair up consistently for 80 days. My original plan was to try for 30 or 40. I wore my hair down today because my scalp was so sore. I borrowed my husband’s shampoo yesterday and my scalp is burning today, and a quick attempt at a bun told me it was better not to put my scalp through any more misery. (Note to self - my scalp doesn’t seem to tolerate sulphites anymore. This happened last time I used a (different) sulphate shampoo.)

Technically I haven’t broken my own rules, because I had allowed myself to wear my hair down if I had a headache or if I was socialising, and I did go for a walk with a friend today.

I think I’ll restart this challenge when my scalp returns to normal. I don’t see the point in putting myself through it at the moment. My scalp would be fine with a low ponytail or something similar but that’s not really protective for me, unless it’s a windy day in which case a ponytail or plait would prevent tangles.

There are several threads where members who primarily wear their hair up answer it in detail! (I'm not one of them so I can't answer myself.) There's this huge thread (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=118379) linked directly in the important threads index (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/announcement.php?f=9&a=11).

I'm back in this challenge, thanks to the lovely Lanalavallama ;)

My ends and layers just don't want to behave, and I really need to grow it out before I start evening it up. Otherwise I'll just be stuck between SL-APL for the next year. The ends aren't damaged, just uneven.

My goal is to wear it up for the remainder of 2020, so that's 77 days. I'm allowing myself 3 'cheatdays'. I may like to do a half-up during the holidays or wear it down when I have a once-in-a-blue-moon good hair day. Latter hasn't happened in the past 3 months, so I may not even need all of them.

All buns and braids count, ponytail doesn't since that is definitely not protective anymore. Apart from wearing it up, I want to try and use more of my hairtoys and scrunchies. At the moment the same ones are used over and over again. It would be nice to give the others a chance as well.

I wear a soft hat and some people wear satin lined beanies so the hair doesn’t get roughed up or dried out.

Are your hair sticks straight? Straight sticks and forks tend to poke into the hat more. A fork with head curve might help, if you’re not using one already.

Oh, as for the curved hair sticks - great idea Lady Stardust, I’ll definitely try that. Even though I go for shorter sticks when wearing head covers, they still might be the culprit. Also, might try braided buns, as they seem to distribute the tension better :)

My hair likes to be kept out of the cold in a beanie or a scarf. When I know I will be wearing my beanie a lot that day (lots of errands) and I don't want to keep redoing my bun, I either make Dutch braids and tuck the ends under eachother. That fits very nicely under my (lined) beanie and stays quite nice. Or I use u-pins in my bun instead. Those fit a lot better under a beanie than my hair sticks and forks. :) I knit my own beanies, so I'm able to make them very stretchy. That also makes it so much easier to put them over a bun. Hope any of this helps!

Day 5. Disk bun with Sodawood hairstick (so so pretty!)
Day 6. Disk bun with a stunning hairfork that I adopted from shaluwn_agape. I believe it's originally from 60th street hairforks.

I learned how to do disk buns!! They are my new favorite bun. Very comfortable and stays up all day long:D. I really need to start taking pictures of some of my up-do's. It would help a lot on days when I don't know what to do with my hair. I could post them here or in the 'updo's for BSL and shorter' thread.

Congratulations on finding a new comfortable bun! :) It's interesting how differently it works for people, my layers still fall out of a disc bun unless it's from a ponytail (then it's very solid). But yes, can recommend taking photos as a catalogue of wearable styles!

Let's try this again, shall we? :p
It's gotten very cold very fast, we even had a major snow storm yesterday, so I need to keep my hair up in a (satin-lined!) hat to protect it.
Luckily my hair is just now long enough to keep most of it up reliably again.

My goal is to wear my hair up any time I'm out of the house until Spring comes around and things warm back up! I'll probably be past my shoulders a bit by then :D
I got pretty used to wearing my hair up daily when I was visiting Texas, since it was so hot I was doing ponytails almost every day, so I'll probably keep it up most of the time even when I'm at home.
I just got a few new claw clips so this is a good excuse to wear them a lot

Thanks ynne! It's funny how hair works like that :).

I need to use a hairfork with 2 prongs to keep the layers tucked in without a ponytail base. If I use a hairstick I need a bit of extra hold.

I did manage to take pictures of my hairstyles this time :D

Disc buns somehow are really full when I make them. My pretty metal hairfork is almost too small!! That has never happened to me before... kinda thrilled about it and a little sad.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43082&d=1603628244

I also taught myself how to do rope braids and I really like them! They remain much nicer during the day then a regular 3 strand braid. Also got quite a lot of compliments about them in the zoom meeting.:)

I don’t believe I have worn my hair down since sometime in June, aside from a wash day while it’s drying, and a few hours in the evening at home. the ability to conceal slightly greasy roots is so useful! And it keeps me from touching my ends all the time and forever messing with it.

NicoleLionne Beautiful hair and hairstyles. Love the look of that fork too.

Thank you! It's very comfortable as well. I was a bit worried about a metal hairfork beforehand, but I would definitely consider another in the future.

Day 11. Disc bun with Alpenlandkunst spiral hairstick - cherry wood.
Day 12. Double disc buns with u-pins & wrapped hairstick bun.
Day 13. Disk bun with Alpnelandkunst hairfork - walnut wood.

More disc buns!:D

I really enjoyed the double space bun/disc bun variety. They were adorable and looked like decent-sized buns, not two tiny bumps on my head. I do need to practise those a bit more though, or find a better way to secure them then u-pins. (... off to find tiny hairforks...)

When the double buns turned out not to be storm-proof, I practised with a wrapped hairstick bun. Thrilled how easy that one is and it holds surprisingly well.

Lanalavallama, congratulations on passing two weeks mark & a new hairstyle!

NicoleLionne, the rope braid is really cute, no wonder it got you compliments! I find my metal hairfork to be the most comfortable accessory so far, probably because it's so thin. :) (Alpenlandkunst flat hairstick comes close second, but I do fear breaking it every time... on that note, if you're looking for tiny hairsticks, he does make custom ones!)

Hi,

I'm joining the challenge too since lately my hair has grown a lot and I'm usually already braiding it into an english/dutch/french braid.

My aim is to:
a) avoid knots :slap:
b) learn new updos

I will challenge myself starting from today to November the 30th...and then I'll think about continuing.

Anyways...
day 1: english braid ...I was in a hurry this morning and had no time to think about anything else.

I don't feel like I do some challenge in this moment - it's just more comfortable for me, if I have hair up all time... that's why I don't check how many days I made. If I use to something it's not challenge ;) .

I know there were quite a few of us involved in these challenges. And although I did not start any of them, I figured we could use a new, consolidated Wear Hair Up for x-amount of time challenge thread. Hadn't seen one pop up yet, so here it is!

Everyone seemed to have their own goals and things they wanted to achieve through the challenge. Some wanted to practice benign neglect and forget about their hair for a bit, others wanted to learn new updos, some wanted to stop playing with it, others were in it for the protection of their strands, some were just in for a personal challenge. I fall into all of these categories.

Oh! Rules! They seemed to vary from challenge to challenge, and person to person, and they were rarely rigid, but here's the general idea:
Hair up = updo of some sort that requires all of your hair (I don't think bangs/fringe count). Half-ups don't count as up.
Most all challenges included room to move when it came to drying your hair. Not everyone likes to put their hair up when it's still more than damp. I know I don't.
In the year challenge, the common goal seemed to be 95% of the time (so ~12 days off).
Most of the month/few month challenges seemed to be going for every single day and would tack an extra day onto their challenge if they wore their hair down for a special occasion.

My challenge started January 7th, 2008. Originally, I thought I'd go for a month, learn a few new 'dos, keep my hair protected, and be excited about new growth after a month. Then I started to enjoy the challenge of waking up every day and saying "Hmm... What should I do with my hair today?" and wanted to go for a year. DBF vetoed the one year challenge. I'll still be wearing it up at work for the most part when he comes home as it's easier to keep it from tangling with my headset this way, but he loves my hair down and I love him too much to deny him seeing it down often when he's been in Iraq for 15 months.

So mine's become a "Wear hair up until DBF comes home from Iraq" challenge. And today is day 60.

It's in a french braid with the ends tucked under and secured by a scrunchie as it's comfy and I was lazy.
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p4/smokierose/S6300899-1.jpg
Not my best, but I hardly see anyone now that I've started nights.

So yes. Join in if you want to and aren't already involved. Those who are involved, this is the place to keep us posted and seek support on those "My hair won't cooperate and I miss the way it falls on my shoulders/back/bum/etc!" days. I'm sure we all have them.

Who wants to play?

Hi guys! I’d like to join the challenge too :). My goals are; healthy, beautiful hair that retains length, learning better hair care routines than I have practiced in the past. I’m hoping to get to SL hair by 2021. I had mucho breakage from a texturizer that I didn’t keep up so I cut about four years of growth and I’m still missing that length 😦

Thanks ynne!

I did a variation on the rope braids today. I'll post a pic in my update below :D.

Definitely, probably because it's so thin it's very lightweight and doesn't pull at all.
Ooh, that's a great idea! I have a few hairforks from Alpenlandkunst and they are lovely. I think the maker of the metal fork does custom options as well, that would be a great option as well.

It's perfectly symmetrical:
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43180&d=1604153084

Depending in how I put it in my hair, it either looks a bit more silver or a bit more gold. Very versatile!

NicoleLionne

A bit more variation this time!

14. Wrapped hairstick bun with Sodawood hairstick.
15. Disc bun with silver+gold hairfork
16. French rope braids, ends tucked under to make a bun.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43178&d=1604152877

I like how quick and easy a wrapped hairstick bun is. But if I want it to last all day, I need to either add a few tiny claw clips or 2-3 u-pins. Once I have a bit more length, it will probably stay a lot better.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43177&d=1604152868

So happy with how this turned out! First time doing French rope braids and they look quite neat :). With a bit of practice, this would be a great up-do for fancy occasions.

Thanks! I want to see if I can make them stay up with u-pins, or perhaps add a pretty barette in the back. They are a nice variation on Dutch braids, for some reason you don't see a lot of rope braids 'in the wild'.

I used my first cheat day yesterday. My hair was looking incredibly good, pretty much as if I had just come back from a hair dresser. And since I didn't have to go anywhere, I kept it down the entire day. Which made the boyfriend very happy ;).

Wasn't very happy with the amount of tangles at the end of the day, so I'll probably won't have a lot of trouble sticking to my challenge until the end of the year. Since I started growing my hair out last year, my hair looked awful if I didn't put it up or spend a lot of time styling it. Yesterday made me feel a lot better about my decision to grow it out and quit dyeing. :)

I've been doing good at this so far!

Mostly just doing ponytail buns with scrunchies (a modified version that holds better than the classic ponytail bun you're probably familiar with (https://www.instagram.com/p/CHd0qNaBXVI/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)) and mini peacock twists with claw clips.
I can also use my hair scarf to keep my hair "up" without any other tools if I do it right, by wrapping it around my head a certain way, and then putting my hat on top of that to keep it more secure.
I save the scarf trick for the really cold days, it's great at keeping my head warm lol.

I'm trying to not do the same style too many days in a row, to prevent stress breakage.
I mostly wear my hair down at home, but once I'm at shoulder length that's going to change. Terrible length for rubbing against clothes and causing damage.
I actually got a satin shirt last year because I was anticipating that problem, it's going to be nice to finally need it!
