Chiming in a bit late, but I can confirm very similar experience - after years of thick overnight applications, I've switched entirely to thin-mix 1-2 hour applications
I've gotten around the drippy issue by making up my mix to roughly the consistency of housepaint. It's loose enough to spread easily, but thick enough to not drip. I pop a clear plastic shower cap overtop and wrap a length of jersey fabric overtop of that - that's enough to keep it contained.
It feels kind of liberating to streamline a method, doesn't it?
