first off congrats I'm happy for you both but I must say that this is the first site I've joined (I've been on many) that don't give members the chance to apply to be moderators, I'm not mad about it Ylva and Tatsu they sure deserve it, but most members (over a year active +) might have liked a chance too, I'm somewhat expecting this post to be ignored, another user in 2014 bought up a similar question and no one bothered to answer it

Another way of looking at is if the current mods choose from active members, we all have the same chance to prove ourselves suitable to be chosen when they're looking for new mods

Although there isn't a formal application process, we occasionally have members PM the mod team and volunteer to serve as moderators. Anyone is welcome to do that, although since we just got a couple new mods, it'll be a while before we need to think about that again. Volunteering isn't a guarantee of selection, but it puts people on our radar as potentially being interested. There are a lot of things we consider when looking for new mods. Some of it you'd expect, like being active and helpful on the boards, but there are other considerations like maintaining a balance on the mod team--diversity of viewpoints, mods in a variety of time zones, etc.

By the way, none of the other boards I've been on have had an application process for moderators.

We don't have an application process mostly because we have never needed one. Usually I have only seen this done on much newer boards.

Congrats to you both again! FWIW I would've voted for you both if we'd had an election I also think the mods headhunting for new mods is a good method of recruiting... applications would probably add a lot work and not necessarily bring forth any better contenders...

ETA: sort of on the topic: are mods green and admins pink? What's the difference between the two?

Admins (pink) are Mods (green) with additional permissions.

Admins can make basic changes within the existing forum software. For example, Admins can create new site announcements and alerts, but mods can only edit existing ones. Mods can approve or reject new applicants but Admins can block (some) bot sources from applying in the first place.
