Thread: Henna from Hennedrog

I understood that sodium picramate was a metallic salt. Chemistry is not my strong point though! I found this:

“Sodium picramate is the sodium salt of picramic acid” here
    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20086193/

Sodium is a metal so that seems fairly conclusive that sodium picramate is a metallic salt? (Question mark because, as I said, this is really not my strong point!)

There’s a lot of information on this forum about sodium picramate too, and I’ve read here and elsewhere that for some people it left their hair very dry, similar to the effect that bleach would have on their hair.

There are many reputable henna suppliers and personally I think it’s worth spending a bit more and being sure that you are using 100% henna.

Yeah, it's hard to find info on it!

Maybe I misunderstood but I still wouldn't want this one my head, especially when pure henna is plenty colorful on its ownhttp://www.chemicalland21.com/specialtychem/perchem/SODIUM%20PICRAMATE.htm

Here is an old thread that has some debate over sodium pictamate, actually this brand of henna.

We should have used the search function, I see c; Lots of conflicting opinions/experiences, but the conclusion seems to be that sodium picramate is most likely to do you dirty if you are later planning to bleach/use a different chemical dye over it.

Where did you find that info? (I looked everywhere).

I am sorry, I fail to understand how "it's not worked out". It's a metallic salt. Sodium is a metal. It's also a salt. I'm not sure why we use metallic salt specifically in the name (maybe we have other salts that are not sodium) but there is 0 question that this is a metallic salt. It is one.

Without being a chemistry person, it sounds like the logic of sodium picramate being a metallic salt is sound in my mind and some users report problems with the condition of hair after using henna with it in it, it can cause problems with subsequent bleach or peroxide, and a quick google search brings up that it’s explosive and carcinogenic. I wouldn’t use it, personally. But I don’t mind the orange glow and am not looking for a red color enhancer beyond the natural herbs

If you are a constant henna dyer, it should be no problem. The issue may arise when switching to chemical dye or when you have the habit of switching back & forth.
