Can you use henna-indigo over hennaed hair - would it cover up the red?

Yes! You can apply indigo as you like, no problems layering it. Currently, I primarily do 2-step henndigo on my roots only, but every once and awhile when I want the black to pop, I’ll do a whole head application. Aside from the fact that it gets heavy to apply to the lengths, there’s no problem.

This has actually gotten me thinking about my mom's hair, as she continuously dyes it black to cover her grays. Thanks for the info! By heavy, do you mean difficult?

Yeah, the chances of using chemical over the indigo in future... should that ever be a thought... I would think twice about indigo.

Indigo + bleach (peroxide / powder) do not mix, but peroxide/developer is in the dye kits unless it's deposit only, and I would dare question that being OK with indigo. I'd be careful, because I threw (this is just my experience) a black dye, chemical, over my green mess of a henndigo and it turned it even more green (matte black/greenish patches in my hair). I had to grow that mess out and had it dyed red again to counteract some of the green. Man, the messes I got myself in.

Good point, hmm. That if I ever even consider chemical, which I do sometimes, errr. I'll have to decide between natural vs. chemical, and I'm leaning towards natural because I'm really not wanting to dip back into the peroxide reds again, as pretty as it turns out. Also, henndigo itself left you with green hair?! That's not something that henndigo fades into, right...?

And yeah, this all reminds me of how my coloring journey finally ended, when I went to a salon for that for the first time (otherwise I always colored my hair myself and it was fine). I was left with a deep fried, hay-textured bleach blonde mess! All in one go, too.

I meant literally heavy. It’s essentially a mud pack, right? So if you apply henndigo to the entire length of your hair, it’s really a massive amount of mud you’ll have on your head.

If it’s a roots-only application, weight is far less of an issue.

ETA: Cool idea for your mom! My mom keeps flirting with the idea of henndigo but she hasn’t gone for it yet.

Re the weight of henna. When I henna my TBL hair, I wrap it into a bun right on top of my head. Centered that way, I don't feel the weight. These days I usually sleep in it anyway.
