Something probably happens over many, many years, but I think they're among the hair products with the longest life spans. I have one by Joico which actually has an expiry period of 24 months after opening, so if unopened, they'll probably be okay for a really long time. Also, the nature of their containers probably also enables long expiry periods.

I agree with Ylva, silicones are in general themselves chemically very stable products - they don't react with much under normal conditions. The particular formulation in which you find them is likely less stable (microbial acitivity, phase separations, etc) which makes that the limiting factor.

I have to say, I have had a couple bottles for about 3/4 years, and all I have noticed is the fragrance (men's cologne smelling) just... going, but I don't mind it at all. It's not gone off, don't get me wrong, it just... no scent. That's it. But it still does its job really well! Mine is the Kyrell serum from Aldi. I also have the Cien serum from Lidl, and I have the serums from IC Fantasia (nothing whatsoever wrong with those and I have had those almost 10 years).

I think it depends on what all's in it. I had a serum from Garnier that I tossed because it started growing tiny spots at the bottom. But this particular kind had a fair bit of oils.
