Once, not "at once!" (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=47364) :p

I remember a long time ago (it seems) that there was a hairtoy challenge in which you could wear a different hairtoy every day for a certain amount of time.

I have accumulated quite a little collection over the past year and a half, and have decided that a good way to challenge myself and see which ones did and didn't work would be to cycle through them all one at a time, wearing each for a day.

At the end I can clean out those that I don't use or that don't work for me right now, and get some funds back together to spend on other things that I would use more (perhaps more toys ;) ).

Is anybody else interested in doing this, too? I figured it was time. :D

Unfortunately I only have a limited number of styles that I can do at this point, so an album may not be that interesting, but I can give it a go.

MOD note: Thread title amended to reflect the nickname "WEO" - wear everything once.

I'm in DecafJane! :)

I was actually thinking of doing a 'different hairtoy every day' challenge this April, since I did a 'different updo every day' challenge in April 2008 and wanted to do something similar again.
I guess I could start before April, because I might have enough hairtoys to go longer than 30 days ... I'll have to count them!

I don't think I'll be getting rid of any toys at the end, though. :P

Actually, I've been considering this, too. My motivation was that I have quite a few pretties that I never wear and this challenge would force me to include them. And also because I now have enough things for this challenge to be possible.

And, I can't promise too much variety in updos, either, as I have my stand-bys and that's it.

What a great idea! This way I will find out what I really like, as there are some things gathering dust...

Αw, darn, I read it as "at once" and had the perfect picture to post!

Anyway, I'd need to find my toys again before I did this. I'm missing one stick from every pair I have right now. It's absurd!

Freznow, that is a fantastic picture! One day I will have enough hair to manage that, too. :p

This will be fun. We're sure to discover a few new treasures that we forgot we had. :)

Freznow, that's hilarious! I love that picture.

So, when would this start? I had actually been thinking about seeing if anyone wanted to do this for April, since that was when it was last year, I believe.

DecafJane
March 21st, 2009, 04:50 PM
I'm starting it now, because I have more than 30 hairtoys, so perhaps because of the wide variety in the number of toys the participants own, we can start and finish when we would like to.
However, the start of April sounds like a nice, clean start if you want to! :)

I'm going to have a shower now and find one that I have forgotten that I own, and start the album. :)

I think I'll start in April. New month, not challenge. :)

Freznow, that picture is so classic! And I have two pairs of the plastic fleur de lys sticks you're modeling (one pair was a gift)---my favorite inexpensive pair!
I couldn't wear all my toys at once---which is how I read the title of this post, too; my head would fall over!

It would take me less than a week to use all of my hair toys.

Then you are more sensible and have more self-control than I do. :)

Jessaka
March 21st, 2009, 10:11 PM
Freznow, that's an awesome picture! I read it the same way you did, I thought we were supposed to put every piece we had in our hair all at once, HAHHAAHH. That would've been cool.

That would be me too.
I need to purchase some more toys and less hair washing or oiling, etc. products. But I am so afraid I will buy things that I cannot get to work for my hair and then they will gather dust.

spidermom

I actually have more than I thought - I could go nearly 2 weeks before reusing an item. I don't think it's self control. I spend/waste plenty of money.

I am definitely on board with this challenge. I tried it last year, but wasn't really as dedicated, due to a much more hectic schedule back then. ANYHOO, I definitely think I need to do this. Perhaps I should start today. I have no idea how long it will take me to wear everything in my collection. I am thinking a couple months. :blushing:

I've started the challenge today. :)
I have a month and a half's worth to get through! (That was a surprise, when I counted them up! And I'm not counting a few sticks that I made myself, or the odd combs and a plain barette.)

I completely read this as "at once" too and was really looking forward to super-crazy spiky buns. I may have to do that myself anyway. :)

If I don't include my scrunchies as "hair toys" and just stick to clips and barrettes and sticks and forks...I might have almost a month's worth. Maybe. I'm poor, so I don't have as much, but I think I'll find I have a lot more than I thought when I look.

I think I'll probably start an album for this too, if I have space. :) Maybe tomorrow, maybe beginning of April. One of the two. Depends on how quickly I get set up for it.

I decided to start today, after all. Because I was excited and because I know I have more than a month's worth of hair implements.

I won't be counting scrunchies or bandanas as that could carry me on for several months. :tmi: But I will be counting clips this way: all brown are 1, all black and 1, all clear are 1, etc.

I went ahead and started today too, mostly because I was excited. :) I took pictures before I left for work this morning, but I won't be able to post them until I get home (I'll edit this post and add the link). I've got my hair in a half-updo with an Infinity bun held with my wiggly cedar stick and a few hair pins. I try to be really gentle with this stick, since it's already snapped once.

I washed my hair last night, so I really wanted to wear it down today (it's always nicest on this day). But being in the hair toy challenge, what to wear? I decided to count all my headbands as one toy - after all, how creative can a hardform headband be? - and so today I wore my hair down with a headband. I didn't take a picture of the style, because it was too simple, but the headband was #2 in this picture.

bjt, Xandergrammy and mugglemomof3, thank you! :) Okay, the secret to my french twist: I make the twist up the back, but instead of tucking the rest of my hair under it, I anchor the twist with a comb or pins, then pile the rest on top of my head - just above the twist - in whatever bun seems appropriate. Usually it's just a soft cinnabun held with pins. Easy as! :)

Back again, with my Day 3 pic (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=2792&pictureid=35131): I bought these hairsticks years ago from an auction site when I was desperate to get my hands on any hairsticks I could find, and have never really worn them. Now I know why. :steam

These are actually two matching sets. I tried to insert the second red-dangled stick, and discovered the tip is split. After much painful twiddling, it actually grabbed some strands and pulled them out. :( So in went the yellow one, with me now feeling very grumpy and not caring too much. So it's not a great 'do, sorry....

Now, the good thing is that this challenge is already making me re-evaluate my hair toy collection. These ugly sticks need to be either thrown out or made over; maybe they could be shortened, given new tips and some interesting beads. :hmm:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2775&pictureid=35061

I like this style, but it also teaches me that I could never really stand to have short hair. I kept getting annoyed when the tail flopped onto my neck.

Both the hair and the stick are stunning!

Nice braid.

Monkthemonk stick in dakota Dymondwood. With a pic of the end, since you can't see it, which has a piece of filled tagua nut. (I was awfully lucky on this one, as there were two of these and the first one got bid up handsomely, but no one but me noticed when he posted the second one.)

I put my hair up in a ponytail and sectioned it off into two braids: a regular three-strand on the right and a regular two-strand rope braid on the left. I wound the 3-strand braid first (clockwise around and under the rope braid) and then wound the 2-strand rope braid around counter-clockwise and wound the tail inside the circle I'd made with the 3-strand. Clear as mud??? I was just playing around, trying to come up with something new, and it turned out nothing like I expected, but I kinda liked it. So I really appreciate your compliement. :flowers:

My siggy pic is several months old so it is a few inches longer now, but it is very, very thick hair and springs up a few inches shorter than it is (stretched it is an inch or two above BSL). Take heart - you'll be able to do the fancy updos much sooner than me, so I guess that is an advantage of thinner hair. BTW, your cinnabun looks cute. :)

I tried to do three different fancy buns today - the Orchid, the Rosette, and the Sapphire Knot. They all fell apart within seconds, so I gave up and took the usual Nautilus route. I decided that the stick I planned to use today probably shouldn't be torque-ing down the Nautilus, so I used a plain wooden stick blank to secure the bun and inserted my awesome super-fancy stick decoratively. The super-fancy stick is one I made myself just last week. :)

Oh sweetie- this fancy hairstick you made is just gorgeous and is meant to be worn. I don't think it's a bad thing to wear a beautiful hairstick to school or work.

I'd love to wear it anywhere, but it drives me bonkers because it keeps catching in my hair and it's very heavy. That gold bead topper is a gold-plated Bali-style bead. I didn't realize quite what the weight of all that would be when I made it. lol But I still love the stick.

I love that slide. Can slides like that be used for updos of any kind?

Yes, you can do a lot with them (if you have enough hair :p! Mine's pretty thin) It's basically a hairstick underneath, so the stick anchors your updo and the slide part goes on top.

Thanks everyone for the compliments!

Oh, and I completely forgot! Today I started out with a KarenLynn Knot held up with some plastic red plaid sticks from Claire's. It wasn't very stable, so it switched to a Hair Knot. That lasted about 2/3 of the day before I went nuts (I can't stand loose buns!) and traded the flimsy sticks out for the bronze stick which lives in my purse. No pictures because of all the quick changes, but it taught me that it's time to sell or swap those cute plaid sticks! lol

AprilElf, you are the queen of updos.
Where did you get that bun band? :)

AprilElf
April 3rd, 2009, 06:36 AM
Hey levelek! Thanks. :)

That 'bun band' is a metal head band that has too much tension and is too slippy to stay on my head. When I tried wearing it as a head band, it kept slipping backwards and was only prevented from falling off my head by the fact I had my hair in a bun at the time. Hence 'bun band'!
I actually nabbed it from my mum who had bought it for herself, but didn't wear it. I don't know where she got it - most likely a local chemist or department store.

It's tough to get it to stay with a fork, unless it's a wider multi-prong one, IMO. I haven't been able to get it to work with narrow forks.

Xandergrammy: www.majestichairflower.com

You can fool around with the shapes 'n' stuff. Given the mass of your hair (which is truly astonishing) I'm not sure you'd ever be able to get it over a bun. But you could do some kind of partial knot and have the rest of your hair poking out or something.

You can pick the bead colors and also the colors of the stick ends (and the sticks on their own make reasonable hair sticks). It's a lot of fun to fool with.

This is my favorite hair stick. It's a little long but was hand-carved in the Marshall Islands. I don't even know what kind of wood it is but I love the feel. They hand wax using Johnson's paste wax instead of varnishing so it is very smooth. I didn't realize how gray my hair is now. Holy Buckets, it's charcoal and silver.

I would totally be afraid to buy that from Dibbler. Then again, I'd be afraid to buy anything from Dibbler.

I've fallen off the challenge a bit for the last few days because I've discovered why I keep going back to the same handful of toys...they don't fall out! So I need to tweak my styles a bit and possibly remove some toys from the pool. That said, I've pretty much already shown all my good toys - with the exception of 2 or 3 - so I'm down to the "bent plastic stick" dregs now.

Your hair is amazing and I love it that you have so many toys! I'm going to practice a new hair style this week using one of the videos on LHC and once I get that style down, I'll move on to the next one. Your hair styles are my inspiration!

LovingLife, there are a lot of sellers on Ebay and Etsy (search for hairfork, hairstick etc).
I've also put this link into my bookmarks yesterday: http://www.crystalmood.com/
They seem to have both sparkly stuff and wooden sticks and forks. Haven't bought from them myself yet, but the things from them I see on the board look nice, and they're very affordable!

Xandergrammy, I love that Baerreis fork!
Do you happen to know what kind of wood it is? It looks gorgeous. :inlove:

WendyG, I love that Quattro stick as well, and your bun, too - what kind of bun is it? It looks almost like a cross between a bun and a French Twist.

Your hair is always worth a photo, Teazel! :)

I have some catching up to do ...
Between Day 12 and Day 13 I washed my hair and I didn't wear a hair toy all day.

Day 13: Quecraft Lizard (recently acquired from DecafJane) in a Plain Braided Bun.

Day 14: 'Spike' stick (from Camden Markets, London) in a Pinless Braid Bun.
(No pic taken on this day, but here's one from my album.)

Day 15: Tribu fork in a weird bun - not the best combination.
I don't know what possessed me to wear the fork sideways. I hardly ever wear this fork anyway.

Aprilelf, I think that fork looks just fine sideways!

Is the lizard actually holding the bun, or are you using it for decoration?

Some sort of creatively folded (for me) French braid contraption held up with a gold feather comb I picked up from The Icing a week or two ago. I have a weakness for all things feather.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2775&pictureid=36115

It's a French braid with the end tucked up in the pocket under the braid at the nape, then folded in half and pinned with the comb.

Day 17: Celtic Slide in a Cameo Bun, I think? (a rose bun wrapped in a braid)
This slide isn't fooling anyone! :D It's not securing the updo at all; it's purely decoration. I have a handful of slides to use in this challenge, but don't have the opportunity to wear halfups too often ... so I had to get creative. ;)

As for the name of the challenge, I misread it the first time too, but I like it. To me, it perfectly describes the spirit of the challenge- use all your hairtoys once before using one twice.
