I think I would microtrim at shoulder actually. What I think is a problem with layers is that the ends at the shorter layers are so much harder to trim, and when they start to get damaged it is usually a little too late to leave them while you microtrim for a year to get rid of them. It is easier to just cut the whole length when damage appears. But if you are willing to S&D a lot in the future I would say go ahead! If it start to look thin you could microtrim then!
