My usual shampoo is creamy and my scalp hair seems perfectly well conditioned but I'm wondering if that's one reason it doesn't look clean by day 2 - even after a wash day without scalp conditioning, which is light and I make sure to rinse, rinse, rinse out thoroughly anyway.

How true the creamy/clear distinction is I don't know, but I'm willing to give it a try. (Ironically my pre-LHC shampoo was clear green, but with SLS and SLES stripped everything so my scalp overcompensated and I was a complete greaseball again by the end of day 1!)
I now have a shampoo for oily hair and it is creamy, pearly, white, it clarifies more than the clear Pantene Aqua Light, so I don't think it's always the rule that clear shampoos clarify the most. It all depends upon the ingredients.
