Check out the first post in this thread for a chart of what you're looking for: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ad.php?t=28574
I rarely see actual splits, but many crinkles. It's amazing what you find when you start looking.
There was a thread on S&D tips recently that might also help: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ad.php?t=41253
Have fun!
ETA: Just wanted to add that you don't have to S&D instead of trims, you can do both, or neither. See this recent thread for discussion: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ad.php?t=40929

Well, those links pretty much covered it, but the way I do it is that I hold my hair up in front of my computer screen.
You can also see them really easily outside.
*wink*

If you don't see them, you might not have any. If you haven't been abusing your hair, at 15 inches it's still pretty young.
