I never do S&D
I guess it's fine to do it whenever you notice a split end.
How often do you all search and destroy? How often should you search and destroy? Tbh, I am actually new to S&Ds so I am hoping to get on a bimonthly search and destroy routine...is that too frequent/infrequent?

I never S&D. Probably lose some length to splits, but I'd be losing some length to S&D, so... I think it's a tricky thing to start. Seems like it can become a habit or even a compulsion.![]()
Opting out of Friend Requests, thank you very much!
Never. Any split ends can wait until the next time I get a trim (which is in between six months and a year and a half, though I had to wait twice as long when I was growing it back from losing it from chemo, since there was no way I was getting a trim until it grew back to its former length, which was mid back range).

I never search and destroy either! We are helpful, aren't we? I think like most things it would be personal to you, if you have time on your hands and notice split ends that are bugging you, go for it. I have seen people post that they spent a couple of hours doing it because they find it relaxing.![]()
I've been doing it probably once or twice a week. I have a very bright light near my spot on the couch, and scissors happen to be within reach, too. So if I see a split, I grab the scissors and go hunting. Somehow it's relaxing.
Hair is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

It's been a few years since I did any S&D. I never really got into the habit, anyway.

A proper S&D? Once or twice a year, maybe. A minor one, every few months or so.
Do check for split ends any time I've had my hair braided or loose/ponytail when outside.
And imo, there is no should involved. How often to do S&Ds, or whether to do them at all, is up to oneself to decide.

I generally just do S&D for knots (which have greatly decreased, hooray) but rarely for splits unless they are egregious. I tend to do it when I'm combing my hair, if I feel a snag, I stop and use the scissors, mainly to stop myself from just popping it off, which would ultimately weaken the hair strand.
Whenever I start to notice enough tangles/splits to get me irritated, which is probably every 3 or 4 months. How long I can go between S&D really depends on what I've been doing with it, gentle handling makes a big difference. Since I'm growing out layers I microtrim too, in addition to S&D. It might become more often once my hemline is how I want it.
