Default Rhassoul clay in my fine hair...

    Hello LHC.
This will just be a short post.
I've tried all sort of alternatives to shampoo as I find it really hard to find a shampoo that's actually natural! And almost everything will make my hair dull and dried out.
I wanted to try shampoobars for ages but the proper, whollyhemp, real soap with glycerin variant is difficult to get hold on where I live.
So after knowing about it's existence for ages I finally picked up Rhassoul while I was home for christmas. I never tried it before because I'd heard it's terrible drying and so not suitable for fine straight hair like mine.
I've washed with it twice and my hair is silky and soft in the shower and soft and untangled when its dry! No conditioner was needed!
My hair has been very dull and tangled lately because I moved somewhere with hard water, but right now it feels strong and soft. Also after washing it does not in anyway feel stripped or squeaky clean!
Obviously I haven't yet tried it with the hard water where I live now because I'm still enjoying the comforts of returning home for the holidays.
I really just wanted to say that Rhassoul clay can work for some people because I'd read a lot of bad experiences about it beforehand.
I hope you are all enjoying the holidays and.... Oh look it's snowing again!

I've used Rhassoul clay also and haven't found it drying. It has great cleansing properties and is great for people who can't use soaps because they are sensitive to them. I have to put mine through my vitamix dry container to make it into a powder first because it comes in big chunks.
That was a wise choice and I'm glad its working for you

Yes, I think clays are awesome for people who react to many things and need some very inert, safe cleanser, it's highly unlikely to irritate skin and is a great absorbent ingredient. It's awesome for people with perpetually oily scalps, just like a mud mask works on oily skin.

I do sometimes wonder if it washes out of hair completely. I tend to rinse my ends very quickly, to avoid too much wet manipulation, so I don't know if clays stick to hair shaft, and if they do, if it's a problem?
Does anybody else feel like hair is heavier after a clay wash? Because to me, it's a sign that some of that clay may be left behind... and being very absorbent, that clay left behind can later absorb water and oil from hair... If anybody knows for sure, please put my mind at rest.

Yes meteor, you are right. Clay left on hair as a treatment can be very difficult to get rinse out. Its very much like rinsing out a henna treatment. If you are worried about possibie mechanical damage then you'd be best of spending extra time rinsing than having the possibility of having it stuck it your hair, especially near your roots. The clay will prevent your hair from moving freely and could cause more mechanical damage than spending more time rinsing.
Hair can only get so wet so if its going to be wet you might as well spend the right amount of time rinsing.

Thank you so much, hennalonghair! I like that comparison to henna, I think it makes sense for all mud-based treatments to have that similarity.

So back where I live (where the water is quite hard). It definitely doesn't have the same effect. I can still distinguish the shiny smooth hair underneath. But it sort of coats my hair which in turn makes it feel tangly and not at all soft.
I will definitely be investing in a filter, but have any of you ladies got other ideas for how to work the problem out?

You could try borax or washing soda to soften the water. Might want to try it independent of the mud first to make sure it doesn't do anything untoward to your hair.

I find clay is a great mild cleanser, i'm still perfecting the recipe for me, but it's much better than herbs alone in cleansing imo. (note it needs an acid added to get the pH right, as it is very basic.)

Very true. I like adding aloe vera juice or a tiny bit of ACV to the mud to reduce the pH to a scalp/hair-friendly range.

Try adding miracle water to your clay wash to combat the hard water - since clay washes need some acid anyway to neutralize the ph, and miracle water works miracles for hard water residue. Maybe it'll work.
