Thread: Hair Strand Variation - Texture?

Default Hair Strand Variation - Texture?

I was wondering, is it normal to have strands that vary in thickness/diameter? I noticed some shed strands (all of my longest layers) that are thick and dark. I have a bunch of ones that are quite a bit shorter that are a lot thinner.

I'm wondering because for a while, before I was able to get a family doc., I had gone to a doctor who had me convinced my hair was thinning and I had alopecia. I visited a specialist who assured me nothing was wrong, but I might have some left over paranoia, since one of the signs of alopecia is having strands shed and grow back progressively thinner till they stop growing.

this comes up fairly often around here (:
Yes, it's completely normal! Some hairs are different thicknesses, different colours or even different textures. Talk to your doctor if notice changes, but if you're concerned, it doesn't hurt to get a second (or in this case, third ) opinion

I think it's normal since different part of the scalp go through different mechanical damage and use.

Yes! it is normal. I am the same exact way! My hair is strawberry blonde and curly. The blonde strands are fine and wavy, and the red strands are thick and curly

Yes, I have that too. I'm naturally a overall dark brown/auburn wavy. My individual hair strands range widely though. Some are thin, whispy, and light. Some are super curly, some are straight, some are thick, some are thin. Every once in a while I will find a wildly kinky, very dark, and course hair strand too. Of course, that's not to mention the wiry gray hairs that love to go every which way.

I was told I had several (very) different textures because of being mixed race, but talking to my friends, that has nothing to do with it, its very common.

Yup, its normal! I have ranges in texture from straight to wavy to wiry. The thickness varies wildly, too. The hairs at my hairline, particularly my temples, are thinner and finer that elsewhere. As long as you don't notice any drastic changes, I wouldn't worry about it.
