I don't know if this is the proper place for this question, but I was wondering who was/is your hair "idol" or the person who inspires you to keep growing?

For me, it was when I watched Winona Ryder in "Little Women". I just love her hair, and when I saw that for the first time, I told myself I would have hair as long as hers. I've cut it a few times since then, but she remains my hair goal, and I'm shooting for it once more.

So, who was the person that first made you want to grow your hair? :)

Probably like more guys, mine was a rockstar.
Because I have very thick and curly hair, my mom told me it was impossible to grow it long when I first started to think about it. The more I saw Slash from Guns N' Roses, the more I got convinced I'd look a whole lot better with long hair.

After about five years, she still tries to convince me to get a haircut. :eyebrows:

I was never allowed to have long hair as a child. I don't blame my Mom as she had 3 little kids each only 11 months apart. I'm sure she didn't want to mess with having to comb 3 heads of long hair. Anyway that was my first reason to grow. I've grown, cut, grown, permed etc. Now I'm growing again! I like it best when it's long and natural.

My dad and myself. My dad has always liked long hair on me and we've made several friendly bets over the years that I could get it long again (I've failed miserably so far!) And I keep looking at younger pics of me when my hair was about lower back and that keeps me inspired.

My mum was my inspiration! She had long black hair and lots of it. As a little girl she used to sit on it and through her adult years it was always at least waist length. Whenever I look at her photos I crave to have my own like hers. I'll find some of those pics and share them with you.

Even though my half-sister is constantly begging for me to cut my hair, she was actually the one who inspired me to grow it out in the first place.

When I was little, I never thought that long hair was an option. My mom always cut my hair into a short bob, and everyone in my family had short hair as well, so I accepted it as the status quo. However, when I was about five, my sister grew her hair out to apl and I was struck by how much better it looked and I started refusing to get haircuts, wanting my hair to be as long as possible. I got rather attatched to my long hair, and grew to hate even the occasional trim, though both my mom and my sister thought that my hair was far too long.

I've loved long hair ever since I was a very little girl, so I really couldn't say who my first inspiration was. Probably a Disney princess :p

I was like a lot of others who thought my curly frizzy unruly hair had to be cut shorter and layered to death to halfway look nice. It was actually when I came here that I finally realized it was just because I didn't know how to take care of it. As for the inspiration part, there have been long haired people all through my life that I have admired for their beautiful tresses, one in my school as I was growing up with waist length silky hair, the only one in my school with long hair. She was the first and her name was Connie. Crystal Gayle was also a big hair idol of mine as I got older.

Good thread. Not sure who my first inspiration was. Possibly a girl called Clare who was at primary school with me. She had very straight, dark brown hair that was almost down to her bum. She used to wear it in pigtails mostly.

Next inspiration was Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth - especially in the ballroom scene where I wanted her hair and her dress (look it was the 80s ok...)

As an adult, when I decided to grow my hair my inspirations were an online friend of mine (not from LHC), and the hair in LOTR movies and also a Knight's Tale.

A friend of my mother that used to take care of me every now and then when I was around 5-6. She had the most fantastic hair - golden blonde, not the lightest blonde, more like ripe wheat/rye; thick, thick, thick; wavy (from memory I'd say she was a 2B) and reaching well below tailbone. She mostly wore her hair down - at least the times I was with her. I still remember what the hair looked like and her name, can't for the life of me remember her face. :D

my best friend.
I have to admit I was one of those of the mindset that longhair wasn't "modern" or it was "old-fashioned" which neither is a bad thing but I didn't think long hair would meld with my personal style.
My best friend brought those ideas to rest though. She's had waist-length hair for years and manages to style and cut it in ways that didn't make it seem stagnant and still unique to her.
she's inspired me to challenge myself to first, have the patience to grow my hair that long, and to challenge my creativity so that I can make the most of the experience. I can't wait!

Being in high school in the late 60's and entering college in the early 70's long hair was considered normal on guys my age back then. I've preferred long hair ever since that time.

My most recent inspiration was my ex-wife. For many years she had the most beautiful long hair. Three years ago (before the split) I asked her to once again let hers grow. She informed me that if I wanted long hair I could let mine grow to my a**. So I am. She never believed that I would actually do it!

Charlie's Angels and The Price is Right, I always wanted long hair like some of the ladies on those shows but my mother would never let me grow my hair out because she "didn't want to bother with it" I've got to be honest I'm still a bit bitter over the whole thing, it was awful having everyone think I was a boy because I mostly wore pants as a kid because again mom didn't want to bother with any frills. You'd have thought that a woman who spent so much time watching soap operas her whole life who was in love with the glamor of it would have made sure her daughter actually looked a bit girlish, heh.

My older daughter who is 11 now has longer hair than me, I gave her the choice, the only time I had it cut short was when she was 4 and then it was just to her shoulders after a really bad gum that she tried to cut out with kiddie scissors incident, lol.

for me it was myself. I had very long hair as a child and loved it. I loved seeing it in pictures. I only had it short between the ages of12-13 and 16-20? between 13 and sixteen it was never longer than apl though.

I am my own inspiration because I know that I look and feel 100% better with long hair.

other people who inspire me are people here who have longer than classic healthy hair. Noone specifically.

When I went roller skating "1979" there was a girl with curly hair like mine but her's was to her hips. Mine at that time was only about three inches even all over my head and a curly mess. I find it easier to take care of now that it is long.

I had long hair as a kid, but since I first cut it way back when, I've never had the patience to grow it much past APL. The latest inspiration to grow it was a good friend I hadn't seen in years. She always had hair around BSL to midback, but the last time I saw her, it was pulled back into a pony tail that reached about tailbone length, so I would guess her hair when down was around classic. It was so pretty and unusual, and reminded me of the hip length hair I had in high school, it made me realize that I'm a longhair at heart. I'm going for tailbone now, and if I am still inspired, maybe classic. I like the look of tailbone, but the "idea" of classic, if that makes any sense!

my mom.

when i was a little kid, my mom had this really long hair, about tailbone length. and would think "my mom is so pretty"

then she went out of town to visit relatives, and came back with a short hair cut, and blonde highlights. and suddenly, i thought "my mom isn't so pretty :("

both my sister and i had long hair as little kids, but one day my mom decided to have all my hair cut off because she didn't feel like dealing with two heads of hair in the morning. i guess because i was the youngest, she figured i wouldn't care if i had no hair. needless to say, it was pretty traumatizing. so yeah, it's my mom who inspired me to want long hair.

I had a similar experience with my mom. She had waist length bottle dyed blonde hair, but it was still really healthy looking. She was a working mom so one day when I was in 2nd grade or so she picked me up from daycare with all of her beautiful hair cut off to above the shoulder. :( I was an only child and she was a single mom, so I felt betrayed that she cut her hair without telling me first! I was so angry! Plus, I thought that she had gone from being really pretty to not so pretty. She caved in to the idea that a mom (she was over 40 at this point) of a certain age needs to have short hair. She never grew it out again.

Don't laugh, but when I was little, I wanted hair like Daisy Duke's. I also liked Wonder Woman and Charlie's Angels. I suppose in the the 70's and early 80's most of the popular actresses had long hair.

I also had an aunt and child minder who both had STUNNING long hair. (Actually my hair was classic until I cut it short at eight). My aunt's hair was waist length and almost perfectly straight, and I thought it was so pretty. The child minder's hair was classic length, and she used to let me brush it. I could brush it for hours.

John Myung of Dream Theater, and suprisingly my music teacher. I admire them both as people and musicians... When my teacher told me that he had hair down to about the middle of his bicep (almost bsl on a woman) when he was a teenager (albeit it was a MULLET!), I thought "Wow..."

John Myung has the beautifullest Asian hair ever. Okay, Morticia and Emichee are tied with him. Theirs is longer than his now, because he's cut it to about waist. It's funny; his hair is raven's wing black, perfectly straight. Mine is ashy golden brown, and wavey. Complete opposites.

Laura Ingalls Wilder. Not from the TV show though. The Little House on the Prairie books were my favorite treasures as a young girl. I distinctly remember reading about how her mother's braids were long enough for her to sit on. And all the different ribbons and bonnets :) I insisted my mom make me a calico dress and bonnet to play dress up in :)

As I got older I discovered Little Women and Ann of Green Gables who also inspired me. I am such a bookworm. I seriously can't wait for my DD to learn to read so I can read all of them with her.

I can't remember any particular person who inspired me to start growing my hair. I decided to do that partly because I wanted fairytale princess hair, and partly because I was developing an interest in medieval fashion, and women used to have long hair back then. I think I was about 13 years old then. Later, I have had long hair sightings, IRL as well as in movies, that has inspired me to set certain goal lengths, but that was when I already had grown my hair for a while and started to pay more attention to other people's hair.

Hmmm...

I'm not sure if anyone in particular inspired me to grow my hair, but I've always been attracted to long hair. I remember when I was young, about seven or eight, I really wanted longer hair, although I had no particular goal in mind. It was just never long enough to satisfy me. At the time it was roughly tail bone length, and it didn't grow longer than that. (of course, I was doing HORRIBLE damage to my hair, inflicting the "early" terminal length. It's a wonder it was able to grow that long.)

So, I guess it's just something I've always liked/wanted.

oh yeah... my great aunt also had hair down to her knees... it was pearl white and so shiny and strong with little corkscrew curls at the end. I guess the weight of her hair made the rest just kinda wavy. I thought she was so beautiful at her old age ( 98 )... she never told us her hair secrets though

Although I had WL hair as a child, I think my grandmother inspired me to grow my hair back as an adult. I had always said that I would grow it back, but didn't really decide until my granny passed away. She had beautiful classic length hair that she wore in a braided bun or one long silver braid. I decided that I wanted to have the same thing if I lived to be 100 as she did.

Hmmmm.....I can remember being a kid and watching the Sonny & Cher show with my parents and longing for Cher's exotic, black, straight, shiny awesome hair. I had short really light blonde hair that stuck out everywhere (cowlicks, dontcha know!).

But my younger sister is the one who inspired me to ultra long lengths. She took a gap year between her 2nd and 3rd years of college (she's 3 years younger than me), and when she came back her red curly hair was just about mid-thigh length. I'd never thought about growing my then BSL-ish hair super long.....I was satisfied until I saw her hair when she got off the plane. Then I kinda went.......Oh, wow, I wonder if my hair would get that long?????

It did. Longer, actually. :)

In one sense, nobody - I just knew that I wanted long hair from about the age of 7 or 8 onwards, but at various times in my life, I have been encouraged by a variety of people who have had hair that I could aspire to, and even more that I just quietly envy.

My mother. Not by having long hair herself, but because I heard her say many times as I was growing up that she wishes her hair didn't curl "weird" so she could grow it long like my father would like her to have it. That just put the idea in my head that long hair was the ideal.

No one but me, really. As early as the age of five, I had hair down to my butt. And as recent as 2007, I had hair towards APL. I realized I love my hair much more when it is long, and it is more "me" than short hair ever was.

For me it was my Mum and Dad's friend Susie. She lived in Scotland with her husband and two children - all the family had Vicking red hair. Susie's was in a long plait that I remember just skimmed her tailbone. I was fascinated by it no other adult I knew had hair that long!

I had short Beatles style hair when I was a kid, then my sister told me to grow it. I said ok why not. :) And didn't stop until waist/tailbone. I cut it after a while, but regretted it :( But the real inspiration was.. a guy... who loved long hair, so mostly I grew it because of him.

I have and will have long hair because:
1. I LOVE my long hair
2. short hair doesn't suit me, it makes me look like a guy
2. I'm kinda a hippy and with my long hair I stand up for peace.

I've always had 'long-ish' hair but I was inspired finally by my cousin, whose hair goes about o her waist. It's horribly damaged but still very very pretty (blonde, thick, slightly wavy) and I finaly decided to try to grow out the hair. also, I wanted to make sure myhair looked healthy while doing it,since it is already somewhat damaged.

Other inspirations are people like Gisele Bundchen and models whose hair looks decievingly healthy... but looong.

honestly .. i was happy just growing my hair to APL, til i went to a club .. a predominantly caucasian club and saw this snobby looking girl flicking her MBL hair all over infront of the mirror. She had the longest hair in the club ... and really and truly the way she looked while she was in the mirror was like " I know my hair looks good and your hair will never get this long" (I'm african amercan btw). So from that time in the club I was like Im going to get to MBL then Im going to get WL .. and then we will see who is flicking ... very childish I know ...

I've pretty much always had long hair. As a child,I was probably inspired most by the horses on our farm. My sister and I had loved imagining we were ones too and of course every pretty pony has a long flowing tail! As I got older I learned that length helped keep the curls under control. In the past 15 years, it's been a combination of my liking and the "anti-inspiration" of several short haired relatives who ask me if I'm ready to cut it yet.

I came into work one morning and was walking through another department to get to mine, when I saw a new person to the department. It was a young woman with the most stunning tailbone length blonde hair. My jaw hit the floor I was so surprised and amazed and envious and appreciative. She amazes me everytime I see her.

The second I was able to process a coherent thought I said to myself " I am growing my hair that long!" At the time, I had a layered cut that in the front was around shoulder length and in the back just a little bit longer. I think I found the LHC not long after that. (circa thanksgiving 2006) I refer to her as my "real life" hair idol and my "online" idols are Nightshade and Dianyla.

the first person was my mom. when I was little I remember sitting in the car with my parents. we were leaving my grandparents house and I was sitting in the back seat. I remember looking at my mom and seeing her long hair. all of a sudden I find myself saying that I wanted long hair like my mom [she had about waist length I think] and that was that. but then a few years later my mom chopped all of her hair off to shoulder/neck length and I lost my drive and inspiration to keep my long hair and got rid of it several years later.

then, just a few months ago, I was looking up long hair and saw someone with tailbone length hair. honestly, I don't remember seeing a lot of people with that long of a hair so I was intrigued. when I googled "tailbone length hair" I found a picture of Emichee's perfect hair and was instantly inspired to grow my hair to that length.

Thank you, Ven, that made my day :flowers:

I don't think I ever had a real-life hair idol :ponder: but it was a montage of færie tale princesses, fantasy elf women and such. I've aways loved long hair, ever since was too young to make that longing into a coherent thought. I'd say one that always stood out for me in particular was Lady Amalthea from the Last Unicorn. Just that long moonlit white hair. *swoon*

Debra Jo Fondren - Playmate of the Year 1978. I saw her on the Playboy cover and thought her hair was drop dead gorgeous. I still have the pictures I put into a scrapbook. There's some YouTubes on the 'net showing her long tresses.

Like a few other posters said, Cher, Crystal Gayle and Jane Seymour all were inspiring. All gals from my growing up years.

About 25 years I had 4 separate pictures of women with long hair framed. A couple of those pics are the avatars of other LHC members. I thought that was great... we're all on the same wavelength

I've always been long-hair envious, but never committed to it for myself til recently...

The disney princesses, and classic fairytale girls.

And a former co-worker of mine. She had glorious tailbone-length, thick, shiny hair. She wore her hair up quite a bit; but would periodically take it down during the day in a dramatic head-toss-and-shake-my-hair-all-around type of way. It was awe-inspiring!

I was inspired by Alexander Krull, singer of the band Atrocity and husband of Leaves' Eyes singer Liv Kristine. I saw their bands' joint concert here in Perth, and his hair (about knee length -and he is TALL) wavy and gold, flaring out with the stage lights behind it was AMAZING. Almost angelic. That night in 2005 I said "I'm growing my hair" - and I didn't even trim it once for another two years.

I picture of myself before I cut my hair too short.
I saw how the length prevented the hair from puffing up, and realized that this is in fact the only way to go with a hair like mine. I recalled how a week after I cut my hair, a friend of mine said, "but why? I thought those long long hair locks that you had were so pretty", and right there I knew I made a mistake and I should undo the damage.

I've been umm-ing and ah-ing about growing my hair long over pretty much 3 years, but had my last hairdressers cut in feb 2007, but this year is when I pretty much started to get serious. My current hair inspiration is Per Wiberg from Opeth/Spiritual Beggars :D Although I want my hair longer than his, I just love his hair!

At the time I used to have a buzz cut every two weeks and I hated having to do it. Also, I had just started getting into the 80's thrash metal bands (Metallica, Megadeth, Testament) who all had long hair. I thought that it might be cool to have a go at growing my hair long to see how it turned out.

Heh, one of my current inspirations is people in skank pits at ska gigs with their hair flailing about. Of course, my hair's so thick that I can't wear it down to a gig if it isn't already damp (for instance one gig I went to after having been swimming in the afternoon) so as not to overheat.

I am also reminded every time I go to a ceilidh why I am growing my hair out, because it looks awesome flung out behind dancers, especially in such dances as Strip the Willow, and even more so in Orcadian Strip the Willow (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5t43sh44hCY).

Perhaps it was John Lennon and Yoko Ono when they started to grow their hair together as a ledge of love and peace...

Long hair is pace and love, determination, patience...

It is lifetime philosophy...

Long curls are gorgeous and I happen to be in possession of that type of hair. I got tired of spending money on dyes, trims, and highlights only to have damaged hair that needed a lot of products to look decent. I decided to embrace my curls, greys, and let it go natural from there. Much cheaper, healthier, and happier for me.

I've just always liked long hair. I can't even remember having short hair (although I know it was about shoulder length when I was a toddler).

When I was about 5-7 years old, I always HATED it when my mom would trim my hair. I'd throw huge temper tantrums:o. She wasn't even keeping it short, she just took off a 1/4 inch when the ends were splitting. Eventually, she gave up and quit trimming. It got to about hip-length by the time I was 12, but was very thin at the ends, because I didn't know how to take care of it gently.

I don't really know if anything in particular inspired me. I've just loved having long hair my whole life. :D

Currently, I'm inspired just about every time I see hair that's longer than waist length. On TV, here on LHC, in IRL...

Just wanted to point out that this isn't really khaleeji dancing. The part where they swing their hair from side to side IS part of our tradition, but the rest of it isn't. There is very little dancing involved and a lot more swinging of the hair. ^_^

I didn't really think it over when I decided to get my hair long, but haircuts had always bugged me.

One thing that helped was a few years before, when I was in year 8. One of the girls in my class had the best hair, and I had a thing for her. Blonde, straight and always perfect, then one day she went from BSL to short, and I was heartbroken. Dang she looked better before that.

When I was younger, it was a film, I think - princesses/beautiful women had these amazing long locks. But looking back, they were obviously wigs, lol. Anyway, I grew my hair long between 10 and say 25. Then for the next ten years I had it about shoulder length, although frequently it would grow longer because I could not be bothered to keep cutting. But because I didn't know I was a wurly, my hair tended to look frizzy and manky.

Then for the last five years i've kept it shoulder length and straightened about half the time, up the other half. THEN about five months ago, I wandered across this site, and gradually remembered that I liked long hair on me. It's like going back to my natural preferences, and letting my hair grow. I do like long hair, and for the first time EVER I have good hair most of the time, simply by pampering and let it be what it wants to be, rather than blow drying it straightish and hating the dry frizzy mess.

I do like long hair, always have done, but LHC has to take full responsibility for my decision to slowly grow out my hair!!

I'm with you, HarleyMama! Somehow I can never got stylists to do what I want, and once those scissors go snip, there's no turning back. I had been cutting my own hair for years before I decided to grow it out this time.

I've always liked that with long hair there are many different things you can do with it instead of just having the same style every day. I envied people with beautiful long hair, but had not been able to get mine to grow past that unpleasant intermediate stage where there is not much you can really do with it and it just hangs there, limp and in your eyes. Fortunately, I found LHC just as I was about to whack it off again because of dryness and breakage. My now much happier hair has grown nearly three inches beyond its previous terminal length, and looks to grow even longer - still not very long in comparison to others here, but very exciting for me!

I have had many hair idols over the years, most of whom are not at all famous. Just people I happened to know who looked absolutely lovely with that shining waterfall of hair down their backs. Wonderful.

This is really an interesting question. I have enjoyed reading all the different answers.

Trying to figure out what has inspired me to grow long hair is not easy. I don't think there is one thing. I hated getting my hair cut as a child. I especially hated mommma cutting my banges or fringe. She would never get it even and I would often end up with 1/2 long fringe at the top of my forehead. I hated that. Getting my hair cut at the salon was no easier. So part of growing long hair is to keep other people out of my hair!

I've always loved long hair and always had my hair wavering just above the BSL curly mark. I could never grow my hair beyond that mark before I came to the LHC who is providing me with the knowledge and the tools to hopefully grow my hair to waist. I never wanted to go down the path of getting extensions as I thought it would not be beneficial to my hair in the long run so I am now on the long path of patiently growing my curly hair to waist curly.

I wanted to hide my forehead and straighten it, and I wanted to feel more attractive.

Simple as that. Though now, looking back, I really think a lot of my inspiration might be book characters such as Kahlan, Denna, and Cara from the Sword of Truth Series and a lot of game characters, like Alucard from Castlevania, Terra and Celes of FF6, Tifa, etc. Now it's a lot of bands too, like members of Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, etc.

I've always loved long hair. People with long hair are always very interesting people to me. Any average person I know has short or medium hair. It's because it's classic, unique and mysterious. In fantasy, the gods and goddesses, heros and warriors are depicted with extravagant, long hair. Besides the fact that I look better with long hair, there is so much you can do with it and it keeps yoor back warm in the winter time =)

So man reasons, so litle time...

This question gets asked a lot but I don't mind answering again.

Another member here helped me realize my real reason. An abuser told me that I got so much attention from men because of my hair and if I just cut it off... It was a joke of course since at that time it was a Louise Brooks bob.

So I really began to grow it out in defiance. And then it began to fit with my dreams of being a mermaid and being more girly and so it's just a good fit with my lifestyle now. :cheer:

I've always had long hair my whole life, so i guess i never really decided myself. When i was a toddler mom wanted to see how long she could get my hair, and it just happened. I cut it once in middle school because it was the 'in' style, and i hated it. Then i decided to grow it back. I guess because its just 'me', its part of me, its who i am. I dont feel like a woman without it. Im SO close to classic length right now, im going to get there and maintain it. I love the way it looks and feels. Grandma always said its a womans (or mans too) crown and glory. I just love long hair.

Unhappiness after hacking mine off was partially the inspiration! I didn't realize how great my hair was, even with a bad wash routine, until I hacked it off, dyed it, and went crazy with the styling tools for the first time ever. Just not worth it. There is nothing remarkable about chin or shoulder length razored, layered, dyed, straightened hair. And it takes a boatload of time I don't have, doesn't flatter my face, and is fighting what my hair wants to naturally do. All bad things.

My husband was the one who started whining that my hair was shorter than his and he missed it. I just felt the urge to grow it. Then I was searching for more information on the OCM and LONGED for the lovely hair I saw in some signatures. I noticed the LHC was an offshoot of TBB and checked it out. I was hooked after the first page of siggies, I knew it was something I wanted to do again. I hated having to go to the salon every few months. I hated feeling like every day was a bad hair day. And I missed the days where everyone would compliment my hair and tell me how beautiful it was. Darn it, my postpartum, dowdy-housewife ego needs the stroking!

That's the long and short of it, anyway. I don't think I will ever have it shorter than BSL or waist again. My hair just isn't good short. Too voluminous, too wavy, too much, too fine. I am also waffling about going completely virgin, no henna this time. I know it looks FAB with henna, so I figure if I grow it out again I can ALWAYS henna later, but I'd like to see my natural color without the California sun.

well, moshpits and hair are actually pretty difficult in real life, because the hair gets stuck everywhere (the leather jacket of some dude next to you, or the security fence when you're in the front row etc)... far from glamorous! :eyebrows: plus when someone decides to pour their beer on your head in the process, you're doomed. forever. :D

I guess it is just part of who I am to have long hair.

When I was a child a woman who lived 2 houses from us was my babysitter. She watched me along with her 2 grandsons. She used to dress me and take care of my hair. When she moved away when I was about 7, my parents had zero experience taking care of hair (both have short hair -- would you believe my mother had no idea how to do any sort of braid at all) and decided it would be too much trouble and chopped it off. I was very upset. For years they just kept cutting it off, until finally when I was about 11 I persuaded them to give me a chance to show them I could take care of it. At that point, I also grew out my bangs.

I got a trim every few months from that point on, but no major cutting until I was 26 and found myself always putting it into a bun because it was too much hair to handle. So then I decided to cut it from below my butt to my waist. A few months later I still felt limited by how much hair I had, so I cut a bit more off. I've been kinda maintaining it at around the same length, which I measured today when wet and brushed to be 26". Of course when dry it curls up shorter than that.

I was tired of being lackadaisacle about my hair-care routine. My hair was truly suffering due to my abuse/neglect of it. I would abuse it by shampooing it excessively and then neglect to put conditioner on for a long enough time. My hair has always been around APL growing up and I noticed that with my continued abuse it was getting shorter and shorter. So fortunately I payed attention to that wake up call and now my hair is almost BSL .

I've ALWAYS said this, to which people's reply is "but what about<insert gorgeous girl's name>" ...it's their FACE and BODY that is remarkable...not their hair!* Imagine those girls with rapunzel locks! Even more amazing.

I'm not sure I can pinpoint anything specific, it's simply always held a certain level of appeal for me. Having to wait 20 years to "try it on" (due to insecurities of being male) gives it a bit of that diamond-like specialness as well ;)

Also, there's something timeless and almost otherwordly about it. For instance, look at some of the most popular vamps from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series...otherworldy, alluring guys, mostly with long hair. No elaboration needed in pointing out Lord of the Rings! Laurell K. Hamilton's 2 fantasy series, with more mysterious, long-haired, alluring men...hmmmmmm. At least for the men, it Seems to come across as this secret aspiration only to be appreciated in fantasy books and movies...but for some us, that ain't good enough! :D

Hmmmm, maybe I'm inspired to feel more alluring, mysterious, and otherworldy ;)

Kudos Rockkcor,

You've got nice, thick hair in your avatar. I like your anagram name too BTW. Very clevor. ;)

My motivation is that I've always loved long hair, hated haircuts as if they caused me physical pain and couldn't bear paying a sylist when they'd just ruined my hair by cutting off six inches when I asked for a trim. :( That's never happned to me since. I do my trimming myself and have had no hair cut disasters since.

My hair likes to be long.

I don't necessarily like long hair on everyone; I don't think that in general long is intrinsically better than short or anything like that.

But since I have thick, strong hair, and I had never had it very long, I decided to grow it out for Locks of Love. I grew it for three years, to about waist length, then chopped it back to the earlobes.

Short was fun, but I'm on the way back to long now. I just think the longer lengths make the most of my natural resources.

I saw an older picture of myself in hs and I was like.. "Why did I cut my hair?" I loved how it looked!

Also, I tried on a long hair clip I owned and really liked the way that it looked.. so much so, that I wore it off and on for a couple days, till my sister was like, " take that thing off your head, it looks ridiculous! Lol
But she did like my long hair :)

I can't wait for it to be long and my own! I was even tempted at getting hair extensions, but they cost alot of money and can damage the hair if not done properly... so I decided just to enjoy the experience and grow my hair out.

My 9-year-old son has shoulder-length hair, and I never questioned it. I think he has beautiful hair, and since my husband went bald at a young age, I think our son should enjoy his beautiful hair while he has it.

Grandparents were visiting and asked our son about his hair (it was a criticism disguised as an innocent question), "So, Ethan, what made you decide to grow your hair so long?" I expected our son to say something about Stickin' it to the man, or liking how it looks long, or how it fits his rock 'n roll bad boy image (he plays the drums). But our son just said, "I got tired of going to the barber all the time".

I think it is the comfort i have with my hair, it is something unique to me which i can try and make the best condition in possible, also i recognise that long hairers get so many intrigued onlookers who want to ask questions about the long hairers and their hair (I am an intrigued onlooker when I see a long hairer). Its interesting seeing whether they chose a non trimming or trimming approach. I dont even know why i get so much comfort from my hair because when i really think about it i remember that it IS JUST HAIR, but I do lol. It is also something that makes you different from every other schmoe you cross on the street.

When I was yonger my cousin said that as long as it would get was apl and it would break off if it got any longer. People don't think people with hair like mine can grow it long so I'm proving to myself and other's that it can. Plus I can't wait to be able to have super long twists and huge afros.

I've always wanted to be a princess. When I was a kid, though, I refused to take care of my hair, so I kept yo-yoing from chin-length hair to elbow-length hair. Now that I'm a wee bit older and wiser, I've decided to go for that princess look again--this time by pampering my locks the whole way!

I want waist length silver hair, it's that simple.

Basically, I want to look like a witch and play up my already exotic, retro looks. Since you are supposed to cut your hair when you get older, I plan on doing the exact opposite of this. And I plan on wearing it in braids, too.

Oh, and I love the look of blonde-fading-into-silver; a friend of mine has a similar hair color but is ten years older than me, and I love how it compliments her light eyes and ruddy complexion. Something wise, earthy, and strong in that.

Locks of Love, really. A Mom from my son's little league team was growing hers the summer of 2007 (she's since cut it off to a bob style) and that thought never really crossed my mind. I had resigned myself to very short hair cause it's thinning on the top and short makes it look thicker. But ya know, it's not all that bad looking. I may have to grow it much longer before donating; I'm really enjoying the length now. It's addicting.............:eyebrows:

I've almost always had bsl-waist hair- and I just look better with it that way-never thought about it otherwise.

However,my hair is thin and fine, has a tendency to become "stringy" looking, and I get split ends like crazy. The only thing I really know how to do with it is throw it up in a ponytail. So every so many months I would get my hair cut to keep it at a medium length- and since I didn't know how to do any styles I would change my look through cutting my hair.

I was actually contacted by a friend via myspace when I asked an opinion on a new hair cut I was scheduled for. She linked me to some pictures on this forum to convince me not to cut my hair, but because I wasn't a member I couldn't see them- and my email address is with aol. Needless to say I got my haircut and it was a terrible mistake.
The next day I created a new email and joined- really just to look around.

LadyMoon11's hair is what made me want to grow mine. It was so soft looking with so much shine and such a beautiful shade of red.

I have always wanted to have long hair since a child and always hated having haircuts "because boys should have short hair".

In my mid teens I did grow it out to just below collar length aka as "the awkward stage" but my hair was real thick and curly with frizz and I didn't know how to look after it and it ended up a mess with split ends. I hacked it off after 18 months when the weather got real humid. So over many years I went through this cycle, having short hair in summer and growing long in winter with a haircut every 9 months or so until nearly a year ago I decided that I would stick it out and grow it out to whatever length that the hair would grow too before it was too late.

I have always admired long hair as it is a natural look, and want to enjoy having fun with longer hair as it grows out. It's not only growing out hair but a journey of self-discovery too. Plus I have always disliked bland conformity -

And the sensuality associated with the feel of long hair, along with it's spiritual aspects plus having an ingrained longhair identity has contributed to this desire to grow long hair. It's now on the cusp of shoulder length - it's been an exciting (but slow) last 12 months -

I have enjoyed reading the other posts here too on this topic.

If you do decide to donate, I'd recommend not going through LOL, as they're a bit of a shady business. If you run a search here you'll come up with loads of threads about how the amount of hair it gets doesn't add up to the number of wigs they produce, they sell a lot of hair if it isn't top standard, they don't give wigs to kids with cancer (not that there's anything wrong with selling wigs to kids with alopecia, just that there's this belief they give them free to kids with cancer, which they don't), etc. There are other organisations that are probably a better avenue to go down should you choose to donate your hair.

I hope I'm not sounding preachy here or anything, it's just that there are a lot of misconceptions about LOL by the people doing the donating and others, and it's best to have your facts right before you go ahead and do something like that. :flower:

One time, when I was a really little thing, I was at a Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena. There was this one woman who had hair literally down to the floor. I seriously pointed at her and went, "Look Mom! Her hair is so long! It's so pretty! She looks like a princess!", super loud as only children can muster. My Mom was so embarrassed. I ran over and asked if it was her real hair then told her how pretty it was when she said it was. I always wanted hair like hers. As I've grown older, I've found I want longer hair for the shear amount of things you can do with it as well. If you have short hair you're really limited to a handful of styles. With long hair, especially super long hair, the sky is the limit. So I decided to grow it out and started doing it once I hit college.

The movie "Mongol" made me realize how much I missed my hair. All that beautiful asian stick straight hair in braids or blowing loose in the wind (insert Homer Simpson donut lust sound here) . . .

Hi! My hair is quite short at the moment -- I'm growing out my hair from a very short cut this past summer and the top layers of my hair are probably only 7 or 8 inches long. However, I've always loved long hair ever since I was a little girl. I had a favorite teacher when I was in first grade with the most beautiful long, thick hair, and I remember playing with her hair, and actually feeling rather traumatized once when I thought she was going to get her hair cut off, and skipping school for a couple of days because I was so upset at the prospect of that!!! I was THAT upset!!!

Anyway -- I'm definitely going to grow my hair out again now. I enjoyed my short hair for awhile and got a lot of compliments on it, but it just isn't ME if that makes sense. I don't feel like myself w/out my long hair -- shorter hair doesn't seem to suit my personality somehow. I thought it would be fun to get some motivation for getting through the "awkward stage" by starting this thread. :D So.....did anyone or anything in particular inspire you to grow out your hair?

Same here.

I had long hair most of my life, and I really miss it. When I got to high school, I started cutting it shorter and shorter. I went from waist length to about chin length in two years... I liked how it looked on me, but I just didn't feel like myself at all.

I really love Amy Lee's hair (Evanescence). It's absolutely gorgeous. She's my long hair idol. :p

Back in the 70's there was some products that had long hair girls (yes I know all products had long hair girls on them). I might have been nice and easy or some hair color or conditioner. The girls had waist to hip length hair. One girl had long dark hair to her hips and I was bewitched.
I waited till I was 42 though to start. I am a late bloomer.

Definitely Princess Leia. I think I already was growing my hair out before I saw Star Wars, but I vividly remember seeing Return of the Jedi for the first time and thinking, "That's how long her hair is? I can get mine longer than that!" So my hair goal is, basically, to have better hair than Princess Leia. I will never achieve this, because I don't have a team of makeup artists and the option of redoing the scene again if it turns out I had too much frizz, but it's nice to have a goal.

I actually had the opposite, sort of...my mum, gran, and sister kept their hair relatively short (shoulder or above, chemically dyed, etc...) so I wanted to do something different. I never liked that look, and long hair felt more like me, and I feel more like me the longer it gets. I'm a long way off, but its coming slowly but surely :)

I saw Olivia Hussey in Franco Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet when I was 14 and have wanted long hair ever since. I did have long hair in the 70's but never past hip. Then I wore it short for about 15 years. At the age of 40, with a new, supportive hubby, I decided to see how long it would grow.

Cher from the 70's! Loved her black straight shiny hair. And as a child...All my dolls had long hair and seemed like the longer their hair, the better they were. Made me imagine my hair being long too.

Me too - I loved Cher's hair in the 70s. I would have sold my soul to the devil to have that hair. haha Also, my grandmother had long hair (hip length braids), and I loved to comb it when I was young. I have this idea in mind about my granddaughter wanting to comb my long hair, but she doesn't very often. She doesn't like for me to put it up, though.

Put me on the Cher train as well. I also blame her for my addiction to sequins, beading, and anything sparkly. Add to my long hair idols Crystal Gayle (my mom had one of her albums and I used to stare at it all the time wishing I could be so glamorous) and more recently Jane Seymour. Even though my hair is now longer than Jane's, the fact that she continues to be awesome and classy and rocking the long locks at her age just proves that you don't have to be "young" to have long hair.

I cut my hair short, inverted bob, back in 2005, and maintained until Jan 2006 when I decided I really missed my hair. It has been growing since, and am now approaching waist. My inspiration was old pics of me with longer hair. And then I was inspired by the horrendous pics of my in-between length hair from 06. I was like "OMG I need to grow past this its aweful!" and strangely enough that was when everyone was trying to tell me to cut it again. Awkward length sucks.

I have never forgotten the image of my Grandmother - a thick black braid down below her knees against the white sheet of her (nursing home) bed with just a very few sprinkles of silver at the temple. She died when I was 4 or 5.

Then I must confess - Cher, Crystal Gayle, Jaclyn Smith & Farah Fawcett from Charlies Angels, Lindsey Wagner the Bionic Woman and of course Jane Seymour.

Recently: The women here at the forum - esp. the Silver Threads. What an inspiration to begin at any age! :) I've always become frustrated somewhere in the neck/shoulder area - usually due to damage of some sort - and cut it. I think being indoors more the past 3 years has kept it protected so it wasn't in need of a good cut! Now I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my vitees to get seriously growing! After all, next year, I have a 35 year class reunion coming up. My class "10 year prophecy" stated I would finally find my true hair color. Not having seen many classmates, I would like to have it as long and healthy as possible by then! :D

Long story short, I was lost with my hair looked so awful, & one day googled, long hair & found "the long hair loom" & up on the top of the site was a woman named Avilon who had updo's posted. That did it for me, I wanted that hair, although I have a different texture, I had never seen anything so gorgeous.

Unfortunately I listened to a lot of so called well meaning people explaining to me why I was too old for it & chopped if off not once, but twice!!! But no more, this time I will have long hair!

Don't you just HATE 20/20 hindsight! I've always love the Gibson up-do's. I have the Grey Cloud Graphics 6 or 9 print collection - a Cmas request several years ago. I have 3 of them up. I love the soft, femine look of that era. DH bought a beer sign at a swap (gift 4 me!:D) just for the lady in red with a beautiful Gibson up-do. I almost kept my hair short, until I met my husband in 2005. We hung out for a few months before actually dating and by the time we were dating I was growing my hair out. He loves long hair, and everytime I talk about possibly cutting my hair short again he just looks disappointed. Like he's not going to stop me from doing it if I really want to. But you can tell her doesn't want me to. If it weren't for him my hair would be no where near the length it is now. And after a week of deciding whether I'm going to cut my hair to APL or not, I've decided to keep it as it is. And I love the decision my husband helped me make. I think I'd be sad if I couldn't curl my hair like I can now(when its short curls dont hold).

I started growing my hair back out after the Boot Camp "chop". And I was also my own inspiration... I'd had it waist-length when that cut happened, and had also had waist-length hair in high school. Long hair almost all my life!

I was going to cut it really really short again but then re-considered. When I found this forum again after two years I *definitely* reconsidered and have been happily growing again!

I am fairly new to LHC but have been "lurking" for over a year. I started growing my hair from 2-1/2" in July '07 and ( lots of tiny trims later) it is now shoulder length. A 60s college roomate was my 1st inspriation (classic) & her hair is still at least waist & she doesn't cut it. But the biggest push lately was a California friend my age who let hers grow, probably to BSL, & wears it up. She said it was so easy. I knew I needed inspiration & advice to get through the awkward stages so I found all of you & read almost daily. Thanks for all the help! My goal is BSL or maybe longer.

Welcome Superfine :D Lurking a year? Holy cow! I lurked for three months only cause I could not decide on a user name. Seriously it was because of that. :crazyq:
You will have lots of support here. :cheer:

Ditto. I am growing partly because of my part-Cherokee. :)

(And I love your avatar. "Last of the Mohicans" is one of my favorite movies of all time.)

THANK YOU my inspiration!!!!!!

Agnetha from ABBA was my first :thud:. But I didn't realise just how long her hair had been from 1970 to 1973 (http://www.raffem.com/images/Abba3/svtpeo3.jpg) until the 1980's. But by that time I'd convinced myself that such long hair would never happen for me. I kept this belief until April 2008 when I joined LHC!! Now the dream is alive for me once again!

Oh and Maureen McCormack and Eve Plumb (Marcia and Jan Brady (http://www.bradybunchshrine.com/bradybunch/Pictures/Pictures2/bbpinkgrls.jpg)).

There are lots of topics that get posted every 3 weeks, as new folk show up to enjoy LHC. I guess I don't respond to the duplicated ones that I don't find fun or interesting, and I do respond to the ones I do..

I'm sure those topics that have been flogged to death will sink pretty fast and be out of the way, and if the duplicated threads continue to stay at the top, I suppose people are still interested enough in the subject to post about it.

I would have to say Jane Seymore and Crystal Gayle. They both had/have such beautiful hair. I haven't cut mine in 4 yrs now and it's finally to my waist. I was watching an old "Dr Quinn" last week and was thrilled to see that my hair is now LONGER then hers!!!!

Seriously? The people who got me thinking about it were the FLDS women when the big raid was on TV.

Somehow I'd gotten the idea that only a small, special percentage of the population could grow long hair... but here was this whole freakin' community of long-haired ladies.

(I'll pass on the prairie dresses, though. And the polygamy. And anything having to do with Warren Jeffs.)

I love Jane Seymours hair also. I have been watching the series of Dr. Quinn from NetFlix. I am on the last DVD, so I am sad about that. I wish that there was more to watch. She has the prettiest hair in that series. Love her long hair!
I don't think that my hair will ever get that long - mainly because my DH would probably get the sissors & cut it, haha. I try to keep it up around him as it is now & it is just 22" long.

Wow! For the heck of it, I googled "extreme long hair" to see what I'd find. Check out the braids in #2; The length of #6 - sitting on bed & 11 - a balcony shot!

I posted that photo here and at TLHS.

As an old movie fan, I must mention Veronica Lake. I wouldn't exactly say she inspired me to grow my hair long, but her look is definitely an inspiration for maintaining beautiful long hair. I love Rita Hayworth's hair, too, although often it was only moderately long.

At the time I started to grow my hair I listened to a lot of thrash metal. I was very inpsired by the guitarists (being a guitar player myself) and the image was pretty cool too. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was a very big inspiration in particular.

When my hair was still short, I was deciding whether I was gonna let it grow or keep it short. I had a concave bob, which means the hair in front is longer than the hair in the back (back was nape length, front was slightly longer than chin). But my boyfriend remembered me when my hair was still long (before he was my bf) and he loved that. So I'm guessing that was the trigger :)

Inspired me to grow long hair? Dr. George Michael himself! I've always *admired* long hair, but he totally inspired me and taught me how to appreciate my own hair, which is why I've decided to grow it long.

Yes, my mother who forbid me to cut and I did at 18 and never grew it back out again until now. Also, pics of my ggrandmother. She had the most beautiful long hair. Hell, in fact, most of my family has/had WL or longer. I'm doing mine for cultural reasons. Plus, I miss all that hair I had as a younger child. Scissors are the devil!

It's going to sound like a cliche, but I must say that you, lovely people of LHC forum, inspired me to grow my hair again.
Let me tell you the story: I was ill in bed this last april. I got the flue and I had to stay at home for a few days. After a full day looking for some information about henna dye, a link got me to this forum. I started to read the posts and I found a sea of very useful information that I didn`t know when I have long hair. That's when I decided to re grow my hair. I had a major cut in October 2008, after my wedding. My big mistake was keeping the haircut for such a long time (a bob with some layers). The best part is that I am now really taking care of my hair, spoiling it every time.
So, I have to thank this wonderful community of long hair lovers. Your pictures and posts are truly inspiring

When I was 16 in 1997 I had this boyish really short mop. Then I went to see Titanic...and that's when I remember first time wanting a long hair. I still think she's one the most beautiful actresses around but I really preferred her with the English Rose look, pale with big red lips and a head full of flowing red curls. Oh Yes, that's the moment. Since then it's been everywhere between a middle-neck bob and barely-there waist length, but I've never again wanted to go short.

I had hair past classic-length before I turned 11 and cut it for the first time in my life. It has never been above waist length before. Ever low-maintenance, I would grow it to around tailbone-length then chop it to waist and start the process over again. When it got to hip for the last time (2009) I was having issues with breakage and found the LHC in my quest to improve my hair's condition.

During my 11-now phase, I had seen women with hair past classic before, but it never occurred to me to try to grow MY hair to such lengths. However, the exact moment I saw someone's signature picture with hair to their knees (it might have been Cinnamon Hair, actually) I decided I wanted longer hair. Not necessarily knee length...but at least mid-thigh! I hardly remember what the thread was about now...I just know that I saw inspiring length and wanted to achieve it too!

I've always had long hair. My mother would just let my hair grow and only cut a bit of the ends every few months. I was always the girl with the long, golden hair and, luckily, none of my family members ever wanted me to be any different.
When I was 16 or17 I thought that it was about time to try a shorter hairstyle, although I always loved my long hair. Oh, the twists and turns of adolescence. My mother gently tried to keep me from doing that, suggesting different hairstyles that would keep more of my lengths, or another color.... To no effect.

My short hair enthusiasm went by rather quickly, though. When I began to let my hair grow out again, I guess I had no real goal and no particular inspiration exept from my former self, maybe.

But I had always dreamed of having classical length, adoring every woman I saw who had such hair (mostly in movies and on pictures). I thought I would never reach that, because in the past my hair didn't go beyond waist due to the regular trims. Now I've reached classic and a bit more. A small dream that has come true. I am sure I will never again cut my hair. It's just who I am and always was.

Myself! I want to grow my hair longer than I have ever had it.

I also screwed around with my hair too much when it was at it's longest (just below bsl I'd say) so I had to chop it off to my chin, and since then, I gotten quite a few trims due to remaining damage, and now in the past few months I've been focusing on growing it. :)

My SIL used to have waist-length hair and one day I saw it when she had just rolled out of bed and it was stick straight and kinda messy and I thought it was sooo beautiful. I have always given up and cut my hair when it got to "that annoying stage" just below the shoulders but I have pushed through it this time and I'm almost at APL!!

Am I the only weird one who had a hair inspiration to motivate me to grow my hair long? It's always so tempting to cut my hair and I knew that if I didn't have something to motivate me, I would have cut it. I REALLY love looking on Pinterest at women with beautiful long silky hair. I also really like watching this woman on youtube. Her name is Gia and her hair is amazing. Never tried the oil, and don't plan to...but her hair is absolutely beautiful.

So I was wondering if you had a hair inspiration to motivate you?

It is a colleague of mine who inspires me. She has such absolutely wonderful hair - almost completely jet black, thick and with the slightest hint of wave. As she is of Indian origin I am afraid that most of the secrets to her marvellous hair lie in her DNA but she just gave me the initial desire to have long hair; a desire that has lain dormant for a loooooooong time.

But my motivation is me and then others.i wanna grow my hair to prove i can and oh i wanna sit on my hair and say ouch! someday.I also wanna prove to those around me that a life tied down with extensions amd relaxers and esteem issues without them does not have to be.you can choose.

Plenty of people on the LHC and lots of anonymous heads of hair on Pinterest (my hair board is embarrassingly large), but ever since someone here compared this painting (Mariana in the South by Waterhouse) to my hair it's been my inspiration. I think/hope that my hair will look similar at classic.

I take a lot of inspiration from Tolkien's work. I just love the elves of Middle Earth and I'd love to have hair as long, healthy and free-flowing as them. For that reason, any length at which I won't be able to wear it down regularly anymore is not an option fro me. :)
Another inspiration is beautyklove on youtube, who I've just found recently and whose hair is absolutely glorious.

Disney princesses are definitely my first true inspiration. My favorites all had gorgeous hair - Belle, Ariel, Pocahontas. Also, the character of 'Danielle' in 'Ever After' - I had so much hair envy when I first saw that!

Real-life inspiration is torrinpaige on YouTube without a doubt. Every time I'm frustrated with my hair and think that I can't do anything with it, I just watch one of her videos.

My inspiration are all the lovely ladies in the AA hair blogosphere, and those I met on various other forums. They are the ones who showed me I could grow my hair longer than neck length which I thought was the typical length for anyone of African descent. Now to spread the word to others :)

My first hair inspiration was Emichiee.
I came across her blog a few years ago when I realized how damaged my hair was due to constant hairdyeing. I used to dye my hair to red since high school and as a consequence, it started breaking.. the breakage had to be cut.. so I couldn't keep my hair longer than apl/bsl anymore.
When I was a child, I had beautiful waist length hair. I wanted it back. So I started my research and while reading about henna, I found Emi's blog :) Once she wrote about a site full of long haired people - that's how I came to lhc. And my journey began :)
