So, I got my Elymwold customs today and I was looking for the thread to spam with pictures... and I realised there's no thread about this store!!! (or is there and did I just miss it???)

This can't be, so I decided to make one...

Have you got any Elymwold (http://www.etsy.com/shop/Elymwold) pretties? Do you want some? Do you just want to drool over other people's hair-toys? Come and share!

These sticks are very, very high-quality. The materials (various types of wood, acrylic and burls) are excellent, and the finish is the high-gloss, glass-like finish of MtMs or TTs or Graydogs. Prices as HIGHLY reasonable. Nigel is a very nice person to deal with and has excellent customer service, and though he's all the way in Australia, shipping is fast and not at all expensive.

Here are mine...

First of all, the packaging is lovely. Can you spot the kangaroos? And it's super-secure too!

It's silver ash and amber acrylic, with a band of Tasmanian blackwood in between.

I really can't say enough good things about this seller. Lovely in communication, beautiful top quality workmanship - I'd love to see him explore some burls, especially dyed burls. :crush:

The sticks look gorgeous and I'm particularly impressed with your watermark - it looks pretty but must be devilishly difficult for a would-be photo-thief to contend with.

Lovely stick in a gorgeous bun! I also love burls for their soft, organic quality and the way they take dye so beautifully so if he moves in that direction I will be putty ...

Beautiful sticks everyone! His work really is outstanding. I have one too and although it's gorgeous the one I chose matches my hair color too closely, so I'll probably end up swapping it at some point and get one in a different color. If he does dyed burls I'm definitely in!:)

Oh no, I don't have an action photo of his stick, I'll have to get one after washing and putting up my hair tomorrow! But yes, my Elymwold stick is by far my favorite, perfectly seamless , smooth like butter yet holds like nobody's business! I'll be purchasing from him in the future again for sure! That burl-topped stick is singing its siren song to me!

Um, what's a burl?
It's a knot on a tree, probably caused by damage to the tree, or some kind of infection, where the tree grows in an abnormal manner. Burlwood tends to have spectacular and unusual grain patterns, which makes it popular for decorative applications, like hairsticks. :)

Boo, I love all of those, but particularly the first one... is it a burl? I love the shape!

Lissandria, glad we enabled you! We'll wait for your action pics impatiently...
(btw, I think the last stick of Boo's is purpleheart with a purple acrylic topper... I *might* have drooled over it before it was sold! :o)

Oops- the first stick is Claret ash and rose myrtle burl; the second is flame sheoak and black glitter acrylic resin; the third is blackwood and amber acrylic resin; and the last is Purpleheart and purple acrylic resin (with a silver ash inlay). I actually have two more I don't have pictures of yet! I am a real fan of his work - I cannot say enough good things about him.

Oh, dfotw, the purpleheart was a custom I asked him for that is a replica of one he had in the shop that was too long for me. So somewhere out there is a version that would work with your glorious hair! (Although I am sure he could remake one for you as well.....)

I have a question. How frequently does he stock his store? Is this something I need to check alot...? Also alot of finer haired lovelies are on here, so can I assume these are too heavy or slippery for finer, thinner hair. The workmanship looks superb.

Fairly regularly, but things go very, very quickly. Your best bet if you keep missing them is scout out designs and wood/topper combinations in the Sold section that you really love, and wait until he's accepting customs again to get one just for you. :)

They are also incredibly light, and you're right about the workmanship; it's flawless.

Aw that's pretty too.

Dang it, I did not need a new seller in my favourites list!

Tell me about the finish, how does it feel? I'm guessing it doesn't really feel like wood with all that cyanoacrylate, but is it like acrylic, or piano keys or what?

Wow... your question is very hard to answer, esp since I don't have the words in Eng...

It feels very very smooth and yet not slippery. It's grippy! Shocking, yes?

Not "piano-y", but I think only because I'm a very tactile person and "piano-y" is a quality that's not only the finish, but also the bulkiness of the keys and the weight of the wood.

It's hard, unscratchable by nails, shiny, smooth. I'd say, if you didn't know it was wood and you knock it with your nails, it's even a little "glassy", some extremely lightweight glass, LOL.

Knocking them together... yes, glassy.

That's nice, I really liked that one!

Here are my two babies, just because I'm so bored so I took a pic with the point-and-shoot. The first one was the purpleheart (https://www.etsy.com/transaction/91577690). Interesting how much thinner the cocobolo (https://www.etsy.com/transaction/93215963) is, even though there is only 12 mm / 0.5" difference in length. I wish it had been longer/fatter too, but I couldn't resist the grain. It's my shortest stick so far (158 mm).

Good grief Cathy, I have forgotten how your sticks are so beautiful. I have been loving his stuff lately. So it was you who got those cypress/silkwood sticks, Diva! They're beautiful and I shall be lying in wait for action shots to be posted. :)

I have to say I'm totally infatuated with the African blackwood/white top burl pair (you're right, those are TOTALLY me!) and I can't wait for them to show up! Unfortunately the post seems to have slowed down due to Christmas congestion and I'm not holding out much hope of getting them in time for Christmas. Not that that's stopping me from stalking the postman, though... :D

Yes it was not a custom of course but I had convoed him about liking the first wavy top stick set and mentioned how lovely that maple silk wood was if he were to happen to make another set. So I am lucky he decided to make a set. I expect them to be very awesome.

I asked for one of these (http://www.etsy.com/transaction/126491767?), but with four prongs and the birch burl at the top dyed dark blue instead of green. He agreed! And for anyone who's wondering about wait times on custom stuff, he said he was a bit concerned about getting it to me before early June (which was my initial time frame), so be warned that custom orders from Nigel are not going to be instant gratification purchases.

So excited! :disco:

Might I ask Nightblooming and Cathy, or anyone else who has some of the ebony forks he's recently offered, in what general range your forks were?? What do you mean, $$$? About the same as every other wood AFAIK. (I saw ebony forks selling in the past and they cost exactly the same as any other.) Nigel is playing fair, unlike... Gah, don't get me started. I have to add that I don't have any ebony forks yet, just in the works, and honestly I didn't even ask about the price of the wood because I expected a higher cost because of the metal inlays. (IDK the price yet.)

Thanks for your reply Cathy. His prices are already SO reasonable. I haven't seen any of the Ebony forks listed in his shop until after they were sold, so I had no idea how much they went for. I do know that ebony is a VERY dense wood, and harder to work with than some others, and that it is exotic, so costlier than some other woods. I've seen other sellers raise prices exponentially just based on ebony, so I wasn't sure.

The fork you designed is stunning! I hope mine turns out just as amazing when it comes to fruition.

Cathy, your custom is absolutely amazing.

I've a question regarding Elymwold forks - what's the finish like compared to Grah-Toe, for those who own both? Because I love my GTS fork, but my hair doesn't. It's like it isn't glassy enough; I have a really, really hard time getting it to go through my hair. I adore the look of Nigel's forks, but I'm afraid to get another fork that won't work!

Yes, this is a completely different kind of finish, actually almost unbelievable that it's wood. With a straight stick that has no bumps on it (all my sticks have) and slippery hair (which I don't have), I could imagine it being too slippery actually. A fork couldn't be too slippery though, I would think, and let me add that Nigel's forks have the best head curve so far I've seen. Also you can ask for a full head curve (the topper and the tines all in one continuous curved line).

Get a Nigel fork with confidence! You won't regret it.

Okay, our mission is completed here... another victim sucked in! Bwahahhhahaha! :rollin:

I have heard folks saying that somehow his ebony forks are not that heavy. Now I don't know how that's possible; probably the shape is optimized to the extent that the total volume is less than that of a, for example, GTS fork (because my 3-prong Katalin fork doesn't look particularly slender and it's a 6.5" fork... and it is surprisingly light -- the wood is camphor laurel). I should get my ebony fork by the the second week of June, if my stone reaches him on time, that is -- if you don't decide about yours until then, I can give feedback.

I'm thinking of asking for a more petite version of this (http://www.etsy.com/transaction/126782417), possibly sans glitter - a topper at 3.25 inches is just to wide for me, but if it's possible to do a slimmer version at something like 2.5 inches that could probably work well.

And thanks, I 'll keep that in mind! If I've waited this long, I should be able to hold off for another few weeks. ...Maybe. When it comes to deciding on new hairthings I tend to be all about instant gratification, heh!

Half of the world got their Katalin forks before me. But it's probably because half of the world actually paid before me. :p I was broke. :p

The first one sold back in January and so quickly that Nigel couldn't even name it yet because he was waiting for my reply to do so. :p After that, many sold, maybe 6-7+ and also a few of the Katalin pairs by the time I got mine :rollin: in late February, or first days of March, I don't remember.

Oh! I didn't know the whole shape was your design. How awesome. I thought you'd only designed the one that has the silver inlay and a set cabochon. He let me name my design too, so soon enough the Calaelen fork will hit the shop:) but I hope I get mine first :p

I don't know if the one with the stone will have my name too, because frankly I don't consider it a new design. It's just a wavy fork with a bit of a twist. But then again he said he came up with the wavy fork because of the Katalin fork. And the Katalin fork was inspired by this one: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/106578731

So basically he inspired me to come up with the Katalin design after I purchased the fork above. Then he started to play with the inlays and realized he can do so much more than he himself thought of trying before, and told me that Katalin inspired the wavy forks.* Then the wavy forks inspired the one with the stone.

*Although I think he probably exaggerated here, because I would think the wavy is much closer to his first forks with the straight inlay :) but it felt good anyway, for my huge EGO. :heartbeat :rollin: http://i.imgur.com/uB8uBBM.gif http://i.imgur.com/R65VO7E.gif

Now I want to hear the Calaelen story. :rollin: And a little something about it because I'm curioussss.

Cathy, really cool that the Katalin was your design! :D

Well, guess who caved? *g* It's going to be a smaller version of the ebony fork with the dyed burl topper, with a different inlay - Nigel said that since the burl is lightweight, the fork shouldn't be too heavy with ebony. He also said he's currently making another custom wave top fork with the width I suggested (maria_asa, perhaps that's yours, heh?) so he's going to show me the pictures of that when it's finished and we'll see if there are any alterations I want done with the proportions. You guys were right, he's really nice to work with!

:) it must have been great for your ego to design a fork and have others inspired by it. Mine is inspired by the wave design, it will be four pronged 7 inches total, and I call it a double wave. I shaped the top design, and there is something else really neat and new about the Calaelen, but we're all going to have to wait for the mock up to be made before I let that leak ;)

I've got something brewing here too...

Plus, TWICE now I've convoed him about an idea about replicating something for my wish list, and he's been like "Oh, will this one do?" And it's already made before I've asked, ready, and perfect. That's how I got my green burl/ ebony set... And one more... that is to come. (Soon)
I really am beginning to suspect some kind of Aussie magic.

That lovely will be riding along with my other wish list idea that is yet to be finished and seen... and I HOPE is as wonderful as it is in my mind.

Calaelen
May 16th, 2013, 12:26 PM
Now that I have solidified my design and Nigel and I have agreed that July is an ideal time to have my fork ready, I am DYING to see it come to fruition, dying to get it in my hands...How am I going to handle the wait?? LOL. Diva, is your wishlist idea a new design? Or different colours woods ect for existing ones?? I am telling you right now, to save some money for a copy of The Calaelen, because you in particular are going to go nuts for it. ;)

Wildcat Diva
May 16th, 2013, 10:35 PM
Oh my goodness Calaelen! You're calling me out? Now you've really got me a bit...flustered. July is a long wait. I won't lie, I've been wondering too about your fork. I'll start saving my money. Or selling some stuff on swap.

My other wish list item was a copy of some of the other forks he's made. Of the wave top variety, elm topped with burl filled with Lapis, with accents of black wattle surrounding a layer of silk oak with a silver squiggle. He just happened to have one laying around that he hadn't listed when I asked about it. (I won't have it right away, I'm waiting on something else to ship along with it.) The something else, you'll just have to wait and see, it's not a new shape or design.

Ooh, I just received my latest (https://www.etsy.com/listing/153310744/a-wave-top-hair-fork-in-figured-maple) fork today. Only 7 days to get here! I immediately put it up in a very messy bun. Another gorgeous piece! (And no, I didn't break off a prong... it's just hiding in my hair somehow! :p)

Thank you both so much! Kaelee- did your fork come today? Theobroma- yes, it is figured maple. It looks a bit more orange in my pic than in real life. It's definitely gorgeous in person! :)

It did come today!!!! I had a hard time getting a good action shot, this is the best I could do at the moment:

I can't believe how light it is!!! And that curve seems to make a huge difference in comfort, I haven't worn it long enough to know about hold. I'm guessing the weight will make a big difference in hold as well.

Does anyone have any experience with cocobolo or the dyed birch burl fading/discoloring in sunlight? I don't plan to store the fork where it's exposed to light of course, but I just want to know how careful I have to be.

Cocobolo will actually darken over time rather than fade. I would worry about fading more with the dyed burl. Any time a wood is dyed, fading will occur eventually to some extent, so I would keep it out of light for extended periods. Luckily, Nigel finishes his pieces very well, but I would be a bit cautious nonetheless.

Good to know!!! I'm wearing it now...walked to the store and got groceries, walked back...it has not even BUDGED in my hair. I think the curve and weight makes a HUGE difference. I love this fork!

Omg that looks gorgeous in your hair. :flower: The graining absolutely compliments your hair. Too bad that wave style won't work for me as I can't get forks to work for me.
But I can do one stick updos, and the fact that i'm in love with my recent acquisition... Still though I've been thinking of an acrylic piece lately but haven't had the time to really decide...

That really sucks. :( If you get the hang of that flipped updo I posted a few days ago, try a fork with that, if you have one.

MY bright red orange cocobolo fork (60th street) darkened A LOT within a few months, it's kept in a dark room with little light. I probably wore it once. Not sure how the finish on the Elymwold might affect darkening. That dark red actually looks pretty cool on my fork at least. I'm sure whatever happens, your fork will remain just beautiful.

Wow, I had no idea this shop carried such gorgeous pieces!!! I definitely will be eyeing this shop. What's the usual shipping wait to the US? I'm going to browse through the "sold" section and make a wishlist. :)

You know what, now that I look at my fork next to Nigel's pictures on Etsy, I think my fork has ALREADY darkened quite a bit...but I like it better! It's gotten more red. Very pretty!

Here (http://www.etsy.com/transaction/134220030?) it is originally.

I just got my latest (https://www.etsy.com/listing/154285086/a-pair-of-mini-wave-hair-forks-handmade) goodies from Nigel. It is a beautiful pair of forks, plus he sent along a little traveling companion for them:
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k24/ohiolisa06/mini_wave_green2_zpsdb6ebc6e.jpg (http://s84.photobucket.com/user/ohiolisa06/media/mini_wave_green2_zpsdb6ebc6e.jpg.html)

I absolutely love them, as usual. But, I honestly don't know that I will ever be able to use the forks together, so one of them might end up on the swap board. Anyone here want to swap mini forks? :eyebrows:

Don't split them up too soon -- I suspect you'll be able to wear them as a pair when you have enough length, which does bulk up a bun.

It looks lovely in your hair, BTW -- the woods were a perfect choice for your colour!

Have you considered making a paranda to wear them with?

If you check the paranda thread, nightblooming had a paranda made to match her hair color to bulk up her braided bun, and also an accent braided headband!

Also, if you do a braided bun with two braids (poofed out?) looped around each other, that can give you more bun area to work with.

If you really decided you wanted to destash one, I'd take it. I'd even sell it back to you if you changed your
mind later on and wanted to reunite the set.

I'd take it in a heartbeat if it had another inch of functional length.
I plan on asking for a single (long) mini fork as soon as he's accepting requests again. I think one would work fine for my skinny TBL hair.
