View Full Version : How fast does your hair grow?

I am convinced that the common opinion that it is not possible to grow hair more than 1/2 inch a month is based on people who aren't trying to grow their hair and are not treating it with the special care that most of us here at LHC do. Maybe I'm wrong... My hair grows 3/4 inch a month when I take my high doses of biotin and I massage my scalp regularly. Not brushing helps ALOT, too. I was wondering if anyone has super fast growing hair and if so, what are your washing/care techniques and also do you take any vitamins or herbs to help growth? I'm excited to hear your opinions and recommendations!

^^ Your hair is growing fast, good for you! (:
My hair doesn't grow even half an inch in a month. I should buy biotin vitamins again, they helped my nails to get better, but I can't remember what it did to my hair (it must have effected some how). My hair grows really slowly.

My hair has always grown like a weed. I usually get about an inch per month, but there have been times that I have measured it as being more, but I attribute that to incorrect measurements. The least my hair has grown in one month was about 0.75". It has always grown this fast, even with extreme stress and poor diet.
I'm not taking any supplements at the moment, namely because I cannot afford them, but I might get some basic multivitamins when I can.

My hair grows about half an inch a month normally, I'm not sure if the growth has really increased since I've started taking better care of it.

Lol, all of you guys getting an inch a month of growth are in your teens or early to mid 20's.
Enjoy it as it may not last! Mine used to grow an inch a month too by now I'm in my 30's it's less than half that. Only MN has ever made a difference and increased it.

Mine varies a lot, but since I've been charting it it's ranged from 3/4 inch to 1.2 inches. I take a hair skin and nails vitamin, drink 3 litres of water a day, and always eat 4 boiled eggs (for the protein) but to be honest I think it's hereditary, I don't really think you can alter it unless you're extremely malnourished and even then I think your hair would be more likely to fall out or be thin and weak...

Its hard to say, because once I came to LHC, I stopped dying with chemical dyes and I have also changed my shampoo and conditioning routine by being more selective about how much shampoo and where, etc.
But since I started in Feb at 18.5 I have gotten to 22.25 and I recently had a 3/4 inch trim. So I am right about 1" a month.
I also started taking vitamins at about the same time.
The difference in my hair pre-LHC and after is huge! I just wish I could have all my virgin hair and no dyed ends!! It is thicker, shinier and much easier to take care of!
So I'm not sure if I answered the question ;)

My hair grows an average of 1/2" a month. Though last month much to my surprise my hair grew 1". If I where to gain another inch this month I would be very happy.

I would say about 1/2 inch per month. I'm 31 and I've had three children. I think it may have grown a little faster when I was younger, but my hair is very healthy and shiny so I guess you win some and you lose some. Lol

I think I get about 1/2" per month. I'm not sure if it grew faster when I was younger, but I don't think I've ever had super fast growing hair! I do remember having a friend whose hair grew like a weed and me and another friend used to tease her for it (jealous much??!!).
So, I think for me 1/2" or so has always been fairly standard. If I grew my hair when I was younger I could go a long time between trims (like over a year at times) and I'd get significant growth...but just because I didn't trim. I still doubt it was more than 6" or so a year.
Anyway, I have currently decided to see if I can maximise my growth! I'm taking my hair vitamins daily, trying to eat a good diet with plenty of protein (something that's probably been a wee bit neglected since I stopped eating meat over a year ago), and I've also started hanging my head upside down and massaging my head each night before bed. I do it for the length of one song on my iPod!
I will also probably try Daktarin soon, when I get myself a tube, and see if that helps. I'd love 1" a month!!!!

Monistat helps with my growth, and I take prenatal vitamins and off/on biotin as well as lots of protein in my diet. However I don't think any growth aid can beat your genetics, some hair just grows slower. And it's not because you treat your hair well that it'll grow faster, it'll mostly just look better and need less trimming.

Pre-LHC, it grew about 1/2 inches per month. Now it grows about an inch per month, since I started using MN, and treating my hair much nicer with CO and no heat styling. But either way, I'm just happy that my hair is growing in thicker and shinier. It also helps that I really don't need trims so far, so that won't be a hindrance in my growing journey for the most part.

I think I get roughly 7 inches/year, but I don't measure consistently. My hair is known to occasionally make huge sprints though, and other times stall out. I'm pretty confident I once got 4 inches in a month, but that was probably a one-time thing.
Where's Squiggy? She gets about an inch when she's not doing anything and has pushed her growth rate to a consistent 3 inches/month at times.

3 inches per month?! This month will be my first time measuring and I cannot wait! I get to measure again on August 6 but, so far, in 6 days, it's grown a little over a quarter of an inch. I'll be sure to repost when I find out for sure!

Mine averages over the year to 0.67 inches per month. However, that includes months with nearly no growth at all and months with just under an inch of growth.
1/2 inch per month is an average, not a limit.

It's definitely hereditary, my mom is 69 and her hair still grows really fast.

My hair grows about 1/2"/month - don't know yet whether I will have some speedier periods or not since I've only been measuring since December. I do know my hair will slow down if I neglect to get in some moderate exercise (brisk walks, jog on spot (slowly hehe) for 15 minutes, and the like. Hmmm, I'm surprised to hear all the inches plus per month. They must be concentrated in this thread because I think it is pretty common knowledge that the average growth rate is 1/2" inch. Hasn't there been some evidence that biotin supplements can have negative effects on your health? I know some LHCrs have stopped, and that you can get plenty on a normal healthy diet.

My hair grows at around a half inch a month. I can tell by how often I trim my bangs.
When I started growing my hair out, I took vitamins that were for hair, nail and skin. I didn't notice much of a difference in my hair growth, but my nails grew like mad.

.75-1 inch average. Why so? Because it changes all the time, some months it's a little over (usually in the summer it's 1 1/2 inches) or sometimes it's less growth (winter, around 1/2 inch). Careful with the biotin really, 5000 mcg is already taking 150 times the recommended amount. You can get excellent growth without it, just protect your ends more.

I stopped using biotin after hearing some people report renal failure, which is NOT something i want from trying to get my hair just grow an extra inch a month. No one really notices anyways the growth until it's at a certain point, i don't wear it down anyways.

I've only tracked my hair growth on a month-month basis a few times during my 23 month transition so it's hard to say with accuracy. Based on the pics I do have it varies from .75 to 1 inch a month (I don't take vitamins regularly or use any growth aids unless you count hair oils).
Of course at the end of the day how fast you grow your hair means nothing if you don't retain what you grow. I can only assume my growth rate has always been this way yet I've never had really long hair in my life because I was not doing what I needed to do to keep what I grew.

It's more of an average, not a common opinion. People, papers etc do claim it's normal, but I never heard that more growth would be impossible. Some people gow faster, some slower (I think I grow about this much - how boring)
But then again, the fastest growers are often really the teens and twenties :) and we cannot terrorize the rest of the world with the ida of "some people are getting an inch or more a month, what's wromng with you??!" - when maybe nothing is...

On a good year I got up to 8-9" and on a bad year (last year) about 5". I got months with practically no growth. Health issues..
This is with benign neglect, with taking a multi-vitamin on and off.
Now I'm going to try to get my hair to grow 12" in the next year! I'm going all out with eating double protein, scalp massages, supplements.. My hair "routine" still only takes 15-20 minutes out of my day so I'm sure I can stick with it.
I'm very curious if I can really speed up my growth long term, not just get a growth spurt. But what I usually think happens, and has happened with me too, is that we take supplements and do the scalp massage or apply MT or MN or whatever, for a couple of months, get great growth.. and then get lazy and stop and the growth goes back to normal. I know last summer I got two inches in two months after a complete stall, when I started doing some things to get my hair growing. But after a couple of months I got lazy.
So I'm, really committing to a whole year of supplements, scalp massages with my concoction, and upping protein intake. Lots of veggies and fruit are a given :D
Oh and I'm not doing any crazy amounts like 15 000 mcg biotin.. But I have a wide array of things I've researched and think will be helpful, or that have been helpful in the past, like marine protein complex. And these are to SUPPLEMENT a healthy diet, not make up for it.

Nice to see you back Mommy of 4.
My hair grows almost an inch a month in the back where my hair is thick, and only 1/2 an inch in the front, where it's thin & breaks easily. Almost like I have two separate heads of hair.

Mine used to grow a bit over a half inch a month when I was in my teens and twenties. However, since I've gotten older it's slower than that. Before I saw my doc and got low dose thyroid meds I was averaging 4 inches a year, I'm now back up to the average half an inch a month. The back grows faster than the front, and sometimes one side will grow faster than the other then flip.

Hmmm...let's see.. I chopped off to sldr last august, and now it's apl... about 15-20 cm I guess? Roughly that would be 7.5-10 inches and over 11 months = 0.68-0,90 inches a month. Might be less, might be more, but that would be the average. :) I would love it to grow faster though... *angeleyes*

I have absolutely no idea how fast my hair grows! I don't measure it very often. I take MSM when I remember and I'm sure it helps with growth but as to actually how much growth I get in a month, well your guess is as good as mine.
I am a firm believer in benine neglect. (or in my case laziness!)

At the moment it seems to be growing at the 1/2 inch per month rate, however over the past 8 months since my last cut I have gained about 6 inches so that means on average I have actually grown about 3/4 of an inch each month. I guess I must've had a growth spurt at some point and then slowed down again!

Agree with this. When I last had long(ish) hair inmy mid-30s, I grew my hair from chin to BSL in about 18 months. Now its taken me more than 8 months to be just pushing APL. And I thought my hair grew slowly when I was younger!

Where's Squiggy? She gets about an inch when she's not doing anything and has pushed her growth rate to a consistent 3 inches/month at times.
this is true.. i was in a zero stress lifestyle and was taking a combo of natrol skin hair nails and a knockoff centrum.. 3 inches per month.
everyone has a genetic maximum speed their hair can grow, mine tops out at about 3 inches per month.
when im in good health i get an inch per month usually.. with my high stress of being a college student with learning disabilities.. and my poor diet..
however as i have been very ill since may (im just starting to get better YAY!), i have not grown much recently (a mere centimeter per month).. also when i had swine flu my hair completely stopped growing for 3 months..
lots of things go into the making of your hair growth speed.
genetics is the top factor
stress level
nutrition (lots of protein and vitamins=faster growth)
scalp health (read the monistat thread)
general health (hair growth is not your bodys first priority so when you are fighting off illness your hair may stall or slow down growth)
ETA: i would like to point out that i do not advise anyone take natrol skin hair nails.. even though it gave me 3 inches a month i can say, that its not worth it.. since the price went up (used to be 6$ a month, now like 16$) it is no longer worth it to put yourself through the hell that is swallowing them.. the smell when you open the bottle is so bad you may lose your lunch if you open it near your face.. the taste is the same.. the only way to get one of the pills down was chocolate milk because chocolate is such a vivid flavor it covers the nastiness.. also you cannot lay down after taking them or you will get very sick.. really not worth the extra couple inches.. oh and if you get a bottle that doesnt smell bad, then its too old to work anyway..

I'm similar to Pixiestar. I get around 1/2 to 3/4 inch per month. I take a multi B vitamin, liquid multi vitamin with iron, calcium, and drink plant powder smoothies (for the green veggies I don't really get). This has sped up my growth, I think.

I so wish that my hair grew faster. It usually grows around 6 inches each year, pretty average. I've never done monthly measurements, I just remember how long my hair was at the beginning of the year and where it is around the end.
As for heredity, shouldn't it be something that the whole family has? Because my hair is very weak and grows kind of slowly, but my sister's hair is very strong and suffers zero damage despite all the crap she puts it through. Also, I was checking out her roots, and there was about 3 inches of virgin hair I could easily see on the strands where she had stripped the color. When I asked her how long it had been since she had gotten it done, she said it had been about 2 months.
So while I'm getting about half an inch per month, she's getting something like an inch and a half.

Mine still grows the average normal rate of 1/2 inch a month AND I use large doses of Biotin, MSM and some liquid silica in moderation. Nearly 40 months later it still grows at the same rate with no slowing down or noticeable taper yet. I think the Biotin helps hair live longer and shed less so just learning to be patient. So NO just the normal rate of hair growth here! My hair growth is basically the same in summer and winter and I'm just learning to be grateful for the length I have achieved so far!

High doses of biotin have REALLY helped me. If you have any thyroid troubles, mine was hyperthyroid, so it was harder to tell symptoms, besides virtually no hair growth and staying thin even at 7 months pregnant, L-Lysine helps for that! I take 3 1,000 mg pills of Biotin daily, but I'm breastfeeding my fourth child, so my body might need more just because it's drained lol. Your body flushes whatever biotin it doesnt use, so you can't really overdose on it. L-lysine is an amino acid your body can't make itself and it helps the overall health of your hair and skin and it stimulates human growth hormone in your body. Horsetail(silica) is a great help. The average hair, skin and nail vitamins work well, but they dont have enough biotin in them to see a real difference, in my humble opinion. Also, MSM is excellent for hair and nail growth. My grandmother, who is 66 years old, took it for her joints and her hair grew in so thick that in the year she took it, her hair looked better than all of us grandkids' and it grew about 1 inch a month! Vitamins really do work. Alot of foods are irradiated and processed and the soils they grow in are usually depleted, so the vitamin content is lower than it used to be. Green tea is high in antioxidants and that helps your overall health. Protein and water are essential to healthy hair, but if you eat balanced meals, you're most likely good on that end. The healthier and more nourished you are, the better your new growth hair will look. Even if it doesn't grow faster, it will be healthier.:D
Sorry it's so long, I've been researching hair growth for about 2 1/2 years now lol.
*Talk to a doctor or pharmacist in your area about your daily value recommendations for supplements. I was told by a doctor in my area that operates the health food/vitamin store that I frequent that the daily values were studied and published in the 1940's, or around there, and that they are not very accurate. Everything he recommends is much higher than what the label says and I have never had side effects from a supplement, but lots of people do or may.*
* I didn't want my reply to get anyone sick or upset* These are just what I have been told or my opinions and not medical advice.

My hair grows a full inch or slightly more than an inch a month. Last month i only grew 1/2 an inch, for some reason I didn't get the norm (perhaps it's because of weight loss)
What I do to get this is...
I take
-1,000mcg biotin x2 a day
-1,500mg MSM x1 a day
-20mg silica x2 a week
-1,000mg royal jelly x2 a day
-500mg fish oil x3 a day
What I do
-Apply to my scalp 4 days a week before bed a mixture of 1/2 castor oil and 1/2 Shapley's M-T-G oil with some drops of peppermint, tea tree, sage, lavender, cinnamon, and cayenne essential oils
-Apply Monistat to my scalp every other day straight to a wet scalp, I do not mix my Monistat I apply it directly without dilution, I just make sure my scalp is wet (usually with my daily black tea scalp spray to prevent shedding)
-6 3 minute or 3 5 minute scalp massages daily (I'm not super consistent with it, but I do at least one or two massages a day when I remember or I'm bored, etc.
Extra help / things
-Wear my hair up all day 6 days a week
-Shampoo every 3 days
-comb hair with a bamboo comb
-EXERCISE (it helps a lot with circulation to the scalp so it will make your hair grow faster.

How do you use the castor oil and miconazole nitrate? I would like to try that. I'm breastfeeding, so I can't take msm right now. I am looking for alternatives to try.:)
I use to mix castor oil with half part olive oil at first, but now I just use it alone on my scalp only, every other day.
The MN I diluted with water and used everyday. I'm just on castor oil lately though.
I used an applicator bottle for both.

LOL yeah, for 3" a month I'd be taking big nasty vitamins by the handful AND paying way more than 16 USD LOL! I'd be throwing money at my hair if it could make it grow that much faster!
And yes. I'd do that for 2" too :)
I agree that stress levels probably inhibit growth too, I had a very stressful winter and slower than normal growth.. Not optimal health either. The stressful situations are pretty much over and I'm working on the health issues as well, seem to be getting better..
About the MN, I would NOT use it while breastfeeding. If something applied topically is causing people headaches, it is getting into your bloodstream and breast milk. I just would not go there, messing with the baby's nutrition!
It's one thing to be a bit reckless with our own body, and another when it's about a small child. I mean a normal application of one week or so is probably pretty harmless, at least if you really have an infection, but using it for weeks and months.. we just don't know the long term effects.

I am a mom with over 10 books on breastfeeding, all of which have sections on what medications are safe, and would NEVER endanger my child's health. I was asking about the MN for after breastfeeding. MN is not recommended during breastfeeding even for its actual use, but is often prescribed regardless. I just like making a list of things to try when I stop breastfeeding. MSM is on the top of the list, then horsetail, and that is all I really have so far.

Well, since I leave it up all the time and since it's curly, measuring is a bit difficult. If I remember correctly, it averaged to about 0.6 in per month.

Hahahah... for 3" a month I'd do a LOT worse than swallow a horrible tablet...no matter HOW horrible it was! I'd eat something gross like tripe or intestines or eyeballs (errm maybe not...and I'm a vegetarian LOL)...but yeah 3" a month... I can only dream! But if it was just swallowing a gross vitamin tablet I'd be totally in it!!
Hahaha me too :D and if I got 3 inches in a month, then I'd only take it for a month cause quite frankly, 3 inches would make a huge difference for me. :cheese:

well knowing that i just cut my hair at the end of May and i had an afro lololol and now my twist are laying down on my head i would say my hair grows 3/4 inch per month, for 4c hair that is great but i only comb my hair like once a week with a seamless comb.
what is really amazing is the fact that most afro textured types think that it is necessary to deep condition and pre-poo over night and all that stuff, i do not do any of that anymore since i have cut off my hair and it is growing at a faster rate than when i used to do those things.
my best friend since i have cut my hair is Apple cider vinegar, African Black soap, almond oil and shea butter and a whole bunce of essential oils lol and a bottle of knot today which i only use a teaspoon on my whole head and i dont even condition lol, who knew that growing hair was so easy hmmm thank you llc. :cheese::cheese::cheese::cheese::cheese:

1/2 inch a month is about right for me, but I really don't do anything special for growth - no vitamins or anything. Actually, I kind of wish it would grow a little more slowly . . . it always looks so nice & neat when it's freshly cut and my hemline is perfectly level all the way across (^(oo)^)

Interesting reading, but I think it proves the point that we are all different, there is no norm! although the accepted average is 1/2" per month. Maybe it slows down a bit as we get older!

I absolutely don't understand "normal" people's hair. I was talking to my sister and she was convinced the average growth rate was 1/4 inch a month, and I've heard poeple say 1/8 was average. When I was in school I was talking to several people and one girl said her hair doesn't grow nearly 1/2 a month, and these two guys who I've known for 4 and 2 years had APL and shoulder length hair, respectively. Mind you, they already had hair past their jaw aready when I fist saw them, and they haven't cut their hair.
I understand that there is some variation, and not evryone can get 1/2 inch, but what are the chances that all these people I know have hair that grows far slower than average???

I get anywhere from 3/4" to 1.25" depending on various things like my health, my diet, and time of year. Since I've been keeping track of these things, I noticed my hair grows noticeably faster when I eat a really good diet with lots of salads, eggs, fish, chicken, and good fats like avocado and olive oil. (for me it is easier to eat like this in the summer. In colder months, I drift away from salads.) Supplements do help, and they make my hair look really healthy, but as far as speed of growth, for me it's mostly diet.

Mine is dragging around, I haven't measured it to see. If I didn't color it, I'd be sure it wasn't growing at all. It grows in spurts, for awhile I won't have roots showing and then they are really long. I don't do anything special for growth besides wait. I trimmed 2 1/2 inches before summer and seems to be almost back now so I'd guess its growing 1/2 inch per month. If it grew really fast, I might fry it trying to keep it colored so I'll just wait.

I don't have any idea about how much my hair grows in a month, I just know that it grew from shoulder lenght to APL in 10 months. I can try to predict the time it takes to grow to my next goals from that, and it's enough for me. :)

Very slowly... I'd been trimming about 1 or 2cm every 2 months, and that maintained my length. So I guess it grows at about 1 or 2cm every 2 months!
From now on I will be dusting instead, and only when needed (I expect that will be once every 5 months or less, we'll find out). Let's see how fast I can get from WL to TBL.

Mine grows 3/4 - to 1" a month. It has always grown relatively fast, so I think it is mostly genetics for me. But I am sure hair can grow faster with proper care, biotin, castor oil, and other things. I tried castor oil which did seem to speed up growth. Overall I'm fairly content with my natural growth though.

Jealous of you fast growers. AFTER I started taking vitamins for hair AND after my doc started me on low dose levothyroxine, AND during the warmer months I get about half an inch a month. On a good month I might get 3/4 of an inch, but usually only on one side the other is still only half an inch, thankfully its not always the same side so it equals out over time.

I used to think my hair just grew very slowly, and while that may still be the case, I think it actually grows at a decent pace, but only a little bit each month. I love the summer growth though! I think it goes from maybe a third of an inch to a half and inch. It seems like a good make-up or all the suffering me and my hair does during that time of year.

I stopped using biotin after hearing some people report renal failure, which is NOT something i want from trying to get my hair just grow an extra inch a month. No one really notices anyways the growth until it's at a certain point, i don't wear it down anyways.

I'm sure not fond of renal failure either ..

Do you fast growers find that your nails grow fast as well? My hair grows in the 1" / month range (90+% genetic, I'm pretty sure), and my fingernails have to be trimmed often as well. I gave up on trying to keep my toenails painted, since they have to be cut about every 3 weeks and it was just too much of a pain. I told this to a friend of mine (whose hair grows really slowly) after she said that her pedicure lasted for months, and she was shocked.
Anyway, just wondering if people find that rates of growth for their hair and nails seem to correlate....

I stopped all of that about 1 month ago and just started taking a multivitamin as well as 2 fish oil capsules, vitamin c, d, b-12, Coq10, and magnesium.

Yes and it kind of bothers me because I don't like long nails. I just looked at my nails because of your post and noticed my nails look like I am wearing a "french manicure" (the tips are white) not sure what the heck that means. I hope it means they are healthy and not that I have some weird disease. :p

That is quite a lot!! I remember the people who said they got renal failure were taking their pills twice or 3 times a day and taking the biggest amounts they could find. Good thing you stopped soon and it was 2600...i was taking 5000mcg a day. Just know if you want to be taking extra vitamins and stuff, make sure you know the amount your body actually needs, it's not bad to take a little bit of biotin if you know it's what your body wants. That excess can cause trouble with your kidneys with the biotin.

Recently, though, it took me 6 weeks to get 1", but during that time I had 2 bouts of stomach flu, a sinus infection, and a dear friend committed suicide at 31, not to mention I was behind on a collaboration project because of all that illness. 1) The last four months - when I've been exceedingly ill and stressed - my hair grew 3 inches (i.e 3/4 inch/month)
2) I have found diet to be very important in hair growth. I need adequate calories, protein and healthful fats as well as fruits and vegetables. The only "diets" I go on these days are ones where I stop eating "junk" food. I don't eat much of it anyway.
3) Now I am well, but I don't know how fast my hair will grow.

My diet hasn't been good lately. Moving countries with a couple of food intolerances ... I tend to just go with 'safe' food, which isn't necessarily 'good' food! I'm hoping to find a few farmer's markets and get back to a diet of good, lean meats and fresh veg soon though.
