The other one that kinda bothers me is people learning how long my hair is, and immediately saying, "Oh, it must be really thin, and that's how it can be in such a small bun, right?" Uhh.. My hair is not that thin, it just compacts a lot, and my bun is not that small, just fairly tight, and even if it was really thin, why do you have to say it like it's a bad thing?

Grr. Darned people and their massive bun expectations. It's those donuts and teasing and hairspray and basically damaging buns that give people those ridiculous notions, I'm sure. (Nobody could ever accurately describe your buns as small, though, Sarahlabyrinth!! :shake:)

I see *nothing* whatsoever small about the buns you knee-length & beyond ladies make. On the contrary, I am always in awe of the size of all of your buns.
Now the bun I make is puny in contrast to that (it compacts easily), and nobody says my bun is tiny. At least, not to my face. ;)

Well, see, here's a bun with a paranda, and an infinity bun and a nautilus bun without a paranda, you can see the huge difference in size between with and without paranda. I never feel that my buns without a paranda are big, my hair compacts so much. I wish I didn't have compactible hair. :(

Otherwise I think I will cut back to knee when I have reached ankle, to thicken it up a bit at kneelength.

Eresh, I'm sure your thickness will grow down more as you head to ankle! You'll just need some of that Patience stuff, you know what I mean :) Thin braid complex is awful, I know - I have it too! It must somehow be the camera angle making it look thicker sometimes - I don't really know how that works. Hair is just weird and has a mind of it's own. :agree:

I think you should grow on! You can do it, for sure, and you could perhaps maintain at ankle for a while to wait for the thickness to travel down more, instead of cutting back to knee. Would that be a better option?

The dimensions of the body from faraway take over the focal point making the braid merely a detail but close up the dimensions of the braid become the focal point and the true perspective is reflected.

If my hair ever has ends that look so good at that length I would be very happy indeed! But if you really do want to thicken up some, maybe see if there's somewhere between knee and ankle where a sharper taper starts and cut back to there? At least to start with, to see if it makes you feel better without losing a foot or so of length. Tbh though at those lengths it seems that thinner ends are inevitable but right now your ends certainly don't *look* thin anyway
The dimensions of the body from faraway take over the focal point making the braid merely a detail but close up the dimensions of the braid become the focal point and the true perspective is reflected.

This definitely was not aimed at me (not modesty, but absolute certainty because I've not posted any pics ) but I will answer the Q anyway: I bun my hair with a sturdy fork that's about the width of my bun, making sure it's fairly loose at the scalp and the fork vertical, cover it with satin and sleep on a satin pillowcase. I'd prefer to wear a cap but the one I bought with elastic rubbed away at my hairline :tmi: so this works well as a plan B. (I sleep on my side mostly but the bun and pillow are squidgy enough not to be a problem if I want to lay on my back.)

Thank you all very much :o. Knee length snuck up on me multiple times over the past 6 months or so. I've been so busy for the past couple years that I feel back into benign neglect with my hair. I brushed/combed once every few days much of the time and would go 1+ week without washing it at a time. I have kept it in a bun nearly every day and kinda forgot it existed.
I only have maybe 4 inches of thinned ends/layers left, maybe a bit more I'm not sure. At the time I had my hair layered last it was waist length and I had face framing short layers all the way down and I think I've cut back at least half since then. I think I'll continue doing good sized trims every 2-6 months like I have been and maybe see what my terminal length is. I found out last year that my great grandmother had my exact hair colour and texture and she had hair past floor length, thick all the way down.

I have a question for all the kneelength and beyond ladies....
With these lengths, Do you notice the weight of your bun getting heavier?
I was wondering if this was a fable or true: "Wearing a bun every day can make your hairline recede."
I have the feeling my buns get heavier and pull on my hairline lately.
So now I am afraid it will actually recede my hairline.
Maybe I just have a sensitive scalp all of a sudden??
Do you notice anything from wearing your hair in a bun all day every day?
My hair is up every day....for years now.
Only down (braid) at night.
I think I will change it up and wear a braid down or a ponytail more often....

I haven't noticed any problem myself, no. It should be fine as long as the buns aren't tight, surely. And it must help to have the hair not in an updo for sleeping so the roots get to rest.

June 23rd, 2019, 10:06 AM
I have. Unfortunately, sometimes i wake up, in the middle of the night, with scalp aches that have turned into throbbing headaches, a couple of times, because my braid was just laying over my head and down the side of the bed. I do notice at times pain even when i wear a bun that seemed fine but at one point during the day it starts aching. I touch the back of my scalp and it's tender. I am hoping all these situations were due to the buns being tight or the braid puling and not well balanced because i certainly can only wear my hair loose one night a week and i want to grow longer.
eresh
June 23rd, 2019, 10:16 AM
It hasn't gotten to the point of getting a headache, just sore scalp, especially at the hairline.
Yes me too, beginning of the day the bun is fine, but it gets heavier and heavier and pulling more.
My tenderness on the scalp is more on top than at the back.
My buns are not tight.
Maybe I should try double buns or a bun with 2 braids to distribute the weight more.
But my go to buns are a simple braided bun (almost every day) and sometimes a discbun.
I already had to sell all my L Ficcares because they were just too heavy on my head.
But at the moment I think even the M's will be too heavy.
Now I mainly use acrylic sticks.
Ligeia Noire
June 23rd, 2019, 10:29 AM
Mine is just on the back of my head where the bun sits. Not often but sometimes it turns into a headache... if the hairline hurts it wil be right when i sm putting it up and i switch it right away. I alternate between cinnabuns and braided ones. They hold well, work with forks or sticks and are fast to do. And very well balanced i thought because i am fine throughout most of the day... no ideas here from me. Just hoping it does not become constant.

If you guys do say a regular Nautilus, not a fancy bun or anything, do you have the same issues?
Ligeia Noire
June 23rd, 2019, 11:46 AM
I don't think these buns are fancy at all. They are pretty simple and standard and balanced. Braided bun, cinna bun, hello?
I've noticed the issue with various buns. I can't say for all of them as I need something practical and fast to do every morning. As I said before, I got scalp aches turning into headaches a couple of times with a simple English braid. Specially when it is at its heaviest. After air drying. Woke up in the middle of the night with the top and back of my scalp sore and tender and spreading the tension into a headache. Needed to take an aspirin. I believe my braid was flipped and hanging and that caused it. Fortunately, so far, it is sporadically happening. I've only noticed it after reaching knee lenght.

I actually thought the weight might be distributed badly or so, due to more intricate buns (let's call them that). But if it's got nothing to do with that, then I have nothing to add. :) Nevermind!

I find that twists in the front relieve tension on the front hairline. Gossamer has a video of how she does hers.
My hair doesn’t like being pulled in contrary directions. Top knots are only comfortable for a few hours, crown braids are right out, but I can do coronets because they don’t shift the direction at the roots. Buns low on the nape work best for me for this reason. Nothing to do with weight here, just a scalp sensitive to direction.

I've only started 'noticing' my buns recently, not usually soreness or tenderness unless I didn't do it right and a tine was pulling on a strand, or something. It has only been happening recently, but I've also been ... how to say? Not 'more ill' but maybe more aware of bodily sensations in trying to make sure I rest before starting to feel awful. I've also become more sensitive at times to light and sound, and if I'm particularly fatigued I'll notice my skin feeling tender (allodynia), so I put any unexplained scalp tenderness down to that. Maybe it's something to keep an eye on though. I have had a few nights in recent weeks when I've just wanted to sleep with my hair down even though it's not air-drying; just last night I figured out I could do a low bun loose at the scalp kept roughly in place with a leather 8 and covered in satin. In the daytime low buns drive me batty but it was loose enough not to sit on my neck last night.
My hairline is perfectly happy still, for now anyway! I guess the only way round it in the daytime would be to wear it loose under a satin cap that didn't rub away at my hairline (so not the one I already own)

Thank you for all your input!!
I started noticing my buns more after kneelength too.
But these last 2/3 weeks were more extreme.
I washed my scalp last night, and did a cold water rinse (on the length too), then some leave-in coconutspray.
Went to bed with a braid.
This morning I bunned my hair the usual way, made sure it is not tight and used a single hairstick.
(2 sticks create more tension than just 1)
It is now almost 4pm and I stayed indoors (besides walking the dog very early this morning) and I feel only very little tension from the bun, the normal.
Not like the last 2/3 weeks.
I think my scalp must be irritated/over sensitive because we had a lot of sun and heat here, which we aren't used to!!
But in any case it might be good to switch buns form time to time or wear a braid down.
I know hairtaping faux crownbraids works perfectly, no tension then, but it is just too timeconsuming to do
I am less worried now about the fable of receding hairline because of buns every day.

No eresh, I do not have pulling on my hairline at all, even when I was at ankle. I part my hair instead of pulling it straight back. Most importantly, I take both hands (after I've created the bun), and push my hair forward a bit. Then I use a hair stick and slide it into the hair at the hairline and lift a bit. This takes all the pressure off the hair at my hairline. I hope this helps. 😊

Usually a bun I have no idea if it has a name that I made up, and sometimes a braided cinnabun. Both held with a three tine fork.

Hmmmm I do brush the hair back before I braid, maybe I should leave my natural middle part and then braid.

I never brush or comb. You guys probably know I only brush before and after a wash.
So what do I do with a bun? I just "loosely" gather it and just put it up. I never get hair cleavage. Oddly enough, because that of course could happen. I had no problems even at FTL, but of course I don't know what knee-length would be! So take it for what it is. :flower:

Does anyone here ever French or Dutch braid their hair at this lengthy? and how do they separate the pieces once the hair is longer than their fingers??
I just got frustrated today because my hair is several inches longer than my fingers when separating sections and I braid my hair a lot. It is a go-to hairdo for me. I have been doing okay do far but foresee in the near future serious problems with separating sections. So any advice??

I've been wearing loose LWBs and ficcare held cinnabuns for years now (mostly the former) and have not had any issues with a receding hairline, and my hair is very heavy. I do find that the weight on my scalp is too much if I have a headache, which always makes my scalp more sensitive.
I've had issues with separating sections for dutch/french braids for as long as I've tried doing them. I've only ever been able to successfully do a french braid the one time, and honestly I've given up at this point. I'm lucky if I can do a regular braid. The only way I can do braids without hassle is if they're over the shoulder, which works well enough for me.

I do it very rarely because it is a pain. I sometimes use a hairstick when separating because it gives me several inches of extra "finger length". If you have the flexibility and dexterity you can use your feet as an extra pair of hands.

I do Dutch braids on special occasions, or when I feel like taking much more time to do my hair in the morning.
Because I DO like to wear a chinese braided bun or interlaced braids sometimes.
Not that often, I'm lazy and fall back on my regular braided bun or a discbun a lot, as it is the most quick bun to do.
But yea, it takes a LOT of time to keep seperating the strands untill the very ends at every "braidstroke".
If you want to do it quick, your ends will get tangled, really take your time :-)

I wish I had learned how to French/Dutch braid my own hair when it was shorter. I first tried to learn when it was already somewhere near classic length, and it was so difficult. Now it's still a struggle, with the additional problem of hair longer than finger tips.
Long story short, no, I don't really French or Dutch braid my hair. I make do with regular braids.

I am curious, at these lengths, did you switch to cones?
I used cones untill I found the hairforums, then switched to no cones.
Because it was a hype back then LOL
But now, at calf, I am going to try and switch back to cones again.
Maybe my hair will be less tangly, especially the ends.
:o
I ordered all the products in the Gliss line for Supreme Lengths.(shampoo, conditioner, antitanglespray, hairserum and hairmask)
Can't wait to try.
And at Gossamer's recommendation also ordered 2 bottles of Neutrogena anti residue shampoo to clarify when needed.
Had to order those from the USA, they don't have this in the Netherlands.
I don't think anti residue shampoos exist here....

I'm planning to try a diagonal French braid with the length bunned for a wedding reception this evening. My sister will be here a few hours before we go so I can ask her to help separate strands if I need help! (Last time I did a French or Dutch braid was over a year ago, so about 6 inches shorter ~mid-thigh length.)
I started using water-soluble cones a while ago in a particular cheap but rich conditioner, and my hair feels softer with them so I kept going. My problem is shampoo - but I guess if I really wanted to switch to 'normal' cones, I could use whatever on my length and my scalp wouldn't be affected. I'd just rather not have the hassle and I quite like how my hair is without the regular silicones anyway :)

I actually french braid fairly frequently, but I first learned to braid at all when my hair was knee-ish-length so I've never known anything different. My methods include:
- (most importantly) flicking each strand away from the others as I braid so they don't get tangled in the first place
- using gravity to help by lifting the new strand up and away from the rest of the hair
- using my knees (or feet!) to separate strands
- not worrying too much about tangles until the top of the french braid is finished and then holding the braid in my teeth as I untangle the rest with both hands. It's MUCH easier that way.
I don't know what people are complaining about...it seems pretty simple to me!

the shine is the same as without cones and my hair is much more slippery, my bun keeps loosening.
Maybe I am just grumpy today (headache and have to go to the dentist in a minute...) and I should give it a longer time to try and see if I like it.
My hair needs some time to adjust.
Yep, going to try some more times. Next time without the anti-tangle spray and with the mask.

OMG the products for super long hair would be amazing!
*A stool for standing in the shower without your hair going down the drain
*hip-supported hair clamp to hold the right braid/twist/rope while you do the left side
*baseball cap with extra large hole to fit a huge bun
*combination hair-dryer couch so you can sit and watch movies for the hours it takes for your hair to dry

*hip-supported hair clamp to hold the right braid/twist/rope while you do the left side
*baseball cap with extra large hole to fit a huge bun
*combination hair-dryer couch so you can sit and watch movies for the hours it takes for your hair to dry
*a rod for detangling the back-braid as it forms (same thing we've been discussing)
Any other ideas?
They just sold a step-stool, but shower friendly here in my local Lidl, it was on sale too, they had 2 left. They were gone in no-time, because they are actually disability-aids.

Once upon a time there was a ball cap with a hair friendly hole in the back (no velcro, no snaps), but I think it was sized for hefty ponytail. Also, a fleece camp beanie that had an opening for a ponytail (but not a hefty ponytail...I exploded the one I got).

Haven’t been on here in a while :) My hair is nearly at the back of my knees now (or maybe already is) however it’s a V hemline with slight fairy tale ends. I’d like to make it a U shape with thicker ends but that would require me to cut like 5-6 inches and idk if I’m ready for that commitment

I have a sun hat from Colonial Williamsburg designed to sit on top of the head and tie under a bun and be secured with hatpins. It is the only hat I've found that accommodates my buns. I just accept that all winter hats sit strangely and make my hair fuzzy and wear headscarves instead of winter hats if I need one.

That's quite the length. Would love to see a picture. Do not have much advice on U shaped hemlines... 6 inches is quite a bit and fairytale ends at knee are beautiful and natural. Specially if your hair is on the wavier side.

I agree with Ligeia Noire - fairy tale ends look great at knee! I felt like you do a couple years ago - just dying for a blunter hemline - so I grew it to calf and cut it back 13 inches... and I hated it! having a blunt hemline makes a lot of hairstyles a lot more difficult because you can't just tuck the ends in underneath, and it didn't look significantly better than before (in my opinion). So keep that in mind - the grass is always greener, as they say :) You may already have the perfect hair :queen:

Y’all are so nice for making me feel better about my fairy tale ends :) I’ve never had this long of length in my life so it’s something I have to get used to. My ends have always been thicker (around my waist) but as time and length goes on, it’s fairy tailing more so this look is new to me :)

It depends on the individual hairs, alot but not most of my hair grows and will grow beyond calf if I let it but it gets too thin as the majority of my hair reaches terminal far above that so I just cut it I don't like thin ends on myself tho.

Welcome to the thread! I would say it depends, because some fairytailing can be from damage or recovering from large sheds, but if those are not likely causes it probably means your hair's starting to think about terminal (as it were) - you might be nowhere near it yet, but the taper may continue as you grow longer as more individual hairs reach their terminal whilst the longest ones grow on.
I'm personally hoping that some of my taper/fairytailing is from years of suboptimal treatment - my hair wasn't abused but I didn't know how else to care for it - but a lot of it *is* probably from getting closer to terminal.

So...I haven't been on this forum in more than a decade. When I joined, my hair was around mid-thigh (see my profile pic!), and I was SURE it was terminal length.
Um. So I made it to knee-length a few years ago, so apparently my hair WAS capable of longer. It's a bit past knee-length now, but it thins out very quickly past classic length.
If anyone cares, I do absolutely nothing nice for my hair: I use plain old Suave clarifying shampoo and cheapo conditioner that is chock full of dimethicone ('cause my hair actually ADORES it). I brush it almost every day...but not quite. What I DO do, that I suspect my hair really likes, is only wash it once per week. I also never blow dry it. I never color it. I never perm/straighten/iron/curl it. It's in a braid all day (otherwise it would eat passers-by), and it's loose all night (on a flannel pillowcase!). I like to think of my method of hair care as "benign neglect." It might not be the best, but it's worked for me for more than three decades, so yay!

I think that, the vital habits, when it comes to long hair are, not washing it too much, not using heat or dye and keep it contained... the rest are all details really...

Like I said, it's been a LONG while (11 years...ahem) since I was last on here, but at the time, everyone was talking about how horrible 'cones were, and I was always a bit uncomfortable about that. It's nice to know my hair isn't the only lover of the cones.
I would add one extra vital habit to your list: don't cut it. I know, silly, but when people ask me things like "how did you ever manage to grow it that long?" I have always, being a jerk, said "I don't cut it." Trite, but important, I think.

I don't either, if that's what it means. BTW, there is nothing wrong with silicones or with sulfates, if that is what your hair requires and wants. I always say, it's about what your hair wants not about what you want for your hair. It is what keeps it happy that is the best for it.
Congrats on knee & beyond! :D

I'm going to throw one more potential factor into the great silicone/sulfate debate. What is the quality of your water? Is it hard or soft? Is it naturally soft or do you have a water softener? Having experienced all kinds of water qualities, I have found that it really affects how silicones/sulfates work with your hair.

Our water is very hard but otherwise good quality; my hair likes water-soluble silicones and my scalp hates sulphates (in fairness it dislikes lots of sulphate-free shampoo too). When I try them out every so often to see if my scalp has become more tolerant, they usually make my hair feel quite dry anyway.

Here is 17.7°dH; (IIRC lapushka's is somewhat harder.) There seem to be parts of the US and Canada that are double that, plus they often have a higher pH which means the water deposits even more minerals. Ours is consistently just above pH 7 so it thankfully doesn't really 'behave' any harder than it is.
Where we're going on holiday it's 3-4°dH so I find myself tempted to wash my hair more often for the sake of the experience :rollin:

Oh! Maybe I misread the Belgian classifications then; I thought their definition of 'very hard water' was something like 25+°dH, somewhat more than the UK classification of 17+°dH, which is why I thought your water was harder than ours. Not that it really matters, it's just interesting (to me, anyway!) ;)

Interestingly, I don't think the water quality matters too much to my hair -- I have lived in five different states in the US since I started growing my hair, and the water was different in all of them (everything from extremely soft to imported from other states to extraordinarily hard well water), but my hair has always loved 'cones. At least it's consistent!!!

Thank you! I will, admit, however, that my pic is EXTREMELY old (um...2007?). My hair is not its happiest right now, as it spends a portion of every day in a riding helmet and another portion of the day in a bunned braid, neither of which it likes. Straight braid is its favorite -- even better than loose.
One of these days I'll post a pic -- I'm going to wait until after a wash day for maximum straightness. I want to show off my actual length and texture.

Silicones experiment is over!
I decided it was enough, my hair got dryer and strawlike.
Also I didn't like how slippery it was in buns.
So I'm giving away the Gliss products to Eadwine, her hair really likes it :-)
I washed with Neutrogena today. Wow, CLEAN!!!
Then used my old products: Kokosboost conditioner and mask.
Toweldried my hair, sprayed in Kokosboost oilspray, brushed with the wet detangler and braided.
Went downstairs, but after half an hour I thought my hair was feeling too sticky.
Maybe too much treatment after the Neutrogena LOL
So I washed my length again with Kokosboost shampoo, then conditioner, with cold water.
It feels much better now.
So, nope, my hair does not react well to silicones.

I don't treat my hair "more" after a special clarify-wash with the Pantene clarifying shampoo. I might let my conditioner sit in a little longer (which I rarely even do), but I don't put more styling products in. At least, that's how I do it. :)

I love it when a nice beautiful fork comes a long. I am now facing the fact that my hair is too heavy for the pretty metal hair sticks and bone/horn hair sticks I had gotten a year ago. They are splitting and bending as I jam them in. The wooden ones seem to be holding up the best. Does anyone have advice for oiling or conditioning the wood to keep it from drying too much? I think my hair must be drying them out. My hair has always been the type to absorb liquids. The few times, in the nineties, when I got perms with hair at APL, my hair sucked up four to five kits at a time. I want to use something that is good for the wood but that won't affect my hair. I don't know much about woodworking.
Saige, I love your color. The beautiful swirls in that fork are reflected in your beautiful swirl of hair in this bun. Just amazing.

OMG, Ligeia Noire, your hair is stunning! :thud:
I'm almost afraid to ask this question...
I have baby fine 1A hair. I maintained it at waist length most of my life, though it has been at hip a couple of times.
Right now, I'm growing out after having it short for a couple of years. Currently, it's BSL.
So, for the question...
Do any of you with fantastic lengths have my hair type? Or is dreaming of extreme lengths just that...a pipe dream?

Thank you, I cannot answer from experience but I have seen plenty of classic + ladies and gents with fine hair.

You're welcome!
I'm thinking that I will try to reach terminal this time around. We'll see how my hemline looks when it goes past hip. :flower:

Neoma You should be able to achieve the longer long lengths. You know how to take care of your hair and it will be lovely.
The biggest secret ingredient to His Royal Highness, Naughty Mess, first of his name, creator of knots is....
The naughty mess says, "hair crack"
No. Obviously not, hair crack keeps hair monsters self aware. Hair crack is only to be used to maintain control of hair monsters bent on world domination. The secret is patients.
The naughty mess says, "that is so motivational poster lame. The secret is hair crack"

So lovely, Ligeia!
Neoma, I don't have your hair type but my hair is fine... I'm sure that with gentleness and patience you will grow a long way. The patience thing can be the hardest part!

Naughty Mess calls the oil mix I make hair crack. But he won't let me share. Well that's is a kind of fib, he did let me add some extra stuff and give a big container to my haunt friend Lulu after she got out of the hospital after her ostomy reversal. We did some searching and added good stuff for thinning and she really liked it. It was almost a year ago... I need to make more.

Seeshami that made me LOL  Edit: didn't see your last post when I originally wrote my comment. That's very cool - that hair crack is an actual thing makes it even better :D
Neoma I believe Cg has grown to knee before, with 1a/F/i hair. She's currently somewhere past FTL and I don't know where she intends stopping this time round :) bparnell I think maintains at ~TBL out of preference with a similar type (can't remember her stats exactly) - none of this is a guarantee that you would definitely be able to grow to or past knee, of course, but it may be more realistic than you think :) it would be great to see how far you could go!
(Knee was my own fantasy/wishful goal, even at classic I still didn't think I could make it )
Beautiful as ever Ligeia! Do you know how far until ankle?

It's nice that he let you share with Lulu, though. :flowers:

MusicalSpoons husband noticed that when he was measuring, the longest strands are already reaching my ankles.
However, it will probably take until December/January to reach it dry.

I don't post pictures, but MusiclSpoons is right, my baby-fine hair has never had any problem reaching knee w blunt hemline. I see no reason other finies can't keep growing as long as their terminal allows it. Good luck and happy growing!

Can I sneak in an update, with a little photo spam, from my frizzy hair on Sunday?
Just love the twilight effect... It is creeping down to ankle, husband measured at 167 cm or 66 inches a couple of weeks ago
