View Full Version : Which Manic Panic colors would show without bleaching?

I have medium-dark brown hair with golden undertones (see my icon), and I'm wondering if there's a blue or purple Manic Panic dye that will show on my hair without bleaching first?
I really like this color, for instance...

And this (or just slightly darker than this)...

Anyone know?

It can. It might not be as vibrant, but check out my albums for a picture of manic panic/special effects on my hair, which is naturally blonde(pretty light, but not bleached, so it doesn't pick up the color as well).
It will show up as a purple tint/blue tint at the very least, though you might end up with brown/purple hair as opposed to true purple.

you could probably get purple but you'd have to use gobs and gobs of it, so your natural color wouldn't peak through.

The main issue with darker hair and using an unnatural colour is it can affect the outcome. If you have any red in your hair and you use a blue, you will find you turn out more brown than blue as a result of any natural red tones. Same goes for very golden blonde hair, blue dye can very quickly look greenish because of the yellow tones from the natural hair colour. The purpose of bleaching is to not just to lighten the hair but remove as much pigment as possible so there's nothing to affect the final colour. The ideal of course is white hair.
But most manic panic colours I imagine would show, though it'd be most noticeable when it catches the light.
I want to go purple again now, damn you! :p That's such a pretty colour wig.

Yeah it wouldn't be as vibrant. On this link - here (http://www.amphigory.com/se_deep_purple.html) there is an example of purple over unbleached hair. Vrigi Rose (http://www.amphigory.com/se_virgin_rose.html) soemtimes looks good on unbleached hair. another over unbleached hair. I used pillarbox red over (dyed) medium brown and it worked, but the color faded really fast and wasn't as vibrant as it would be on bleached hair.

I've done Punky Color Plum over natural brown and white hair. The white picks up the color great of course. The brown gets more of a tint, but really shines in the sun. I have pictures in my album.

I've already used a blue (but i don't remember which one exactly) on my brown hair, and it showed a kind of dark blue, almost black but not too much, it was nice and stayed for about 2 weeks. I'll try to post a pic from my album (if i find how to)

Aw, man, now I feel the impulse the bleach, because I really want vibrant, unique hair lately, but my hair's pretty healthy...blahrg. That photo of the girl with long (bleached) Virgin Rose hair really makes me jealous.

I don't want "eggplant" hair, but dark purple's fine...as long as it is recognizably purple and not black with an undertone, or some drab plummy shade.

My tests for After Midnight Blue and Black And Blue came out very muddy and rather greenish (and faded even greener before fading out entirely) on my mid-to-dark warm brown hair (mostly gold overtones, with a possible but very faint suggestion of copper). I would definitely pick a purple rather than a blue, and, obviously, just get one jar and do a hairball test first! One of the cool pink colours might even give you a purple.
Whatever the colour, if it's cool, it will probably come out muddy on warm coloured hair.

Thanks for this info. I'm going to try it.
I hope it works, because I really don't want to start bleaching my hair.
I'm scared my hair's too dark...this is a bad pic of my hair, but you get the idea.

Aww, my hair used to be that colour :( I miss it so much. But I'm still paying for the bleach damage.

I imagine it would show up fairly well on your hair, providing you go for a pinky purple colour. As said before anything too blue will end up muddy because of the golden tones in your hair.
Good luck. Try a small section first to see how it goes, and it looks alright then go for full head. Don't forget to post pictures.
Just beware colours like manic panic have a tendency to bleed every time you wash your hair, so make sure you don't use light towels :p I had to clean the bathroom every time I washed my hair as it always turned bright pink!

This person did purple on unbleached brown hair. I wonder what it looked like indoors, though.

Will they eventually fade out to my natural color over time?
I can't use regular commercial dyes to get back to my natural color because of allergies, so I'd be stuck with harsh grow-out lines.

Oh I LOVE that colour. It really does look great on just about anybody. I especially love the shocking pink it seems to fade to. :thudpile:

Hi there! Just a quick note, but there's a really good website about unnatural hair colour I can recommend that has an article about dyeing unbleached hair with semi-permanents such as Manic Panic, and runs through a quick list of suggested colours for natural hair depending on the starting colour:
http://haircrazy.info/beginner-guides/dyeing-unbleached-hair/
here you go, hope it helps! It helped me decide to use my favourite deep redish pink on my natural light brown hair.

From that picture, your hair is a fair bit lighter than mine, but similar in tone.
As for fading out, yes, completely on my hair colour. In my hairball tests, I washed them twice a day for probably two weeks to see what tones they would fade through, and all three colours I tested (the two blues and Raven) faded out entirely. Raven also faded out completely within a few weeks when I did test streaks in my hair (while still attached to my head.) I think you'll find that it fades sooner than you wanted, rather than later.
(On blonde hair, though, I'm told it can be a little different, and may leave a more permanent stain. I assume it probably does to a degree in dark hair too, but it's so light and translucent that your natural pigment dominates entirely, and you cannot see at all that there was dye up to a certain level in it after it has faded.)

Awesome, thanks so much for this. Very helpful.
I was worried I'd get to enjoy the haircolor for like a month, only to have to wait three or four years for it to grow out and look a hot mess in the meantime. Haha-

I've got Punky Rose-Red over my unbleached hair, which ranges in color from dark blonde to white. There's a couple of pictures in my photo album, too.
I did it the day before Easter, and the color is still going strong. In fact, it seems to be getting brighter every time I wash it.

Glad to help. ^__^
Though, like I said earlier, do your own hairball tests, too, to check that the colour will come out right, and that it won't fade through anything disgusting-looking. >_o

I'd love to try manic panic with either a blue color or green, but just a few streaks. But I have hennaed hair, wouldn't work I think.

With blue, you might get some awesome purple.

That would be great too! Purple itself might turn brown with red I guess.
