Check out the first post in this thread for a chart of what you're looking for: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=28574
I rarely see actual splits, but many crinkles. It's amazing what you find when you start looking.
There was a thread on S&D tips recently that might also help: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=41253
Have fun!
ETA: Just wanted to add that you don't have to S&D instead of trims, you can do both, or neither. See this recent thread for discussion: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=40929

Well, those links pretty much covered it, but the way I do it is that I hold my hair up in front of my computer screen.
You can also see them really easily outside.

If you don't see them, you might not have any. If you haven't been abusing your hair, at 15 inches it's still pretty young.
