Hi all!

I think this might be my fist real contribution to this community. Given the recent thread about creating a new forum for super long hairs, what about dynamizing this one to call more super long hairs to participate and awaken from their slumber?

I got the idea to create a thread dedicated to very long haired models, art, artists and film, yesterday, when a dear online acquaintance, shared with me the work of Stan Shuttleworth, a photographer dedicated to emulate the beauty of long haired ladies,
that started, mostly, around the 50s, the photographs are all tasteful and gorgeous.
The website is very basic but shows all of the women that he photographed and a brief description. There are so many different women and so many different
heads of hair and I am a vintage fashion lover, so all the 50s and 60s vibe makes it all the more wonderful.

So, I am starting this with him and I hope you join me with your own knowledge of long hair painters, photographers, videos.... and so forth.
I believe we cannot share the photographs or videos here but we can share links to them and maybe even our own reenactments of famous long haired portraits and such... I know there are a few of you that have a lot to add here, so come on, do not be shy.

Here are a couple of links to his work and photography, enjoy!

section on The Rapunzel Long hair Archive website by Heiko and Ludmila (This website in itself is a treasure on very long hair art and such, I have a feeling it might have had some connection to the defunct german LHC)

By The International Long Hair Club

An American wedding photographer shared our passion for longhaired ladies and began to look for models in the 1950s. During the following 30 years he created some of the most beautiful photo collections ever done on this rare topic. He became a legendary photographer who understood as nobody else to catch the fascinating beauty of long hair with the lenses of his camera. Stan Shuttleworth passed away in the 1980s, but he lives on in his unique works.

I have found out that most of this stuff is buried away in the interwebs, so much knowledge and beautiful art.... so I will dig deeper and also will ask the gurus to give me material to post here, meanwhile guys, comment, share, post and visit the links if you so desire.

I have no sources to add but those pictures make me want to grow longer and change my wardrobe!

ETA: My mom grew up during that time also. I'm going to ask her if she ever knew of anyone with very long hair.
I also wonder if those women mostly wore their hair up and only took it down for the photos.

Yes! That is great, my mom had floor length hair all her life and never ever wore it down, so I think most of them did not but I am curious for more insight, it is a very rural part of the country and working the land, you had to keep it up anyway... so maybe it was different for higher society ladies or for the ones with more manageable lengths?

Groove Granny I have big hopes for this thread to become a good source of information and beauty.

That's amazing....our ladies wore their hair in the typical curled/waved 50's styles and was usually no longer than SL.
No wonder you were so inspired to grow super long :)....and gorgeous I may add :crush:

I think you are right Groove Granny. All those times my aunts made fun of me, my mother always stood by my side. She still has long hair but she asked my sister to cut it back to tbl a couple of years ago. She still wears it bunned all the way though.

Yes, in olden times it was considered immodest for a woman to leave her hair out or "show it off". I think this might be partly why it is so hard to find old pictures or paintings showing a woman's hair out.

If you enjoy the 18th or 19th century fashion, hair and such. You should search on Facebook for a young lady by the name of Kari Elizabeth. She is on some Facebook long hair groups too. She has floor length hair and she is part of a group that does civil war reenactments and organize balls. She sews her own gowns and she has a replica of Empress Sissi famous hair star pins. Her garments and hair are gorgeous. I don't know if the pictures are public though.

She is a sweetheart btw.

I've been wanting to share her page here but never found the right thread!

And I've gathered some pictures, illustration, paintings and victorian photos on a Pinterest board: https://pin.it/o4aasibsfbzj2f

Rare footage of a rehearsal where it seems she is wearing her hair in a low bun. What lovely figure she has. The way she carried herself is also so graceful. I am in love with her crown braids.

I mean it is pretty much an LHC film. At least one of those ladies was a member here and with you and the Beatnik guy involved too makes it a must see.

This thread is so neat! I didn’t realize until I read it and looked at the pictures the way I react to seeing long hair. I am stunned by the length and thickness of many of these heads of hair! It almost makes me want to go to terminal when I had just been fine at classic.

Dave you beat me to it. That was going be my next post tonight. I was re-watching it last night. It is such an underrated doc. Every long hair lover should watch it. I mean it is pretty much an LHC film. At least one of those ladies was a member here and with you and the Beatnik guy involved too makes it a must see.

Yes it seems this thread is a little more comprehensive. But the link is there for those who want to see long hair in art and drawings and such.

I hope this isn't a weird question. I love vintage long hair photos, but one thing I notice is everyone in these pictures have these rippling waves in their hair. Was it a style or a beauty standard of some sort to have hair that waved like that, and did they use some sort of method to have it that way? Or were most people in that time of an ethnicity with that hair type?

Either way, I just love the look so much, it's one thing I've always been curious about since they often look very similar.

*Black gothic doll* I think when it is just waves and not curls it was because they wore their hair up and braided every single day and only let it down for pictures. So those were braid waves... but I have no explanation for ringlets

Now I recall where I first heard about the Sisters and their hair tonic ;)

I have a full bottle of the Sutherland Sisters' hair growth promoter complete with original box and supplement. No doubt, as stated in the podcast , it was alcohol and water mixed, but still an interesting artefact. A few years ago it was exhibited along with other Sutherland Sisters memorabilia at the Frieze art exhibition in London. Does anyone know if there is a permanent exhibition of Sutherland Sisters memorabilia at Lockport or anywhere else for that matter ?

And another inspiration for us all, even if just to look at, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, who had ankle length hair and wore it in a myriad of styles, mostly known, for her beautiful crown braids. She had her personal hairdresser Fanny, who became quite important in her life, even at times, pretending to be her in social events so she could enjoy some peace and quite on her own. Here a quote from the article I am posting showing that we long hairs have not changed much and still have the same vanities and fears

It was not an easy job to work for the demanding empress, but on the other hand, Fanny earned the same as a University professor at the time! Fanny had her tricks to keep Sisi happy.

For example, she had a piece of adhesive tape hidden under her apron. During combing sessions she would secretly paste the remaining hair there out of the comb, so afterwards she could show the the Empress a clean comb.

It is also mentioned in various articles that her hair was massive, therefore, giving her headaches, sometimes they would use ribbon to lift it up, to give her a break... I do not know how much of this is factual and how much is legend, we all know how things are exaggerated throughout the years, kind of like Elizabeth Bathory, anyway, here it is a very interesting and not that long article about her.

I believe that those are braid waves. Many of the vintage hair styles were first done in braids and then wrapped up into buns. I have this same effect to my hair when I have had it in braids all day and let it loose, especially when in two braids. I notice this also has become more apparent in my hair now that I changed my hair care routine and am mostly water only and using bar shampoos occasionally, which I suppose might be similar to how they cared for their hair back then. Very interesting question you brought up!! I hadn't really paid too close attention to it before!

Does anyone know where the hair measurement traditionally starts? Just curious because they must have used some sort of reliable starting point.

Hi all!

As promised, here it is a new and exciting post, this time concerning long hair related literature,

First and foremost, let me add, that all this information was kindly shared with me by Norman, thus, thank you, you are a well of knowledge.

Lets get started, shall we?

First book, and the one Norman shared a few scans from is

"The Changing Face of Beauty" (1957), by Madge Garland

here it is a link to purchase it, if you are so inclined https://www.amazon.com/Changing-Beauty-Thousand-Years-Beautiful/dp/B0000CJVFP

The writer was a prominent Australian fashion figure and Journalist that became pretty famous in the UK... it seems to cover a great deal of how long hair was perceived throughout the ages and its symbolism. I could not really find a synopsis for this one but we have something better, real scans!

Delightful!

(I must mention that two of the scans contain nudity, therefore, I am only sharing links and not photos of those, do not panic, those of you that are a little bit more conservative, it is a Venus de Milo or Birth of Venus kind of nudity but I figured it is still not allowed here, but please, please click on the links and read, it is well, well worth it.
I am sorry to those of you that are new and cannot yet visit profiles or see photos, you will be able too, soon.
The album is specifically for this thread and it is public.)

The next book on our menu for this evening is:

" Hair : Sex, Society , Symbolism." (1971) by Wendy Cooper,

this one, seems to be also available via Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Hair-Society-Symbolism-Wendy-Cooper/dp/0812814290

The synopsis:

Classic book on hair that will grow on you! Lots of interesting facts like the rate of growth of a man's beard has to do with his sexual activity. Explores questions like... Are hairy men more virile? Do gentlemen prefer blondes?
Do blondes have more fun?
How long does hair grow and how long does it live?
Why did the ancient Greeks sacrifice hair to the gods?
Includes seventy-two color plates and 171 black-and-white plates - illustrates this readable, knowledgeable, and eminently enjoyable jaunt through man's and women's close association with hair.

And a nice scan, Norman is quite sure the floor length lady here is the French opera star of the late 1900s, Aline Vallandri and we might talk about her in a near post in the future. They mention how such long hair must be a burden and how that could be the reason for the short bobs in the 20s, of course me and Norman disagree.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35472&d=1550026016

Next book seems to be harder to find, it is

"Daring Do's: A History of Extraordinary Hair" (1994) Mary Trasko

It is not available to purchase online, only in the store (?) via Barnes and Noble but here is the link anyway https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/daring-dos-mary-trasko/1129188346?ean=9782080135490&st=AFF&2sid=Goodreads,%20Inc_2227948_NA&sourceId=AFFGoodreads,%20Inc

Here it is a bit of a synopsis from GoodReads

The symbolism and significance of hair have fascinated historians, writers, and artists Erotic or obscene, and sometimes an extravagant indicator of social status, there is, however, a strange duality in attitudes towards hair that has led some cultures to relegate it to the private realm, concealing it from view with elaborate wigs or veils. Daring Do's tells the story of the most astonishing coiffures of Western civilization, from ancient times when the marble "wigs" on Roman portrait busts were changed with every passing fashion in hairstyles, to the magnificent creations of the last days of the French monarchy, when ladies of the court rivaled one another with absurd, outrageous, and even allegorical coiffures. The 19th century witnessed extreme transformations in hairstyles, from the short mass of unruly curls held back by a black headband made famous by the beautiful Juliette Recamier to the long, flowing tresses of the Pre-Raphaelite muses. The 1920s brought the bob, and it has been said that women's decision to cut their hair was as important a step towards independence as obtaining the right to vote. Today, hairstyles remain at the forefront of fashion. Elaborate hair designs, often employing artificial hair, made a comeback during the 1980s, and the final chapter on contemporary fantasy coiffures illustrates styles that could rival even the greatest creations of the 18th century. Mary Trasko's entertaining history of extraordinary hair is interwoven with charming anecdotes about the elegant women who influenced the styles of their time. Men's hairstyles remarkable enough to merit inclusion will show that the obsession with coiffure is by no means a purely feminine folly.

So?

Do you own any of these, have you heard about them?

You all excited and itching to shares thoughts and ideas?

Bring them on!

TatsuOni
February 13th, 2019, 12:53 AM
A big thank you to Norman for sharing this with us!

I think that sure, some women thought that it was nice to cut their hair short in the 20s. There must have been people back then, just like there is now, who preferred short hair, or thought that it was a time consuming chore to take care of long hair. But personally I don't think that this nor to get rid of the heavy hair or anything similar, was the main reason. I think that it was the trend. People have always been big on following trends and they still are. Perhaps even more so "back in the day".

Just like I think that what felt like every other woman and girl bleached their hair (in Sweden and other countries) a few years ago (it was extreme for a while. More than now.), because blond was a bit "extra in".

We can still see the hair length go in waves among those who follow trends. Although the longest trends I've seen here have been waist to tailbone. And then every once in a while comes a trend of bobs and such.

That's just my thoughts on the subject.

Ligeia Noire
February 13th, 2019, 06:21 AM
I agree Tatsuoni but I also think it reflected a change of mind and lifestyle too. The first world war also deepened that frame of mind by taking away the somewhat laid back and naivety/ fantasy atmosphere/mind/styling and installing a simpler, more modest and practical look. Both in appearance and mind. For good and bad.

This thread is such a treasure trove of long hair inspiration! Thanks so much, Ligeia Noire, for starting it and everybody for contributing so much hair inspiration from both art and life. :heartbeat

Since Empress Sisi and others were mentioned up-thread, another somewhat famous 19th c. member of royalty with long hair was Princess Louise Victoire d'Orléans: https://i-h1.pinimg.com/474x/a1/37/9c/a1379ce2590399e291bb3cd25b98f05d--very-long-hair-hair-raising.jpg?b=t, https://i.pinimg.com/originals/64/05/b9/6405b971f3af51734004e26577e2b89e.jpg

And Aline Vallandri was a famous 19th c. opera singer who was known for her extra long hair. This article covers her hair care advice, as well as pictures: https://www.beautifulwithbrains.com/aline-vallandris-hair-care-secrets/

There is also a cool "long hair in art" thread that might be worth linking here: https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=131653

And and there is this article about very long hair in Victorian era with tons of pictures that I found pretty interesting:
I'm particularly curious about this picture with a huuuuge comb: https://mondrian.mashable.com/wp-content%252Fuploads%252F2015%252F08%252Fmorehair-1.jpg%252Foriginal.jpg?signature=n8D0M8Uzpm2Tx3CVU 3Iw5CNum9k=&source=http%3A%2F%2Fa.amz.mshcdn.com It would be nice to find a comb like that, but with sparser teeth.

Ligeia Noire I love this thread! Thank you so much for creating it!

I watch a lot of movies (haha, maybe too much!) and I like to find out how the costume designers come up with their ideas but I always think it's such a shame when they don't include the hairstyles as they are part of the costume too. In the movie Crimson Peak the character Lucille Sharpe has ankle length hair but you barely see it. Seems like a waste to make a wig to that extreme and barely show it. Jessica Chastain who plays Lucille said the wigs were very heavy and put strain on her neck and back but that the discomfort and pain they caused helped her play her character.

The costume designer made design boards for each character and around minute 14:28 you catch a glimpse of her hair from a deleted scene but not the full length. It goes on about the corset and then at minute 15:36 you see the story board with a sketch of her with hair beyond floor length. Another view comes at 15:57 but still not the full length.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvqb-UzBG04&t=923s

In this video you can catch a very quick look at at her ankle length hair but it's only a couple seconds and you may have to watch it a couple time to really see it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkG4hDwRSzc

Also, I have been trying and trying to figure out how to recreate some of Empress Sissi's hairstyles and I just can't figure out how it's done. Looks like a lot more research to be done!

I know what you mean. I've been wondering about her hairstyle for ages and started a thread about it a few years back: https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=124091 Folks posted some good ideas/videos there.

I think her style can be approximated by a combination of half-up coronet/headband braid(s) and some braids in the back either looped or pinned together to create that braided mass in the back. It won't look exactly the same though...
Maybe a combination of a wide (say, 7-strand) braid in the middle of the back and two simple English braids from either side, pinned to the wider braid can create that braided "veil" in the back. Plus a coronet or a headband braid in the front.

When I google contemporary wearable images, I find some Andrea arc691's braided & looped styles to be a good structural base for re-creating Sisi's style:

*Heavenly tresses* I'vewatched that film in the theatre. Not that great but it was worth it for the wardrobe and the hair. The mansion!
I was thinking the same thing and telling my husband such hair should have had a little bit more emphasis and I could never really find good pictures online either.

*Metor* some articles were saying her hairdresser would use hair pieces to add to her updos made from her own hair. So, one would have to have the same trick to be able to come up with something close. Unless you're Aliia Nasirova ;)

Anyway, as mentioned on my major post with the book scans (unfortunately, it seems no one heard about or had in their collection)
Today I'll make another lengthy one about our French opera singer star Aline with floor lenght hair. Stay tuned.

Here is some information about the French Opera singer with floor length hair, whose photo was in my previous post, Aline Vallandri, some other users also mentioned her before, specially her tips for long healthy hair. I am, again, only relaying Norman's words.

Norman:

Two decades ago, I bought an antique set of books entitled "Every woman's Encyclopaedia" published in Great Britain in 1912. This encyclopaedia is a manual for the newly emerging "modern" independent woman along with those of the upper classes who read it out of pure interest. The topics are many and interesting and it does enable one to experience how a person from that time might have thought about various topics. One of those topics is the perceived notion of beauty in Edwardian times and with that aim in mind well known personalities of the time gave beauty tips . One of those was the well known opera star of the time, Aline Vallandri.
(I wrote out the section many years ago and sent it to Jennifer Bahney who at the time was in charge of the now defunct web site Longhairlovers.com
It was aimed at women and gave advice about general hair care with a bias towards longhair. There is in fact a link to the info I sent here on the Mane Forum. Unfortunately the link is now dead and the web site no longer exists. I do not know what happened to it. Jennifer Bahney now appears to be concentrating on writing and has, in fact, written a historical novel about Elizabeth of Austria.)

The good news is that the article by Miss Vallandri is now available online. The whole of the Encyclopedia is available to the public. There are many parts of it which pertain to hair. The section about Miss Vallandri is in Volume 7 pp 4416-4419. Obviously she was a person of great renown in 1912 , but with the passing of time has faded from the consciousness of the general public. Her hair care hints are interesting if not always believable to the modern person. Her enthusiasm about having such a symbol of beauty at that time is very evident as it no doubt was to her readers of the time who were obviously overwhelmingly female. The edition on line I think is from 1910. The third link below should open at the correct page and show Miss Vallandri. The "From the Bygone" link below also shows Miss Vallandri when older. It is the last of the pics shown. I bought some pictures of her from this period on e-bay which I think must be the 1920's or 30's. I also bought some original 78 rpm recordings.

Ligeia--Yes, even if a movie isn't that great sometimes the wardrobe and setting kind of make up for it :) Your book scans are just lovely! I had no idea such a collection was out there. I just finished reading about Aline Vallandri's hair care routine and am amazed to see that is has persisted over 100 years later. Except maybe for the mercury part :hmm:

I guess for Sissi styles, the only thing to do is make a few braids and see what I can come up with. I'm pretty positive they won't be anywhere near as thick as hers though! I watched a bunch of clips from the movie that was made too and I believe there is one style I can accomplish. Hah, one of about 20 is good right?

sumidha--I know right? And youtube is a trap so I could stay up all night thinking of more movies and costumes I want to know about but so disappointing that they don't include the hairstyles :(

Hi all!

Time to keep on with our Super long hair quest.

Aline Vallandri is back to our pages with never seen photographs and an article, kindly scanned by Norman to share here with us.

It seems there is not much information about her and what she did with her life, apart from the common mentions of her being an Opera singer and having those handful of tips on how to take proper care of long hair..

About the photographs I will quote Norman:

One of the pics, a postcard, is obviously from the same era as the photographs which I purchased ie circa 1921. It would be so interesting to find out about her life after that date. The two pics of Miss Vallandri at an earlier date were also purchased on e-bay. They are from French magazines circa 1912. The other picture shows Miss Vallandri in a piece from the French magazine, "Femina", entitled "Cantatrices de l'opera Comique". The text is in Fench but shows Miss Vallandri and Mary Garden. Paradoxically, Mary Garden is wearing a very long wig in her role of Melisande from the Debussy opera "Pelleas et Melisande"..

Such beautiful photos, so delicate and light and full of romance. Enjoy your read and pictures and as always share with us your opinions and insight about Aline.

Some short information based on this book. https://www.lesleydowner.com/books/geisha-the-remarkable-truth-behind-the-fiction/

They we're high class prostitutes in Japan and when geisha's (who aren't prostitutes) first came into the picture, their looks where considered much more plain/simple compared to the oirans. At first the oirans would wear their hair loose/tied with a ribbon (often it would reach the floor) and oiled. From around 1650 they would start to wear elaborate updos with ornaments that could weigh around 5 kg.

Pepita, the Andalusian dancer

I am going to, again, quote Norman and also add excerpts he provided from books about her or the daughters and the titles of the aforementioned books.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35913&d=1552241747

(This picture shows Pepita at the bottom and I cropped Sisi from the top to not steal the attention :p)

I have first found out about her from the above passage in Madge Garland's book about beauty. Vita (Victoria) Sackville West was the grand daughter of Pepita and published this picture in her book about her grandmother.
She was the wife of Harold Nicholson and lover of Virgina Woolf, among others. I am very surprised that the story of her grandmother has not been turned into a film.

Pepita was a Spanish gypsy dancer and the mistress of Lionel Sackville-West who was a British diplomat in Spain. She had children with him but they never married. One of the children, born in 1862, was Lady Victoria Sackville-West. (Mother of Vita ).
Lord Sackville was eventually named as British Minister to the United States and apparently Victoria became one of the most popular girls in Washington at the time. The above picture is from that period and could, in some way, explain her popularity!
She was obviously not shy to show off her natural adornment!
Although she was illegitimate, she did eventually become mistress of the family seat at Knole, England by marrying her first cousin, also called Lionel and thus she became Lady Sackville by a circuitous route!

The genes for long hair obviously came from the female line of descent. Vita writes of her grandmother Pepita's hair in the biography she wrote of her.

Pepita's mother "Catalina lavished on her daughter, the fierce possessive love which Latin women do often display towards their children....In those early days of her widowhood ...she had the girl to sleep in her bed and was never tired of combing and dressing the magnificent hair, which even in that southern province, was remarkable for its beauty. Catalina's sister was of the opinion that there was no more beautiful girl in Andalusia. "I have seen her when she got up from bed and put on her dressing-jacket, and with her hair down she was more beautiful than when she was dressed and adorned."".

This description is given by a friend of Pepita's

"As a young woman her (Pepita) hair was black and very shiny. It is common in Spain for women to have long and abundant hair, but in Pepita's case it was exceptionally so. It was at Pepita's house that I saw her combing her hair......." Poor Isabel was not the only one, who with admiration, watched Pepita combing that marvellous hair. Manuel Guerrero, who was a ballet -master, later saw her combing it at an hotel window, and thought it worth while to record his impression: "Long, thick, luxuriant , it reached down below the knee" .

But that was much later; that was after delirious audiences in Germany had forced her to let it down on the stage as they refused to believe that it was not false.

Another description occurred in Copenhagen.

"The first time I saw her there was one day when I was passing her hotel. I saw a number of persons looking up at the windows and on investigating the cause, I found that Pepita was combing out her hair in sight of them and that they were all astonished at its magnificence and length."

Pepita's daughter Victoria whose "skin was always ravishing and unlined". About five foot seven and a half she had her mother's height and was slim, with a tiny waist. Dark blue eyes, wonderful eyes according to the reporters , with long dark lashes. Masses of thick black hair, (the dancers's inheritance in its abundance, but darker than Pepita's ) done up demurely, not in a showy pompadour but looking as if she had done it herself with her long hands : "just pulled it up and struck in a comb or two to keep it in place."

Books of reference and which include the above quotes are :

"Pepita " (1947) V. Sackville West . (The Hogarth Press)

"Lady Sackville. A Biography." (1978) Susan Mary Allsop (Doubleday)

"The Inheritance. The Story of Knole and the Sackvilles" (2010) Robert Sackville-West (Bloomsbury)

"The Disinherited. The Story of Family, Love and Betrayl" (2014) Robert Sackville-West (Bloomsbury)

The family seat of Knole can be visited by the general public.

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/knole

Post Scriptum: Norman is right, it could easily be turned into a film, what a life...
I guess, even though, women kept their hair very long back then, it was not common or even ever seen let down, therefore, as of today, people were not accustomed to its sight and surely Pepita was not keeping it a secret :)

I can only imagine, her combing it at her window, it reminds me of Aliia letting it down in the beaches of Spain or in the Streets of Paris, people still react with the same astonishment, I would too, what a sight to behold.

Again, thanks Norman for this treat and the books' titles and I hope this can bring some more attention to this treat and some more discussion.

Enjoy!

Dave gave me a great idea, a post about hair contests... so I was going around trying to gather information and found out something awesome.
The website Angel Fire, which I believe to be admin/creator of the German TLHC, has a collection of participants/winners of long hair contests since 1910!!!
And ending at 2010, it is a shame that all these related blogs and websites are all defunct, but, at least, they are still accessible.

Please, do check, it is awesome

http://www.angelfire.com/art/rapunzellonghair/rapunzellonghairarchive/contests.htm

If the archive was still going and if Aliia participated on the latest Ukrainian or Lithuanian hair contest, she would have surely won, she has probably the longest hair in Europe, at 245 cm!

Here it is her latest snippet video from instagram!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwsClRJIpe7/

Some of these ladies from Angel Fire's chronography, I still remember and recognize, pretty amazing, how long some of them grew their hair... There are at least 3 ladies with hair reaching 3 meters and a bunch of them with 2 meters plus!
Of course ladies like DYQ, Lady Grace and Cindy are there...
I particularly love to see the lady in the twenties showing how not everyone had short bobs with her more than 3 meters of hair and the beautiful wide picture in China of all the contestants up in a made up pulpit covered with a white sheet or something (?) with their hair down.
I would never participate in any kind of contest but I love to see the pictures and videos of all the different textures and lengths and ages displayed there.

To end the post, here it is an example of such a competition in China, this one is pretty artsy ha?

That's a cool video, Ligeia Noire - thanks for finding and sharing it here!

In a general sense I think the places in which these contests occur are within cultures that value the innate beauty of hair that is allowed to reach its full potential. There has been a mindset perpetuated within "modern" societies (within the past hundred years) that having such long hair (or even anything longer than about waist-length) is incompatible with being able to thrive in (and support a) modern society, but the many members of this community demonstrate that that mindset simply isn't true. (My sense is that that mindset is starting to erode - but in time we'll see how that turns out.)

Well, that's my :twocents:

My contribution can't be classified as very long-haired by LCH-standards... I can always remove it if it really doesn't fit in here.

Anyway, picture of the young Japanese-Chinese actress and singer Yoshiko Yamaguchi, also known as Li Xianglan, Ri Koran or Shirley Yamaguchi. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. I recommend reading about her life, she was a really interesting person.

She had fabulous-looking hair, although this is the only picture I could find where hair hair is long and down.

One thought on the long hair competitions. How do they measure the hair? Or rather from where?

Most of them actually measure from the top of the head and not forehead.....let me see if if i can find a video

I came across this picture that Martin Kjäldström took of his wife Gerda in 1910. It's very interesting how back then long, freely flowing hair was considered something that needed to be hidden and "constrained" in public because it was considered erotic and symbolized sexuality and fertility. I even read about old Finnish beliefs about hair and how you could ruin a woman's chances of marriage if you had ill will and touched her hair or hair ribbon. So better keep your hair up... Some said that you can make your hair grow more if you burn the hair that you trim ;)

Begemot

Intimate is the perfect word to describe it :) No one but her husband and maybe other family members were supposed to see her like that but here we are much later, complete strangers admiring her hair and that moment between a wife and a husband.

I wonder how my hairdresser would react if I asked her to hand over the hair she trims away next time I see her...

It's always so interesting to see how much things have changed through the ages regarding hair. Like women's clothing and what should be covered up vs. what should be exposed. Now I always have my hair up but only because it's too long to wear down. I used to wear it down all the time and didn't think twice about it and had no idea about the different beliefs and practices regarding long hair.

This video popped up on fb the other day and I had forgotten all about Jane Child. I remember thinking her braids were the most amazing hair I'd ever seen but I wasn't sure about the spikes on top. I thought it was awesome though that she created her own unique look and seemed very confidant about it.

While on youtube, I have found this video of a super long haired lady in the 1950s. Everything she does and even her hair texture reminds me of my mother, when she had floor length hair, how she washes it and how many Upins she still uses today, even though she cut it to classic.
A precious video, a shame it is so so short. Enjoy!

There's just something about old time photos of women with long hair :) These are circa 1903

Like this woman I posted, her hair is gorgeous and she looks kind of mysterious (the hair draped over her helps creating that air of mystery) and has a perfect Mona Lisa smile :D Agreed! That would be an awesome LHC-project for someone.

One thing I really notice looing at these is that long hair—particularly hair that has just been brushed how—simply hangs differently than shorter hair.

If I brushed my hair out in the way most of these pictures show, I would probably call it "frizzy." It floofs up some (both on me and on the pictures models) and I would probably put my hair up after that—I probably wouldn't wear it out that way. After looking through a few pages of pictures, I didn't see anyone with truly straight hair, they all had at least a little wave to it.

Seeing these pictures framing hair like that in this beautiful and historical way makes me feel a bit better about when my hair does that.

Don't know if you have seen the pics yet, but here's my find:

In the Victorian era, a Western woman's hair was considered an important part of her appearance. On both sides of the Atlantic, it marked her status and her femininity.

An important rite of passage for an adolescent girl during this time was the moment she began to wear her hair up. Previously it would have been worn loose or in plaits and tied up with a ribbon.

A woman's hair was worn coiled and curled in a variety of elaborate hairstyles, sometimes embellished with jewels or feathers. These changed with shifting fashions, but the hair was not cut unless absolutely necessary.

As in many societies, religious doctrine was a factor in the policing of Victorian women’s hair, mandating that it be covered or done up, particularly if the woman was married. Letting one’s hair down was commonly seen as brazen and immodest, even sinful.

To a Victorian observer, photographs of women with long, loose hair would be particularly titillating.

Among the fashionable middle and upper classes of Victorian society, a lady’s hair became the focal point of sexual interest, the primary expression of her femininity. For the poorer classes, maintaining long tresses amid the disease and poor hygiene of the time was highly impractical. Many women resorted to selling their hair for cash — not a problem if they typically wore it short or covered anyway.

Recently I've been watching a Chinese serie on Netflix called "Once upon a time in Lingjian mountain." What I like more than the story line is all of the amazing historically inspired long hair updos. https://www.google.com/search?q=once+upon+a+time+in+lingjian+mountain&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjz1fzzrPTmAhUKkMMKHQJFAFkQ_AUoAXoECBMQA w&biw=1920&bih=966#imgrc=sFGUyZtPMECOlM:

Of course you can't see too many of them by googling, since "normal" people doesn't upload photos of peoples hair from behind. And no one uploads photos of the "walker ons". :p

I haven't done it since above knee length, so I don't know if I personally could do it anymore at my current length but it was definitely possible at shorter lengths.

That Etruscan hairstyle is quite interesting. I suppose it might not be completely impossible to do on oneself, depending on your braiding skills and length of hair, but it'd definitely be complex. I guess these intricate styles were much more practical for women who had servants/slaves that did their hair for them.

I wish Janet Stephens did tutorials of historical hairstyles from other locations/cultures too. I've wondered about how to do some of the hairstyles depicted in ancient Chinese paintings, like this one: https://asia.si.edu/object/F1916.42/

I guess if she's a historian (I assume? I've not really watched her videos) she would have a specialism :) but I agree, it would be cool if there were videos doing the same thing for other cultures, even if by a different historian.

Yes, it seems that she apparently specializes in ancient Roman hairstyles, but as you said, it would be interesting to see recreations of historical hairstyles from other cultures (even if it were someone else doing it). Some of the hairstyles in the ancient Chinese paintings look so interesting/intricate and I wonder how they were constructed.

It has been a long time since I have made an informative post, however, today I have the time and the material.
Norman shared these scans with me and I am thrilled to share them here.
A unique artifact this is.
A book called ''Hair Culture'' published in 1922 by author Bernarr Macfadden. reading a bit about him on the interwebs, he was probably the starter of the fitness and healthy body thing, it seems like his interest was head to toe because he ends up writing a book about all things hair, no more no less.
It seems like a glossary about good hair practices, hair facts and curiosities, hair science, hair growth, hair tools, hair related ailments and solutions and so much more.
I will share what dear Norman kindly shared with me and then try to find myself a copy of this book on ebay or something.
Regardless, do read these, it is most interesting.
If you are a book lover, hair lover or simply a bygone era lover.
Again, many thanks Norman!

Such an interesting book, Ligeia! It would be good to see some of the illustrations too. I love old books like that! :)
