I'm not sure if this link has been posted yet, perhaps so, although I just came by it on Pinterest and wow these ladies have amazing hair!! I am enamored and these lengths must have taken so much dedication!! Some of the pictures even gives a glimpse of a comb, which I find interesting. :D

Some of the comments on the blog post though made me sad!

The Hair Culture book got to me in amazing condition for a first edition, I took some photos of the images and a couple of articles, I will post a couple here to sparkle your curiosity but there are more in a public photo album on my profile, if you follow the link.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=13799

Have not ready it yet, just skimmed the pages but one thing is clear, hair has been in the center of attention and care since the dawn of times and what all we think to be new, our ancestors were already aware and doing.
Really excited to ready it with care, take a peek at the album if you are so inclined, gentlemen are contemplated too and so are children.

What? That's weird. Are we a topic of conversation on YouTube?

It was a comment to a comment I posted on one of her videos. I told her I was Ylva (because my name on YouTube is different, it's from gaming) and that I hoped she was okay. The random hate comment was removed after posting it, probably by the writer themselves, but I still saw it in my notifications.

If you have to say such a thing anonymously rather than being able to stand behind your words, it's not something I can take seriously. So it doesn't matter to me whether they regret it or not.

My only guess is perhaps her views on some topics are not fully suited for the site, not so "politically correct", but I can only speculate. Weird about the YT comment, maybe it was a random spammer or got the wrong video/comment.
I also hope she comes back. If I closed my account and *really* wanted to come back I guess I could get a new ip?
Anyhow...
YT is rather lame because I'm not interested in watching her hair, I liked her blog posts and talking.

Marginally off-topic, but one of my favourite photographers is Elizabeth Gadd. I find her photos incredibly soothing, and they're all centred around a main theme: a woman with waist/TBL hair standing alone (or with a dog) in a magnificent wilderness. Worth checking out, if not for hair inspiration, then for all-round beautiful photography!

As far as artists are concerned, I also really like Chie Yoshii.
Her art is quite dark and spooky, but I love the mix of bold primary colours, ghostly-white subjects, and magic realism (and, of course, the super-long hair)
Here are a couple of her paintings

It is undated but the collection is mainly from around 1915-1935, from Japan, so it likely falls within that date range. Very beautiful, just had to share here because you all can appreciate it!

hi everyone.
I just had an idea:
how about mentioning general fiction books where updos and hairstyles of the past are described. I mean how some people in 1990's and 2000's knew about good hair care and protective hairstyles like the beebut when since the 70's people kept their hair either long and damaged or short?
I'm asking this because I remember my high school friend with her hair reaching tailbone length. she snipped few hairs but I wasn't even alowed to touch my hair, let alone do something with it because my mom screamed till her lungs hurt "it gets so greasy!". I didn't know there were individual split ends until LHC (I was 27) and I can cut them to mentain the length. how did people knew about long hair care anyway?
but let's mention general fiction about protective styles. I'm looking forward to your replies.

If I recall, in One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, there is a mention of a girl or woman with hair down to the floor or maybe knee lol.

What I think is noteworthy is the taper and the long tail! More realistic than we tend to see, even thought it's still a romanticized image.

You're welcome :)

I would recommend reading The Tale of Genji/ Genji Monogatari if you like that sort of thing. Great historical book and hair is mentioned a lot, long styles, descriptions, they talk about trimming it and the condition of it on different ladies... really great book if you are into Japanese culture. SO many details. On clothes, hair, poetry, way of life back then ect.

Very cool find! I really liked this part "The indigenous faith of Shinto regards one’s body and physical attributes as a gift from the ancestors, handed down from generation to generation. In that sense, hair symbolises life and continuity – and maintaining it in good order was regarded as a devotional duty." And the huge hair rope

Yes the hair rope was crazy to me imagining them weaving all these hairs into a rope and how much the hair would have meant to those that donated it. And that the shrine was built using the hair rope to hoist beams ect. is impressive, using the hair that had so much meaning and power attached to it to build a shine is just amazing to think of the positive energy going in to that to create a sacred place.

Carries hair that is a good picture of Cher!

I particularly like the first one, where the woman on the right looks like she's proudly showing off her friend on the left's hair! It feels rare to see a smile in an antique photo like that, too - they both seem shyly excited to be being photographed.

Interesting how attitudes were quite different back then, centred around the church and society ruling how women should behave.

On topic: Wow! Those Victorian pictures are wonderful. I confess though that curly fringes (bangs) amuse me - they remind me of awful 80s/90s hair I've seen, and some of them with the right amount of hair look like the posy/bow you'd find stuck on presents (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51KG5wDuUmL._AC_.jpg) I am a little affronted by the author of that article calling long hair and infrequent washing 'disturbing' but the pictures are awesome enough that we can celebrate them regardless of the surrounding text :o

Vintage photographs do indeed appear eerie. I suppose the film has deteriorated over time, but also, some of the subjects in group photographs probably didn’t remain as still as they should. In the early days, subjects had to remain still for up to an hour, depending on the Technology. No wonder you don’t see them smiling!

You'll have to scroll a bit to see it, but I really liked the hair in this (http://samla.raa.se/xmlui/bitstream/handle/raa/3122/2006_085.pdf) picture at a museum in Stockholm in 1908 (pg 6 of the document, page number 89). I don't see the back of the "gibson girl" hairstyle much, and it was neat to see that it's as...shall we say, varied in texture as mine. Little bumps, gaps, poufy places, and frizzies, the works :)

It is interesting viewing the Gibson Girl style from the back, seeing how they were constructed. The styles reminds me of those old fashioned cold compresses that were used to relieve a head ache.

Most of those photos aren't on film because it hadn't been invented yet! Photos were taken on glass plates covered with a layer of light-sensitive chemical. That produced a negative image (like a black-and-white film negative) which was then used to produce a positive image on photographic paper. In many cases the paper has probably deteriorated. The original negatives are probably gone, since after printing acceptable prints the glass plate would be cleaned off to be reused for another photo.

There's a film I adore that has gorgeous representations of long hair: the 2018 Japanese animated film "Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms".

Other than being a fantastic film (although trigger warning it deals with issues like war, grief, loss, abuse, suicide and other heavy topics, so while I would definitely recommend it, it can be a challenging watch), it centres around a fictional group of people called the Iorph, who live for hundreds of years and record their history by weaving a special cloth (called hibiol). They also all have extremely long, silver-blonde hair, which seems to denote age and rank to an extent, with the oldest members of the clan having the longest hair.

As someone who is partially growing my own hair out for spiritual reasons, I really connected with the use of long hair to denote the passage of time and the connection to heritage and memory, which is shown throughout the film: the Iorph women typically wear their hair down, but when one character is captured, she wears it in a bun for the rest of her captivity, and Maquia herself (the protagonist) spends much of the film away from her people, and keeps her hair short and/or dyed red.

Anyway, I've attached a few images below.

Not exactly sure if this counts since it’s not film exactly, but it’s cool! Debussy’s opera Pellas and Melisande is a doomed love story in which the heroine, Melisande, has floor+ length hair. In the most famous scene she lets her hair hang out the window of a tower, Repunzel-style, while her lover Pellas caresses it because he can’t quite reach her . It’s supposed to be a very romantic and sensual moment. Except he ties her hair to the branches of a tree so she won’t leave him which just sounds like a recipe for tangles.

I did some calculations based on the libretto (yes I’m a nerd) and estimated that her hair is about 5 and a half feet long, assuming they’re both average height.

Here’s an Imgur album of screencaps of the scene in various productions: https://imgur.com/a/yEYxTYP

ETA: I actually made my avatar a drawing of a different scene in the same opera, where she lets her hair down and it falls into a well.
