By popular demand

Stealing Ashflower's post from last year because it's perfect :)

Here's the 2017 thread for the Monthly Project, continuing from the 2016 thread!

The goal is to take a length picture each month to see your progress throughout the year. But you don't have to take one every month! Bimonthly and quarterly length shots work too, anything to show your progress. =)

Here are some tips to participate:

* Wear a t-shirt/sweater/dress/other with horizontal stripes, or some sort of design, for an easier visual measurement of the monthly growth. You could also draw some lines on a white shirt and write the inch/cm measurement of each line. If you're feeling creative, you could draw lines on your back to designate milestones (SL, APL, BSL, WL, HL, TBL, Classic, Knee, etc.). If you don't have a striped garment (and you don't feel like showing us your artistic nude backs), simply wearing the same shirt for each picture helps for comparison.

* Try to pick a designated area of your house/apartment/garden/hobbit hole/other to take the pictures in every time, to compare your growth over the months. Changing up the background scenery in the pictures can make the growth hard to tell sometimes.

* Try to set your camera/phone on the same surface for each picture, like a table, shelf, book pile, aquarium, etc. Try to memorize the angle where your photos are taken, and position yourself in a similar distance every time. Use a countdown timer setting if your camera has one, and if you use the zoom feature, set the zoom level in the same place every time.

Everyone is welcome to join. Happy growing!

I'm going to add:
* In particular, it's totally fine to join midway through the year. The sooner you join, the sooner you will have an amazing photo strip of your progress. Jump in!
* It's nice to comment on other people's posts in this thread! This type of thread can turn into people posting pics and not commenting, or into nice friendy type posts. We all enjoy the photos but we all enjoy acknowledgement too and it's nice to check in together - I've met some of my fave LHC people through regular pic threads like this.

Wee!! :joy: I can't wait for this thread to start rocking and rolling. 2017 is going to be a major growth year as I go from BSL to waist, it's going to be so fun! I need to find the perfect shirt, hmm.

Any chance we could get a list of everyone participating on the first post? Actually, that may get out of hand, I don't know.

My goal is to take pictures of my hair on the first day of every month. Now, let's hope I can stick with it haha

samanthaa
December 15th, 2016, 09:57 AM
One of my goals is to also try to measure my length monthly (we'll see if I actually follow through on this). For those of you who have done the same, how do you measure? I typically drape my soft tape measure from my hairline at the front, over the back of my head, and then down my back and try to pin the very ends against it with my fingernail...but this yields inconsistent results. I get the "general" measurement, but I don't think it's very exact.

I was planning to this and post to the 2017 no trim but I will just post it here. I definitely want to see what an average years growth would be for me.

I'm new to LHC so I've never done one of these but I'm excited! I love seeing all the pictures of people's progress, it gives me hope for my hair.

I started with an around ear length bob in September and this is my current legnth. I'm hoping to reach APL by may/June.

Thank you! My hair has always grown pretty fast, when I keep it short I cut it every other month in order to maintain the cut.

However, I have found a hair mask that my hair seems to LOVE and I think it's definitely his Ben it a little boost. I apply aloe and peppermint or lavender oil to my scalp and massage that in and then coat my hair in coconut and avocado hot oil and put a split end treatment oil on the ends of my hair. This gave me an half inch boost when I did it the first time and now I use it because it makes my hair ridiculously soft. The aloe along with the essential oils being massaged into my scalp most definitely help growth. The oils I use to help stop breakages and it helps a ton with hair fall too.

I don't think it's a magical serum that's going to make my hair grow 10" in one week but I do think it helps to stimulate the scalp and keeps my hair growing along at a good rate.

Happy New Year! Here's my start photos for 2017. It's pretty short but it had to have a big chop because I lost a heap of hair from shedding and stress. It's above shoulders when dry so haven't bothered with the measuring shirt just yet. Hoping to grow out that "triangle head" look that I loathe and have put up with for nearly a year

I planned to measure my hair monthly this year, I'll take a picture too and post in here, after seeing some of the progress in here, it'll make for some good motivation! Just have to find a shirt to wear!

I want to do this this year, but I think I might do it on the 15th. Just to give my trim a little time to not look so freshly cut. I would like to see if I gain much length this year.

Hi Michetta. From memory you need to do a certain amount of posts before you can add pics. I think it is 5?

Yay, so I will try to take a pic today! I wonder though whether I will keep up with this during the year. Right now I've been active on LHC because I'm studying and rewarding myself with LHC time. I need to set a reminder on my phone or something.

That's some crazy growth Silverbleed!
I'm sooo happy I took pictures! If I didn't do that, I would have thought I barely made any progress at all. But the opposite is true!

Wow, Silverbleed! Great progress. It's fascinating to see how your curl pattern has developed.

I took a length picture today after I clarified for January, busy working on deadlines so it may be a while before I upload it.
Yeah it's almost as if in the first picture the waves weren't able to form fully and needed more length. Now I'm seeing the result, I'm convinced I need length unlike what everyone else (family, hairdressers) is saying. I can't wait till my layers also catch up, they're still a bit awkward. I know I'll never go short again lol.

I'm in love with your hair, Silverbleed :crush:
Awwww thank you :flower:

So after much debate, I am joining in here. I'll try to do monthly photos, but it might be only every two months since my curls don't allow for much visual length. I also need to remember to get a brighter bulb for the bathroom and to wear a light colored shirt!

Wow Mimha! What wonderful progress!

Yay Pili you are joining too! :) I am not sure if I should do bi monthly as well because of my waves, but I probably won't be able to help myself and will take a picture every month anyway. :)

Because my hair is wavy, I decided to do my pictures on wash day, when its at its waviest to try to have some continuity. Yes, it will look shorter, but hopefully I will still see some growth. :) I'm excited to be joining in with everyone!

So I am just starting my 3rd year here. I average 3/4" a month in growth, but because I am trimming out bleached Henna my progress is slow.
I will be taking pics with freshly washed hair to see progress with my waves. Right now the waves are just brushing BSL, although my hair is about an 1" past BSL stretched. Hoping to get to waist wavy by the end of the year.

I find it really odd that all my measurements between BSL and BCL are 3 1/2" apart. strange. Anyone else have measurements like this?

RavenRose I get really weird measurements too. My BSL is only 19" and my waist is only a few inches from there (25" I think?). I'm also 5'10". My height must all be in my legs. Or maybe I wear my bras weird. But you have truly beautiful hair! I love the wave! :)

Beautiful hair colour, marvel-lover! And yes, there's always the possibility that wrong size bra band (causing bras riding up in the back) gives wrong bsl :)

19" seems really short for BSL. Are you measuring from the your hair line over the back of your head? I am short 5'-1 and APL is 20" for me. Plus if your bra rides up in the back (not level with the ground), you probably have a band that is a size or two too large. I am bottom heavy so have 2" between BCL and Tailbone, and then 11" to classic...

Maybe it's my band size, but it's definitely longer than armpit length. Maybe I'm measuring wrong? When I measured, I hung my head off the back of the sofa and my boyfriend measured top to bottom. Should I be measuring with my head up? My hair touches my band, and it's longer than armpit by a few inches. That I can say with certainty.

You should measure your hair by standing straight and then measuring from your forehead hair line, over the back of your head.
eta: just for comparison, I'm 176 cm, which is... 5 ft and, uh, 9.3 inches? not sure, and bsl for me is around 25 inches and waist is around 30 inches.

Oh! Thank you! That clears it up for me. So, measuring again, I am at roughly 23" (a little bit more than, but not enough that it really matters) and BSL is just below 23" (I'll round to 24). When my hair is straighter (it was humid today) I just barely reach BSL. Thank you guys so much! I was confused for a moment there

First picture post! I took this this morning, but doesn't reflect my true hair texture since I'm usually a 3a right after my hair dries from a wash (washing tonight!). This has been brushed out a few times, but I'm more wurly than curly so I don't think the length would change that much. Next month I'll share my regular texture. I tried to wear a patterned shirt but as you can see my hair just spreads out so you can't see a thing. I'm just under WL now (good news since I thought it was shorter), and am aiming for HBL by the end of the year, or longer!

I know, my hemline is so frizzy and frayed looking, but I promise it's not that bad. I'm just bad at cutting it....and my texture is merciless anyway!

So... here I am, partially nude on the internet. I looked all through my clothing for something with distinguishing marks/stripes only to realize hey, wait, I come with my own markings. ;)

Just got a fresh hair cut today. Don't really know where bra-strap length is on me because I don't typically wear one and was too lazy/cold to find one. I think I'm about an inch away. Super excited about seeing the progress. I finally felt like my hair was 'longish', then had about three inches cut off today. Sad, but worth it for the healthy ends? Whoooooo.

I'm planning to take the rest of my length shots around the 20th of each month since it's easier to keep track of my virgin regrowth from that date, so of course this picture is a few weeks late :0 I was out of town for the holidays so I couldn't get a proper photo earlier. Excited to track my growth this year, especially as I've never been this long before. I'm in the 6-month no trimming challenge, & I think I should be able to make hip this year, with a possibility I'll reach bcl. (:

Freshly washed and airdried hair. Minimal finger combing, no brushing. I trimmed in late December, so I am barely at waist stretched and something like 2-3 cm from waist unstretched.

Here we go, my first length shot of the year! I took it today on the 9th, and hopefully the 9th of every month so that my length shot will fall on my birthday, yay. It's right somewhere between waist and hip, and I'm going to be using these jeans as my measurement, because my hair is just getting long enough that it might outgrow the length of a shirt in a year. Currently it is like an inch above the waistband.

So far I'm a bit above fingertip, I love this length but I can't stand the difference in thickness between my natural hair and the dyed ends (the demacration line is almost at waist). So, the length has to go. I'm looking foward to see everyone's progress on the next months too!

Update: here's pic after the chop - back to just about tailbone and my ends feels sooooo thick! I hope I'll be back at classic at the end of this year. Fresh ends are awesome.

Of course I don't mind! I am quite flattered honestly :o I'll probably be trimming a few times this year to keep my hemline from fairytaling and to keep my split ends in check, so my growth probably won't be as much as it could be. What's your goal length? :)

The longest my hair has been in the past is about BSL and I've always chopped it because of the fairytaling...I never even knew I could maintain the length and thicken the hem. My ultimate goal is hip unstretched. Currently my hair is just past shoulder...18" stretched. I have a long way to go lol.

Hello after a break!
Last year it was going ok till August. In September I chopped mullet off and ended up with a bob. I was not too disappointed as finally my hairstyle looked decent and I could stop hiding it. Now it's a long bob with front matching back and I'm ready to gain some length. I haven't touch the front since October 2015 when it was all chopped to pixie. Good luck to everyone.

I didn't think about maintaining length either, until I joined LHC! The last time I tried to grow my hair out it was also fairytaling at around MBL and was pretty damaged, despite it being virgin hair. My hair is almost the same length it was three years ago (waist length), and I am very happy about how much better it feels and how my hemline (while still not thick) looks nicer. My original goal was also around hip length when I joined LHC, but now I think I want it to be TBL, which means I have to wait even longer now :p I try to focus on how far I've come rather than how much longer I want it to be, and that helps a bit with my impatience a bit lol

I'm going to have to revise my first length shot. I decided that January was a good time to cut off a bunch of old damage. I'm now more around hip than TB. But, things feel a lot better. I will get a new photo up soon.

I am trying to post January photos. I have never posted photos before so I don't know if they will come out right. They are not great photos anyway. Maybe over the course of the year taking photos I will get better at it. It's kind of a gray morning also, so that didn't help.

Edit - No it appears I did not post correctly :) Will have to figure this out. I did manage to get them to my photo album. Still don't know how to get them to a post.
Re-Edit - I think it worked, I had to open two windows. I'm not super tech savvy.:)

I do not know enough about hair to determine the condition of it. To me it looks damaged because of all the pieces that fly away. It is bleached and color. You can see my roots (greasy, sorry) growing in. I'm planning to not use dye anymore but it will be difficult as grays are starting to show up a lot. I am contemplating henna but undecided.

I recognize these pics aren't the best quality, I'm new and had snapped these randomly/hastily without really planning it out. I'll try to work on pic quality and wearing the same shirt or something next time.

Thank you! :o It really only looks blonde freshly washed and either in direct sunlight or in photos taken with flash. The rest of the time, it looks anywhere from light to medium brown. Looking back, I think my ends may have been curling under in the first photo, and it's perhaps been brushed into more of a V than this month. Most of it actually is pretty healthy; I use 20vol developer, bleached the length once, and only did my roots. Plus I think one bleach bath when I couldn't get my color to fade. I do have small bits of breakage though- there's a chunk at the crown that haunts me as it'll occasionally make itself known, etc. Mainly I like my natural color and prefer the feel of it, and I'd originally wanted to do an ombre so I'm just going to do it the long haul way now (:

The key is not to look at 1 month's progress. It's just that with a monthly photo you can always look back 6 months. Plus after a couple of years you amass a very interesting timeline of pictures!

Only two weeks between these two pics ??
:eye: :eye: It looks like you have grown 3/4 inch in these two weeks !! :thud: ... and it also looks like you've hit waist, by the way ! :) :)

Thank you! Though I'm pretty sure the first pic was just a fail on my part (I think the ends may have been curling under, and it was wurlier on the 6th - see the untameable former bang layer on the left) because according to my roots I'm growing right on average, or perhaps juuust above it. Though I would love if my growth rate kicked it up a notch! :whip: I do feel more solidly at waist now though! My hem is a deep u/v and the tip reached waist mid-october, and I trimmed back to just at waist Dec 18th. Stretched the tip of my hem is about a cm past waist now, I believe.

Thank you! You might have missed it anyway because I called it but didn't officially move threads until Dec. Due to layers/hem shape it doesn't really feel/look like I've hit milestone for a month or two after my V hits it, anyway. It took 2 months after I first hit it to start looking+feeling like waist length (and then I promptly trimmed it LOL), I'm happy to have grown that length back out now. Next is for it to start feeling like waist again! (:

Gosh, I love all of the hair in this thread! So diverse and beautiful!

Sooo...I decided to take my febuary pic today! Woho! (I was unsure wether or not I would forget about it if I left it longer, so I took the chance :))

http://fs5.directupload.net/images/170131/m8edh5ov.jpg (http://www.directupload.net)

My hemline is so incredible uneven...I need to buy scissors and trim a bit sometime. But its hard to determine a straight hemline with all of the textures going on. The right side looks shorter when washed because of the wurls, the left side is straight from the beginning.
Also, I don't think I can see growth? Maybe a little?

Count the stripes because you definitely can! The Feb pic has you slightly farther from the camera, so that can skew perception.

Qh my, I should really have thought about that, right?
Now I fell a) a little stupid and b) happy, because it seems like it hopped to the next white stripe..which means its grown almost 2cm!

There is definitely growth comparing where your hair is on your shirt :) do you do a parting or anything? I find the side with more hair and the side I brush my bangs off to tends to be more wavy than the other side. My layering is uneven too so the one side has a lot hair that's one shorter length that will flick off differently than my actual length, while the other side barely has layering so there's less waves. I'm not sure if you want a straight across hemline, but my hemline is also really uneven (layers were cut like a mullet basically lol) so I've just been trimming the longest layer until eventually the sides will also be the same length.

This month is rewind: I started using hair buffs to sleep in, wore my hair in a bun every day, moved to alternating weeks, one week with no oil until the night before a wash day once a week, and the next week with lots of oil and washing twice a week. I supposedly grew 1", but I can't rule out measuring anomalies, and my photos don't really show that much growth.

BTW: This is a double wash week, so my hair has a lot of oil (tomorrow is wash day) and it was just let down so excuse the bumps and weird things. I brushed it as best I could. http://imageshack.com/a/img923/4614/RTYPIO.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img923/8531/uSkzgV.png

Joining in. I took this photo a week or so ago. My hair is silver. The bathroom lighting is making it look yellow. there is still a chunk in the middle missing from the vacuum eating my hair. A disaster. Still growing out after at least two years. I just trimmed about 4 inches of almost nothing off the bottom.

The photo on my icon is before vacuum got me. I can not figure how to change it to this starting over photo.

I can not figure how to make the picture show. I can only get a link so added it to my Flicker album. Sorry. Help???

Above the dialogue box where you type you will see a series of buttons click the third from the right and a box will pop up for you to enter the URL from yout Flickr account. It is the square with a little tree. You should be able to go back and edit your post.

Thank you Pili, OK I was trying the Box with tree. Do you know which code I am supposed to use from the Photo Bucket account too. I tried all but the email one and none of them worked. There id direct HTML and IMG boxes. since it is not working with Flicker. Flicker might not allow image hosting.

Well It is still showing some code but the photo is there. Sorry for the bother. I need a better angle. Will try to do better for February. My hair grows painfully slow.

In photobucket or imgur you need to place before and after the url of the image, then it will show up as a picture on forum boards.

[img]url of image

In this case, if you go to your flickr link you see on the right bottom an arrow.

Click on it and use 'view all sizes'.

Now right click your image and choose 'copy image address'.

Now place before the link and after the link.

And it will show up:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/524/32559171565_bb60ce5f18_o.jpg

If you are on Photobucket or imgur, you can just copy the links they made for you. Use the one that mentions 'BB code' or has [img] in front of it.

Ok, this is meant to be for January. I guess I will do my pics on the last day of the month each month. This first pic it's a little hard to see the ends because my bra is dark...I though it might be the most reliable because my waistline is working on disappearing as I get more pregnant. The ends are flipping a bit from braid but it is bsl.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=26047&d=1485972209

This pic I took with a ribbon tied at waist, shows actual length of ends better but again, my actual waist might not be reliable. I think next time I will just wear a lighter colored bra.

silverbleed your hair is so pretty and soft looking! Allychan you can really see the difference! Kittengirl you have such beautiful hair! I can see a difference there too. Missmagleeliza your second pic looks really good. :)

As for me, I trimmed an inch right in the beginning of January so there is no length difference. In fact it is shorter. But the hemline looks much better. Also, I changed my locale because the light in my original photo place has too much light coming in one side or not enough light at all. I also didn't have a very good place for my camera and the angle of it wasn't really accurate for length. The new location is much more accurate and I will be using it from now on.

Both pictures are on wash day after my hair has dried.

That's really great! I remember that stage and it really REALLY helps to take pictures. Since at that length you can't feel your braid getting longer, or your bun wrapping around more, or see the length creeping down your front, pictures are essential to see all the lovely progress. :)
