In a low cinnabun secured with three spin pins. Shocked that I need three when some true longhairs seem to only use two, and the packet recommends using two...

Don't be shocked, he he! I always use 3 or even 4. Those with very long hair have completely different methods/challenges/advantages when it comes to putting your hair up than those with shorter hair. For example I have APL hair, layers, blunt hemline and poofy hair and my buns are mostly air. I need lot of securing. Those with long hair have much, much more dense, compact buns and often some natural taper which helps the ends stay in. Completely different beasts!

You just need to do what works for your hair, there is no right or wrong number of pins/sticks/clips. The most important thing is that your hair style is secure (and since this is a long hair forum, also that the securing methods are hair friendly).

I switched from a center part to a side part today. Not a big deal to anyone else, but, for me, ANY hair change is a big deal, since I'm recovering from hair loss & I'm paranoid that it's all going to abruptly fall out for no reason, at any moment. Looks nice, though; really changes my face.

Hehehe true! I still don't think I completely understand the physics of the air-bun vs hair-bun, though I know you're speaking sense! It seems like the longer people's hair is the less stuff they need to keep it up with, like just one stick for example.

In other news today I wore a new style for me - two english braids, each pinned to the back of my head with two mini clips. Engineered to fit under a sun hat.

I have a dickens of a time with the chinese bun. I need a stick and fourteen hair pins...

I was doing it fairly often, so I got it down to the point where I just needed 2 sticks and 2 big bobby pins to hold the tucked ends under the bun. How I would do it would be to stick one hairstick through the bases of the 2 braids and then wrap them both around into a bun, then add the second stick where ever the most support/hold was needed. Then the 2 pins once everything else was in place.

Oh, I think the difference is that mine is iii. And curly, which adds bulk. It just spits out pins, haha. I did the stick through both braids today. I'd rather do without the ponytailer also.

Wound up going for a left-sided side braid, and it's been so long since I braided my hair, I was actually clumsy doing it!

For reference, I'm 41 years old and have worn my hair longish for most of my life since around age twelve when my mom decided I was old enough to decide how I wanted to wear my own hair, and, as long as I took decent care of it, she threw away her Give-A-Rip on the point for the most part (except for trying to talk me out of the Disastrous Pixie Cut of Summer 1992, between my eleventh and twelfth grade years of high school--and, incidentally she was right to try to talk me out of it! It never really looked good except when professionally styled!). I learned to do a regular English braid somewhere in childhood, because I remember braiding doll hair from about age six on, and I learned to French/Dutch braid somewhere in late childhood or early adolescence. I think one of my aunts taught me because my mother to this day doesn't know how to French/Dutch braid, but one of my aunts is a long-hair and has never in my memory worn her hair shorter than waist/hip, and she used to French braid my hair for me when I had spent the night with my cousins/her daughters, who are close to me in age. Thus, it's really odd for me to be such a butterfingers at a simple three-strand English braid!

Right now it's up in a French Twist, but I haven't detangled it yet this morning, must go and do that after I help DH move some furniture.

This reminds me that in my middle-agedness I have gotten lax about grooming. I used to wash my hair every other day and style it. Now I sometimes can't remember my last wash and I can go a couple of days without detangling. I used to shave my legs every day and now I say "Ain't nobody got time for that." Or I just don't feel like it. I am fastidious about my skin care still but often a full face of makeup--which I used to do every single day--is something I don't feel like bothering with. I think this is a good thing. I needed to relax. And benign neglect fits right in.

Now that I can post more than just "ponytail with a scrunchie" LOL

I made a high-ish "bun" (I can wrap the hair cinnabun style one whole rotation around now  ), and then clipped it with a large hair clamp! All but a few baby hairs at my nape stayed up all day, and I just took it down and have not a single tangle. Amazing. Hopefully this will inspire me to stop being so lazy :P
