There is a 2013 Monthly Length Photo Project thread, and my "big chop" was in May, and I didn't decide to start growing it long until July or so, so I didn't get to fully participate in the project. So here's the 2014 thread! The goal is to take a picture each month around the same time if possible, and at the 6-month point or end-of-year point, line them all up for a nifty personal growth chart! Some tips and tricks I have seen to help keep the pictures lined up properly:

#1. Wear a shirt with some sort of design, or better yet, horizontal stripes, to compare your growth pictures to! Some people go as far as drawing lines on a white shirt and writing the inch measurement of each line! If you have any paint skills, draw lines on your back to designate milestones (SL, APL, BSL, WL, TBL, Classic, Knee, Calf, etc). If the lines are roughly in the same area of your body in each picture, it helps to visualize the growth. If you can't do anything fancy like that, simply wearing the same shirt for each picture helps for comparison.

#2. Pick a designated area of your house to take the pictures in every time, like a mirror or wall or something tall to compare your growth to over the months. Changing up the background scenery in the pictures can make the growth hard to tell sometimes.

#3. Set your camera/phone on the same surface for each picture, like a shelf or sink or table, and try to memorize the angle with a line of tape or something. Use a countdown timer setting if it has one, to get yourself in position to see your hair and your goal length.

It's pretty hard to keep track of everyone that is participating, so I won't even try. Anyone can join! I'm very excited about 2014, because it will be the year that I finally get out of the post-pixie no-mans-land and hit shoulder length! I made this thread a week early so everyone has a chance to see it and can plan to take their January 1st 2014 shot. Good luck and let the growing begin!

Excellent idea, I'll definitely be doing this! It can be hard to track your progress just by looking in the mirror. So no trims in 2014, just grow grow grow. Hopefully

Cool idea! I'm in! I even have the perfect shirt for the pictures.

Now, maybe someone will give me the camera I wanted for Christmas... However, I can always use my old one if I don't get my wish.

January 1st is not too far away!

Great initiative :) I tried to keep track of my growth this year, but after a few trims of damaged ends I lost track of the centimeters... I've gone from a chin-length bob last January to shoulder length today, but my hair is so thin that I will have to wait a while longer before I can do a proper updo.

I think this will be a great motivator through the year!

I'm in! I'll be trimming all growth for at least the first half of 2014. Since my hair will just be staying at waist and I might not really *feel* the difference as much, picture evidence of the progress I make towards thicker ends will be really good to keep me motivated.

I've done this since Fall. I strongly recommend to wear a shirt that is tight-fitting. It reveals your curvs and there's no need to draw any lines. (:

I'm in. I'm at collarbone right now if I pull the longer stuff straight, maybe just a tad past it. I am optimistically hoping for BSL at the end of the year.I had cut it al off to like two inches over a year ago and growing it out to shoulder with trims was terrible, especially with people cutting more than I asked. :/ Anyway I can make a little ponytail folded over or a gibson tuck. At BSL I can make a solid bun with U pins. These hair ties are going to eat my hair. Anyway, monthly progress. Hoping to go with no trims. Rock on, Hairy People... ;)

Oooh! I want to do this too, it will be great to (hopefully) have proof of progress each month. I'm going to try to not trim at all, but maybe a dusting of the layers for the start of each season and get rid of the last of the colour damage.

This is a fabulous idea! I am so in! I feel like my hair has stalled out lately, looking at pics from when I cut it to the chin length bob help me with perspective. 6 months worth of progress pics will really tell me a lot (about length and health of my hair) Come on 2014! Let's go! :D

Naah =p Consider it a late Christmas present to yourself lol. You could even find a shirt or dress that fades different colors if you wanted, that would show the growth pretty well too.

I got a red floral design over black dress for my pics at the thrift store, after seeing that no one thought buying something to wear would be too crazy. It's fairly form-fitting, even if the design isn't very horizontal. I just hope my hair will show up okay over the top of it. I think it will, if I can get proper lighting. That's my next obstacle. I dislike using the flash, but unfortunately my house has little natural light, so I might need to get creative. I could go outdoors for the picture, but that might present a problem if there is wind or other bad weather for a good length shot.

Last year wasnt a good hair year for me, a lot of stuff has happened and so when my good haircare rutin suddenly wasn't working anymore, I sort of gave up... Im ashamed to say.
So after cutting of some inches of damage a week ago Im ready to really focus on taking care of my hair again.
It's a good thing to take the time and really take care of yourself, you hair and all, want to be more kind and caring of myself in all parts of life, so Im in. :)

Wow, a new years birthday? Thats awesome =)

A wall calendar or a phone alarm would be a great idea for people who can't remember to take their pictures. I've been doing monthly progress pics of my pixie growing out since May, so by this point its just a habit now, I automatically know the beginning of the month means picture time. My hair hasn't even touched my shoulders yet, so I don't need to worry about a striped shirt or anything yet lol. Looks like were gonna have a flood of pictures on the 1st!

That should be fine lulana. It doesn't have to have a design on the shirt, just wearing the same shirt should make it easy enough to see growth. Try to keep to the same color backgrounds if you can, like a door or an empty wall. It might help too.

Is anyone taking a picture on any day other than the 1st? I've been doing my monthly length shots on the 5th since that was the day I got my big cut and I was thinking of continuing on the 5th at least until I got my first post-chop trim. I suppose it doesn't really matter, I'm just curious.

Ditto! I did a length shot on December 15, and I'm going to keep up that schedule. Glad I'm not the only one! Really, I'll be taking pics right around the full moon every month since I'll be trimming on a moon schedule too, and all that month's trimming will be over then. Nice pictures! I'll be taking my 1st length shot later today. I'm trying to decide if I should wash it first, so it looks more like normal or leave it (3 days after washing) when it's pretty straight and flat. If I wash it then I will need to wait for it to dry...

Or, do a wet pic and a dry pic...which seems like unnecessary work to me.

Johannah, just FYI, your drawn-on waist is about 1-2 inches below your actual waist. It's where you nip in the most on your body.

You're welcome! You need to put the link from the picture between the [IMG] thing, not the link from the website itself.
Go to the site where you uploaded your picture, right mouse click on your picture, copy picture URL. This is the one you need :o

I want to enter but I can't insert my picture for some reason!

What have you tried so far?

I never have a problem inserting a picture if I take these steps:

1. Upload picture to photobucket
2. Copy IMG link from photobucket
3. Paste IMG link into the body of my message.

Works every time.

So, after we have our year of pictures, what are we planning to do with the pics? I'm going to wait until I have the entire year of photos and then on New Year's Day 2015, I'll take my final picture and upload the entire thing to Facebook all at once. Then all my friends/family can watch my hair grow an entire year's length in just a few clicks of the mouse. I would love to know how to make a time-lapse sort of video with the pics, but I'm not that tech-savvy.

I have been doing this since May 2012 but i didnt always have the chance to take it every single month so im going to try better this time. Im going to see what stripy shirt i have around and start using that. I only used a tshirt like that about 3 times and each time i saw growth straight away which helped so much :)

I think your hair might be thicker than you think. It looks like a solid ii at least from the picture.

By the way, I love your signature. It made me smile. :)

I got myself a pixie cut in March 2012, and this is the result from just letting it grow (that's why it looks like it's in layers). I did self-trim it a wee bit, as it looked a little shaggy on some parts. x) The picture was taken the 2nd of Janary, ~00:30 AM (I was a little late there, as I wanted to take it on the 1st).
The next time I will use a striped shirt or a shirt with a clear motif, so that I (and you) will see the growth better. I wasn't at home when the pic was taken, so I didn't have lots of shirts to choose from.

Thank you. :) I actually don't know how to measure my ponytail accurately. One time is 7cm (2.76''), the other it's 8cm (3.14'').. so i never know for sure..

Stray_mind: My hair is also 8-9 cm iirc, if I put my hair tightly together. Then your hair is ii, like me. ...If I'm right in remembering that you measure your hair's thickness by the circumference around a ponytail, and that ii is 5-10 cm. %)
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, I've seen people make time-lapse videos like you've mentioned, but I guess I just got lazy and made a simple picture chart with paint. I already posted it in a few other threads, plus it's in my blog, but this is all I did:

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac299/Ashflower89/Pixie3_zpsbe01c3ca.png

I've just been taking my new picture each month and cropping it down to fit in each empty square. Of course the big difference here is that they're front shots and not back. It felt kinda pointless to take back shots while growing out a pixie considering how many mullet trims I had to do. It was just easier to see the growth from the front. I'll probably take both back and front shots for this 2014 project just in case, but the back will actually start seeing some length now that it's evened out with the sides and can't turn into a mullet again. IDK tho, if you learn how to make a video, it would definitely be more interesting to watch than just a chart made with paint lol.

I'm in! I just need to go home and find a good shirt for this....I'm always wearing black, so it's hard to tell growth in most of my length shots (I test length by feel now, lol)....I'll have to dig out a lighter colored shirt and do this tonight or tomorrow!

I'm not trimming this year either, just weekly S&D. When I feel like doing something to my hair this year, I'll do a deep conditioning or treatment instead. I was thinking of visiting the Madora Long Hair Heaven (George Michael) Salon soon for a deep treatment and their professional S&D session.

Currently "Hip, grazing BCL," hoping for Tailbone or longer by the end of 2014!! :D I'm also going to measure once a month, on the day that I take the picture for this thread. :) Look forward to seeing everyone else's progress!

Even as a newbie, you can post pictures in the body of your posts. This is how I do it:

1. upload picture onto photobucket.com
2. copy the IMG link for the picture from photobucket
3. paste the IMG link into the body of your message

Ok so here is my First shot for this year - I had to do it a day earlier because im caught up in the middle of stretching my washes - I didnt want to take a photo of a greasy hair tomorrow - but im sure that my hair wont grow all that much in one day so im keeping my date the same as always. Also, I decided to take two shots so that I can see where my waistline is (without the shirt) but also to track growth (on the stripy shirt) :)

My ends were very difficult to tame, it just always flips in different directions but ah well...

Karo, your hair looks so pretty and also love the way you did it. A long time ago when I was in college this was my go to hair style. Back then I used to wash my hair daily in the morning before going to college, never used any hair dryer, so that was the way I did my hair. Seeing your hairstyle brought back some good memories :)

Oh, yeah, I dyed it a week or so ago. Badly. There's brown chunks all over it. Now I'm debating whether to go over it with the red again to fill in the brown bits, or try a brown over the lot :/

I finally got around to uploading the picture I took on the 10th of January, so here goes, I hope they show up allright. The shorter hair was taken on the same date 2013, just after I permed it.

I also chopped a few inches off my ends that were driving me insane for a fresh start to 2014. It grows pretty fast so it should be back to where it was in no time :)

Guys, I did the most ridiculous thing! Because I forgot a stripey shirt in my length photo, I marked up an entire shirt in inch increments, put it on to redo the picture......and remembered that my hair is longer than a shirt.. omg! Such a brainfart moment that I had to post it in the "You know you're a longhair when..." thread. I think I really have hair dysmorphia! :p

So new plan! I have a pair of white leggings that got caught in a black load of laundry and turned this ugly off-grayish white color..I figure I can make markings down my butt while it's on so I can mark my progress that way.

Is anyone else getting impatient for February to get here so they can take their next length pic?

Eve 322
January 22nd, 2014, 12:54 PM
Super impatient. I promised myself I wouldn't measure or even examine my hair length in the mirror until February 13th, but it's really hard not to, lol. I've been bunning more often to keep it out of sight, out of mind. I also promised I would keep my s&d sessions to once a month (i was getting a little obsessive with it), so I'm only doing it on new moons (because why not? I'm hedging my bets :p). So now when I feel like doing something to my hair, I just do a deep conditioning or an oil treatment. That should keep me occupied. :)

Snorman

Thanks Snorman,I figured if I'm getting the urge to do something hair-related, I'd better do something constructive instead of obsessive-compulsive, lol. I really have the urge to constantly check when it's down, as if I could actually notice any growth in a day or two...smh.

PixieKitten, it's those small victories that keep you happy in between big length markers. :) I love when you realize all of a sudden that you can do something new, or you have a new "longhair problem" (i.e. hair now gets trapped when you sit down, etc), or you can do an extra half or full rotation around your buns. :p

Think I'll try this too. Just realized when I was doing my anniversary thread that I was wearing the same outfit in my first length shot as I was in my January length shot last year. I'm also wearing the same pants in the January picture I took this year. I'll have to see if I have anything with stripes on it that is long. I don't think so though. Also my hair in this pic had the waves stretched a bit because it was up in a bun all day so I imagine my length shot next month will appear a bit shorter. I also wasn't home, but all future shots will be in the same location. I'll post this months as is and try to find a better outfit for next month. This was taken on the 15th of this month so I think I'll stick to that.

Only two full days, plus a wake-up before I can take my next picture. :D I tried a bunch of stuff this month, and I don't know as it has increased my growth rate at all. I did monistat 3x a week, continued biotin (even if it isn't helping my hair, my nails have improved), started MSM, gelatin, and collagen (because I sometimes have joint issues, too, and figured it can't hurt), did castor oil once a week, and I tried the inversion method a few times, too . I don't think any of it made any difference to my rate of growth. My measurement on January first was inconsistent... one time it was 29.5" and the next it was 30" and sometimes in between. I measured yesterday (I'm impatient, and wanted a sneak peak) and it's consistently 30" so I guess if I grew at all, I only grew 1/2".

Even if my rate isn't improved by doing the biotin, MSM, gelatin and collagen, I'll continue with it, because of the health benefits. The castor oil has merit of its own, too, as a wonderful conditioner, even if it didn't do anything to increase my growth rate. I have enough Monistat for one more application, but after that, I'm done with it. It didn't seem to do anything to my shed rate, or to my growth rate, and I find it to be a hassle, plus it's a bit messy. The inversion method is just for fun, and sometimes I might flip over to massage or brush, but I don't really think it's doing anything for my hair growth.

Anyway, I'm excited to see my next picture. Maybe then I'll know if I grew at all, since my measurements seemed a little wonky on the first of January.

LauraLongLocks seems like you're trying a lot. I hope some of it pays off for you. I tend to be more lackadaisical. I always find measuring to be a bit off too. That's why I decided to join this thread. I was taking about 4 pictures a year. I always felt like my growth was pretty slow. I'm thinking, from looking at the pics, that it's really about average. I'm hoping to see proof of that here. ;)

That's why I decided to join this thread. I was taking about 4 pictures a year. I always felt like my growth was pretty slow. I'm thinking, from looking at the pics, that it's really about average. I'm hoping to see proof of that here. ;)

In growing from pixie to waist, I didn't do any of that stuff. I just wanted to see if any of it would help, and I'm too impatient to try one thing at a time. So, I did everything at once to see if my growth rate would be faster. Nope. Oh well, now at least I know not to waste my money on Monistat.

LauraLongLocks I bought my castor oil from the pharmacy in a small bottle, the thickness of it its so different than my coconut oil, its even thicker than olive oil - is that a normal castor oil? I just couldnt find it anywhere else :(

Castor oil is very thick, almost like a syrup.

I just gotta say that I love your hair and waves, t_ballet26! :'D It looks longer than mine, but you're at 22.5"... It's probably the layers that make mine look shorter (or haven't you updated your length info for a while?).

Only two days left now...! I'm looking forward to it, seeing everybody's new pictures. :hifive:

Yes, that's right. It's very thick. I mix it with jojoba oil about 1:1 before applying it to my head. Another popular oil to combine with it is olive oil.

t_ballet26 and it smells to is that also normal? Im new to this oil business and i have so many doubts that i might not be using the right oils... even coconut oil has a fatty like smell (I bought an organic one).

LauraLongLocks, I dont have many oil options around here but I also bought a sesame oil from the Asian cooking isle, it says its 100%. I was planning to do a mixture of sesame oil, almond oil and castor oil but almond oil dosnt seem to be sold around here so now that plan is out the window. What kind of oil mixture can i do with castor oil (as the main component), olive oil, coconut and sesame? or which of these oils can be mixed together, what quantity? sorry im throwing a lot of questions on you but if anybody else can help me figure this out i will be very very grateful! thank you so much!!!

Just so I'm clear, when we post our February pics, do we re-post or January pics alongside it for comparison?

And here is a comparison picture, first in October 2013, and the second today Jan 2014. This is painful people! Must be patient...

Good question. I would like to re-post, but when we get to October, we can't post more than 10 pics in a post, so maybe we can choose one per quarter.

What about combining pictures, nothing fancy, just so there's more space, in Paint? I saw a template around here somewhere, maybe near the beginning of the thread.

If you've got a picture editing program, you could paste the photos beside each other and make one picture. Or maybe use something like this: http://www.fotor.com/features/collage.html. There are different templates to choose from and I think some would be suitable!

Thank you, I was having a particularly good hair day that day. I ended up having to do a trim this month so my hair is nearly 23" now. My husband trimmed about 1/3" for me. I normally take only wet hair length pictures since I always wear it up and it doesn't matter if I let it dry looking nice but it was looking pretty good so I took some.
The first one is from December 7 2013 with a length of 22.25 and the second is January 29th after the trim with a length of 22 7/8th"

It is amazing how different the color looks in different lighting.

And this is the wet hair comparison from December 29 to January 29th after the trim

Here's my photo for January, taken 1/15. I didn't want to share it before it looks so frizzy. The line of demarcation is from henna over virgin hair (roots) vs. henna over dyed hair (ears down). I've done a whole-head henna application since then, and hopefully it isn't as noticeable. I might have to consider sun-in or lemon juice on my roots.

Oh this is so exciting! You guys are really showing growth progress! My day is the 13th, I can barely wait :) I've been taking multivitamin + biotin, wearing my hair up 95% of the time for once in my life, s&ding, and using specific oils on my scalp + massage. I'm anxious to see if any of that resulted in more growth this month, or if it just stayed the same.

I was standing a little bit straighter in today's photo than I was in my January 1st photo. The sun was behind some clouds, too, so my hair wasn't quite as brilliant. I added lines to my picture. I can really see the growth, but part of that might have been me standing up straighter.

So here's January's picture. I was measuring between 29.5" and 30" and couldn't get a consistent measurement. The blue line is waist. The black line is TBL. I thought the waves were all from a bun, but then I took today's picture and I think I have a bit of a wave pattern in my hair.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b270/Bestbirth/Hair%20Gallery/Hair%20length%20shots/046-1.jpg (http://s21.photobucket.com/user/Bestbirth/media/Hair%20Gallery/Hair%20length%20shots/046-1.jpg.html)

Here's today's picture. I am measuring 30" to 30.25" and the measurement seems more accurate this time around. The blue line is waist. The green is where I am now. The yellow is hip and the black is TBL. See the waves? I blew my hair most of the way dry and let it finish air drying before the picture. No bun waves. Those are mine! I think they are so pretty! I'm pleased as punch to see the body. I think I need to change my hair type from 1b to 1c. What do you think? And check out the growth! The tape measure was being wonky last month, but I can clearly see growth, even if part of it is posture.

Well here is my growth for the past month, Jan 1st to Feb 1st. Not a whole lot, but a single month never usually is lol. My ends love to curl out or in or any direction, so maybe I should take my pics with wet hair? IDK. I've been taking 5,000mcg Biotin all month and doing weekly leave-in conditioning treatments to keep it moisturized during the dry weather. I think I'm still on track to hit SL by my one year post-pixie date in May!
