Thread: Topical Gelatin

Interesting, I tried coconut oil on virgin hair and was unable to get it out for a week. But that was also when I didn't use shampoo either. But on my colored hair, the oil works very well and leaves my hair soft and shiny. I was hoping that there wasn't any side effects from using too much!

What do you deep condition with?

The only side effect is greasy limp hair IMO

Ah many many things... mostly things that I can find in my fridge and mix together.

My gosh you guys come up with the most creative things . I have a folder full of things I am going to try since I have started a no chemical approach hair care regimen. I have trouble with using oils too. I always seem to get too much in when my hair is wet. Thanks for this thread.

    You are welcome!

For the oil, maybe dry the hair first before oiling? I really recommend coconut oil, that's what saved my hair when I bleached it (yes I did it).

If you use shampoo of any sort, it's possible to mix melted coconut oil or olive oil into the shampoo. It actually helps the shampoo lather up more, in my experience.

I just mixed a packet of gelatin into a half cup of conditioner and threw it on my damp hair. I figure I can just wash it and do an SMT or something if it turns out freaky....

I make a protein treatment with gelatin. I leave it on for at least 10 minutes, usually longer, just because I'm easily distracted.

1 packet of Knox unflavored gelatin powder
1/4 to 1/3 cup boiling water (60 to 75 ml)
1/4 teaspoon vinegar (just over 1 ml) or a pinch of citric acid (or "Fruit Fresh")
    1-3 drops of oil

    - Dissolve the gelatin in the boiling water, stirring constantly
    - Add the vinegar or citric acid and oil as it cools and add any other add-ins, mixing thoroughly
    - Optional: Put in blender until nice and foamy. Makes it easier to distribute in hair and less drippy.

Allow to cool until comfortable. Add to clean, wet hair. Let sit for desired time and then rinse thoroughly. Best when followed with a moisture treatment.

Add-ins could be: conditioner, extra oil, 1/4 of a banana, blended (small jar of baby food works way better. No chunks!), aloe vera, 1/4 tsp. mag sulfate (adds curl).

I just bought 5 pounds of gelatin online, so I got excited when I saw this. Never thought of topical treatment!

On feelin'feminin.com on their article about growing hair long, they mentioned that a friend of theirs would take gelatin internally and her hair grew fast/healthier. I immediately got hooked.

I definitely recommend taking gelatin AT LEAST internally! Not the Knox brands, because I found out they contain MSG and are made from pig skin? I like beef gelatin more myself. LOL Topically, it may not matter much. I'm not sure. But internally I prefer a purer form.

It helps joints and overall healthiness! If anyone is interested, I can share the articles I found on it about personal testimonies taking gelatin. :]

(I'm also going to give it to my dog, who has joint and neurological issues.)

You mix it with cold or hot water, whichever mixes it best for you, then drink it. I figure you can also mix it with juices, smoothies, etc. It's supposed to be flavorless, so the possibilities are endless.

Not to mention you can make your own jell-o and marshmallows!
