I'm wondering this because altho I wash my hair so technically don't need to scratch, it feels sooooo good and I'd like to do it, but how can it not damage my hair?

Because when you scritch, you are only wiggling your comb teeth against your scalp really. You may be rubbing against an inch or two of new growth, but you aren't causing any friction to your length.

Can one scritch with their fingers? Combs hurt my scalp.

I've been scritching with my fingernails (!). I don't like the idea of using a comb either, and I can vary the pressure so much better with my own nails-fingertips dpn't seem to do it well enough for me.
