I usually use a 1:1 mixture of castor oil and olive or what have you; the castor oil is for the scalp to make it grow, the carrier oil is for the length. I oil damp hair.
When it's cold I find the castor oil "sticks" more to my hair so I either apply a little olive oil before I start or just mix in some more with my hands.

My hair LOVES oil. I oil my scalp every couple of days and my length almost every day.
I oil my scalp once a week with an ayurvedic coconut oil mix and my ends everyday. I have just started experimenting with argan oil on my ends & think I like it.
