I used Feye’s straight across method and it worked well, even on a wriggly child. She was very happy with it. It helps that she’s seen me trim my own hair so she knows it’s not a big deal.
If you want a slight layer in it (saw this on Brad Mondo's channel), take out a horse-shoe shape up top, bring it all the way up and trim the tippy tips off, that gives you a layer slightly above the hemline for the top section only, so a very faint layer!

Thank you! I might try that in the future

I am gonna link that video, for reference sake! Let me go look for it...
Here it is; the "thing" with the layer is as of this time: 14.15 when he starts the division, it is a "rough" and quite low horseshoe.

Hugely helpful to make a blunt cut "softer", though! My mom now uses it too.

My ends are really damaged lately, if I don't brush them daily I end up with dreads. Still, I'm afraid to get a trim.. I will go to a hairdresser next week. I'm wondering if she can do microtrimming/dusting. I'm at bsl when my hair is straight.

I microtrimmed about half an inch off my ends, bringing my hair from 31.5 to 31 inches, plus did a major s&d session of split ends. I have hair thickness down to around BSL, then it is thinner down to my waist, I hope to thicken that up over time. I'll check for growth in about 3 months and possibly do another microtrim then and another s&d session. Since I had always only had hair to about BSL in the past, it was always very thick, but once I started growing it past that to waist is when I noticed it seeming thinner toward the ends. Can it thicken up? Maybe, we'll see, I think part of the problem may be either old layers from 1.5-2 years ago, or hairs that just never grow very long on the top layer.

This sounds good but I think I would be nervous to try it myself. I have still never trimmed this year, I just keep saying I will....

Well, I meant to add that I enjoyed the video, thank you, Lapushka!

How long does does it take to thicken your ends? I've got someq pretty good fairytale ends going on right now. And I'm wanting to get down to knee. Is it better just to trim once a year like I've been to retain length or is it been to maybe go 6 months between to help thicken and still grow? The goal is to get to knee and donate and come back up to the most comfortable length or length I liked best. I do oil my ends to try and help. Would love your thoughts. TYIA!!
