I always put them in zig zag out.Tthe flat side is a bit longer so I just figured it made sense to have that longer end hidden deep in my hair.

I always have them zig zag in. Having them out just looks weird to me.

I usually use hairpins that are U shaped, and very rarely use bobby pins. When I do use bobby pins I put the flat side toward my scalp because its more comfortable to wear them that way.

I own one bobby pin and I do not know where I got it. I think it held some papers together at some point as the one who sent them to me could not find any paper clips. I do have a few bows on bobby pins however, but generally I do not use them much, but I guess I will need to get some if I am going to try out some more advanced buns.

I think I may have to see which way hopes my hair better and does not slip.... You all got me curious. But with thick hair? Will it even hold? I guess I can find out since they are so cheap.

Zig-zag out, of course, because the zig-zag side of the stands up a bit and it would pinch my scalp if I put them in any other way.

Zig zag out to add texture to the hair pinned rather than flattening out, I always thought.

Mine has a shorter length on the zig zag side so wearing it zig zag out makes removing the bobby pins easier

Bobby pins are packaged/displayed with the zig zag out, so I assumed that's the part that is meant to be seen (if you're not tucking them fully in your hair).
