Over the cheese!
Oh, thank you! I didn't know the right words…I can’t do either neatly from the scalp (I thought that is what the French braid was)…I just do it from the base of the neck and they look the same except for the first couple parts/braids.
I’m right handed and the French way is easier, but my hair is to the point I have to “loop” my braid on something (toe, arm, table leg) to maintain tautness and then it “flips” so I have to do a Dutch braid. It’s not in muscle memory but now I don’t get so mixed up (I used to try to do the Dutch braid but my fingers would keep going back to French) with it
Yes, that is what I meant, thank you. I need to build my “hair” vocabulary…so it’s not French or Dutch at the nape? It depends on where you start? So I was talking about an English braid since I meant starting at the nape…I’ve never really talked about hairstyling before…and I watch hairstyling videos without sound…I have a lot to learn! Thanks for helping me learn
Over my left side.
I personally call them both English at the nape and specify over/under, but I've seen others call only the over way English and the under way Dutch. It could be regional or just down to personal preference! In the end it doesn't hurt to be as descriptive as possible so we're all on the same page
Regarding braiding past your fingertips, I first try to prop the braid on my shoulder so that enough of its weight is hanging over the back to create tension in the length. If that doesn't work, I sometimes wrap the braid around my neck to reach the ends. It is awkward because the braid ends up flipping like you said, but I can generally reposition my hands with the help of a mirror. If all else fails, you could always hold the braid with your mouth (gently biting on it with lips over teeth)...umm...I can confirm that works too
.
I am ambidextrous and I braid over my left shoulder if it is a single plait.
Left shoulder, right handed.
