Baby shampoo cannot handle product build-up the way some adult shampoos can and even those can be limited when it comes to that.

If this works well for you (and I can see no reason why not), you may need to redefine your hair with regard to tangling, lol. The only thing in your routine to watch out for is henna resin, if no other products are used.

Yeah, I use Suave clarifying shampoo when I clarify, and lather twice.....that stuff is like paint stripper LOL.

I don't really have a problem with the tangling issue, because a coney conditioner clears it right up! So, if it works, I will go for it! Liking the oil/shampoo blend though.....

Suave is the one that has been reported to take its time. It has a coating or 2 of its own in there. Not my first clarifying choice.

You need to be comfortable with this. Take your time. Just remember optimal results are possible.

I did do a shampoos reported to be successful consistently post.

The Optimal Results post, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...&postcount=736, just gives report #'s and the link to the first post. All Successful results posts list the numbers contained in them. By reading the quoted text and updates, one gets more information on the results. I designed it that way. There are excellent, informative reports that help others, and should in my opinion, be read.

I read most of your blog and posts on this before I tried it....THANKS SO MUCH for putting all this together for us!! Your successful shampoo list is what I read that made me decide to try the Johnson's.....I was going to get their all-in-one "baby wash", but all they had was the shampoo. The shampoo smells great with the coconut oil BTW.....they make a nice combo!

I will note that my fiancee got a little nervous when he saw the bottle of Johnson's baby shampoo in the bathroom......he said...."Uh, is there something you're not telling me?" I told him that seeing as how both of us have "been fixed", I don't think either of us has anything to worry about on that front! LOL

I am VERY PLEASED with the results.....I don't think it could get much better than this.....I consider soft, silky hair with body but less fly-aways to be pretty optimal. The tangling (when wet) issue is completely, 100% normal for me....always has been, so I am not even slightly concerned about that......

That is hilarious about your fiancee. I wonder if this thread is going to give certain partners heart palpitations, with baby shampoo choices suddenly appearing in bathrooms, lol.

I am not trying to convince you that your results are not great, just that optimal results are a higher bar that you may be able to reach.

I am thrilled that this is working so well for you now!

ETA: And you are most welcome!

I really wanted to try this method, so I mixed my normal shampoo (Sunsilk Straight Perfection) with coconut oil at about a 1:2 oil:shampoo ratio. Washed my hair as normal (in shower) and dried it as normal (hair dryer on cool setting). It wasn't any more or less tangly than usual. It was, however, noticeably softer than usual, with the flyaways vastly reduced. Possibly shinier than usual, too. I would definately count this a success.

I will get a different shampoo, probably the Neutrogena Anti-Residue recommended by Ktani, but I really wanted to try this now, and I haven't been able to go shopping yet. Hopefully my small town will have one or some of the shampoos that work well.

This post is meant as a Guide in helping one choose a shampoo to create a coconut oil shampoo.

    Optimal Results Shampoos

Saturation or Final Optimal Results, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...postcount=1065

    What Optimal Results Means, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...postcount=1603

    Optimal Results Checklist, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...&postcount=736

    1. White Rain Shampoo, old formula only - Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...&postcount=562

    2. Aussie Aussome Volume Shampoo - This shampoo is fine for this although the coatings in it, while they do not prevent the lauric acid from penetrating the hair, may be too much for some hair types, making it not the best choice. Clarifying should not be needed when simply switching from this shampoo to another.

    3. Nivea Baby Mild Shampoo

    4. Margo Original Neem Liquid Hand Wash (Henkel)

    5. Redken Clear Moisture Shampoo - contains silicone -Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo

    6. Garnier Daily Care Fortifying Shampoo - contains silicone - Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo

    7. Down Under Naturals Fruitkicks Shampoo

    8. Sunsilk Straight to Perfection Shampoo - contains silicone

    9. Garnier Ultra Doux Gentle Shampoo Lime Blossom for Normal Hair - can contain silicone

    10. Family Dollar Fortifying Shampoo - contains silicone, Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo

    11. Boots Essentials Shampoo daily care for normal hair (the blue one Pepperminttea), cost 59p

    12. Prell Classic Shampoo (the one in the bottle), Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo, pH 6.3 - 6.8 acidic. The tube concentrate version contains problematic coatings for this and alcohol. The bottle version contains neither, has superlative reports here, and can be used as a clarifyer on its own. http://www.drugstore.com/qxp218551/p...hair_types.htm), See also, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...postcount=2496, Buying Prell Classic Shampoo in the bottle internationally, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...postcount=3293

    13. Europrofit essential HAIR shampoo every day, Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo, 38 cents at Kruidvat, Netherlands, and Belgium at Kruidvat-stores

    14. Delon Fabulous Fruit for dry and damaged hair, Netherlands

    15. Neutral Shampoo for normal hair, Saturation or Final Optimal Results shampoo, Netherlands, and Belgium at Kruidvat-stores

Note: Silicones are not necessarily a problem with this and there are 5 optimal results shampoos that show that. It is about product formulation and the weight and kind of silicone used (one cannot go by just the name, e.g. dimethicone because there are different dimethicones).

    http://www.faceatelier.com/face/us/w...c=tradesecrets
"products with silicone really are non-comedogenic. Dermatologist Dr. Zoe Diana Draelos, Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, highlights an additional benefit of silicones. She recommends that women, and particularly those with sensitive skins, choose a liquid foundation with a silicone base because silicones have a very low incidence of skin irritation, and are proven to not cause acne."

Ok, Ktani, more info thank you to my mom who got me the info

Clarified with Neutrogena. We do have water filters going, so pretty neutral water overall. Had been using Paul Mitchell Color stuff, why do I insist on trying that when I know it will just make my hair hate me, I do not know.

Used a dime+ sized amount of Johnson's Baby Wash with a scraping of coconut oil (it's the bulk supply from our co-op) mixed in, washed and rinsed as normal. Applied Aussie 3 minute miracle to the ends.

So now, still drying. Applied some argan oil to the ends, and worked some Tresemme lotion creme leave in about an hour ago, and that's helped dry it a LOT.

Overall, my hair isn't as pissy as it tends to be post clarifing. A lot of fluff, but not sure if that's the volume described by the oil shampoo, or it's the pissy response from the clarifing. Color looks fine, didn't do anything damaging that the clarifing didn't do.

But this drying thing has me baffled.

    Thank you for your report!

    This Paul Mitchell shampoo?
Paul Mitchell Color Protect Daily Shampoo, http://www.folica.com/hair-care/sham...specifications
"Water - Aqua , Sodium Myreth Sulfate , Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Cocamidopropyl Betaine , Cocamide MEA , Polyquaternium-44 , Panthenol , Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein , Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch , Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride , Glycol Stearate , Sunflower Extract - Helianthus Annuus , Bisamino PEG/PPG-41/3 Aminoethyl PG-Propyl Dimethi , White Ginger Extract - Hedychium Coronarium , PEG-12 Dimethicone , Bisamino PEG/PPG-41/3 Aminoethyl PG-Propyl Dimethi , Algae Extract , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract , Anthemis Nobilis Extract , Henna Extract - Lawsonia Inermis , Jojoba Extract - Simmondsia Chinensis , Rosemary Extract - Rosmarinus Officinalis , PEG-12 Dimethicone , Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride , Glycol Distearate , Steareth-4 , Citric Acid , Tetrasodium EDTA , Sodium Chloride , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Magnesium Chloride , Magnesium Nitrate , Fragrance - Parfum , Benzyl Salicylate , Geraniol , Hexyl Cinnamal , Linalool , Butylphenyl Methylpropional"

A good amount of coatings without all of the herbal extracts or looking at the conditioner. I doubt Neutragena got them all off your hair in one go. Johnson's Baby Wash could not handle any leftover coatings. I did not even count the silicones.

How does your hair feel now?

Thank you for your report! I will add it to successes.

Ktani, that'd be it. Given as my hair doesn't much like protein (it's ok with some, but way too easy to go over board), and henna and my hair are arch rivals - why did I consider this a good idea. I do not know.

I'll be using Giovanni Tea Tree for a while since that's pretty much a guaranteed no-freak-out for me, and if it strips color, it strips color and I'll re do it. Go back to trying coconut oil at home.

Hair now, it's all the way dry. Doesn't seem to be the fluffy of "I hate you for clarifing" routine, so not sure what's going on. It's nice and soft, so I like that.
