    Default Oiling before Bleaching-Tip

So I realize that many here don't bleach, but for those who do...try coconut oil beforehand.

I remember reading something about using olive oil before bleaching, so I gave this a try to minimize damage.

I saturated my hair with the coconut oil. SATURATED.

And then I applied the bleach as per usual. And not only did the bleach seem to work faster, but in the end, it was far gentler on my hair.

Wonderful news! Was there any damage that you are aware of?

There are reports here on pre-treating with coconut and argan oils before using conventional peroxide and bleach.

Coconut oil has been reported to increase both conventional dye uptake and lightening. Olive oil does not have the same chelating capabilites to help prevent hair damage as either coconut oil or argan oil, based on the research I have read.

There was some damage, as to be expected, but far less than the last time I bleached sans oil.

I think I will stick with the coconut oil. I just wish more people knew about this, it's pretty amazing.

Damage depends on a number of variables including the condition of the hair at the time of bleaching, as well as timing and the strength of the product used. I am glad to hear that you are pleased with the results.

What is the "bleach" that you use?

Garnier Nutrisse Extra Strength bleach, used with and without coconut oil.

Hey, you're in BC. (I'm in Vancouver.) If you're interested, it's on sale at London Drugs right now.
