A little late for this update, but on the 9th I made a bet with my DBF that my hair will hit waist length in three months. This is because the last time I measured I seemed to be solidly 3 inches from waist; I essentially was insisting that it is possible to grow that in three months. He didn't think it was likely. So I said "wanna bet? Loser buys dinner.".
I don't usually measure much so I thought it'd be a fun way to pass the time, since mbl to waist is such a difficult stretch to see progress with for so many people. I've never felt so lucky to be short with a short torso, I think it gives me a fighting chance of winning, as long as I avoid anything damaging. </3
I think my hair seems to be back to the length it was before my trim at the start of the month (it's growing faster than I realised???), which makes it unambiguously waist length. The thing is, since I have a high natural waist, it doesn't... feel like waist length? It feels like it's still midback and that I'm cheating based on technicalitiesSo I'm tempted to wait another few weeks or a month before properly calling it. After all, it's going to be a while before I can get to hip anyway (high waisted, low hips, sigh) so there's no rush.
On the bright side, I'm really enjoying my hair at this length! I didn't like the midback abyss but it's finally starting to feel kinda "long" to me, and the longer it gets the more I'm enjoying it![]()
Checking into to say that I will probably pause my actively growing to waist for some time.
I'm decided to grow silver now and even though I'm really not considering any big chop , I still feel like maintaining a bit shorter length for the transition is a reasonable choice.
I plan to soon trim and even out my hemline into sort of very long bob and then I'll see. I will most likely hover in between mid-back and waist during my journey to silver![]()

I've misplaced my measuring tape and ruler after reorganizing my craft supplies but my hair sure FEELS longer. When it's wet it really feels closer to an inch from waist...but it's harder to tell as it's drying, because my ends have been flipping up a bit lately, and bunning has been giving me gorgeous loose waves. Once upon a time I would have been thrilled, but I just accepted my straight hair, now it's changed on me! And it's so much harder to measure now that it won't fall straight 😭 I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side.
Hi fellow midback-waist'ies, i am glad to announce i have graduated to this thread! I've never made it to waist length and i really struggle and dislike the midback length on me. My hemline isnt great and i am often tempted to chop it off. But i won't. I will go for a micro trim in April to even out the hemline a bit and then i will let it grow to end of December. Happy growing!
Thats a brave step to take, the chop! And understandable in your silver transition. Wishing you a speedy road to all-silver!
I am not chopping mine, and I'll never go gray/white (since it would totally wash me out and I don't need to look like I'm sick again) but you do you. Every time I chop mine to shoulder length, I always end up hating it, so nope, it stays long no matter how old I get. Mine's just a few inches from waist length, so hopefully, I can hold out until July to get a trim (probably just back to mid back range or somewhere in between APL and MBL like I did last time I got a trim, which was last June). The minute those gray/white hairs show their ugly faces, I'm covering it up with Natural Instincts in Medium Golden Brown (which is the closest to the color I have now, since going back to my old color would be too much work).
