The evenness is usually hit or miss, because my tactile sensations are often wrong lol but this time the result made me take a photo

Yes, you are right about the first loop. I ususally braid without a mirror and it felt like I was going more horizontal than I actually did. Also, I tried to get to hold it with a stick, but I think a fork does a better job securing everything.
scalp > SL > MBL > TBL > FTL > KNEE > KNEE+
I have that problem too, but it was actually quite simple here. By the time I reached the nape, I had braided in 3/4 of my hair, and instead of joining the final 1/4 into the existing 3 strands, I added it in separately as its own strand. This made the transition look really seamless. I'll try and get a pic from the back or side next time to show you what I mean!
