I'm in no way an expert on this, but are you stressed? How's your diet? I've heard that both stress and an unbalanced diet can cause hair loss.
Hello everyone, I have been a lurker here on the LHC for a few months, but only now do I have the courage to post. As the title says, I'm having great troubles with my hair falling out, and I simply do not know what to do. I am hoping that if I start from the beginning and explain my situation, some kind soul here may be able to offer me a solution.
For the past few months, I have noticed that the hair around my temples has been thinning away. It is not too noticeable, but because it's my own scalp, it stands out very greatly to me. I tried googling some solutions today, and came to the conclusion that I do not have enough blood circulation within my scalp, so I must start doing daily massages to try and get that hair to grow back. Of course, next, I laid down and tried massaging my scalp for 5-10 minutes, then came back to the computer and tried to google any other possible solutions.
I then found a link here on LHC from google about something called a "brown sugar scrub" for the scalp. I was intrigued, and prepared some conditioner and brown sugar to try right away. I hopped into the shower, wet my hair, then flipped it over so i could more easily get to the scalp, and began rubbing the mixture in. It felt fine, my scalp began to feel cleaner, and all was going well until I rinsed it out then applied my usual conditioner. As I gently pulled my comb through my hair, a large amount of hair soon started pulling out of the rest of my hair along with the comb. I finished combing, and by the time I was done, I had roughly five times the normal amount of hair that I usually shed within the shower. I was completely freaked out, and couldn't stop swearing under my breath and just wishing that I was only imagining things.
But it's not my imagination, and right now I'm sitting with my hair plopped up in a towel (I'm a curly), and waiting for my hair to dry before I get to see the total damage done to my hair.
I'm not really sure what I'm asking for, perhaps just some comfort and maybe an explanation for what has happened to my hair from anyone. If you read through this whole thing, I thank you so so much, even if you don't have anything to offer. I appreciate any replies to this issue of mine, and will answer any questions that require me to offer any more information that I have forgotten to supply.
I'm in no way an expert on this, but are you stressed? How's your diet? I've heard that both stress and an unbalanced diet can cause hair loss.
There are a few possibilities. First, it could be genetics. Sometimes women at whatever age it may be for them will have hair thinning. But, it won't usually just suddenly happen out of nowhere.
It could also be a result of your diet. If you aren't getting enough protein or enough calories in general it will cause hair loss, stress can as well.
Then, there are medical reasons. For example, hypothyroidism can cause hair loss.
Lastly, sometimes we just have periods where we shed more hair. This can be naturally or from slightly worse health. When I had mono for an extended time, my hair became on the thin side, and it is naturally thick and still recovering.
It would be a good idea I think to examine what you are eating and maybe up your calorie intake. If it is significant, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go and get looked at by your doctor.
Oh and btw, my hair is getting thicker again So it is a problem that can often be fixed with time.

Thank you both for such fast responses! I knew this would be the right place to ask.
I have had a moderate amount of stress lately, mostly from school and friends. I will try to work on this, in case it is the main problem here.
It could be my diet after all, I am on the "smaller" side and could use a few more extra pounds. Perhaps the stress I've been feeling lately has affected my weight, and is also affecting my hair growth? Either way, I will look into fixing my diet.
Thanks again for the responses so far! I guess I was initially freaked out that the sudden large amount of hair shedding was from the brown sugar scrub, but now realize that there are other factors that could be adding to it.
Awww, so sorry to hear!
How hard did you rub the sugar scrub on your scalp?
So there could be plenty of factors that make you shed. Stress is definately a big one as it effects your health in general. Healthy people grow healthy hair better than unhealthy people. Part of growing out your hair is optimizing your personal, general health. Anyway, let's hear a little about your hair care routine. Personally, I found that certain things make me shed a lot more. 1. Sulphates in the shampoo 2. Silicones in the conditioner/shampoo 3. Hot water in the shower 4. Brushing/handling too much. These are the main things for me. You could cut back on shedding by finding out what your scalp doesn't like. I've brought my shedding down to a fraction of what it used to be (I'm talking handfuls of hair). I brought by ponytail circumference up by half an inch in the last few months or so. After you cut back on shedding, it takes a few months to really see the result because the new hair has to grow out to a noticeable length.

I suggest checking in with a doctor. Rule out anything medical. It could be something simple. I hope you find a solution.
Change is the only constant.
I wet my hair every day in the shower, since I find that I simply can't get second day hair with my curls. I don't use silicones or sulfates on my hair. The brand of shampoo I use is Live Clean which I only use as needed, typically once or twice a week. I CO-wash most days and condition with Suave Naturals tangerine conditioner every day. My hair has very low porosity, so I don't use any leave-in because it just sits on top and creates a layer of buildup. Otherwise, I just use aloe vera gel on my hair and wrap it in a microfiber towel for about ten minutes, then I let it air-dry. I comb my hair only when it is wet and has conditioner in it to gently get out any tangles. Oh, and my hair is sensitive to protein as well, so I avoid using that. I cannot think of much else that I do for my hair, if anyone sees problems with my routine, please point it out.
And I will definitely speak with a doctor as soon as possible, it would sure be silly if I'm worrying this much about my hair, and it's only a small fixable problem all along.
Thanks again to everyone for taking time to help me out with this, I really really appreciate it!
all I can offer are hugs .
whatever it is , all you can do is go forward and take care of your whole body..and there is lots of good advice here too...try not to "do" too many things trying to fix it!
