How I normally make my buns. This is a little ridiculous height wise. How do I make a bun like this without getting all of that height?

Wrap each coil around the next, not right on top of it. When you get near the ends, tuck only the ends underneath.

Try twisting the hair a smidge tighter and wrapping the coils a little bit looser. If I wrap the coils of my bun too tightly, that's exactly what it looks like, with each successive coil winding up directly under the one before it. It also might help to stick a pin or two into the very first coil and then continue wrapping as usual. That seems to help stop the "pop up" and I don't usually have trouble with the rest of the coils as long as I can get that first one to lie flat.

Yes, just wrap the coils more loosely. After you do the first wrap of the base, place your hand on the baby bun and press it to your head. Then wrap the rest of the coils around it, not pulling too tight, just laying them down against it. Tuck the very ends under the coil and secure with pins or a ficcare.
