I voted yes. A Pinless Nautilus was the first bun I ever did and it stayed. That was before I joined here and my hair was somewhere around tailbone or a bit longer then.

Of course I can put my hair up without any props, but it will fall down the second I take my hands off... On top of that, my hair will keep spitting sticks and pins out just for fun... Today it spat out a plastic fork out of a center held braided bun, what can I say...

Absolutely, I have the skill to accomplish that. I used to be able to do it effortlessly on a regular basis, but every now and then, my silky hair becomes too slippery and makes it difficult.

Option isn't there, my hair is definitely long enough but it's so slippy it won't stay. I can do all the loops and stuff but it just slips undone, or the "knot" drops and turns into a huge tangle.

If you can loop your hair around your hand twice before you 'tie' the knot, it seems to stay better. I'm not sure why, though.
You can only do such with either very long hair or/and with very curly hair. Straight hair without any waves won't hold like this. That's why Afro people can do their hair in twist ropes without any hair ties in the ends, even when the hair is rather short. Or Russian women often wear long braids with open ends in wavy hair, but then the hair is so long (thigh or knee) that the shere length will hold everything and the last coils are just a bit loose. But with straight 1a hair it won't hold like this even in knee length.

I like to do the Niente bun, a half up self knot, then the bottom half is wrapped around that first knot. This, for me, will keep all night, and am finding to be my favorite sleep 'do.

Here's a youtube link explaining how to make this knot. If anyone knows of other similar (or different types of self knots) let me know. I will say that this is very comfortable! No pins at night make it easy on my tender scalp.

I'll post my own pics after this next wash.
Actually Niente nails it, because the link doesn't work anymore, which I find very sad . But from what you explain, I can tell, that I had made the Nautilus Bun also with two strands one time. One strand for the loop, and the rest of the strand together with the other strand is the base wrapping. This method you may also use like: Two thirds of your hair for the loop, and the rest of that strand with the last third for the base wrapping. The advantage of this method is, that for shorter hair, the loop won't become that thick in relation to the final base wrapping.

At the beginning of being long haired online, I didn't ever know, that you can put up your hair without any sticks or hair ties, now I know several kinds of a self-holding pinless updo, most I did invent myself.

Here the Nautilus Bun with two hair strands.

So from now on there isn't such an excuse like "my hair is too short for that" anymore.

Yes, I can. Works best when my hair is barely damp or fully dry. I don't trust it for exercising or being out and about though, so outside of the house I always secure my buns with elastics or bobby pins.

I can barely do a bun with pins. My hair is long enough to tie in a knot, but I'm knot(excuse the pun) very good at it right now since I just tried it for the first time pretty recently.

    Hi Pearl Raynefel,

does your hair style have a name already or is it just a knot and then you wrap the rest of your hair around? That would be the Walkyrie Knot then, if it is called here like this too. I'm so glad that I found out about all those self-holding hairstyles, when my hair was already long enough to do them.
