I normally get the "is that your natural color" question. I get it a lot since I started using henna, because the color does look subtle enough to be real and it mostly blends with my roots. But I also got the same question when my hair was bleached white/blue-black/purple-red, or highlighted. "Uhhh. No."

I also got a lot of really rude questions when I had my head shaved.

    "Are you a neo-Nazi?"
    "Isn't that cold?"
    "You look like a boy."
    "That looks weird."

I always got that kind of comment from young children. Older people, on the other hand, would always well up with tears and thank me for donating to cancer. It was always really cute.

But whenever the drill sergeants would see one of us touch our hair, or when we were in the PX getting hygiene and hair items, they would always say something about "horse hair"- referring to hair extensions.
"Don't you go trying to sneak some of that horse hair into your head"
"Oh, are you fixing your weave? Your horse hair about to fall out? I don't know who you're trying to look pretty for."
    The thing is
    1. NONE of us had hair extensions.
    2. NONE of us even had long hair - like I said, the longest hair was shoulder length.
    3. My hair was in AFRO form. I wore cornrows and twists because it wasn't long enough to make a neat afro puff in the back of my head. So, seriously, if I'm going to wear hair extensions in basic training, where the most convenient style that conforms to Army regulations would be a bun...don't you think I'd get longer extensions so I wouldn't have to braid and twist for hours? We barely had time to sleep!
    4. But finally -

PLEASE find me a horse with an afro on his butt, so I can understand why these ignorant, racist drill sergeants thought I was wearing horse hair!
Hillarious! I have horses here on the farm and if I had a horse with an Afro on it's butt I would surely post it! But, alas, I have no afro-butted-equines

    "What color do you use?"

From my aunt who I love dearly.

"You can't buy this in a box!"
I said with a smile... but I can't blame her, this is the first time since I was 14 that my entire head/whole length is untouched with color.
These pics were about 10 years ago... Trying again from similar to that short pic.

Let's see...one of the "dumb" comments that comes to mind:

"Why bother growing your hair long? Don't you get split ends when it rubs against your butt?"

I'm sorry, but I didn't think split ends were a curse upon people with long hair, or more specifically those who have reached that particular length.

I'm gonna admit, I can imagine myself saying something goofy like "Your hair is really long!" What I would really mean is "I love your long hair! It is gorgeous!" but my awe and admiration would turn me into Captain Obvious.

Thank you for clarifying this obvious response. I never know if it is a compliment when it is an obvious statement. I hear, "you're so tall" all the time but never know if it was meant to be snide or complimentary. I still just answer with a thank you but I wonder from time to time.
