I definitely get angry when mediocrities who follow the training routines of sociopaths try to gaslight customers into ruining months and even years of their patient hair growth - just so the salons can make more money.

Maybe it's possible to start an actual backlash against the average stylist. Drive them and especially their trainers and bosses to either do honest work or go out of business.

I'm sorry that you had to even meet such cringe-inducers. They're literally worse than used car salesmen - I personally have had _better_ experiences with used car salesmen.

Trying to cajole a longhair into paying for not only a pixie but also its constant maintenance.... Yeeesh!! That is a slimy upsell if ever there was such a thing. Totally sociopathic.

And to think they have a shill on this LHC board where the rest of us happily support each other's hair growth for free.

Sorry for dupe. The system gave me a weird "wait for 30 seconds" error.

    KNIT reminder!

"I came for the hair care advice, but I stayed for the friends."

It has been said more than once that TLHC is one of the nicest sites on the 'net. That's because we have exceptional members who genuinely care about each other and terrific moderators who strive to make sure everyone has the best experience possible. The feeling created is very much like an extended family.

On occasion, however, a quarrel will occur, or a bit of snark will creep into people's messages, and this note is a gentle reminder that the best antidote for that is for everyone to monitor their own posts. Using the Report Button is a great help to the moderators by alerting us to problems, but prevention is a way that everyone can help maintain that warm community spirit. So, as we like to say, KNIT before you post.

Before you hit the "Submit" button, review what you're about to say.
    Is it Kind?
    Is it Necessary?
    Is it Informative?
    Is it True?
Read your words as if someone else were saying them to you. How would you receive them? Would you be offended, hurt or angry? If your post doesn't pass those tests, try again. If you simply can't compose something, let the thread go, and maybe try again later.

Every once in a while, there will be something that you cannot agree with. No one expects there to be a complete meeting of minds on every single topic discussed here. In those cases, we ask for tolerance - not acceptance, but tolerance. The other person is always worthy of respect. If you post, do not attack. Agree to disagree, and let your words be civil and even as kind as possible.

Thank you, everyone, for making this such a wonderful community.

I haven't cut, or trimmed, my hair in over two years. I don't remember exactly when was the last time since I wasn't paying attention. My hair grew from collarbone - above shoulders to waist in a couple of years. Average growth rate, I think. I just recently did a couple of S&D's. I literally left it alone for two years except for a simple wash and condition.

I plan to trim it at some point, after it is long enough to still feel long after the trim. I'd like it to be at hip after a trim, I think. The last 3-4 inches are a little thinner due to a big shed after and illness and huge stress 3 years ago. Those ends actually have a looser wave pattern too, so I eventually want to trim them off, but not yet as it would set me back tooo much. I have just started to feel like my hair is actually long.

What comes to stylists always cutting off more than you want or giving you a cut you didn't even ask, it has happened to me and close people so many times. My first encounter with a stylist was when as a child I wanted a bob and she gave me a short bowl cut. The same woman gave my mom a boy cut which she hated. The stylist replied "one person's inch is different than other person's inch" when my mom complained.

I had a friend who was a stylist and she out right said she hates long hair and thinks it's gross. She once cut my hair that I was trying to grow out, way too short, I was upset and she could tell and the next time she didn't take off too much. Yeah I still let her cut my hair. But she did love to practice braiding my long hair

My long haired nieces have trusted me to trim their hair all their lives, I never took off more than they asked.

I think most stylists just don't get long hair, and don't realize how important it is to long hairs, and how long they spent growing it out.. They should honor the clients wishes regardless.

Sometimes I think I should offer a service of trimming long hair, and that would be the only thing I would do. Oh, except talk about long hair and offer advice I have learned from fellow longhairs!

Yep. If you want to grow your hair, stop cutting it.

Well, a ruler is a ruler. These days they make combs with rulers on them. I saw one years ago - at a salon, no less! But like I've said: what other business could behave like that and get away with it?

Yes they should! If not that, then they should at least admit their bias upfront and send you away without taking your money.

Someone else on here has said this too.... well, maybe you were the one. I'd go to an LHCer, no problem, but I live in Sin City USA.

Anyway, you'd think there's a market for "Long-hair Friendly" salons. They could still do their soccer mom cuts for all the soccer moms, but also be trained on longhair priorities and care. Any town of 2000+ should have a good enough customer base to make this inclusivity worthwhile, once word gets out. Longhairs do scraggle-trims, shaping trims, S&D, care routines and coloring.... And I'd swear long hair is back in vogue, judging from the Insta-type influencers.

Might be a biz opportunity for somebody here.

My friend feels the same too. I was talking earlier in this thread and she calls it a cult. She also says her salon refuses long hair unless they've been approved. Sometimes it is frustrating talking to her about hair. We have different view points of it.
