Thin/Fine Hair Thread

My hair that you see in the signature below is no longer that. For front facing pics (it's that thin) you can always find the pictures in my private album (just friend me if you're settled here). It is much thinner; somehow my mid lengths to ends have thinned out. I used to bun 24/7 except on wash day. And except at night. And thank God I didn't also do that to it. My bunning method is wrong, and I need at least knee length to comfortably bun. Since that is not going to happen soon (I can't grow beyond classic for comfort reasons), I just cut back to BSL.

With thin ends now. I had to borrow claw clips from my mom. That thin!

My base is still 4 inches, odd but true, but the ends are... pitiful (to me (my personal feeling) considering where my hair should be).

When I cut my hair I cut it in 2 ponytails to the side of my head (compact cut) and those ponies were as thick as a sharpie. I used to have ponytails that each were thicker than one regular size pony. Yeah. It's thinned out that much.

But then I bunned like this for 5+ years. So...

I urge you guys to please look at how you are styling. Don't let things like this surprise you. My ends felt fluffed up due to the waves after washing and so I never questioned it, and it was a gradual change so it snuck past me. Darn it.

I guess, at least for the time being, or maybe longer, I belong in this thread. I have fine hair. I have thin hair. Something made my mid lengths break off and I do blame the bun that *I* did. I used to be glad I "suddenly" could do that Nautilus bun and I fear it might have not been that great a choice for my length and I should have stuck with my lazy wrap bun.

Hello everyone I'm joining this thread as I have fine delicate hair. After years of doing highlights I embraced my real color (an a few years ago and I wonder how I could hide such a nice color for so long....unfortunately now it is mixed with white/gray which I decided to keep for the moment. In septembre I did my 3d and last aphogee treatment and throw the rest into garbage since it made my hair break badly. This time for sure (last two times I wasn't sure it was this product). The K18 treatment just made thing worse. So now I have hair breakage starting about 2 inches from the root (the virgin part is regrowth since september) and I try to deal with it. I'm planning on doing an olaplex treatment with which I had a great success in the past (it allowed me to grow my hair long). I will also finally be using herbal treatments which sit on my shelves, maybe a cassia. My favorite shampoo is Avalon Organics the B-complex. My hair is middle-back long but I'm planning on cutting dry ends this week end.

Hi lapushka, I re-read your post and am grateful to you for sharing your experience with a certain bun, and I'm really sorry that it caused some breakage, but I'm sure you will bounce back soon into your thick hair again after this cut and your newfound information.

My fine hair is recovering very well and the thickness from my hairloss (i think it was around September) is now just below shoulder length. My very very fine (almost like down hairs) that I lost with that hectic sulphate shampoo wash I did, are growing back with a force! It looks a bit funny now, I have a thickness bump at around shoulder length and then the rest of my hair below that is relatively thinned out! At least we are getting there to hemline fullness once more!!

Hello! I have been trying to grow my thin, loosely curly hair past my shoulder for what feels like forever. I think it’s been stuck at this length for literally over a year (partly due to gradual trimming off of previously balayaged ends but still). I want to do more protective styling to keep the ends tucked away but I’ve found it super challenging with hair that is thin/thinning AND relatively short. Any advice on how to make protective styles work for thin hair at this length?

I wish you the best of luck lapushka in your journey to fuller hair!! You'll get there with time and thank you for sharing your experience with us. I didn't know doing buns (or tight buns) so often could cause damage like that. The warning is much appreciated.

I'm joining this thread because I think I do have fine hair. It's not the finest hair out there but it's not medium thickness like I originally thought. I figured out that my hair was more on the fine side but with medium density when I finally paid attention to the thickness of my ponytail. Which was not even medium thickness. I think the circumference was about the size of a penny or nickel. My hair definitely tricks the eye that I have more of it because of the volume I get. I've always had a struggle getting my braids to look bigger/fuller like some people with medium/thick hair can do. I don't have any issues with hair loss but I know last year around September, I had more shedding than usual so idk if that counts. Shedding scares me sometimes because I already don't have much to work with. I'm really hoping that now that my hair is virgin hair (not bleached or dyed or damaged from straightening), that it will look fuller and healthier when it is long??

also I wish I could offer advice macdonaldmr, but I'm also unsure of protective styles for hair that is shorter than shoulder length. I do use a satin pillowcase, which has helped tremendously with keeping my hair smooth. They are nice because they don't absorb moisture like cotton pillowcases and that's exactly what we don't want, moisture being taken from our hair! They also help with reducing frizz, protecting from damage and tangles. This is basically what a satin/silk bonnet does too. Mayhaps loose braids could work?

Hi macdonaldmr, I second pumpkinsage with the use of satin (I prefer the cap route ). I combine a cap with a daily twist up held with a small clip that keeps my ends from rubbing against anything. While not as fun as some other hair toys, investing in one you really love will make your protective style feel pretty while you wait

As for myself, thin and fine and only just recently accepting of it. After my post-partum shed and subsequential chop, I am at peace with whatever thickness I am given. However, I do want to get off my chest that for me, having grown to TBL before my chop, length did not yield improved thickness. I used the same small ficcare I always did. I had this idea that I would graduate to medium and then a large, lol! Sigh.

So this time around, I would like to get style inspiration from fellow thin and fine hairs to temper my expectations.

A peacock twist is a lovely protective style. It doesn’t keep necessarily keep the ends tucked in (although that is probably possible) but it does keep the ends from rubbing on clothing and out of the way of bag straps etc.

Another advocate for satin here. If it’s windy or if there’s risk of sun damage I wear a satin scarf over my hair to protect it. I sometimes wear one in winter too as I find it makes buns feel more comfortable and it helps to keep central heating from drying it out.

A satin pillowcase and/or sleep cap make a huge difference too. I could see the change overnight.

NightSister I don’t see myself ever outgrowing my hair accessories either. I’m quite glad, I wouldn’t want to have to replace them

Thank you pumpkinsage! That hair slide was part of the inspiration to grow my hair again after having a pixie cut for a few years, I found it when I was clearing out stuff and remembered how much I enjoyed that style
