Ooooo I'll try a pencil! Thanks for the tip. I also realized sticks I've been eyeing are actually 7".
Yay olivetime, waking up to great hair is amazing! Your hair looks voluminous and full of life.
I use a 5” stick, or a 3.5” or 4” fork (functional length). My hair is at the lower end of ii and compacts down, so I don’t want too much sticking out of the bun.
5” is ideal for me, but I use one to put my daughter’s hair up when she’s in the bath, and she’s pretty much outgrown that length. Her hair is thicker and somewhere between hip and tailbone, but she’s only 6 so I don’t know what length that equates to on an adult!
I used a pencil to work out the right size stick for me. There’s a useful chart here as a guide to fork size.

finally a bun that seems like it will work for me at this length!
Lady Stardust, thank you for that hair stick chart! I really needed it because I just asked my husband to make me a hair stick, and when he asked what length I was like "uhhhhh..." LOL
My hair has too many layers to be able to use one right now, but maybe in a few months...

You’re welcome! The chart is for forks rather than sticks, as it’s showing the functional prong length rather than the length of the fork overall, but it still gives a good indication of which how much size increases or decreases according to length and thickness.
I think a bun with layers poking out would be quite cute It’s an easy way to get a messy bun look!
