    Default Help my hair... please

I hate what my hair have become. They're so frizzy and scanty now compared to what they were a couple of years ago.

I feel I have lost a lot of volume in the last year (especially after I had a surgery. I have also had a lot of work related stress this year).

Please give me some suggestions to restore my hair health.

ETA add picture of my hair now.

It sounds like you are going through
Telogen effluvium it's something that happens after illness/surgery, your system gets a sudden shock and causes severe shedding. I'd recommend finding a good doctor and trying to rest as much as possible. I 100% understand how depressing that is but the key is to minimise stress

I'm sorry your GP didn't take your concerns seriously. I agree with Bat -- It may be from stress as you described, in which case I think you might focus on caring for your existing hair (which is beautiful, BTW) while you wait for new hairs to grow back. From what I've read, they will grow back after an intense stress such as surgery. You just have to be patient while your body recovers. But I also wonder if you might have your thyroid and sex hormone levels checked, too, as changes in those are also common causes of hair thinning.

    Thank you .
Good point about thyroid. I will definitely get that done. I have generally notice my T4 levels rise slightly (but not high enough to be clinically relevant) when I am stressed.

I recently went through a big shed too, I lost about 1/3 of my hair. The thinning is quite noticeable right at my bangs and I hate it
I did have some abnormal bloodwork which we are addressing and I'm seeing new grow pop up so I hope its getting better
Try to eat a balanced diet, long stretches with deficiencies can also cause hair loss

I went through a huge shed last year to Covid. Here are a few things that helped:

    - Like others have said, get bloodwork done. Mine was actually pretty good but I was recommended to increase vitamin D and omega-3s.
    - Make sure you're getting enough hydration and nutrition: protein, carbs, and fats. I increased my protein intake to at least 100g a day, and I've seen a big improvement in density and shine.
    - Microtrimming every month to keep my ends fresh and slowly let the thickness travel down, vs doing a big chop.
    - Alternating hydrating and bond-building masks each week
    - Using a leave-in conditioner after every wash, to increase moisture and keep my hair from feeling brittle, and following that with a hair oil to seal it in.
    - Weekly scalp massages with scalp oils that contain ingredients to help block DHT (pumpkin seed oil, etc).

The diet and scalp stuff is to encourage the best quality new hair growth and hopefully prevent future dramatic loss, and the treatment stuff (masks, leave-in, oil) is to preserve the length I already have.

I agree that it's likely telogen effluvium. It's a stress reaction and will likely correct itself once the stressors have been dealt with.

So sorry you're dealing with this. I went through a Covid shed during 2023 and I feel your pain. Take care of your health and be gentle and patient. It will recover. I agree with what the others have already said. It's been a little over 1.5 years since my shed ended and the hair is slowly coming back. New hairs were very noticeable all at once, but it takes time for them to grow out and get thickness in your lengths again. There's a hair loss support thread on here somewhere. Good luck to you
