Thread: Maximum length for face framing strands/layers?

Default Maximum length for face framing strands/layers?

You know this dilemma to cut or not to cut face framing layers or keep them all long. I'd like to hear your opinion, how long face framing layers still look good if other hair is up.

I've seen some cute double bun type hairstyles where they had bangs and the side peices were really long, like past their armpits, and it still looked quite good. But it was very angular and perfect looking, not so much a natural style. But I feel like if your hair is a little curly or wavy it would still look good...it's kind of an opportunity to show off your texture, whatever that may be.

I'm growing out my bangs right now, and they're past my collarbones, and I think they still worked quite well with updos and such as face framing bits. I did trim/shape them up a teeny bit to create a better aesthetic.

I'm growing out my curtain bangs, they are now under my chin and I think they look very very nice with updoes. But before those, I used to leave two face framing pieces out of my bun, and they were at least to my waist.

I’d say go for it! I cut my hair ima Jolyne Kujo style… minus the colored stand and buns. But it’s BCL, all except for some pieces at the top which are kept between chin and nose length. I couldn’t live without those pieces to frame my face!

I have mine at collarbone length. For me that is long enough so they lie the way I want them to without styling. And it's short enough to easily separate them from the rest of my hair when I braid or bun it.

I'd not put my trust in a salon for this. They say a lot of bad things about compact cuts / wolfcuts / butterfly cuts / unicorn cuts, but the technique of putting your hair up, or a well sectioned chunk of it and then cutting in one-go... is very easy and as good as fool proof... if you take some time to look into it & do it right.

When I was classic? With a unicorn cut (pony at the hairline in front / forehead), my shortest layer was waist. So consider that amount of difference. And then after, if you don't particularly like a deep V, you can Feye-trim it a tad more into a U, just so there's some shape to the hair. But you can leave the back straight, and then just section ear to ear and unicorn cut that chunk, and that will give you face-framing. But hold on, don't cut a HUUUUUGE chunk off, just cutting 2 inches will give you a boatload of layering and the shortest one is going to be surprisingly short for only having cut 2 inches off. It's because you direct all the hair to the front, so when you then flip it back it's going to lay so differently that it becomes instantly quite a bit shorter!

I have a long, slender face that's just a touch more long than evenly oval. I always need to have some kind of face framing to add definition, regardless of length.
